What time did you go in to be induced?

Hospital want me to go in at 5pm on Friday.

I don't want to. I want to go in on Saturday morning.

Is there any reason they want me there overnight? Will ring hospital in the morning to clarify (couldn't face asking more questions of dopey consultant today!), but just wondered.

From your experience, are they likely to start trying to induce me on Friday evening? Or first thing on Saturday?

(Oh, and some "go into labour naturally" vibes most welcome - thank you!)

I think they are meaning for you to be induced on Friday night but not actually in full labour until Saturday morning.

I was induced for ds1 (but was already in hospital) at 10 am and labour didn't become painful until 6pm and he wasn't born until nearly 3 am. Given that it was my first labour and he was posterior and therefore labour was much slower than otherwise, I could imagine you might be induced in the evening and expected to give birth in the morning.

Don't they explain that sort of thing to you? Tut tut.

Good luck BTW.

coppertop · 17/01/2006 21:17

With ds1 I went in to be induced on Friday evening. They started with the pessaries at around 6pm.

With ds2 I went in on a Saturday morning. The ward was pretty busy so by the time they'd done all the usual checks and an extra scan it was late afternoon before they started with the pessaries etc.

I think I preferred going in in the evening and getting started straight away rather than going in the morning and hanging around for most of the day.

Good luck!

8am. Actually induced about 11am (ARM and syntocin), delivered at 8.37pm.

sweetkitty · 17/01/2006 21:19

Watching this thread with interest as you know I am due the same day as Hunker and mine is as stubborn as hers.

My first DD was born at 37+5 weeks after waters went and 4h 20 min labour. Am supposed to be having a homebirth so they will let me wait until 14 days over before induction which I am terrified of. MWs keep telling me that I will go into labour myself as I have been there done it once.

Hopefully Hunker and I will both have our babies before the weekend!!!

Have tried all the natural induction methods too.

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 21:24

FG, the food aspect scares me - I remember being given pork fat (no meat on it at all!) and Smash last time, with a molten pot of ice cream. And they didn't mention that breakfast was in a side room and you needed some kind of token to go and get it so I didn't have any. Loathed being on the ward last time.

Mosschops, I thought it might be a beds issue - but I don't see that waiting till Saturday morning will make much difference, really.

I'd rather labour in the day than overnight - like Kid says, I'm not sure about staffing levels at night. I'm fairly sure it wouldn't take much to get me started, but obviously can't tell that. My Bishop score was 3-5 at 38+3, so surely I can only be more favourable to induce now?

Pupuce, yes, this is my first GD experience - I don't like it! Sex - worked when 10 days overdue with DS, hasn't worked so far, shall we say? Am fully prepared to try again though!

FG, don't want to stay in at all if I can help it! Got no rest at all last time - ward was too hot and midwives on postnatal ward were vile!

Cori, baby is now head down - thank goodness!

QV, sorry, didn't reply to your text DS is sort of better - he's what the GP has described as "a well boy with a temperature" so think he's teething again - thought we were going to get a break before his 2-year-old molars came through, but no!

Serenity, sounds like you had a good experience (apart from an early start!).

Tamba, the pain relief thing scares me - last time I had DS in the water, had one puff of gas and air and retched violently, so don't fancy trying it again. I'm allergic (violently - skin blisters and peels off, looks burnt) to plaster - all, even hypoallergenic stuff - so don't fancy an epidural and the kind of morphine-based painkillers have dropped my blood pressure through the floor and made me violently sick in the past. It would be handy to plan when this baby was arriving, but for me, that seems to be the only plus point! (PS - will add you to my MSN ).

Misdee, that sounds very nice, timing-wise!

So if I only had ARM, could I still have a waterbirth, does anyone know?

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 21:28

LM, the consultant I saw couldn't explain his way out of a paper bag - he was not very good at all. I asked if I could have a waterbirth if I had ARM and he looked at me blankly and said, "I don't understand what you're asking". Now, as I am pretty sure I didn't lapse into Dutch in the middle of talking, I concluded that he was an arse

SK, so hope you get your homebirth! How are you feeling now?

chicagomum · 17/01/2006 21:32

Hunker no words of wisdom, but just of for an early night (ds has a vile snotty cold/cough) as in for a bad night , I hope that it will all happen soon in a quick and easy way. And best wishes for meeting you new lillt one.

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 21:33

Oh, CM - hope you are feeling better soon. Thank you x x x

OP posts:
SorenLorensen · 17/01/2006 21:36

Oh hunker - I hope it happens by itself (it still might!) I was induced with ds1 and it really wasn't so terrible (had the pessary at 2pm, ds1 was born just before midnight). Try sex again!

