Is this breaching the whatsit before I write in and get on my high horse?

TIA

Not arguing with that. I just think if that is the law, then the law is an ass.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 16:49

nice

i agree that it is a good letter tyo send and if yoy feel that strongly about milk being sold of cheap when it is about to go out of date then you are within your rights to make a complaint.

however i have to say that i felt the part about being a mother and having fully breastfed your children was not necessary and makes it sound as if you are completley against anyone who would dar to not breastfeed their child. as i have said this is just my opinion, but felt it should be said.

i have breastfed both of my children one for 1 year and the other for 9 months through my choice, however i do feel that i would hate to feel victimised for the way that i choose to feed my baby. i also feel that just because formula was reduced in a store that i would not buy that brand over another or give up breastfeeding in order to buy cheap milk. in fact i think it would probably put me off buying it, knowing that it was so close to its use by date when the rest of the stock on the shelf had at least a few months before it expired.

dear popstcal
as a newcomer to the site, i can see you have a few mates here but would just like to stick my nose in and say that you are in the right. Whether or not this applies to your personal circumstances or not should not refrain you from doing what is right. Also, can I say that the banter from you all has really cheered me up. Thanks

northerner · 08/11/2005 17:16

Yes Popsy you are right. Send the letter. But LMAO at Olive riot police. 'Give up the formula' LOL

moondog · 08/11/2005 17:25

Good on yer popsy.
Do agree with vicky re first part though (typical emotive women's language tbh.)
All that is needed is to point out coldly and tersely that it is illegal.Don't congratulate them on their facilities either. They are rip off merchants and aren't doing anyone any favours.

You go gal!!!

sigh

its the law though

suedonim · 08/11/2005 17:32

The WHO rules are there to protect mothers and babies the world over. Whilst it may not make that much difference to a baby in the UK to be b-fed or f-fed, it can be the difference between life and death in less developed countries. It would be patronising in the extreme to have one law for rich countries and another for poor countries.

northerner · 08/11/2005 17:35

Sigh. I'm all for a good old barney about breast v bottle, but Popsy was not anywhere slating bottlefeeding. She merely pointed out that they are breaking the law and she is going to write and tell them. Don't give her a hard time.

amazing people get really pissed off about P+T spaces and its not actual LAW or about grapes being eaten before being weighed and paid for at supermarkets.
Yet a law that serves to protect the lives of mothers who have no choice about feeding their babies because of what these huge milk conglomerates do, if we don't put our foot down in the developed world then who will?
Its not about whether you would be swayed by the cheap milk, not whether you can or cannot breastfeed.
Put it in perspective...

LadyTophamHatt · 08/11/2005 18:03

Good for you popsy, well done for caring to do this.

I only know it illegal because of MN but I'm ashamed to say I probably wouldn't go to the lenghth you have to put it right. Maybe I should.

Well done.

PeachyClair · 08/11/2005 18:41

Well done Popsy, the law's the law and it's that simple.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:08

Thanks everyone.

Have just put ds2 to bed and was thinking about this while settling him.

For me, there are several issues and it is not about a breast versus bottle debate. I bottle fed ds1 and breast fed ds2. Mainly due to the support I received on MN and other sites, I have been able to eclusively breast feed until 6 months. Now that ds2 is 8 months, he is still fully breast fed and obviously still on solids. And I work full time. So for me, this is an issue I feel strongly about.

I think a happy mum means a happy baby and people have choice about what to do (though I do't feel I was given the right information or support to make that choice with ds1). People in the developed world sometimes don't have that choice due to the tactics of formula manufacturers and it is these areas where people most need to breast feed for a variety of reasons.

So often, we all say that we will write letters of complaint or make a stand about something and then don't. I am glad that I have.

As to the wording of the letter and marketing ploys of breast feeding rooms etc etc. Not really the issue is it?

I asked for some advice when I started this thread. Yes it is a disucssion forum but not a 'let's all slate another parent' forum.

moondog · 08/11/2005 19:15

Well pc,as a semi professional letter writer I can tell you categorically that personal info of this sort weakens the tone.

But hey,it's your letter and your stand so do what you want. You're a star anyway.

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:21

moondog - I will alter it for when I send out the 'hard' copy.
What you see in this thread went as an email....
off to redraft before posting it....
Thanks

popsycal · 08/11/2005 19:22

Am intrigued as to what a semi professional letter writer does.....

do they write semi-professional letters?
;)
