hi! im due sept 6th, how do i join this group?! thanks!

Love2Dance · 01/07/2010 16:00

Hi and welcome Skyeplusbump. You don't have to do anything to join but if you want to put yourself on the list in the title just copy, add your details then paste into your next message.

No hospital bag packed yet. I should learn the lesson from DH's colleague's wife who had to have a CS at 30 weeks due to pre-eclampsia (happily baby boy and mum both ok and now out of hospital).

Blimey, isn't everyone busy on this thread - both in real life and on MN! Plenty to catch up on.

I haven't packed my hospital bag but have got some items for it and have got it on my to do list.

Sassy - sorry about your GTT result - hopefully the comments from others and the links to other threads will help you control it.

Skater - love the painted bump! I'd have loved to have had mine done but haven't been to Glastonbury since 1991 and have no plans to go to any festivals this summer - too busy with other stuff while trying to make sure I have some quiet time to myself too!

Went to a local Home Birth meeting to meet other people who are planning to have a HB - we are definitely considering it, especially having been able to talk to others who've done it or are nearly there.

Have done nothing re hospital bag but think feel quite sorted about what to pack for the baby with sleepsuits & muslins & nappies and stuff.
But is there any advice from veteran mums as to what to pack for me? Apart from pajamas and obviously now big pants I'm feeling a bit at a loss as to what I might need...

cinnamongreyhound · 01/07/2010 17:51

Slippers! Camera- we got lots of lovely pics of DS being weighed and first few moments of his life.

We took snacky food and lucozade, straws- very handy so someone can hold a drink for you and you can sip.

Maternity pads, something to wear home, I took a magazine but was only in 1 day after birth and just slept mostly when baby did and spent lots of time just looking at him Toiletries and towel, I didn't take breast pads but I suppose if you have CS you might be in long enough to need them in hospital.

Also a bit of money so I could use the TV thingy by the bed for emailling everyone before I was released.

I'm sure there are other things I've forgotten though

LadyRabbit · 01/07/2010 17:56

No to the hospital bag for me too....

But I did buy the pram today, and for anyone who hasn't yet, Mothercare have a good sale on and I also have an online discount code that gets you 10% off on top as well if you want it. Managed to get a brand new Bugaboo at a knocked down price so am v. happy. There are loads of good sales on at the moment : Mamas and Papas, John Lewis - have so far not step foot in a shop (apart from a very overwhelming experience in the John Lewis nursery department, I needed a lie down after!!) and done it all online which is bliss for a shopaphobic like me.

No hospital bag here either, although I am hoping for a homebirth. Still, I learned my lesson the hard way with DD1 who was meant to be at home and I had to transfer right at the pushing stage because of meconium in my waters. Nice!

I would like to have had:
vast quantities of food and drink (I mean sandwiches and 'proper' food! I was starving after labour!)
bottles of water (preferably frozen as they only seem to bring jugs of lukewarm water)
camera
something to read
money/credit card
A clock or watch - it's amazing how long the first night can feel when you don't know the time!
nightdress that covers breastfeeding bra (maybe some breast pads, but I don't think I needed them until a few days later).
disposable knickers (I loved em - just tear em off and chuck em away. I wouldn't want to have pulled ANY knickers any further down my legs!)
maternity pads - hundreds!
nice toiletries and a towel
going home clothes (including footwear!)
flip flops for showers and walking around
light dressing gown maybe
all the baby things, obviously!

I don't think I'd personally take much for the actual birth - I just used a tens machine both times before, and the only other thing that was great were lucozade/glucose tablets and cartons of fruit juice. I didn't really want loads of music, massagey things, and aromatherapy at all. Oh, and I loved my gym ball.

Have any of you used Earth Mama Angel Baby toiletries before? They do something called 'bottom spray' and a 'bottom balm' which are both lovely if you get a bit sore/have stitches/piles etc. They've got stuff like lavender and tea tree oil in them I think and they are quite cooling and soothing. They are made in the US but I got some via amazon and there are a few UK stockists. They also do really nice gift sets for pregnant ladies/new mums etc.

Oh yes, arnica tablets for reducing any swelling afterwards, and tea tree and lavender oil - add a few drops to your bathwater as it is antiseptic and very soothing.

31 wks

PS sometimes during transition you get really cold feet so pack some nice socks!

mellymooks · 01/07/2010 19:44

Hello everyone, it's so hard to keep up with this thread!!

