My annual internal struggle with jazzy sprouts.

Mental struggle.
Not gastrointestinal struggle.

Do I or do I not do jazzy sprouts?

I think it's probably a metaphor.

Please do NOT give me a recipe for your fabulous jazzy sprout recipe. It will only make it worse.

I would like someone to say they slaved away doing jazzy sprouts for years and years and years then one year thought 'fuck you fancy fucking sprouts' and went back to just plain old sprouts, and Christmas didn't become sad and grey and hollow for it.

nemno. Please leave. NOT HELPFUL. Freshly cooked chestnuts... that I just pull magically out of my arse?

See! Grr. Jazzy sprout pressure right there.

Slubberdegullion · 10/12/2013 16:16

Oooh. But I do like the plain sprout boxing day versatility angle. That's good.

nemno · 10/12/2013 16:16

No, frozen or tinned ones!

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 16:18

I enjoy all the seasonal cookery programmes which usually include jazzy sprouts. Then on the day I do them plain. I also prefer the tiny frozen ones.

No struggle necessary OP, free yourself with minimalist sprouts.

losersaywhat · 10/12/2013 16:19

What are jazzy sprouts?

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 16:20

You will know when you meet them.

Slubberdegullion · 10/12/2013 16:22

BUT LOOK. If they are tinned them they have to be opened, with a tin opener. And if they are frozen then you have to find scissors. So it IS more effort when you are at that really tricksy moment of the Christmas dinner, the pre-climax stage when if you lose your rhythm then it all goes to pot and the spuds will burn or you'll pour the giblet stock down the sink instead of straining the carrot batons.

What is the net gain of adding the chestnuts to the sprouts?

if you like sprouts, just do them plain. If you don't like them, do jazzy ones to hide the taste if you feel you must have sprouts, however if you don't like them, then just don't bother.

IME the jazzy bits of jazzy sprouts always ends up competiting or being swamped by other things on the plate, so don't bother.

Tell yourself, it's a low key approach that lets the quality of the ingredients shine through.

K8Middleton · 10/12/2013 16:23

Chestnuts are horrible.

nemno · 10/12/2013 16:25

I am crushed!

You could open the packaging hours before..tip toes away.

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 16:27

Make sure scissors are accessible for big day. Or pre-cut bag and secure with a plastic clip thingy. Go mini frozen!

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 16:28

x-post nemno.

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 16:29

I have poured giblet stock down sink, twice!

GinOnTwoWheels · 10/12/2013 16:30

I'm assuming Jazzy Sprouts are sprouts with almonds/bacon/other stuff.

I don't mind jazzy sprouts, but like them plain too. DP however hates 'food that's been jizzed on' ie with excess sauce/decoration/garnish/flavour.

He still complains about the sprouts his sister did some christmases ago because they had almonds and bacon on, but to be fair, there was more almonds and bacon than sprouts and everyone got about two each, which is not enough for sprout lover DP Grin.

We're going to MIL's this year and I'm fully expecting jazzy sprouts, but there won't be bacon as her DP is Jewish, so we will be having a completely pork free Christmas Dinner.

We're also going to have a mini christmas dinner at home some time between Christmas and New Year, as we won't have the abundance of leftovers otherwise and I might do some kind of 'sprouts 3 ways' presentation (ie plain, with bacon and chestnuts, and in some kind of creamy concoction or a bubble and squeak kind of thing).

We both like sprouts a bit too much and have them regularly when in season, such as in stew, where they are all soft and soaked in gravy - yum!

Slubberdegullion · 10/12/2013 16:41

Sprouts 3 Ways.

I've never felt more of a vegetable loser in my life. I'm trying to resist doing sprouts one ways and Gin comes along with her dance of the seven veils of sprouts.

Jeffing sprouts. I have people staying over Christmas and the in laws the weekend prior. I have to pull off two christmas dinners. I'd already ordered the meat for the day itself and then the inlaws announce they're coming. I'm not buying another turkey. I'll have to cook sprouts twice. And now I've read this thread I'm tempted to attempt jazzy sprouts for the in laws. Gah. Pressure.

QueNoelle · 10/12/2013 17:58

Yy multi-functional sprouts. It's the way forward.

Pollywallywinkles · 10/12/2013 18:13

We love sprouts and I would like jazzy ones for a change, but my suggestion was shot down. So it looks like they will just be steamed.

fairisleknitter · 10/12/2013 18:14

I set my bar low. I'll do jazzy sprouts when the kids have left home.

TawdryTatou · 10/12/2013 18:19

Love this thread.

piratecat · 10/12/2013 18:20

i love veg, why don't i like sprouts?

why do i think they are too strong, even when someone says 'oh you must have had some strong ones, but the best ones aren't too strong'

i thought there was only one type o sprout?

Then people say, 'do you like cabbage'
yes i do,
'they are just like mini cabbages'

but their not are they, they taste different. i want to like them, but they taste like iron filings.

piratecat · 10/12/2013 18:21

'of'
'they're'

oops

youaremychocolatecake · 10/12/2013 18:23

I like them simply boiled and then fried off with a little pancetta. Not too jazzy. X

3bunnies · 10/12/2013 18:33

FIL was most put out at jazzy sprouts (I.e. bacon & chestnuts), so will have to cook them for him again this year Xmas Grin

TheFutureSupremeRulersMum · 10/12/2013 18:34

They are lovely as is, they don't need jazzing up.
