Childbirth

How far along where you when you had your first?

I'm 29+3 with my first child and keep getting told I'm more likely to go overdue. I'd rather not, as I'd really prefer not to be induced. I was just wondering what sorts of stages people on here were at when they went into labour with their first?

39 + 2 (waters broke at 39 thought). 38 exactly with the next 2. Most other people I know do go over 40 weeks though, esp with their first...

I was 40+1 and visited the MW for a routine appointment. She asked me if I'd like a stretch and sweep, which I agreed to, but when she 'got there' for want of a better phrase, she told me to go home and rest because I was already 2-3cms dilated and DS was on his merry way.

I went into full labour the next day, and was holding him by tea time Smile for a first time labour, it was all very fast as well. Take on board the stories on here of first time labours, but don't assume that'll be you. It took me 5 hrs 8 mins beginning to end.

36+3. The previous day I had been assured by three separate people that I was 'still carrying high' and had 'ages to go yet'.

Went in to labour 39+5, born 11 hours later at 39+6 which happened to be the date my M/L started after maximising annual leave for the 6 weeks before. I was VERY happy with DS :)

Waters went on all three: at 38 + 1 on DD1, at 26 + 5 on DD2, and at 38 + 5 on DS1. Never had to wait anyway..

40+11. Was due to be induced at 40+12 which I agreed to as Inwas not very mobile due to bloating. You don't have to be induced through. One of my friends went to 40+15. Her midwife was supportive for her refusing to be induced though she was very closely monitored

DS1 - 40+11
DS2 - 40+6
DS3 - 40+2

all natural labours although with DS2 and DS3 waters broke a few days before labour started.

Then with DS4 my waters broke at 35+1. No labour and baby was free and in an unstable lie so I had a C-section at 35+3

DS1 40+15 induced - was absolutely fine Smile
DS2 31+3 emCS due to placenta praevia
DS3 40+10
DS4 bang on due date Grin

Some people cook them longer - I think I may be one of them (when blasted PP does not get in the way...)

Don't fret, OP.
Even if you go 'over', you don't have to agree to induction.
Bet get all the info to be able to make an informed decision.

39 weeks and 37 weeks on the nose. Looooonnng family history of everyone going 2 weeks overdue and having inductions so it was a surprise both times. Waters broke spontaneously. Baby was not engaged either time

Had induction drugs half way through labour with DC1 as dilation was not progressing despite strong contractions. The thing I didn't appreciate is that you can have a low dosage via a drip, and then it can be gradually increased if necessary. It's not simply a case of 0-100mph in one go. Midwife did recommend pain relief nonetheless and I had an epidural.

You can be induced via a gel/pessary I believe but I am not sure of the specifics which makes it more difficult to control the speed of the labour. Worth investigating it all with your midwife before someone asks you when it has all kicked off and you can't remember the ramifications of each drug choice

40+1, infact I went into labour at 5am the morning after my due date. arrived at 40+3 (a long labour!)
If you don't want to be induced you don't have to let them no matter how far over you are - it's your body and your choice!