Haven't packed a bag yet either, I like you swordfish wasn't very organised last time as was hoping for homebirth but got transferred half way through because of meconium, so ended up with not much there, fortunately the one thing I had hoarded was food which I was very glad of especially the big bags of dried fruit mix that had cranberries, sultanas and the like in I ate about two bags during and after labour and it made my 1st poo post labour very easy - sorry if TMI but you'll thank me I promise!!!!

Also because we left in a hurry we forgot the camera and only have about 3 poor photos off my partners phone of our DD in the 1st few hours, which I was always gutted about.

Finished work for 10 days now off on my holidays to Devon tomorrow hooray! Going with all of my partner's family which means 5 adults to entertain my toddler so I intend to rest sleep and eat as much as possible!!

ooosabeauta · 01/07/2010 22:15

Wow this thread is moving fast now! Enjoy your holiday mellymooks.

Haven't packed hospital bag yet, am only 28 weeks today so it still feels ages away, but I guess I'd better not leave it too late... Last time I was really grateful for having my lip balm with me. If you have many (many, many, many) hours of gas and air it can really help as you can get very dry lips. I didn't touch most of what I packed last time, birth plan didn't even come out , but definitely camera, lip balm, maternity pads, glucose tablets (I'm sure they helped at the end), clothes for me (x3 nighties - one to start, one to freshen up if possible if it's a long haul, one for after delivery) and clothes for ds (I brought along 0-3 because everyone had convinced me he'd be huge, but the clothes were massive on him!). I was out 4 hours after delivery so the magazine etc. didn't get touched, but I know I can't bank on that a second time.

Is lovely to read about people managing to keep doing exciting things like festivals! I've felt pretty rough for the last couple of weeks, starting with antibiotics and then having to go into hospital on very early Tuesday morning because I'd been up all night with strong stomach cramps. Medicom said call the delivery suite, who said come in for fetal monitoring in case it's causing distress. Was the weirdest thing to be back in a delivery room again. Thank God the baby was fine, just a jogging about a bit to ride the cramps (which I think were caused by an unripe nectarine ) but it has all knocked me out a bit for the week. Also ds sleeping terribly, so was up at 3 this morning and was hosting my NCT group's lunch today. I should really go to bed now! A while ago I think someone asked about whether the NCT classes are worth it and I'd say they definitely have been for me - not for the content so much as the friends. You'd rarely meet a group of friends all with babies exactly the same age without it, and we've met up weekly for the last nearly two years. It's great.

Love2Dance we went to Thomas Land in half term and stayed at the HolidayInn Express in Tamworth, which is straight down the road about one mile away. Obviously not a luxury country hotel, but was very clean and new with a lovely bathroom. They did an offer which meant a reduction in the ticket price, and virtually everyone staying there had toddler-sized boys with Thomas T-shirts on so I think it's a popular choice for visiting there. We loved Thomas Land and ds still talks about who he saw! But he is a fanatic.

Have rabbitted on a bit lot now and must sleep, but hope you're all well and hope you're feeling ok sassy.

MammyG · 01/07/2010 23:45

Hi all
Nope no hospital bag here either. Had totally forgotten all the things that are needed - will come back to thread later and make a list! I must get mine done soon. I was overdue by up to two weeks with both boys but am very wary of complications I may have as gallbladder thingy gets worse. My last attack really left me worried that it could induce early labour and I live 2 hours from the hospital.
Braving the attic tomorrow to see what I do/dont need. Dh really relaxed about things - oh we wont need that straight away, we can do that after the baby is born. Have had to light a fire under him as once he is back to work and I will be at home with 3 kids not a lot will be done at all! Plus as mentioned we live a bit away from any city so even shopping will have to be done soonish.
Skatter - Love the bump painting thanks for sharing.
Sassie - Friends who had gd all said the monitoring was a bit of a pain in the ass but other than that found support and help super. I have had it threatening me too but so far have escaped. One of my best friends had twins recently after a very tricky pregnancy and yes there is twice the worry - but you should see her gorgeous babies now - there is def twice the joy too!! all the best

MammyG · 01/07/2010 23:55

Oh and I am having a pedicure tomorrow! not just any ol pedi either - the deluxe one!! Thanks to recent birthday - all pressies from girlfriends and mom etc were for beautician so thought I would start with my poor feet. So excited worked out its been 3 years since I have been to a beautician!!! 3 years!! My 20 something year old self would have died!
Am also starting pregnancy yoga and relaxation next week - making the most of DH being home in the evenings. He is abandoning me for 3 days next week and leaving me with the boisterous duo on my own so making the most of getting the time back!!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/07/2010 08:22

MammyG I do antenatal yoga and I love it, but unfortunately my teacher is giving up so my last session is 14th July. The only other option I have is to travel to Cambridge, which is about an hour away and when I don't finish work until 6pm I really don't feel like it
I did it with the same teacher until 41 weeks with DS so it will be sad not to go.

