So here's the continuation of the thread previously known as Due May 2010: Where we get a 'bloom' just in time for the christmas mayhem???
Let's see if this one lasts up until the first birth... Knowing how chatty we can be, I doubt it!

OOps - and happy birthday, Alimouse!

cupcakefairy · 10/02/2010 12:04

I didn't watch the show but sounds like that guy was an idiot!! Dh and I read a book that said it is likely a woman will only properly hear her partner's voice during labour so he should repeat any instructions or questions from midwives/doctors clearly to her...I thought that seemed quite nice (they put it less patronisingly than I just did)
I know I'll probably be totally irrational during labour so will need dh to be alert and speaking for me!
People who aren't first timers- how do dh's get treated in the labour/delivery rooms? Cos when I had my mmc I had to go through a 'mini labour' to get the baby out and dh was virtually ignored all day at the hospital.. no doctors who came in introduced themselves to him, nobody offered him food etc...I was so angry about it, it was his baby too

marquise I'm totally irritable at the moment too so it's not just you! Last night I flipped out at dh cos he asked me 'are you actually hungry?' when I was eating rice krispies at 10pm (I can't get enough of them late at night)

We have definitely decided a girls name (unless she looks nothing like the name in which case we have 2 backups!) but yet to settle on a boys name, there are none we LOVE, just ones we like..which is rubbish! We're not telling anyone though as want it to be a surprise but we're on edge incase the names get stolen between now and May! (our fave boys one did already by some friends, Jude...so we've gone off it now!)

LolaAnn · 10/02/2010 12:41

cupcakefairy you aren't the only one struggling with boys names, and we know our is a boy!!! can' think of any... oh dear...

Something must be in the air!!! I cried myself to sleep last night poor DH didn't know what to do with himself. Just hormonal and couldn't stop crying.. sigh

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 10/02/2010 13:38

Happy birthday Alimouse!! Hope you have a fab day

I didn't see the show either but the guy sounds like a prat. DH was fantastic in labour and has only recently admitted to me how terrified he was.

Cupcakefairy - my DH was treated really well in labour (MWs kept bringing him food and cups of tea ). My DB had a horrible time - his partner had to have an emCS and no-one came to tell him that his son had been born and that they were both OK (he wasn't allowed in because it had to be general anaesthetic). He didn't even know for over an hour after the birth and was convinced they'd both died That was a particularly rubbish hospital though. I think you just need to be prepared to push (excuse the pun) for good treatment.

Re names - we don't discuss them with other people because we've found someone always says something (often unwittingly) that puts you off. Having said that, I've got no idea this time round.

Gils · 10/02/2010 13:50

Hi girls

Haven't posted for couple of weeks, new thread and everything - boy we move fast!!

Glad to hear everyone doing well, sorry if this post lacks anything personal but way to much to catch up on.

Re names we have numerous girl names we like but can't settle on anything. My DH really wants Ewan for a boy but our surname is McGregor so I am less than keen. Already had a few comments when we have spoken to others about it. He says no to all other names. I do like the name though.

I am getting increasingly jealous of all of you who have found out the sex of baby. We would need to pay for private scan but I used to be so against it and now wish we had some spare cash to do it. Can't help thinking it would be nice to find out. DH desperate for son, I am not fussed but think DD would like girl. She speaks to my belly all the time. "hello baby I'm your sister" "I love you baby". Gets upset baby doesn't speak back!

My mum is doing better. Had her op on broken shoulder 2 weeks ago and is coming on well. Her care (in hopsital I am going to) was appalling. Started her proper physio yesterday, actually lifted her arm up which they said they wouldn't do for 6-8 weeks. She can't move today though. I am still running about like a mad woman. Taking them to appointments, cleaning their house, looking after niece etc. At least dizzyness seems to have stopped.

Feel sorry for DD, started potty training the Thursday before mum fell and although she is doing well in house just don't feel I am giving her the attention she should be getting and haven't really tackled leaving house in pants yet. Also looking after my niece a lot and I can see DD picking up lots of her bad attitude. She can be a little madam

Just found out DH isn't going to make it home tonight. Have no babysitters so looks like I am gonna have to speak to boss. Only first day back since Wed last week, couple people making comments that I am hardly hear. Oh well.

Sorry for long post. Speak to you all soon.

Gils · 10/02/2010 13:51

Oh happy birthday Alimouse!!

Yes watched program, guy was so annoying but don't understand why son was there. Missed beginning, was there a reason?

pigleychez · 10/02/2010 14:11

Re names- We have a few ideas but havent settled on anything yet. Mum keeps coming up with suggestions for us. Sweet but her suggestions are not really our cup of tea! DD's name is quite a traditional, normal name which is the type we like yet mum is coming up with the most chavvy and Bizarre names she can think of. Having to be rather diplomatic in my responses!
We havent mentioned any of our shortlist ideas as I just know everyone always has an opinion.

Yes.. last nights programme sparked converstaion about DH's role during my labour too. DH was pretty well looked after and bought cups of tea and even got toast after too. I think the Midwife took pity on him as we had been there 27 hours. She gave him the job of monitoring my BP. He is an expect at using BP machines now. She also taught him how to massage my feet which he did but when she left the room I told him it wasnt helping and he said he thought it was just to occupy him more!

