bouncingblueberries · 12/04/2010 10:57

Oh they're fab aussie! I bought a pair last summer. I may have a jelly belly but I've got buns of steel

Also just ordered myself a new pair of fit flops online I love them as well, and wore them to death last year!

Was putting it off in case my ankles ballooned with this pregnancy, but decided this morning to chance it. Hoping the extra walking will keep those ankles in check and stop all the fluid build-up!

LCR how exciting about your wedding!

NichyNoo · 12/04/2010 11:17

Ooo....wedding LCR...you must be sooo excited! Whereabouts in the Greek islands are you going? I love Greece...so much so that we got married there 3 years ago!

Alice I know exactly what you mean about being kicked really hard. At first it was cute but now I'm thinking my little one might be a bit hyperactive! We have started calling him 'the ninja' as sometimes I get kicked in about 6 differnet places on my belly at once so we think he is using both arms and legs (and maybe even his head) to whack me!!

Cherry - hope your SPD gets better..it can't be much fun. I've started getting really achy pelvis/hips and thighs....not sure if it is mild SPD or not but it is starting to affect my sleep....can't imagine how frustrating it must be to be in pain all the time

I've got my 23 week anomaly scan on Wednesday...I'm a bit nervous but looking forward to seeing the little ninja on the screen again

LCRLCR · 12/04/2010 11:27

We're going to Santorini - neither of us has ever been to Greece before so simply cannot wait. Although I hear Greek men may rub my prego belly for luck...?

Alicetheinvisible · 12/04/2010 12:02

Right now i would love to be able to lie on a warm beach away from noisy children and housework.....

Is anyone else absolutely starving atm? I found i was constantly hungry at 18/19weeks, then it has been ok, but now (23wks today) i am bloody starving again. Had to have my lunch already. A ham, lettuce and tomato sandwich, half a bag of crisps and some colslaw. Still feeling ravenous!

NichyNoo · 12/04/2010 12:08

LCR - we got married on Santorini!!!!

Sunset wedding at the top of a cliff overlooking the caldera, followed by a meal in a lovely restaurant in Fira called Selene (pricey but I highly recommend it) followed by dancing the night away in a nightclub! Have a great time

bouncingblueberries · 12/04/2010 12:37

Waaaah! I wanna be on a Greek island right now!

(with a ham and coleslaw sandwich - is that wrong? )

CherryPie3 · 12/04/2010 13:05

the coleslaw bit is definitely wrong - yuk!

parkgirl · 12/04/2010 14:41

Thanks CherryPie3 for adding me to the list - nice to see my name in lights!

I actually do know what I am having - I had a triple test and came out high risk of downs, so I had an amnio. It was the worst time of my life - lots of tears but I had decided if the baby had downs would keep on with the pregnancy. It was the other chromosome diseases that I began to worry about. Anyway to cut a very long story short - I had both sets of results back and all was clear. The midwife asked if I wanted to know the sex and preceeded to cry tears of joy/relief/hormones as she said it was a girl...

I think if I got pregnant again, I wouldn't have the triple test - I don't think my sanity to cope with all the stress of the results and what happens next...but for now it has turned out fine and I am happy happy happy buying pink things!

marzipananimal · 12/04/2010 14:45

that's great about the test results parkgirl. We don't know whether ours is boy or girl, although I kind of wish we did now as I was sorting through all the dolls clothes I had when i was little and it made me really want a girl! (I will be happy with a boy though, honest)

parkgirl · 12/04/2010 14:48

Its weird because I thought the same as marzipananimal didn't mind which sex it was..but when she said it was a girl I was sooo happy!

Aussieng · 12/04/2010 15:03

Lol Alice and ADHD in the womb! I've had a few tears to the eyes moments when the baby kicks down there.

God Parkgirl - that must have been a hard time for you with the Amnio and all. If you had decided to keep the baby whatever the result was the amnio just so you could get prepared if necessary (just ignore me if I'm being too nosy).

Ladies, I'd like to ask a sensitive question since we have managed to cover some quite sensitive topics on here in a nice grown-up manner without falling out It really is just an idle curiosity question but it is a topic which I have seen arouse some strong emotions.

I think I would like 3 children if at all possible. Age goes against me and I'm not sure why I would put myself through ms again!!! I've read with interest some of the comments on this thread about people accepting that since this is the last child they are intending to have they will never have a girl, a boy etc and frustration from some of you that in having a third/fourth child you get the "oooh are you trying for your boy/girl" comments. On the other hand my cousin has just had a girl after 2 boys and I know she really really did want a girl. I was talking with DH on Saturday about having 3 young boys and how cute it would be to be playing football (Aussie rules) and cricket with them in a few years etc and admitted that I would however like a girl. He mentiioned gender selection and I just said that I thought it was illegal for anything other than medical reasons (at least in the UK and Aus) and I said that I would certainly never consider it for a third child and he asked how about number 2 then? And I had to stop and think - and I don't know the answer but for a reasons I can't put into words, I don't particularly warm to the idea. Is that just because it is illegal in the UK and so you are generally conditioned to think "bad" or is there something else? And then we got talking about things like would you tell them/always keep it a secret etc. We really were just talking. DH has no burning desire for a girl and while I'd like a girl I also like the three boy football team idea and being nearly 36 and having despaired of ever meeting the right person and having children at all in my early 30's I'm just very very grateful for how wonderful life now seems (DH being "difficult" last night aside).

