Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

And according to another post I read recently, Meghan married Harry before her looks "fell off a cliff" and she isn't ageing well.

Here she is last month. Doesn't she look dreadful? 🙄

My favourite is what Harry should do in Africa. The descendant of colonisers is best placed in Africa where he can show that he is willing to live with the poor and not care about the wealth his family profited from. Africa, is a place some royals travel to for poverty porn and usually not seen a place not to be seen dead in unless on safari or if you are Harry. Help those poor children! We would love him more if he weren't making money with his "Afro whatever" in Montecito. How dare they not be poor and struggling? 😂

They both look better and happier than they did here, but how could they not when they don’t have to deal with the ridiculousness that they had to here and would still be doing so if they were.

Her style and Kate’s are not that far from each other yet it’s only her who gets flack from them regardless when she usually looks amazing.

I can’t imagine being that obsessed to tear someone down that you don’t know, never met, and has no effect on your life whatsoever because you had a picture in your head of what a stranger’s spouse should look like. It’s bonkers. It’s not like she is talked about every week or even month. Most recent stories I’ve seen are on fashion websites and even on social media other than what happened last month, the stories are recycled from last year or even further. Could only imagine what kind of sh*t they would have said if she had come to the coronation.

They’re just hoping their marriage falls apart (another ridiculous and disgusting thing to hope for) so they can shout “see, knew they wouldn’t last”, when I bet they be upset if someone said the same about them.

I don't want to sound like a cracked record, but honestly I would just like to come on here for at least one day, and not see some iffy thread, or iffy posts. It is tiresome, and depressing.

I live in hope that MN HQ have more POC moderators - when I have reported some really nasty but subtle posts recently I was responded to by an “Imani”. And the posts were taken down when they wouldn’t have been before - so hopefully they are getting there.

LadyKenya · 17/06/2023 13:21

Yes@skullbabe hopefully they will get there. It just seems to me that it is like a never ending game of racism roulette on here. As a black woman I am fed up with it. The obvious racism that is displayed on MN, and the other sly digs, posts. MN needs to have some poc as mods. People who understand what racism is, and the many forms in which it is manifested. Why should I feel that I do not want to be here just because I have black skin? It is absolutely disgusting that poc should be feeling like that.

Interesting thread on surrogacy which is rather like a broken record with many of those against saying surrogacy is slavery. In my opinion, the assertion that surrogacy is slavery is an offensive form of slavery denial- especially regarding surrogacy here in the U.K.

I can understand ethical objections to surrogacy, but wish some who do object would not use false equivalence to slavery. It waters down what slavery was and is used in a cavalier fashion to score points in debates about surrogacy. It’s disrespectful of history and the millions of my fellow Black Africans who died due to slavery.

It shouldn’t be socially acceptable to appropriate slavery like this. The fact it is socially acceptable, is to me, racism. And MN isn’t going to delete any of the posts likening surrogacy to slavery either! It’s just an accepted form of racism.

If you’ve consented to donate your labour, time, whatever for 9 months and have the right to change your mind and back out at anytime then no you’re not being enslaved. Nor is a baby being adopted as a family member a slave baby in any sense.

These are presumably educated women too, so how can they not understand the basics of what slavery is and is not? I feel they do know better but don’t care. They feel entitled to appropriate our history for their use, just like their ancestors felt entitled to appropriate our bodies for their use.

It is, while they’ll also add how other white groups were slaves too still not taking into the fact of the still obvious power dynamics and racism that is still very much prevalent.

I agree@HadalyEve . It actually makes me cringe when I have read posts like that. These people having the audacity to compare the two are reprehensible with their views as far as I am concerned. Maybe they lack the knowledge of breeding farms. I have no appetite to try to educate these people as to why what they are spouting is beyond offensive! Learning about slave breeding farms was not a pleasant experience.

PinotGroggio · 18/06/2023 14:17

I'm opposed to surrogacy but it's not comparable to slavery. In many cases it's economic coercion but that's still not slavery FGS.

