So here's the continuation of the thread previously known as Due May 2010: Where we get a 'bloom' just in time for the christmas mayhem???
Let's see if this one lasts up until the first birth... Knowing how chatty we can be, I doubt it!

MDM- i want to teach secondary science and am looking to start this year...although part time and can begin jan(2011) or april although will still be classed as 2010, because of the staggered enrty. problem is there is only one uni in the north west with flexible...so keeping my fingers tightly crossed. dont know what i will do if i dont get in

is anyone else having their mum/ family member/ anyone other than their partner go in with them? i had my mu and nan last time and were very supportive and not bothered about the time, plus they had both been through it...totaling 15 times. mum got to cut the cord and said she wouldnt want to miss this one even if dad is there...he wont be anyway so will be glad of the support.

LuckyC · 11/02/2010 11:51

Hi all - as ever, far too much to catch up properly.

Thanks all who gave advice over baby surname and sulky MIL. She did not actually raise the issue with us while we were up there, so I have just left things to lie. And to be fair to her she was very nice and thoughtful to me.

Bloody hell hobnob what a bast**d he was. Can't imagine what a tough one that must have been.

Labour. Watched a few clips of the Channel 4 show from their website and nearly passed out/ threw up with horror. I am going to have to improve on this! Am TERRIFIED.

We are having our first meeting with our doula tonight; will let you know how we get on.

Newmomma I have numb pins/needles/painful hands and arms which is apparently Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It is supposed to only affect your thumb and first two fingers, though apparently will also sometimes affect your arm (my whole arm goes numb.) It's worth checking out with your midwife though, especially if you are having numb feet and legs.

Peaky ARGH! Bad luck about house. What has happened? How can landlady do this to you????

sweetkitty · 11/02/2010 12:01

brightred - you can have Reuben then our surname begins with a R so R names are out for us which is a shame as liked Rebecca and Romilly for girls. We still haven't a clue. Happy Birthday to your DD. Is she starting school this year then? I said I will start really sorting things about about 33 weeks, I will still pack a hospital bag even if I get a HB as it's good to have everything in the one place for DP like nappies/clothes/hat/shawl etc plus all my bits like breastpads, big jammies and sani-pads of course and also in case we have to go to hospital for any reason. I have kept my nursing bras from last time as they are Hotmilk nice ones.

I need to start deciding on a pram and a sling though.

marquise - I think you can ask for a mask for the gas and air. A lot of people hate it but I love it, I don't think it does a lot to take away the pain really but it's a distraction and if you are sucking hard on it you are not screaming. The mouthpiece thing also gives you something to bite down on as well (sorry)

itshappenedagain - well done you on the teacher training, will keep fingers crossed for you.

tomlin - your names are lovely I sit on a cushion a lot now as well and try not to slouch.

Right must be about lunchtime

Carikube · 11/02/2010 13:50

Wasn't able to get on here yesterday.

Moggmum the programme was filmed at the hosp where I had dd (I had a moment whilst watching it where I said 'I recognize that theatre!!'). However I am hoping that I will have this next one at the MLU which I can confirm is only a 10 minute ambulance ride away from the hosp (having done it last time ). I don't know whether I'm being overly optimistic trying to give birth there again but I want to give it a go.

I didn't recognize any of the staff but as the MW from the MLU came with me in the ambulance and then stayed with me until I delivered, I didn't get to meet any of them that were actually on labour ward. However my community MW also does shifts there so I'm waiting to see if she shows up at any stage. One woman in my antenatal group did say that she had the MW who was featured in this week's prog and that 'she was just as bossy'.

MoggMum · 11/02/2010 14:29

Just had a call from my Mum to tell me that her friend's daughter gave birth yesterday. She went in to labour at midnight, went to hospital at 3am, had the baby at 6am and was home by lunchtime. It was her first and she was a week early. Baby girl weighed just over 7lb. Sounds like the perfect birth to me!

Carikube don't think you're being overly optimistic at all. I'm planning on having mine at the local MLU which is part of B'mth Hospital. Any complications and they transfer to Poole Hosp which is about 20 mins away.

sweetkitty · 11/02/2010 16:17

Moggmum - my first birth was 4h20m start to finish including 2 journeys to hospital, once to get examined and turned away only to come right back again. Would have got out later that day but DD1 was too jaundiced to feed.

littleowls · 11/02/2010 20:08

Evening all,

MdM - the link for the list of names from 2008 is excellent. Can't believe some of them! Just sat and scrutinised the lists else I would have posted 2 hours ago.

itshappened - Good luck with teacher training. It's great, I teach the Nursery and Reception children so I can't really give any advice about secondary teaching, but I do enjoy my job a lot!

angel - Very impressed that you have everything you need. Very organised! I think we just need a cot and drawers. Need to get hospital bag sorted soon - especially if they decide to ship me to hospital with my BP!

