I had my early scan at 7+5. Just because I could .

Thanks for showing me I'm not alone PESHlets. Feel like a right ungrateful beeyatch today. Just wish my ribs and belly muscles were feeling a leetle better.

My freaky tummy muscles have returned to haunt me. (this story will be such a giveaway if any of my RL friends happen to be lurking). During the medical you got in the 80s when you first started school (at school), I ended up being referred to proper doctor over a couple of unexplained lumps above my belly button. Further invesigations revealed that these were simply muscles, and after the initial panic that I had some bizarre medical condition, that was that.

Fast forward about 28 years, and those muscles are taking on a life of their own! When I tense my belly, instead of having anything resembling a two-sided six pack, I develop a pointy ridge right down the middle of my bump, so it resembles the hull of a ship. It looks and feels very strange . I'm hoping the muscles will stay tight together in the middle rather than separating fully, as they can do in some pregnancies. But they pain I am experiencing in them at the mo tells me I might not be so lucky...

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 12/04/2010 11:31

Regina - we're less than a week apart then. I am 9+1, according to THAT scan. Actually, the date confirmation that they can do from the scan is also pretty handy. So, you're feeling sickies eh? Hurray: someone to compare symptoms with! I actually have been pretty lucky on that front though. I had quite a bit of nausea at around 6 weeks but it has eased off and off since then. I now only feel a bit sick when I'm very hungry. Still have big sore boobs and the appetite of a wolf though, not to mention horrendous trapped wind yesterday, so hope that those are all "good" signs...

Curly your bump sounds pretty impressive. So sorry about the pains though. Hope that sorts itself out soon.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 12/04/2010 11:58

Aww cas that sounds not nice

reginaMonologue · 12/04/2010 12:27

switty - nice to have someone in the same boat as me, everyone else seems to have left the harbour and are on full steam heading towards the great Birth Canal, in the Vaginal Straits .

The nausea is the most annoying symptom, inevitably it is worse in the afternoon, or when I'm in Sainsburys, not aided by the copious amounts of spit I have as well. The only thing I've found helps it is cadbury's mini-eggs, but that could just be wishful thinking! The boobs are ok, I've gotten used to hefting them around now and have set up a proximity warning system so nothing gets within 2 feet of 'em, though the "warning, this vehicle is reversing" sound effects may be a bit OTT . Have also noticed the increased wind situation, but I'm beyond caring and getting embarrassed about it now, if you've got to fart, you've got to fart! The art is walking away wistfully and with grace! The only other minor annoyance is that which can only be resolved by eating prunes, which thankfully is working!

MW has just also agreed with pandoras suggestion of private clinic, though she did wonder why I was worrying so much and tried to boost my self confidence a bit. I burst into tears, which I don't think she was expecting, neither was I! Cursed hormones! Now I look like I have been slapped in the face, but I am hoping a short trip out to choose bathroom tiles won't be such an emotional experience.

skihorse · 12/04/2010 12:49

curly How odd you should say that, I was in the bath last night and saw that I had a ridge running down my stomach and just put it down to an elbow/foot but perhaps I too am a freak!

regina Ridiculous tears? Totally normal. Unable to look at a photo of a full-term pregnancy without wailing "but my vagina's too small" - totally normal. I wouldn't bet on tiles being non-emotional because I believe that type of shop has what they call "choice", not a good position to be in right now.

OP posts:
Cosmosis · 12/04/2010 12:51

Oh good lord, stay away from the tile shop, that sounds like a recipe for disaster. I was in tears in the Next changing rooms yesterday, I have totally lost the ability to make any sort of decision!

iggypiggy · 12/04/2010 12:55

Afternoon Peshlets - am well behind....

Can't get excited about spending any time on a computer outside work time - plus was such lovely weather I was out an about innit

Anyway - might try to catch up laters - but virtual absithne all round for now

pandora69 · 12/04/2010 12:59

Reggie I'm going to disagree with Cos here - shop for all you're worth! I completely rebuilt our house last time I was pregnant - lovely retail therapy! Tiles are right up there on the list of things that must be bought. Retail therapy so far this pregnancy has included a horse and a tractor, as well as large numbers of eggs and plants. Strangely I don't feel compelled to buy clothes. Probably a good thing really.