Enjoy the pedicure, other than for waxing quite a few years ago I have never been to a beautician!

Jaysfourth · 02/07/2010 09:13

hi all, stranger here!

just to let you know i am still around, been quite busy and the heat is killing me ( as it is everyone else i am sure)

we also went to glastonbury, hired a motorhome and took all three kids with us. It was hard work, quite stressful at times, BUT it was great and the kids all loved it. Had loads of wonderful compliments about them, how cool they looked and how well behaved they all were, i was very proud.

Just had news that a lady on the due in August thread had given birth :O she is a month early, all well as far as i know, but just goes to show you, you can never be too ready!

Has anyone had any issues with reduced foetal movement? I'm still feeling movement, but a couple of days ago was lots of banging around, proper big kicks. Last day or so has just been small kicks and general wriggling - probably still adds up to more than 10 movements an hour, but I don't know if I should be worried that the movement is much less violent than it was before...! Thinking perhaps bubs is just facing a different direction. What do you reckon? Should I be calling m/w?

different position and also growing, so less room for the more powerful kicks but, if you are worried give her a call, she can always have a listen in and reassure you.
I think if you are still getting the quota of kicks ( 10 or so) then i wouldn't overly worry though.

On a diff note, is anyone getting a double/tandem buggy? which one, and whats good?

so hot again today

ive already got a phil and teds e3...secondhand its awesome, ive got to use it with two a few times (borrowed children!) and it pushes really well even with two! and i use it everyday with dd and never had a problem at all.
i also looked at mutsty duo's but theyre quite chunky and dont fold down.

hmmm...i have had the mountain double and also the mclaren double. A friend of mine has the phil and teds and has put me off a bit with certain moans about it. I was loking at the icandy but i cant seem to fathom the mechanics of it, seems a bit too technical. i got a secondhand (very cheap as it had a few broken bits) power jane tandem for when we went to glastonbury, but after using it for four days i discovered the cons of that also... i am starting to feel like i might have to make my 2 1/2 yr old walk everywhere, its just that with four kids i was hoping to be able to 'keep them un some control' with two in a buggy ( newborn and 2 1/2 yr old) and two walking (4 1/2 and 31/2) .... its a tough call really!

skyeplusbump · 02/07/2010 19:47

ohh, what were the cons for the phil and teds? i'd rather know now,so i can have back up!

Dixiebell, I've also found that the strength of the movement varies some days - I haven't worried too much about it so long as I've felt some definite movement. The figure I've heard isn't 10 in an hour so much as 10 over 10 hours - though the midwife did say she'd not leave it as long as that if she was worried about reduced movements! But as Jaysfourth says, if you do get worried then best to ring the MW.

Re movements - I was told at ante-natal 10-12 movements over 10 hours. If you are busy during the daytime and moving / walking about my midwife said the rocking of your pelvis would make baby 'sleepy'..... i was advised to have an ice cold drink of water and a high calorie snack and then lay down to count movements..... we were also told that if we were worried to phone midwife. hope this helps

Baby always sleeps when I have a long walk or am really busy. Usually it sleeps in a morning so I don't feel the first movements till around dinner. Cold or hot often makes them move, even resting the drink on my bump can get a kick. If you are worried do your own kick chart, mark off when you feel your 5th and 10th kick of the day. With DD1 this was within 10 mins of waking, with DD2 it could be easily 2pm.

I went off the Phil & Teds as they are only face forward and baby is very low to the ground. Folding up can be a pain with having to take the front wheel off.

I have a first wheels twin side by side with independent seats which can be facing forward or rear and a mamas & papas duette in front of other again they can both face forward and rear. And you can put a carrycot on either so they are flat. They both fold pretty well and don't take as much room as the Jane powertwin.
As well it depends on the age difference between babies, both I have got would be fine for twins. the forst wheels not for such a big age gap as the seats are a bit narrow