Moggmum - That sounds like the birth I have planned, ha.

Hope everyone else well, off to hospital again tomorrow for BP check. Your're right Pigley, it is a pain, looks like this will be it now until the end.

Hollyoaks · 11/02/2010 21:19

Hi all

Thanks for the supportive messages about my fears of getting to 24 weeks. I havent had a prem labour but my ds has had two, her most recent was at 31 weeks with my niece who is perfect now though slightly behind but her first was at 28 weeks with my nephew who didn't make it. After seeing two prem babies and the long-term hospital stay and ups and downs its quite worrying. Hope I haven't dragged anyone down over the last few weeks with my worrying and troubles but its nice to hear from you all.

Alimouse - happy belated birthday.

Birthing prog - watched it and like everyone else can't get over that husband. My husband would be needing gas and air if he tried to lock me in the toilet. As for the son, something tells me he probably won't need to worry about birth control.

BRB - happy 4th birthday to your dd

Its happenedagain - I teach secondary biology so if you need any help or advice don't do it just let me know

Just a quick health report too, been to gp this week as have a uti and an infected sebaceous cyst on my arm [ouch] so on abs and my dn has given me molluscum which is in the crook of my arm. I'm falling apart but blaming the pg and the huge workload that I'm under at the moment, hence not posting in a while.

Hope everyone else is well.

Hollyoaks · 11/02/2010 21:21

why's that not working

pigleychez · 11/02/2010 21:38

SK- Glad the MW was nice this time

My mum came out with some right corkers of name suggestions last night. She likes Jethro for a boy and Mika for a girl.. really not our cup of tea at all!

Moggmum- Thats sounds a nice quick one... Thats what ive booked for this time

Littleowls- I too used to teach in a nursery before I left with DD. Very busy but great fun

Had a nice day with DD and our friends DD's 3rd birthday party.
All the kids had a great time running about like looneys and trashing her house! There were also 3 younger siblings there... a 4 week old, a 9 week old and a 15 week old. Of course i had to have some practice cuddles!
Party messed up her sleep this afternoon so we have had a nightmare bedtime tonight.. Fast asleep now so fingers crossed it lasts!

mustbemadno3 · 11/02/2010 22:35

MDM You can have a mask or the tube you suck for gas and air. I had mask for ds1 and sucky thing for ds2. Much prefered the one you suck in as you can bite on it too and I felt more in control with that one.

We are Italian so our surname and both boys names are Italian. We have chosen so far - Sofia, Estelle, and Soren. Only Sofia is Italian but european name is on the cards as no english name seems to suit the rest of the family!
If the scan is wrong and its a boy then it will be Gino....oh I loved him on Im a celeb!

Feeling bit down today, must be the hormones, just had really busy week at work and don't feel as if I have anything prepared, never see dh at the min as so busy at work. My ds1 is soo lovely he ran me a bath made me a cup of tea only to be ruined by my dad turning up!

kateyjane · 12/02/2010 00:10

Hi everyone - once again I'm really behind, this thread moves so fast, I really enjoy reading everyone's news.
Am having a crap week so far, still feeling really low, I think due to lack of sleep! Have now been prescribed a new anti-histimine that also knocks you out. So hoping that it will have the desired effect. Have had all week off work, tried to go in on Tuesday but got sent home again. For some reason I seem to have started being sick?? Didn't have MS to start with. I am going to see the MW on Monday and have some more blood tests (including GTT) next week, so that might give me some answers. Sorry to always be the miserable one!

Good luck with your application itshappenedagain - I am a secondary English teacher and love it (most of the time{smile]}

Sweetkitty - Glad you had a better time with your MW, hope it continues.

Alimouse - Hope you had a lovely Birthday

MDM - When I had my first I asked for a mask because I didn't want to hold the mouth piece thing - I only lasted a few minutes before I asked for the mouthpiece back because sucking (and biting )was so much more satisfying!

I'm sorry I know I've missed some out - hope everyone who is feeling down or suffering with SPD and other things is getting lots of support

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

sweetkitty · 12/02/2010 08:20

hollyoaks - you do sounds run down poor you, are you taking enough pregnancy vitamins too? DD2 just got rid of her molluscum, she had loads of them. I think you cannot help worry about a prem labour, I still do and I have never had one either, I am a bit more relaxed at 28 weeks but I don't think you ever truly relax until they are out and well.

pigley - love your Mums names, just smile and say you will consider them

mustbemad - I love Italian names, Sofia is lovely. Hope you feel a bit better soon too.

kateyjane - ncie to hear from you again, sorry you are feeling so rough as well, these babies don't make it easy for us do they? Don't apologise for having a moan this is what the thread is here for, I don't know about anyone else but when someone asks you "how you keeping or how you feeling?" regarding the pregnancy I say "oh fine" instead of "well the SPD is crippling me, I feel like my pelvis is going to collapse any minute and at night I can hardly walk, oh and the heartburn, the piles and the pressure downstairs, I am feeling like shit actually!" I think you have to feel grateful you are growing a healthy baby and keep your woes to yourself a bit. But this is the one place you can have a good moan as we are all in the same place IYSWIM?

