Anybody up? Think I'm in labour...

I'm having contractions about every 6 mins, lasting about a minute each. I've sent DH to bed to try to sleep and I'm up watching a Friends dvd! Anyone around to keep me company? Feeling a bit scared and not sure I can do this. (First baby!)

I'm going to be up for another hour - in the US so only 9.30pm here. Happy to keep you distracted for a while. My DS was born 9 months ago so I can remember what you're going through.

I'm in Houston. Only moved here recently from the UK so we're still adjusting. DH is on the computer trying to get our utilities arranged for our new house - there's a lot of huffing and puffing going on. I'm just letting him get on with it whilst I have a rather nice glass of red and watch some mindless tv.

Now that's something to focus on other than newborn cuddles - what forbidden foods and booze will you indulge in once your baby is here?!

A bit of a, ahem, clear out of the guts (I.e. diarrhoea) is very normal in early labour.

Ooh, good luck with the move to the US! I can't even imagine trying to sort out the usual stuff around moving house in a whole new country! Re food - I have a huge steak in the fridge which DH is under instruction to cook me on the first night back from hospital. When I say cook - I mean show it the frying pan for no more than a minute! I'm going to breastfeed (hopefully) so guess booze will still be limited for a while....

I lent my friend Greys Anatomy while she was in labour. She rang me to bring more down as she had finished 2 seasons

Yep - a rumble in the guts is a good sign. Not pleasant but a good sign.

To be honest the move has gone smoother than I thought it would. We were fortunate in that DH's work arranged a furnished serviced apartment for the first month. Meant we could house hunt when we arrived and all our wordly goods have now arrived from the UK so next week we can unpack in our new home.

Mmmmmm - a nice rare steak sounds good! I tucked into a whole baguette with pate and brie a couple of hours after DS was born. Was delish. I breastfed (still am) and had a glass of champagne when we got home - thought it was one time in my life that I defintely deserved a glass of fizz.

Do you know if you're having a boy or girl?

Yep - we got given a really nice bottle of champagne as a wedding present a year ago which we never drank....so that's also in the fridge for a toast once the baby arrives.

I'm having a boy - currently struggling with names, but that's a whole other thread

Sounds lovely.

Do you have a shortlist of names? We had a definite name for a girl and 2 choices for a boy. We ended up asking the midwives which name they thought suited DS.

How are the contractions going? Still bouncing?

Hi OP are you still around? I'm up feeding 6mo dd2 before popping everyone in the car and driving to the coast for a week with the ILs so will be up a little while yet.

How are things feeling? Looks like you've already been given some great advice, have you spoken to a midwife yet?

Sending lots of hurry up snuggly newborn thoughts

Hi Texas, I'm not too bad thanks for asking!

Yellow - we've got a longish shortlist of names. 8 in total although top 3 are James, Thomas and Dylan.

Contractions are still coming right on schedule. Had a couple 3 mins apart but last one was 6 mins again. Still lasting about a minute. Do they get much longer than that?

Nope, not spoken to midwife yet, I figure if I'm coping ok then I can't be that far along yet. Really don't want to either end up in hospital too early or end up being sent home again.

They didn't get longer than that but did come more frequently. Mine were coming every 3 to 4 minutes when we drove to the hospital and I was 5 cm by that point. Sounds to me like everything is going in the right direction for you?

I have a very good friend called James so I think that is a great name. Dylan and Thomas - a poetry fan?

I really hope I'm that far along when I get to hospital. I just dread getting there and them saying "Oh, you're about 2 cm"!!

If contractions get any closer, think about ringing midwife , hospital. Also note intensity and length. It's good you can still type though ! My ds1 name is first on your list. - he is 14 this year

I had exactly the same feeling of dread when I got to the hospital. Didn't actually believe the midwife when she told me I was 5cm. You're doing everything right by staying upright on that ball - gravity will do its thing.

How exciting.

Do you have snacks to take to the hospital? I say this as someone who often stays up stupidly late is a night owl and is well accustomed to the peckishness that sets in around 5am. I imagine you will need the energy by morning - and if you are planning to have an epidural they don't let you eat once you've had it.