CurlyCasper · 12/04/2010 13:14

reggie shop while you can and suffer the emotional trauma later I'm banned from shopping till we have a new home.

sorry to keep coming back to stomach muscles, but can any of the second timers please tell me whether or not Braxton Hicks left them with "tired" and sore muscles? I'm starting to feel like I did a serious abs workout yesterday and my belly is very tender to the touch. Haven't noticed any BH, but I've heard it's entirely possible to miss them.

Could just be growth, but feels very sudden and different to general aches or round ligament pain.

ski glad you have a ship's hull too

I'll stop now. I promise.

Thanks for the house-luck switty, I'm actually quite nervous.

Very jealous of ski's weekend away and everyone's general outdoor antics.

Can I second the call for a rundown of your treatments cunty? MIL and SIL planning a spa day for us all in June...

Ponymum · 12/04/2010 13:27

reggie My first pg I had to wait until 15+5 wks for my first scan! It was so stressful. I had no idea that I could have gone for a private scan (had no idea Mumsnet existed either) but if I had known I so would have done it. Oh, and unfortunately everything is an emotional experience from now on...

ski Glad you enjoyed the weekend. Ridge down the middle of your tummy, like it is popping out in a vertical line? I have this too. Physio told me that is due to separation of my stomach muscles . Funnily, the only time I see it is in the bath. The instruction I have been given is to avoid any 'sit up' type movement where you are using your tummy muscles to sit yourself up. So getting out of bed involves rolling over on to my side, swinging my legs down, and rolling up sideways. If you've got it, you don't want it to get any worse.

pandy The Grand National. I chose a horse for MrP and he was all excited about watching how it would do in the race. Yes, it's the one that stood still at the start! He said he felt very cheated over that.

curls I still don't know whether or not I've had any Braxton Hicks, but my tummy hurts nearly all the time, and all different sorts of pain - aching all over, stretching, stabbing, pulling...

CurlyCasper · 12/04/2010 13:31

pony I think you have answered the question - perhaps i have been using my tummy muscles too often to sit up etc. I hadn't thought to change how I do things. Ta!

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 12/04/2010 13:49

I am interested in the stomach muscle talk, though obviously not going through the same as the rest of you. However, I have actually had a few days this week where my muscles also felt kind of sore, as if I had been working out (so not the case, sigh). I felt like if I didn't roll over carefully I was kind of "pulling" them. It was a funny feeling. Do you know what that could have been? I figured maybe just kind of stretching? But is it still waaay to early for that?

Any ideas?

Cosmosis · 12/04/2010 14:04

Erm, does anyone want a cot-bed? Barring a miracle last minute e-bayer, I am about to be the owner of 2! I won one last week, but am winning a second as well at the moment. It?s only at £21, so would be a total bargain if someone does want it!

rollerbaby · 12/04/2010 14:18

Stomach muscles? What are they?

Reg and Switty am also only a mere 11 weeks today. Luckily MS has more or less gone now although I can tell you that I went right off chocolate - anything carb laden or salty was more up my strasse.

The latest shocking symptom I noticed this morning is the fact that my areolas have basically sprouted big pimply things all round them. Utterly revolting. I wonder what would happen if I squeezed one?

VAG why were you worried about dildocam? I thought it was jolly good fun. Second time round i got the tummy jelly though which was quite surreal as it was just like on TV, except not.

Cosmosis · 12/04/2010 14:23

it's all right honeymoo, the boobs will start leaking soon for more eww factor!

iggypiggy · 12/04/2010 14:25

moo I was same re: wanting salty stuff - but now am opposite am am obsessed by cake... very obsessed... and I fink you are talking about Montgomery's Tubercules re: nipples... maybe google for more info

cos which cot is it?!

rollerbaby · 12/04/2010 14:34

Hmmm CAKE. Might have to go and buy some. What are your top five cakes?

Mine are:

M&S chocolate caterpillar cake
Chocolate cornflake cake
Brownies (hot with vanilla icecream)
Fairy cakes (esp from Hummingbird bakery)

Mr Moo likes Cherry cake - WTF?

I can't think about my boobs leaking it's bringing back nausea.

Bought some tops over the weekend from Next online in the hope that they will a) fit b) cover my burgeoning muffin top. They are from the maternity collection but are sort of normal and look ok with skinny jeans (except mine don't fit). Slippery slope from here, will I never wear a fitted top again? God knows what I'll do when we go on hols in June. Do you think I'll have a proper bump by then at 19 weeks or will I just look even fatter lying by the pool in some deeply unflattering swimwear?