Right have a good day everyone, had a horrific night last night, I think each DD was up about 4 times each crying, I got up once , don't know what was going on they usually all sleep through.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 12/02/2010 09:50

Is everyone apart from me taking pregnancy vitamins? Should I be getting some? I took folic acid for the first 4 months, but haven't had any other supplements since.

Can't believe how many teachers we have on this thread! Nearly enough to start our own school, and a good spread of subjects too. I think you're all amazing! It must be so tough when pregnant to be on show at the front of a class teaching all day. If I'm having a grumpy day I can just hide in my office, moan to my lovely understanding room-mate, and otherwise keep my head down. I don't know how you teachers do it!

Kateyjane - I always wish I had done English A-level. I ended up doing languages at uni, which was a literature-based degree, and English A-level would really have helped! I now have a rather pointless knowledge of 18th century French and German literature and am sadly very ignorant of English! Was planning to try and remedy that during maternity leave, so any tips on what I should start with would be appreciated!

Marquise have you found I-Tunes U? Some really good English courses from some really good universities that you can download for free. I love it: www.apple.com/itunes/whats-on/#itunesu

Hope everyone with health niggles has a good weekend.

Met with doula last night: think we have made the right decision; she is calm and friendly and very reassuring as a presence. She is also quite straightforward about pain - instead of using those sort of NCT words like 'pressure' or 'sensation'! I still can't decide whether to go to the MLU or the John Radcliffe. I will probably end up having a homebirth through sheer indecision!

itshappenedagain · 12/02/2010 10:53

morning ladies!
sorry to hear some are feeling down, feel free to moan, as you can see from my posts i do a lot of it on here. i think hormones are also partly to blame.

hollyoaks i worry about prem labour and panic if i dont feel movement 1st thing in the morning. i had my Ds 4 weeks and 2 days erly, but was induced...they still classed him as term and hes never suffered anything because of it. a couple of friends have had prem labours one at 28 weeks and he is fine now after a little stay in the nicu, but she has been told his development will be slower whilst he is younger.

is anyone else worried about having a huge baby? Ds was 8lb 11oz, as i say early, and keep getting told that they get bigger each time...is this always the case? [hopeful emotion]

take care all have to go make a cape( superhero day in Ds's school) and finish packing the babg to go to mums for the weekend.

AnAngelWithin · 12/02/2010 11:03

yes itshappened again i am worried!!! the chart they gave me at my 20 week scan predicted the weight as 9lb 3!! !! ds1 was 8lb, dd1 was 7lb 3 (22 days early though!!) ds2 was 8lb 6, and dd2 was 7lb 3 (9 days early) Hoping its an early girl haha

im so cold. My fire has broken and the housing place are refusing to sort it. They say they aren't responsible for the electric fires in the houses. Then he went on to moan about why didn't i just put the storage heaters on. I told him that they are also so old an inefficient that I can only afford to run 2 of them on low! Then he said 'well haven't the new windows we put in a few months ago made any difference' well...they would if there was heat to KEEP IN in the first place!!! And if my front door wasn't blowing a gale through the gaps!!!

MoggMum · 12/02/2010 11:09

Hi, hope everyone's Ok - it's nearly the weekend

All this talk of prem labours is making me nervous as we're off on hols next week and I don't fancy giving birth on a Ryanair flight to Spain . I expect there'll have an additional surcharge for that anyway!

Had my 28 week MW app this morning (1 week early due to hols) and all is well - measurements are fine and got to hear baby's heartbeat again .

Having read some of your experiences with Midwives, I feel very luck to have seen the same one every time and she's lovely. We talked about the programme that was on TV the other night and she was quite shocked at the attitude of the Midwife who kept leaving that poor woman (with the annoying husband)on her own then telling her off for not pushing at the end!! Fingers crossed I get my MW for the birth although I expect that's unlikely!

Hobnobfanatic · 12/02/2010 11:11

Kateyjane _ funnily enough, I've started feeling sick again the last few days. I hope it's not staying for the third tri - I can't be doing with all that again! It's bad enough dealing with the hugeness of bump and all the uncomfortableness that comes with it, without having to contend with nausea. Urghghghghhg. Hopefully it's a passing bug...

rachelfruitloop · 12/02/2010 11:31

MDM I'm not taking any pregnancy supplements this time round (except the folic acid at the beginning) as last time the Pregnacare made me excruciatingly constipated, and my bloods have come back fine for iron. I like to think I'm eating healthily despite all the chocolate!

