come and say it here please, let's get them all out in the open and in one place.
So far today I have seen a comment along the lines of "don't know why you bothered" to someone who was please to have reached 6 months of excl bf, and an incredibly rude and unhelpful comment on a thread started by a woman who was worried that her supply would be affected by her DH giving their 10 day old a bottle of formula. Snotty comments (whether to bfers or ffers) are NOT WELCOME on those sorts of threads, so go on, offload here.

Oh, before we start, some myths I'd like to bust:

  • Improved health outcomes of bf babies are not down to social class - that has been accounted for
  • People bfing past 3 weeks / 6 months / a year are not doing it just for their own sakes
  • It's not only OK to bf in public "if it's done discreetly"
erm..sure more will come up

It's such a shame we eat each other alive on this and so much more isn't it.

We all want to get to the same place [wine time].

It has always been so I fancy. The gentry did it, now we do it. A sign of having no real problems [starvation, plauge etc]

Betcha no one in war torn countries.

DitaVonCheese · 04/05/2009 12:02

I'm not sure how relevant farm animals are to this debate I saw a lamb born a couple of weeks ago and it was walking within minutes, while my 7 month DD is still having trouble sitting up - but I'm guessing the sheep ain't never going to learn to drive or send email. They're not really the same thing, are they?

Bringing up stuff posted on other thread is frowned on here, isn't it?

RedEmma · 04/05/2009 12:04

I can't be bothered to get arsey or judgemental because it's not important, that's the thing.

Infant feeding is only important in that the infant gets enough of an appropriate, nutritionally suitable diet. Breastmilk or formula milk is fine.

All these things that define the way you parent in the first few months and years - breast or bottle? Pram or sling? Purees or BLW? Co-sleep or cot? - none of it is that important.

parsley3 · 04/05/2009 12:07

Well said RedEmma.

SneakyMcSneak · 04/05/2009 12:11

Judgey and arsey eh? Ok then.
It doesn't matter how much any of you try to protest that bfing mothers are not snooty and have an overinflated sense of themselves, because a number of them are. YOU may not be, but some definitely are. They think they're better than people who ff. I think that as long as a baby is fed and is growing and healthy, it doesn't matter whether it's having cow's milk or breastmilk. Not everyone who was ff is doomed to a lifetime of asthma and diabetes.

Oh and after nine months of sharing your body, a woman is entitled to want her body back, and shouldn't be made to feel bad for not wanting to martyr herself for another five years, or however long you think children should be bf.

That should come off as sufficiently offensive.

Mumcentreplus · 04/05/2009 12:12

SPB, I think this is now officially going Tits Up

treedelivery · 04/05/2009 12:19

Riven - But doesn't the milkshake get stuck - it's so gloopy?

Horrid folk will always be horrid, their excuse can be bf or ff or house size or fruit shoots or car type or who your parents are or anything. T'is all the same.

idontbelieveit · 04/05/2009 12:22

There's more to beastfeeding than nutrition though.

As a breastfeeder, one thing I find it really hard to get my head around is people giving babies a bottle while they're still in the pushchair on the bus for example. If my baby is hungry on the bus i have to get her out and feed her, she always gets that physical contact when she has milk. I know it's not recommended for babies to be given bottles in this way and many/most bottle feeding mums would always hold their babies but I see young babies with a propped up bottle an awful lot.

Another thing that I have noticed is that older babies (9 months plus say) drinking formula often hold the bottle themselves and sit by themselves. A breastfed child always gets that physical contact when they have milk. With bottlefeeding the adult can decide not to give that contact and it must be easy to get on with something else if your older baby is occupied drinking milk.

pagwatch · 04/05/2009 12:25

tree

Riven is talking about a McD burger not a milkshake - and a feeding tube not a bottle.

Riven is trying to see if she can give any BFers a heart attack......
Riven is being very naughty

I haven't an arsey one of my own [apart form woe is me rant se above but my Gp said 'you look the type' when I told him how I was feeding.

I didn't mind - hp's are always cheeky to each other. Am assuming he doesn't say that to everyone!

treedelivery · 04/05/2009 12:28

I think their shake could be the way forward.....

pagwatch · 04/05/2009 12:29

idontbelieveit · 04/05/2009 12:33

Also i'll just quote the nurse that came up to me last week while i was waiting with dd(3months) in children's outpatients. Need to get it off my chest.

nurse - "You're not allowed to do that here."

me - "What?"

nurse - "You're not allowed to breastfeed in the waiting room"

me (raised voice) - "You're telling me i can't breastfeed my child in the waiting room?"

nurse - "You're not allowed to feed here."

me - "well i'm not moving as i need to watch my older dd who is playing in the wendy house"

more senior nurse "You can feed here, the other nurse must have been confused by the sign about no hot drinks."

The senior nurse then came and dragged the stupid bitch other nurse away. Didn't get an apology though. they have a massive pro breastfeeding display in there as well.

treedelivery · 04/05/2009 12:35

Utterly off topic - but riven, was reding solfest disability access policy and would love to hear your thoughts. Or anyone with insight?

DitaVonCheese · 04/05/2009 12:52

Bfers have saggy tits. Probably due to the toddlers hanging off them. Better?

LackaDAISYcal · 04/05/2009 13:00

"confused about no hot drinks"...priceless
