70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

Sometimes they do the little boxy type record players in Aldi.
I'm now thinking of doing my own 70's Xmas. 🌲

70sWitch · 18/08/2019 12:03

I shall take a look thank you.

EVERYONE should do a 70s Christmas. Glitterball 🎄🎁🎅

I was a 70s kid and we had a silver tinsel tree! I remember staring at it til my sight went blurred

70sWitch · 18/08/2019 13:29

IslandTulip We did too. I guess that's why I'm so keen to have one.

Is that Abigail's Party? 😂

Yes. I thought you could take inspiration for something to.wear on the big day. After you've got out of your bri nylon floor length nightie and DH peels his pjs off (mind that static cling now)Grin

Haha thanks but I've already got my outfit sorted out. Not finished sewing it yet but I know what it'll be.

I know it's authentic but I may give the Bri Nylon a miss Grin

And my chances of getting DH into ANY pyjamas let alone those is.... yeah it won't happen.

No silver tree in our house in the 70s.
Lots of paper garlands that we made. An angel atop the tree made from a small doll and crepe paper.
A crib
Glass baubles that shattered easily
Tinsel and angel hair.
Coins for the gas.
Midnight Mass
Limited television but always the Queen. No screens apart from television. TV times magazine.

A 70s Christmas would be much cheaper! Stockings with a satsuma, some gold coins and colouring pencils. Snowballs for adults and older teens. Advent calendars with a picture behind the door instead of chocolate or toys.

Slug of brandy in each glass of babycham is my happy drink.

Artic roll as an alternative to Christmas pudding.

Our cheese and pineapple sticks were pushed into another grapefruit but then we were abroad. Marzipan.

All the 'men' going to the pub in the morning and coming back to be served Christmas dinner. Only the women/girls doing all the preparation and the washing---- up

70sWitch · 20/08/2019 22:00

Arctic roll - yes. Why not. It's different. Smile
Sexism - no.

DH does Christmas dinner. Every year. Not changing that. I cook the rest of the year. I'll let him have a can of John Smith's while he's basting though. I'm not unreasonable. Xmas Grin

You still need a Christmas pudding though! So Arctic roll a Christmas pudding, or have the Arctic roll on Boxing Day.

Hi OP. I got this amazing 4ft retro tree for £4 in a charity shop a few years ago. I'd wanted one for ages! Might be worth you contacting some charity shops near you, because even if they don't have any hidden away in the stockroom they may be able to let you know if someone donates one. Good luck!

Thanks pigu. I'll try that. Your tree looks great. Xmas Smile

Arctic roll is horrible as an adult. We had some for an 80s themed bookclub and the ice cream doesn't even melt into liquid, just some kind of solid jelly like mass. The sponge is awful too, really bitty and grainy.

70sWitch · 22/08/2019 11:07

Tbh. I never liked Arctic roll even as a child and it transpires that DH didn't either.

Back to the pud and/or Yule log.

Love the tree where did you get it from if you don’t mind me asking?

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 13:15

Found it on eBay. I feel eBay will be playing a large part in 70s Christmas

Don’t forget Star Wars was out in 77
Grease in 78
Depending on how your relationship works you could get your dh a vintage 70’s playboy magazine