I also enjoyed having something to bite on during labour with the gas & air mouthpiece!

Angel that sounds terrible that your house is so cold!!! I hope that you're able to come up with a solution - that man sounds very unhelpful! Are the gaps in the door in a place where you could stuff in some newspaper or a towel up against it whilst you don't need to go in or out?

Itshappenedagain I am also really scared of how big this baby will be. DS1 was 9 lbs 12 oz and his head was 38cm! My bump is considerably bigger this time around (though I know my muscles are stretched from last time), and as I know it's another boy, I don't expect he'll be less than 9 lbs. The consultant said I can have a growth scan, but all over MN I see that these can be inaccurate. I'll be excited to see the baby again, though!

I hope you all have a nice weekend. I work on weekends only so I dread Fridays!

cupcakefairy · 12/02/2010 11:59

Hi girls, just a quick one from me to say mw was a LOT better yesterday and no tears from me (an achievement believe me!!) She was lovely and funny. Measurements all good and baby breech at the mo but obviously swimming around all the time so should be fine (though I am poking it a lot to make it move )

marquise I'm not taking any supplements either

I can't believe how many of you have everything sorted and even talking about hospital bags stop scaring me we have bought nothing I do have a list though...that will help right?

booboomonster · 12/02/2010 14:10

MDM - re gas and air - I didn't know there was an option not to breathe through your mouth, but to be honest a lot of those breathing techniques I found useful earlier on (I went to hosp at 6 cm dilated so didn't get gas and air til then) and later when you are pushing (I don't think you have gas and air when pushing but I can't quite remember). I personally found the gas and air so fantastic that I didn't care so much about the breathing at that point - and you can still do something similar. Also I don't think you need to worry about vitamins, unless you are feeling under the weather - I didn't take any (apart from folic acid like you for first few months) first time around and never had any probs with iron or anything.

Itshappenedagain - impressed that your mum and nan were present at your last birth. My mum would be a nervous wreck! I am glad you've got someone you can rely on.

Re One born every minute, I really enjoyed the programme, and am looking forward to the next ones. I thought it was all pretty realistic, which is what I liked - like the time it takes, etc. But the DH was a tw*t - I would have stabbed him with a sharp implement quite early on. But as someone else said, the mother didn't seem annoyed, so maybe it works for them!?

Hollyoaks - sorry about "falling apart" (as it were!) - hope you manage to take it a bit easier. Can you take some sick leave and put your feet up? Sounds like you have enough reason to, but I know it's hard for teachers. Good luck!

All fine here. Looking forward to the weekend, work is totally disinteresting me at the moment despite me usually liking my job. I just can't focus! Need to do some more nesting. hope everyone has a good one.

booboomonster · 12/02/2010 14:13

cupcake lists are great - I'm a good list-er... i'm waiting to buy stuff until I'm on mat leave and can be in for deliveries! although don't need much this time as have it all from last time. I did sort out about 200 baby vests a couple of days ago - tedious job but sense of satisfaction now. And I'm not going to pack hospital bag just yet - I'd be too worried i'd forgotten something and would end up having to double check it all. Plus, not sure what size clothes/ bra I am going to be in then! Anyway, don't worry - you've got loads of time, and those are the fun jobs...

Hobnobfanatic · 12/02/2010 15:38

Booboomonster and MDM - I think they take the gas and air away for the pushing bit anyway, as you need all the oxygen you can get and full breaths etc.

sweetkitty · 12/02/2010 16:18

hobnob - no one has ever taken the gas and air off me for pushing, I don't think anyone would have been brave enough lol

I will have to get DP up the loft to sort through the baby clothes in a few weeks so if anyway wants lots of baby girls clothes let me know, will be willing to post them. I feel sad that they won't get used again and I suppose the boys things won't get used again either. They are just so cute and lovely it's horrid to throw them out (well to the charity shop).

I take a Sanatogen multivit with iron and an Omega 3 capsule plus extra calcium. I'm practically veggie so figure I might need some additional B vits and iron and as I have had 4 babies in 5 years I'm feeling a bit clapped out and need all the help I can get, have been pregnant or BFing since Nov 2003 so figure it cannot hurt my poor knackered body.

cupcake - glad your MW appt went better and don't worry I am not organised at all either. With DD1 DP had to leave the hospital and go buy a base for the car seat before we could bring her home, she was early and we thought we had plenty of time to sort it out, she was only 15 days early though.