Anyway - I was just wondering about some rational view on gender selection - did anyone consider it (even lightly like DH and I have done) or is it just a huge no-no?

mrsZaC · 12/04/2010 15:25

Hello again!

well I've finally caught up with all that I've missed over the last week. Been rubbish not having Mnet at work, as this is when I catch up with what everyone is doing, lets hope it doesn't go away again! Been lovely to catch up on all your chat, i enjoyed reading through everything.

Congrats to all scans and those who have found out what flavour they are having, and also to those who have passed the magic 24 wk mark. I'm intrigued, did I miss part of my post or did you find out what you were having starshaker? I'm going for 20wk on friday, going to be team surprise for me though.

Anyone having trouble sleeping? I've been having terrible trouble the last couple of weeks, I just can't sleep for any length of time at all, bought myself a dream genii yesterday which did help last night, I at least did nodd off for a couple of hours at a time. But I found I had to turn over to my right side in the night as it was just too painful to sleep on the left side any longer. I get pain in my shoulder and my hip which sometimes makes my bump ache too I might try and book in for some physio and see if that helps... any advice?

Also, this has probably been talked about 1000 times over but has anyone bought their pram/buggy yet or got one already to use? Think we will have to make some decisions soon as hubby works away and time is ticking on! thinking about Bugaboo bee but not sure how good it is from birth. I don't want anything too heavy to humpf in and out the car and from what I hear the more traditional pram type things are a bit too heavy and impractical once they get a little older. Any advice? not afraid of spending money if it will last for ages and will do for next baby (fingers crossed).

hope your all enjoying the sunny weather! xxx

Bubbabear · 12/04/2010 15:41

Hello, back off hols & its taken me ages to try & catch up a bit! Wedding & holiday was lovely & i did wear the more risky dress & had some sweet compliments (including the groom's mum saying i looked like a 'pregnant model' & giving DP a lecture in making sure he looked after me & bubs well - mind you she was easily the drunkest person there! Bless her lol).

We also had 5 days in Scotland to see some of DP family & friends, plus the weekend staying at a gorgeous hotel on Loch Lommond. Weather was perfect & it was so peaceful. We found a little quiet spot by the loch & had a mini picnic yesterday before the long drive home. Definately worth considering if anybody is wanting a holiday in this country.

Am so jealous of all of you who are getting your nurseries sorted out! I have a 2 bedroom house & have a lodger in the spare room at the mo, so probably wont be able to start getting it sorted until June / beginning of July! Have been eyeing up plenty of things to go in it though!

4 days and 20 minuites to go to our scan, am so excited!

marzipananimal · 12/04/2010 15:52

the gender thing is a difficult one aussie. I would ideally like to end up with at least one boy and girl but not going to think about it too much as it's out of our hands. I think my main issue with embryo selection is that I'm unsure about when I think the embryo/baby counts as a life - it's a difficult one but because I'm not sure I would err on the side of caution and treat them as a human from conception. I can understand that other people see it differently though. (Although I got upset the other day at some people complaining that Cameron is in favour of reducing the abortion time limit from 24 weeks. It's seems a very different issue when you're 21 weeks pg with a LO kicking inside you!)

Alicetheinvisible · 12/04/2010 16:24

Aussie to me it is immoral to specifically choose what you have. I feel it is only one step away from choosing eye colour, hair colour etc and it just 'feels' wrong, mostly because you know the choice would be exploited by some. I am very lucky to be having a boy after a girl, but at the end of the day i would be happy with just a healthy baby. I think the majority of people are the same. They may want a girl after 3 boys but if you asked them if they would give up one of their children to get that, i doubt you could find anyone who would.

Marzi I am very pro-choice, but i feel 24weeks is way too late for an ordinary pregnancy to be terminated. Both DD and this baby had been kicking me from about 18weeks, and it seems so wrong to kill a healthy baby at this stage.

These are just my opinions though, and i can only speak from my limited experience.

CherryPie3 · 12/04/2010 16:47

Aussie - Thats definitely a tricky subject on gender selection, I've never considered doing it but have thought a bit about the subject in general.

Marzi - WRT reducing the abortion time limit. I honestly think it should be 12 weeks unless theres a medical reason to terminate. I have felt baby moving from 15 weeks and like Alice, I feel it just seems so wrong to kill a baby that appears healthy.

parkgirl - Sorry I never thought to ask if you knew the sex already - congrats on your little girl!! How relieving that must have been after the worry of all the tests!! Have updated the list (again) with your pink news.

