Christmas

My annual internal struggle with jazzy sprouts.

Mental struggle.
Not gastrointestinal struggle.

Do I or do I not do jazzy sprouts?

I think it's probably a metaphor.

Please do NOT give me a recipe for your fabulous jazzy sprout recipe. It will only make it worse.

I would like someone to say they slaved away doing jazzy sprouts for years and years and years then one year thought 'fuck you fancy fucking sprouts' and went back to just plain old sprouts, and Christmas didn't become sad and grey and hollow for it.

Both brown butter and a little pancetta both qualify as mild-jazzy in my book. Which is still jazzy.

In this month's Sainsbos magazine, or it might be Delicious, there is a recipe for sprouts with almonds and orange, which has you both toasting almonds, which is a high maintenance affair, and boiling some buggering orange peel in a saucepan, as well as cooking the fecking sprouts. That is THREE WHOLE RECEPTICLES just for a dish of sprouts that are tarted up with nuts and a stringy bit of orange.

God give me strength.

I so want to make it.

They are not like mini cabbages at all piratecat. That is a lie told to trick kids into eating them.

Sprouts: Just say No , nothing else to say on this subject

I love sprouts. We had some on Sunday and to my delight both the DCs wolfed them down - although we did go with the mini-cabbage line for the youngest as he loves cabbage.

For Christmas I like them plain with just chestnuts - the frozen ready cooked ones that you just tip into the same pan as the sprouts for a few minutes and then strain the whole lot together and serve.
They are the least jazzy, jazzy sprout - and there is no faffing.

You put the chestnuts into the sprout water Ali? That seems wrong. Don't the chestnuts goe all claggy-toe-splay-mouth-feel?
All the recipes I've blasphemed at on Christmansas past have you lightly sautéing the chestnuts and then adding the sprouts in when they've cooked = 1 saucepan + 1 frying pan

No that is unnecessary IME. Just chuck them in and they are all delicious and crumbly.

My Mum has used that method for years and her Christmas dinner is absolutely the best.

mmm

In the same pan...

That sounds decidedly low faff jazzy.

With butter? s&p

Merchant gourmet vacumn packed chestnuts are so handy to stirfry with sprouts

I do normally shove a lump of butter on top once they are in the serving dish, but it wouldn't matter if I forgot once you've got gravy/stuffing/bread sauce/cranberry on there too.

They are.

Blardy hell look how quickly I'm tempted over the the dark side with accessorising the sprouts.

Go on then nemno. Tell me what you do with yours again, and how easy it is. And how amazing they taste.

Hello Slubber. Not seen you around in ages (norma Stanley Fletcher under a silly nc btw)

I vote for plain.

For those who hate sprouts - it is genetic. If you hate them you are a super-taster. I love 'em. Nothing super about my taste.

Slubberdegullion · 10/12/2013 19:26

Hahaha Sorry nemno. You do it the same as Ali.

Oh how rude of me. I do apologise.

You didn't say you put them in the water though.

What's a super taster then? I thought they just appealed to thems who like bitter flavours.

I hate jazzy sprouts. I like them boiled and plonked on the plate. We'll be having Them jazzed up by MIL with bacon, chestnuts, and all the rest. That's why we're having them every Sunday for the next two weeks, just plain.

Stand firm Slubber.

I'm a 'super taster'. I loathe sprouts with a passion! So bitter, yuk. Devils food. ( and don't get me started on olives...shudder)

I was wondering whether you boil or steam so my instruction encompassed both! Grin

Mollified now though Thanks

[bunch of flowers with a jaunty Fatehr Christmas hat atop] for nemno.

I guess steaming would be OK too.

Still feeling very torn

Maybe...

Oh

Maybe I can do jazzy sprouts on Boxing day using the left over Puritan sprouts from Christmas day.

That would work.

The Minimalist Sprout is the way forward (as well as a fab name for a band).

No crossing of the stalk - it makes no bloody difference and just takes time you haven't got. Cover them with the empty butter paper if you must whilst you "dish up" and maybe a bit of pepper if you can be arsed but mainly - steam em and eat em.

Step away from the Boxing Day Faff temptations!

Boxing Day is for turkey, chips and graveyard with either nuked veg or served cold veg.

You NEED TO REST ON BOXING DAY! It is the law.