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 21:42

Am starting to think it's all a joke now and I just have a cushion up my top...

As for sex...DH just said, "Noooo, it's horrid". Ah well. Will seduce him by showing him my very best stretchmark later.

OP posts:
SorenLorensen · 17/01/2006 21:43

"Nooooo, it's horrid"? Do you wish us to kill him for you. OK, no you don't want the babe fatherless. Shall we just maim him a bit?

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 21:46

DH said it's still horrid, whether he's maimed or not. And I guess I can see his point, I'm not at my most alluring 9m+ pg, shall we say?! He'll do the deed, or I'll bloody maim him though

Usually, (at my sh*tehole of a hospital, which i see has been featured on BBC's inside story.....) any intervention, including ARM, they like to monitor you so i would say, probably not. (Although i dont see why not - i had ARM and was stuck to CTG for the whole of my labour with DS).

No worries about the text - i know you have plenty on your plate at the mo

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2006 21:48

Did that make sense to anyone, my last post?

hoxtonchick · 17/01/2006 21:51

with ds i was induced at about 10pm. the good point was that dp, mum & i went out for a nice dinner beforehand (& didn't care about blood sugar levels ). the downside was that i had contractions all night & they'd sent dp home & it was not fun. was 3cm dilated by morning though.... ds was eventually delivered just after midnight. long first labour, failed ventouse, forceps etc etc.

with dd, i went in at 8am. they messed me around as i had a very slight temperature, so they didn't start the induction until 'til 12. she was delivered at 3 in the morning, but it wasn't as bad as it sounds, as the prostin did nothing for me but we had to wait for 6 hours to find that out. once my waters were broken it was fairly speedy & i only pushed for 10 minutes.

sending you lots of low blood sugar, going into labour naturally vibes!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 17/01/2006 21:51

i was induced in the evening - went in at 5pm, given first (and only) lot of gel at 6.30pm, and then was supposed to sleep all night - yeah right, was too niggly! ARM at 10am and still didnt have Jess til 2.45am - wouldnt want it again to be honest.

You WILL go into labour before Friday hun, by Friday you will be sitting with a little bundle at home wondering what all the hassle was about!!!

mummygow · 17/01/2006 21:57

I went in with dd 10 days overdue at 8am got first lot of gel 8.30am they to lde me that I would get more gel later and they would break my waters the following day but by lunchtime I had started niggling when they came back to give me my next lot of gel at about 3pm they told me I didnt need anymore I needed to go to the labour suite, they broke my waters at 6.30pm and dd was born at 5.37am next day. With ds went into labour myself a week early!!

cori · 17/01/2006 22:14

Whats the name of this consutant?. Sorry to be nosey just want to prewarned of the arses...

I see now why you are anti pain relief, especially causing such a reaction.

Do you know if the baby is anterior or posterior?.
Makes a big difference to the length of labour, and the success of induction apparently.

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 22:24

Didn't get his name - not one of the usual ones though, had never seen him before. Have seen Elizabeth before (don't know her surname, but she's lovely).

Not sure whether this baby's anterior or posterior - think anterior as can feel smooth back rather than lots of limbs. DS was posterior though and labour still went pretty quickly.

How are you, Cori? Will have to meet up again when I've had this baby!

OP posts:
cori · 17/01/2006 22:33

My consultant is Miss Cook, she is fantastic. Will be there tomorrow.

Yes, meet up again soon, will look forward to it.
I so hope you can get this baby moving yourself.

Induction works well for some people, but the waiting is so stressful, ( I wont tell you my story )

Passionflower · 17/01/2006 22:59

It's usually either evening, so you're in labour come the morning or the morning so you're in labour by teatime. I think here it depends what shifts your consultant is on. They like to arrange it so your labouring on their shift.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 17/01/2006 23:08

Sounds totally silly but couldnt masking tape or sellotape hold the epidural in?

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 23:39

Am allergic to anything that sticks to my skin. Am a ridiculously sensitive soul... Once pulled a plaster and an inch square of skin off - not nice!

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2006 23:43

OOOOH! i have a plaster allergy but not that bad!

I just cant get the buggers off me once on and am left with very sore rash after.

Had to go to A & E once and they were there for an hour trying to remove one with surgical spirit or something.

Totally sypmathise.

harpsichordcarrier · 17/01/2006 23:45

here we are again ladies...
I oncw pulled a big chunk of skin off my lips while trying to tear some gaffer tape with my teeth
does that count??
it was buggering painful
