"amazing people get really pissed off about P+T spaces and its not actual LAW or about grapes being eaten before being weighed and paid for at supermarkets. "

hmmm - funny I don't think I've every got annoyed at either of those things, or 4x4's for that matter either.

I just think that there are so many other laws that are broken everyday that have a DIRECT impact on the people around us, but which we ignore.....how many of us have nearly had little children (or even ourselves) sent flying by someone riding their bike on the pavement??? I certianly have - plenty of times - and that's also illegal (I hasten to add I don't report them - but do say some rude words ).

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 19:30

"It would be patronising in the extreme to have one law for rich countries and another for poor countries."

ermm why?? Tobacco advertising is banned in some countries in the world, but is everywhere you go in others. And we all know the effects that smoking can have on the health.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:34

why dont you report the cyclist?
do you not care enough?

NEW DRAFT

Dear

I am writing to draw your attention to an issue involving the illegal promotion of infant formula in your Silverlink Retail Park store in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear.

When I visited the store on Monday 7th November 2005, I was disturbed to see a display of reduced price stage one Aptamil formula on the checkout. This completely contravenes several items described in the The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula Regulations 1995 (www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1995/Uksi_19950077_en_1.htm).

To summarise the relevant information:
Restrictions on promotion of infant formulae
19. No person shall at any place where any infant formula is sold by retail?
(a) advertise any infant formula;
(b) make any special display of an infant formula designed to promote sales;
(c) give away?
(i) any infant formula as a free sample; or
(ii) any coupon which may be used to purchase an infant formula at a discount;
(d) promote the sale of an infant formula by means of premiums, special sales, loss- leaders or tie-in sales; or
(e) undertake any other promotional activity to induce the sale of an infant formula.

You will be aware the WHO rules are there to protect mothers and babies the world over. Whilst it may not make that much difference to a baby in the UK, it can be the difference between life and death in less developed countries. I am extremely disturbed to see a large company such as Mothercare flouting these regulations.

I have already emailed some of these points to [email protected] but, as yet, have not received a response.

Yours faithfully

Had to giggle at "'unless you just want even more rubbish in the landfill sites........' " Er... where do you think the empty cartons will end up? Do they magically vanish into the ether if the milk is used? At least the contents are biodegradable.

WRT the cyclist example - oit's difficult to report an incident like that bcause it's gone without a trace once it has occurred. I would report tracable/provable illegal things like a shot.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:40

agree with soupy about reporting things

Popsy, I think your letter is fab

moondog · 08/11/2005 19:40

Nice one popsy!

(Lol at your semi professional comments.Just being tongue in cheek.I'm one of those people who writes a lot of letters when I'mnot happy with the way things are done.)

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:42

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 20:01

popsy - because life's too short IMO.

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 20:03

oh and if "I" had been buying the cartons - they would have ended up on the bonfire - good for kindling to get it going - what I can't compost in the garden tends to get burned (or the fire in winter).

And in case you hadn't realised - a squashed empty carton (of anything) takes up less space than a full one

Right I'm off to sulk now, as I was "ultra" organised, thinking I had a meeting to go to tonights.......but it's actually tomorrow night

SenoraPostrophe · 08/11/2005 20:12

LOL at "so what if it makes someone choose one brand of formula over another..."

that would be the argument in favour of advertising cigarettes all over the place. I bet you're not in favour of bringing that back are you OO?

welshboris · 08/11/2005 20:29

Go for it Popsy
As for the breastfeeding rooms, who mentioned them? Who criticised bottle feeders?

No-one
And Popsy didnt post this to start an argument, or to get on a high horse

Good for you Popsy

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 20:48

but SP - bottlefeeding (for most of us) won't kill.

And TBH - I reckon the reason they banned it isn't because of dirty water issues - rather the availabilty issues - you could have to travel 100km (or even more) to get formula (or nappies, or any other 'baby' stuff) if you live in many parts of rural africa!

not to mention the very "privelegded" poor people who have health people visiting them after birth to actually give them these free samples!

BTW - I was NOT the one who said anyting about her being against bottlefeeding, I just said that TBH I don't see the point of the law............

and now I really will shut up

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 20:49

OMG straight from 4x4's to breast/bottle - has this turned into another scrap?

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 20:52

QoQ, bottlefeeding kills 1.5 million babies a year. No, it won't hurt "most" of our babies, but it will hurt a large number, pretty permanently.

That's another reason this is important - if baby product companies, be they formula manufacturers or Mothercare, think they can get away with flouting the code here, what the feck are they getting away with in countries where there isn't the protection. That's my problem with it - but of course, it's not a big thing to care about, is it?

moondog · 08/11/2005 21:01

Good point hunker re what 'they' get away with here and in developing countries.

If you could write to Mothercare about dog excrement-leaving owners and yellow line-parkers, I probably would. You can't.

But you can get them to stop flouting the law re formula.

moondog · 08/11/2005 21:06

What you say is interesting and reasonably coherent normsknockers but sadly so wide of the mark.

Try to keep up.

PeachyClair · 08/11/2005 21:13

hang on, I bottle fed ds1 in order to save his life, and ds2 for my own peace of mind (bf ds3) and I am all for choice... but I do think laws have to be abided by, and when we don't report someone for law breaking then we are doing wrong. if you want something changed, you have to change it.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 21:13

i only mentioned breastfeeding rooms in the first part of my first draft
as an introduction

i will get me boobs out anywhere
don't need muzak to do it