Bubba - Glad you had a lovely time - bless the drunken lady's comments - although they do say the drunker you get the more honest you are

MrsZaC - You poor thing, I'd definitely advise seeing a physiotherapist if you can. Maybe also have a word with your midwife as well and see if theres anything she can recommend/advise.

aussie yay another one on my side! yep she certainly didn't want to hear what I had to say did she?! lcr the thread was in pregnancy I think and it was about people's negative comments when you choose to have a c section for non medical reasons.

To cut a long story short I have a friend in the same situation and found it really hard to understand why she didn't want to try a vaginal birth and so I did talk to her about it before realising she didn't want to have her mind changed. Was telling the OP of the thread that I would've felt like a bad friend if I hadn't have said anything but have now shut up as I realise I wasn't helping.

She couldn;t understand what I was trying to say and it all got a bit bitchy...

Anyway whatever..

marzipananimal · 12/04/2010 16:55

yes I agree about 12 weeks cherry, especially given that you usually find out you're pregnant at about 5 weeks.

On a lighter note, I've had a productive afternoon phoning npower, water company etc ahead of the house move so feeling very virtuous. Hoping dh will cook me tea as a reward (despite the fact that he's done much more work than me today )

LilyPad72 · 12/04/2010 16:58

Hello! What I'd like to know is - where did the sunshine go? I was just getting used to that...

We've just been for our 20 week scan - all fine - and our little bun is a boy, apparently. Well, not 'apparently', definitely - I've never seen such a huge set of nadgers in my life! Not that I'm that experienced in nadger size... (Seem to be digging a big hole here - will stop now.)
Sonographer kept saying things like 'we'll have a look at the spine to check for spina bifida' and then going silent for what felt like a quarter of an hour 'no, that's all OK'. Phew! She really shouldn't do that - have had enough roller coaster rides already, don't need any more! (Cherry - could you update please? Thanks!)

Parkgirl - congratulations! Welcome to the 'slightly more mature' 1st time mums club. Good news your scares were just that - frights with no substance behind them. I know how you feel. Fingers crossed all plain sailing from here on in!

Aussie that's a hard one about gender selection. I know what you mean - I'd like one of each - so am delighted we have a boy this time, but would like to bias th odds in favour of a girl next time. Had not thought for a moment of actually doing anything about it, though. Is it like IVF - is there an increased risk to the baby of being put through the gender process? (I know nothing about it)? If there was, I don't think I'd do it - I'd rather just have 2 healthy babies, and if anything did go wrong - even the tiniest thing - I'd blame myself for having caused it unnecessarily, as it were. Tough one, though.

Right - off to finish my essay - may have to resort to a Doubledecker later...

CherryPie3 · 12/04/2010 16:59

5 weeks?

I think I was 3+ weeks when I found out - damn those early first response/clearblue digi tests

To me 12 weeks is enough time to make the decsion whether you want the baby or not. Just my opinion tho....

wow cherry, 3+ weeks. I suppose when you're trying though you find out earlier than when it's an accident. I was nearly 5 weeks when I took pregnancy test (although we were trying) cos I have fairly long cycles (which are also irregular) so I decided I wouldn't take a test until 37 days after LMP (I think i actually caved at about day 34 though as I'd had a few symptoms and couldn't bear the suspense)

LilyPad72 · 12/04/2010 17:40

Oh yes - and one thing I've (now) learnt from the 20 week scan - which I pass on to any of you who haven't been there yet. If wearing lightweight and light coloured summer trousers - make sure you wipe off ALL the gel from your tummy when they've finished. Otherwise you get some highly incriminating dark blotches on your trousers - which, if you don't have a convenient cardy or coat, are somewhat conspicuous when walking back down all those long hospital corridors on your way out...

LizzieA · 12/04/2010 17:48

Welcome to all the newbies

Parkgirl I had the same thing with the results from the blood test. It was the worst weekend of my life waiting for the results from the amnio which were all ok in the end. I don't think I'd bother with the test in any future pregnancy, I hadn't really considered the consequences of having the test and just agreed when the midwife offered it. That weekend I decided to keep my baby no matter what the amnio results were but it was such a huge relief to find out that Tadpole was fine.

On the abortion debate I'd agree with everyone who's said 12 weeks except for special circumstances (definite non viable pregnancy after the 12 week scan, welfare of mother - as in illness rather than lifestyle or social reasons). I pregnancy symptoms from day 1 so I think it's very rare to not have had any idea you're up the duff! I'm sure I read last year about a mother (who I think was doctor) arranging an abortion abroad for her teenage daughter at 20 ish weeks. Sorry if I offend anyone but that is just sick. I feel my bubs kicking away all the time now and he's already a little person.

On the work front, I received an phone call this morning from my boss telling me that my wheelie laptop bag has been ordered and offering me overtime for the weekend. Either my controlled strop last week worked or he's reading mumsnet and feels very told off by everyone's supportive comments!
