Dd wants something from USA, $50 postage. Aibu to not get it?

Its a giant squishable cuddly toy. Would cost $90 not accounting for any possible customs/vat charges.

I've told her she might not get it but she reckons Father Christmas might be able to get one no problem. . She's 13yo and adamantly believes in Father Christmas, though I suspect deep down she knows he's not real. When I tried to broach that topic two years ago there were tears so I haven't gone there again.

No, I wouldn't be paying that amount on a soft toy tbh, esp when the postage costs more than the item itself. And you need to take into account what customs etc may be - I was charged £22 last month for a parcel from the US containing about $40 worth of goods, and cost me $24 shipping.

There is a Squishables UK website - they don't have the Puppycat but the pink Kitty is similar and at that price to ship I'd do the best I could. I'm sure come Christmas day any of them would be gratefully recieved.

I'm still traumatised by customs charges for the chinchilla wheel which inc postage and charges ended up costing me £90. At least I could justify that as the chinchilla needed one and nowhere in the uk sells large metal wheels.

Sadly the bloody chinchilla has never used it.

She's 13, some kids are being taken home drunk at 13. I know that's wonky reasoning, but if she wants a huge stuffed toy I'd do it. You can't have many years left of the magic.

I assume the company charges more for postage than the real cost so couldn't you ask a MN from the US to send it for you?

DD has asked for something that is only available in the US so she is getting it but that is her main present as it is more money than I would normally pay for a similar item.

I don't think asking an American MNer to post it would make that much difference to be honest. I'd have to pay the American postage and then the actual postage to UK and it would be very similar.

It is nice that dd is a sweet kid rather than been a nightmare. And she is a really good kid apart from occasional flying off the handle teen stuff, but its very short lived.

She's getting a very special main present, I don't think you need to give her everything she asks for (mother of a 13 year old girl, 14 year old boy & 16 year old girl). She's old enough to understand she can't have everything she'd like.

I was about to say YABU but then I remembered ds1's first school lunch bag came from America (cost over £30) and ds2's 5th birthday present also came from America and cost about £100 (would only been about £30 if I'd been able to buy it in the Disney store over here)

I must admit it looks a total waste of money but then so is over £30 on a school lunch box so I can't comment really!

She's 13, realistically how long will she be interested in cuddly toys? Is it worth spending that much money? Will it be good value for money? You know her so only you can know that.

What about saying that you will pay the cost of the toy, but she has to pay any customs charges out of any pocket money/birthday money/xmas money she has?

Tbh though if she's also getting an expensive main present then I would probably say no to this (I suspect she knows about Santa but it's a rather good way of trying to pull on the heart string so kudos to her on that score!)

She's not interested in cuddly toys. She won't play with it. She loves the programme that its from and wants it as a giant ornament type thing for her room.

A round grumpy looking thing that just sits on the sofa? Highly desirable...just ask DP . I love it actually! It would be incredibly annoying if you had to return though, due to damage or something.
