Breastfeeding calendar?

VictorianSqualor · 12/04/2008 10:07

After seeing some of the beautiful pictures on the breastfeeding photos thread and watching the nude photoshoot on Young Mums Mansion the other day I've had a look for some breastfeeding calendars and it seems there are but two.

One of which just looks like playgroup type pictures, the other is the IBFAN calendar.
If I were to arrange (hopefully in conjunction with MN and the new Breastfeeding helpline) a calendar would you buy it? pose for it?

Hopefully MrsBadger won't mind me linking to this post, but this is the type of thing I was thinking.
Something arty that shows the real beauty of breastfeeding.

Would also be greatful to hear from anyone who is, or knows a photographer or a great location for the pictures.

It would have to be for 2009 now so I'd think we have plenty of time.

I like beyondthefeedingroom.com
I think we've pretty much agreed that's the way we want to go.

Have put a pic on my profile which might aesthetically be the sort of thing we want, but it would need to be in a 'setting', obviously, a public space.

BouncingTurtle · 13/04/2008 18:58

Yep my vote is for beyondthefeedingroom.com

I'm going to get DH to photograph me feeding ds at Alton Towers next weekend... do you think they'll let me on with him on Nemesis

Why are you sulking at me PAL, what have I done?!

I am in central Scotland...canny take pictures but would pose and/or try to co-ordinate somewhere to do a shoot. Glasgow botanics are lovely, or the park. Ooh the Glasgow museums are all "breastfeeding aware" too whatever that means...maybe they would let us feed in front of the dinosaur bones etc?!

I have a PR person friend will ask her for any advice.

VictorianSqualor · 13/04/2008 19:22

Or feed in front of a picture of a woman feeding in an art gallery?
They were very popular paintings.

PAL, I'm not ignoring you!! MrBumper is near the london/oxford type area so will have to discuss things with him, especially as bumper didnt even tell him, just volunteered him
But I would vbery much liek you to pose if we don't need a photographer

That would be great caz, Is Hunker in Scotland?
Might be worth you two doing the stuff up there.

I'm in London and would love to pose but baby not due til end of July so i might be a bit late for you.
Its a great idea!

PortAndLemon · 13/04/2008 19:30

Some interesting links...

This used to be a good calendar but they aren't doing it for 2008.

This interesting in view of VS's recent post...

Annoyingly, Project Got Breastmilk, which used to have looooooooooooooovely photographs, seems to have closed down. And I can't find the other site I was after... lost the link in a previous hard disk crash and Googling on remembered phrases hasn't helped so far...

MegBusset · 13/04/2008 20:06

VS yes, I will happily take on the proofing.

suzi2 · 13/04/2008 20:07

I'd pose but really I think the photographer would have a tough time. I have huge unruly, rather ugly boobs and a teeny 14 month old DD who is even more unruly! Breastfeeding these days is an exercise in something. Not sure what, patience maybe!

But I know a couple of stunning bf mums and a couple of photographers! I do peer support locally and would be happy to promote the calendar etc. Oh, I'd buy one too.

suzi2 · 13/04/2008 20:10

I think you need realistic shots. Ones sitting on a sofa, TV remote in one hand, box of pringles at the side and a glass of wine

Caz10 · 13/04/2008 20:15

ooooh speaking to hunker in RL would be like meeting royalty

I am back to work FT in June but then have the 6wks school summer hols off, so would be ideal if you wanted to shoot in JUne/July. Hopefully someone north of the border will know a photographer.

VictorianSqualor · 13/04/2008 20:21

Hunker isn't in scotland, I think I'm getting her confused with Aitch.

She's down this end of the country, so it'd be you sorting it if you wanted to take it on.

Something she did mention though was ethnicity, I think we've covered all sorts of ages with the models but what about class and ethnicity?

We need it to be as varied as possible.

OP posts:
suzi2 · 13/04/2008 20:26

Can you tell the class of someone from a photo done in a photoshoot? Maybe there should be someone done up in chav gear and someone else in a ballgown lol.

lisad123 · 13/04/2008 20:30

cant i do completely naked??!!

I would like to do a dream feeding photo, its lovely.

VictorianSqualor · 13/04/2008 20:35

lol suzi, It won't be truly obvious but if the calendar was full of middle-class white mothers between 30-35 you'd know.
Just as if it was full of teen mothers on benefits you'd know, if everyone is different there will be no running theme so nothing to judge them on.

OP posts:
MotherofUBERboys · 13/04/2008 20:37

oh i found pics of me attempting the first bf in the birthpool at my last HB... not sure they demonstrate particularly good technique/latch tho

Stefka · 13/04/2008 20:53

Watching this thread with interest! I think it's such a lovely idea. Do let me know if you decide to do a Scottish shoot.

MotherofUBERboys · 13/04/2008 21:16

there you go, is on my profile for now
not that we can go back in time and shoot me bfing ds3 just after he was born 2 years ago mind.

charleymouse · 13/04/2008 21:44

VS I will travel with lights (if MrBumper needs them) and breasts and dc if required as would love to participate. Not sure what else can do to help but the offer is there.

FTR I am 38 white and a bit on the lardy side

Lovely to see all these pics of BF babes. So I have added a profile pic of DS BF at 14 days old so gestational age 33+4 to debunk the premmie myth.

Will email you cheers.

Bumperlicious · 13/04/2008 21:50

Hi all

Mr Bumper has agreed to do photography (I linked him the thread) for this area (would be nice to have lots of different people involved i.e. photographers for diff areas, though we could do London too as my mum lives in Surrey).

We need to think of how we would do these shots and what the themes will be, so far it seems like we have these (plus my ideas):

Myths

  1. You can't bf passed a year - pic of mum(s) bfing older children
  1. You can't tandem feed - pic of tandem feeders
  1. You can't bf twins - pic of mum(s) feeding twins
  1. You can't drink when you bf - pic of mum bfing and enjoying a drink laughing with friends, unposed IYSWIM
  1. You can't feed in Church - pic of mum feeding in a church
  1. You can't bf a premie - pic of mum bfing, but some other prop to represent premie status and/or old pic from someone when they were feeding a baby while in SCBU
  1. Bfed babies don't sleep through the night - not sure how we would represent that one as the key is to have a pic of a mum bfing
  2. You don't get a break while bfing - a mum bfing and pumping?
  1. Dad's don't get to be involved in bfing - a bfing pic including a dad
  1. Only XXX mum's bf - montage of mothers of all ages, backgrounds feeding, maybe in different uniforms to represent different careers, different ages

  2. You can't bf discreetly - a montage of bfers feeding where you really can't tell, e.g. using slings, pashminas etc.

  3. You can't leave the house when bfing - a montage of pics of mothers bfing in all kinds of locations

I imagine each page to have a brief accompanying piece of text putting the myths in context with extracts from research, and also testimonials from mothers and bfcs.

And on the last page a huge montage of all the pictures that people have donated but didn't get in the myths to ensure everyone is included.

This is just my take on it, I'm feeling creative and would love to direct the shots (at least the ones that DH is doing). What do you thing of these ideas, any others?