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 12/04/2010 14:34

Mmm delicous salt-laden carbs. You can get pickle flavour crisps here - honey I think you'd like them. I recently realised they are manna from heaven. Black or green Tapenade is also high on the list. Yummy. Please please don't tell me I am not supposed to be having it BTW. My chocolate stash is also fairly untouched, though I do get the odd craving, which I naturally indulge. Anyway, I am glad we have a few first trimester peeps here, as we still have the long-haul so to speak.

Actually Reggie I also had a totally unreasonable fit of tears last week. Boyfy was telling me about the lunch discussion he'd had with a pregnant friend of his that day, who announced à propos of nothing, that she had no need of a midwife and no real interest in going down that road, as her twin sister had been very happy with the hospital and gynae she was going to. I then felt that: i) I was somehow a wuss for wanting one ii) that boyfy was indirectly having a go at that decision iii) that unlike that friend, I had no-one to advise me or tell me what they thought (no family near by). Cue: inconsolable tears. Boyfy was literally horrified and completely gobsmacked. We managed to untangle it in the end. Boyfy informed me humbly that as he will never have to give birth to anyone, as far as he is concerned, anything I want or need, he is with me all the way. This made me cry more. Of course.

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 12/04/2010 14:43

honey YABU not to include millionnaire shortbread in your top 5, though I concur with the caterpillar cake.

Apropos dildocam - just ewwwww

I have already eaten too much today and am now craving chocolate in all forms (but particularly cake).

rollerbaby · 12/04/2010 14:45

I'm literally off to buy CAKE NOW. Nom nom nom.

iggypiggy · 12/04/2010 14:48

moo

Top cakes:

  1. Caramel Shortcake (millionaires cake)
  2. Lemon Drizzle
  3. cheesecake (any)
  4. red velevet cake (I make this alot)
  5. carrot Cake

witty I was in tears on sunday cos the dog pulled on the lead and nearly pulled me off balance. note the word nearly. Nothing to cry about...

iggypiggy · 12/04/2010 14:52

VAG x-posted - you are so right... it is my number one.

re: dildocam... I had both abdominal and dildocam at my early scans (7 + 3 and 7 +6) both times. mainly so he could see better - the first time cos there was a problem and the seocnd time cos there wasn't - if that makes any sense...

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 12/04/2010 15:07

Just googled those Montgomery things. Very interesting. The good news honey is that they are very positive and healthy and apparently serve to lubricate and cleanse your nipples. How lovely. Interestingly, they are considered a possible sign of pregnancy.

Still feeling like cake are we, after that little bit of info?

If so, I must second cheesecake. You can get one here with a speculoos base and plain creamy top, which is quite simply divine. I have just had a plain cracker to calm the thread-induced cake craving. No, it wasn't the same.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 12/04/2010 15:14

witty that could be round ligament pain, esp if it's to the side. It can be STAGGERINGLY painful if it catches you wrong (use it to practise labour breathing ).

cas sounds like growing pains to me. BH shouldn't leave you like that as far as I know.

Like pony, I always roll carefully onto my side, then gently get up, head and shoulders first with the rest of the body smoothly following. Put knickers, socks and trousers on sitting down, not hopping on one leg!

This goes for everything. Getting out of the bath, don't pull yourself up straight up, rotate carefully onto your hands and knees and stand up slowly. Getting off the sofa, wriggle to the edge and sort of tip forward and up, don't "oomph" up from the back of the sofa.

Really with every movement try to mentally plan it to put as little strain on the joints as possible.

I've started with friggin' back pain today and am trying to pad my chair with as many cushions as possible. How I managed to work up until LC was born (well 2 days anyway) I have no idea.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 12/04/2010 15:21

I'm feeling old today. Would someone send me in the direction of a lovely cake recipe which I can make with my niece and nephew tonight, with ingredients I'm likely to have in??? Just to cheer me up

I have the basics (eggs, flour, butter etc), a couple of lemons, some chocolate buttons, that sort of stuff. Any inspiration for something REALLY EASY coz I am a crap cook.

Thanks.

vag did you see my knitting pattern request?