That is quite true, I would not have thought overwise. Women who are well off financially do not seem to feel the need to do this, on the whole. That is fine, talk about these issues. Just do not compare it to slavery.

I bet the people whose lives were torn apart and/or who are waiting for compensation can't wait for the new Windrush 50p.

And the Windrush postage stamps.

Im glad not only one who thought it’s a bit off to “celebrate” the Windrush generation when many are still fighting the Home Office for the compensation the Government promised them.

Windrush: 75 Years Stamp Set

Eight new stamps celebrating the contribution of the Windrush generation to the culture and life of the UK. Two First Class, two £1.00, two £2.00 and two £2.20 landscape stamps.

Roussette · 20/06/2023 08:15

This was my first thought. How tone deaf. The Home Office carelessly lost papers for some of the Windrush people and they still live under the threat of deportation, not helped by Braverman going back on some of commitments made to right the wrongs.

It's shit but the Royal Mint, Bank of England, BBC, Post Office etc are independent bodies/agencies. They all have to perpetuate their myths of when black people started arriving here and alter stories.

Do you know what the ship was originally used for? https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/windrush-histories/story-of-windrush-ship

Can't wait (not) until they do the NHS 75th anniversary in July - hopefully they will mention the racism that was and is still prevalent in it today.

LadyKenya · 20/06/2023 12:42

BBC Four was showing programmes about the Windrush yesterday night. I am going to watch them on playback. I was watching the England team play, it was worth it to see Bukayo Saka score his first hat trick. Go Saka!⚽

LBFseBrom · 20/06/2023 13:10

I am going to watch the Windrush programmes later. I remember being profoundly affected by the 'Windrush' book in the late 1990s. I was a child in the 1950s and remember much of the attitudes displayed at that time - and later.

LadyKenya · 20/06/2023 13:49

Sorry to hear that@LBFseBrom . It must be very difficult for you when certain things have happened so recently. I have just ordered a book called ' Voices of the Windrush', and I have a book called 'With hope in their eyes'. It is over 20 years old, and I have kept it all these years. That was when I was just beginning to learn about racism, and feel it. Before then I was not really too aware of it in my day to day life. Looking back I now understand that it was happening since I was young, I just did not know it, for instance on the estate where I lived I had two friends who were white. They would knock for me to play out. One of the girls would come into my house to play sometimes, and I would go to her house occasionally. But my other friend would never come in, and I was never allowed in her house, even though my other friend would be. I did not really think anything about it at the time. It was years later when I was speaking to my brother about the estate and the people there when we were growing up, that he told me that my friend's dad was racist. He would not go into detail, other than to say that the man had said something to him, which was not nice.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 21/06/2023 20:24

@HadalyEve @Roussette @Reugny Tone death with a capital T. A good friend had a parent that had brief brush with the Windrush scandal. Given what I know of that and the stress it caused that family, I have the deepest respect and empathy for those whose lives were torn apart/ damaged by it.

What sad is that this country has learned nothing. Given Braverman's disgusting 'lets move on' attitude, this is not a celebration of the contribution of people from the Caribbean, it's just another shameless way to profit from the suffering of black people. If those independent bodies want to celebrate the contribution of black people from the Caribbean they would do better to contribute directly to them, and the black community.

I will grudgingly say that at least artist are descendants of people from the Caribbean: Kareen Cox, Bokiba, Tomekah George, Alvin Kofi and Emma Prempeh.

Thank you, I have added these books to my list.

That gastly Suella was on the news yesterday being asked questions about the Windrush scandal. She was asked if she would like to apologise to the victims. She resolutely would not, and proceeded to waffle on about something, or other. By that point I could not listen to her anymore, and switched channels. This is the same day that I learnt from the news that https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65926622

Composite photo of Empire Windrush and photo of Sylvia Calvert

Windrush: Hundreds with chronic and mental illness sent back to Caribbean

Hundreds of the Windrush generation were victims of a "historic injustice" - some torn from their families.

People are still waiting for compensation from the wretched Home Office. How dare these people talk on one hand about black people contributing blah, blah, blah, and then on the other hand look how they continue to treat us.
