I told you to keep up dear.
If you can't,why not run along and play nicely?

starshaker · 08/11/2005 21:37

if formula cant be sold at a reduced rate why is someplaces cheaper than others shouldnt they have a set price and stick to it or is it ok to overprice it

skinnycow · 08/11/2005 21:38

as a bottle feeding mummy (albeit years ago) I would have snapped up those reduced cartons IF they were the milk my children used as its a pretty expensive game not being able to do what supposedly comes naturally.

Just out of curiosity what would you do if you saw drugs being dealt - would you approach the parties or just call 999?

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 21:40

How do drugs come into it?

skinnycow · 08/11/2005 21:42

being sold illegally too?

BTW not looking for a fight - im having enough of that on 4x4

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 21:43

If I saw someone breaking the law, I'd ring the police. Heck, I've phoned them (NOT 999!) about a skip with no lights on in a road near me.

ooops delayed posting

skinnycow · 08/11/2005 21:45

really? what did they do? because an old goat across the road from us has got a skip on the road with no lights. He's actually clearing out his mums house but cars do drive quite quick along here and Im worried there'll be a horrid accident

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 21:45

"what the feck are they getting away with in countries where there isn't the protection."

well not much that the poorest people (who don't have access to clean water) will see - you can't just pop to the local supermarket when you live 100's of kms away from one - and I know from experience that the village 'shops' sell sadza and beer - oh and coca cola - now that IS available everywhere and cheaply

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 21:49

SC, they took it seriously - skips without lights are dangerous. One of DH's friends was very nearly killed by crashing into one (only saved because the police were following him at the time, coincidentally, and were able to call for help).

Skip companies can be fined for it.

skinnycow · 08/11/2005 21:50

hmmmmm i feel a phone call coming on!

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 21:50

QoQ, nice bodyswerve over the 1.5 million babies dying - I know that access to formula isn't via a supermarket in a lot of places, so please don't patronise me. No, I haven't lived in Zim, but heck, I flatter myself I do know a little bit about the wider world. FGS!

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 21:53

so where DO they get this formula that's killing all the babies then?

skinnycow · 08/11/2005 21:53

is anyone else imagining a "baby milk mountain" because they cant get rid of it ?

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 22:00

You want a list of where everyone in the world obtains formula, QoQ?! LOL!

Think you're missing the main point of my post - that formula manufacturers in Third World countries are underhand and have dubious (that's kind) marketing strategies. And as a result, 1.5 million babies die each year. Does that not appall you?

daisy1999 · 08/11/2005 22:03

fgs formula isn't evil!!
yes it is preferable to breast feed but some women can't and if there was no such thing as formula the babies of women who couldn't breast feed would die!
hurrah for formula!
now how about discussing something important?

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 22:04

Oh, FGS, it's not about formula being evil! Not AT ALL!

moondog · 08/11/2005 22:05

Off you run then daisy.
I await a gem of a thread from you on say...the pros and cons of strengthening trade relations between Britian and China.

Gobbledigook · 08/11/2005 22:06

I agree with Normsnockers - it's just some people's favourite hobby horse and will complain anywhere and everywhere about it.

There are plenty of other, far more dangerous things, such a parking on double yellows, seeing someone speaking on mobiles while driving, that people don't bother putting pen to paper about.

I'm not an idiot - I fully understand the arguements being made by those in favour of the letter but just looking at the people posting in favour tells you it's not just about a law, any old law - it's this particular topic people get right on their high horse about.

Otherwise there'd be letters drafted on MN every day about all sorts of laws we see being broken, but there aren't.

I suppose if you truly believe it makes a difference then it's good that you are bothered enough to do something about it.

hunkermunker · 08/11/2005 22:07

Go on then, who should I write to about mobile phones being used when driving?

Gobbledigook · 08/11/2005 22:08

Police?

And with that, parpety parp parp! Not falling out with my favourite MNetters over this old chestnut!

HRHQoQ · 08/11/2005 22:10

Surely if we concentrated on WHY these babies die (not because of formula but because of the dirty water.....if they can even get hold of the stuff - notoriously difficult to get hold of in some places) and put the resources into providing wells (for clean water), education (so the mothers can read the instructions properly), and help to provide these people with sustainable incomes (small scale farming being the most common) rather than campaigning against advertising for breastfeeding -

apart from tobacco (and alcohol in some countries) which we know ARE dangerous (no matter how you consume them and no matter what precautions you take) are there any other consumables where the advertising of them is banned (of course I know we'd all love McDonalds and the like to be banned - but that's a whole new thread ).

vickiyumyum · 08/11/2005 22:13

this is going to be one of those threads that just keeps on running and running.

as said everyone has their own opinions and popsycal feels within her rights to complain to motherare (which of course she is) but there are hundreds if not thousands of bottlefeeding mothers out there who would like to be able to buy some formula cheaply.

perhaps we should ban the issue of cheap or free formula to those on low incomes/child tax credits as i feel that advertising that you can get this discount is a form of advertising formula, if not any particular brand just formula in general.

what about health visitors they often say things like 'oh hes a hungry one give him a top up' or if you ask them which formula they would recommend they will freely tell you. oh and the advertising on the hv's diary, lanyard, pen etc etc which is all given free to midwives and health visitors by the producers. sma (and i'm sure many others) even give midwives free due date calcualtors with sma plastered all over them, isn't this then flouting the law?

moondog · 08/11/2005 22:15

What is a lanyard???