Gils- Glad your mums doing well

Went out this morning and didnt mangage to get a thing I wanted. I hate days like that.. they are soo annoying.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 10/02/2010 16:00

After all the comments about the complete nob-head of a husband on the C4 programme, I have to watch it now! Will make DH watch it with me so that I can make a few well-placed hints about what I will and won't consider acceptable behaviour from him in the delivery room!

Cupcake - I am also worried about names we like getting used before May! We have 5 close friends (including my DS) due before us, and am paranoid that one (or more ) of our favourite names will be 'stolen'. We haven't told anyone what's on our shortlist, as I don't want a) anyone to feel like we're trying to lay claim to certain names or b) people to make negative comments / have reactions that might put us off. Might run some of them past you lot nearer the time though!

My all-time favourite girls' name got vetoed very early on by DH - he just doesn't like it (didn't tell him it was my favourite at the time). Fortunately there's a fairly similar name that he really likes.

AnAngelWithin · 10/02/2010 18:17

gosh i can't keep up !!!

Hope you had a nice birthday Alimouse!

Heffa yes, anaemia is a reason to deny a homebirth in case of PPH. I was borderline last time. It came down to just one last blood test! it was worse than sitting an exam and waiting for the results!! I just scraped through!

Gils glad your mum is doing better

I watched the birth programme. DH wasn't much use in labour (he hated seeing me in pain bless him) but god if he had done anything like that bloke on that programme...he would be divorced!!!

We have pretty much decided on a girls name. Boys names...er....we are STUFFED!!! lol We like Willow for a girl.

Had my mothercare order arrive today. Thats it. I think I have everything now!!!

MoggMum · 10/02/2010 18:36

I also watched 'that' programme along with DH who instantly recognised the annoying micky-taking husband as someone he went to school with . Apparently he was the same then too! I've decided that I don?t want DH at the birth now unless he promises not to laugh at me or inflate a rubber glove and prod me with it during my contractions! Only kidding but we did laugh and couldn't believe their teenage son was there to witness the whole birth experience !!

Dreamt that I gave birth last night - the labour was a breeze and we had a girl! Wishfull thinking perhaps

Carikube are you having this baby at the same Hospital?

littleowls · 10/02/2010 19:48

Hello everyone,

Had parents' evenings for the last 2 nights so am so so tired. Just caught up with all the posts. It's not wise to leave it 2 whole days!

I watched that programme too, I also cried throughout - especially when the poor girl was shaking and so scared. Totally share everyone's sentiments about the wally with the glove. I couldn't believe he was like that. He was maybe just excited! The son being there too was a bit of a head scratcher...do you think that was his parents way of deterring him from having sex? A good method of contraception maybe!

Have been to the hospital today about BP, a bit higher today 140/100 but it was consistent. I was surprised when they gave me a bed and I had to lay there for a while monitoring the heartbeat. LO had hiccups for ages! They don't really seem to know what to do with me as everything else is normal, so they sent me away. Have to go back on friday.

RE Names - we have discussed these and have a few names but the one DH likes was a bit unusual at first and I wasn't keen but now it has grown on me! Everyone has opinions or knows someone with the names you suggest that they don't like etc. So now I don't care about what others (family) think anymore, just gonna go with what we like.

Happy birthday Alimouse!

Hope everyone else is well

Den26 · 10/02/2010 20:01

Hi All,

Happy birthday AliMouse!!

Hobnob - it was me who was talking about aquanatal. Went to first class last night (i too have a 20+ mile round trip) and found it was totally worth it. There were 13 of us all together, all at different stages of pregnancy which was nice. Classes run by midwife who said she was happy to answer any questions we had. Found the class so relaxing and had one of the best nights sleep i have had in a long time Definately going back next week.

Re One born... Watched it too. Totally agree about that poor ladies husband - what a twat! And it all seemed weird to me that her son was there too Think it stressed DP out a bit though - he was asking why are you watching this and putting yourself through seeing others labours - think it was his own insecurities!!

Angel - i'm impressed Your so organised!

Gils - glad you're mums better - hope your looking after yourself though too!

Re names - DP wants the name to begin with an R which limits us somewhat!! Any suggestions for boys names beginning with R??!!

cupcakefairy · 10/02/2010 20:21

Ralph! I love love love the name but we can't use it cos our surname is one syllable beginning with R and it sounds silly...

Hobnobfanatic · 10/02/2010 20:24

Den - aquanatal sounds brilliant. I think I'll make the long trip and give it a whirl!

Names: annoyingly, I can only think of boy names, which, considering we're 80 per cent sure bump is a girl, is a problem! there's one name we both like,. but DP insists on pronouncing it the Welsh way, which I don't like... Arghghghgh. As with shopping, I'm sure we'll get there eventually...

Hobnobfanatic · 10/02/2010 20:31

Erm... R is hard! Why does your DP want an R?

Littleowls- I was up the hospital lots with DD and high BP. Always sent home again after about an hour of montioring.
Hope the BP behaves itself.

Mogmum- Seems we were both giving birth last night!!

Angel- Willow is lovely. My friend had a DD about 4\5 mths ago and called her Willow Olivia. There surname begins with W too so her initials are WOW..

DH took me out tonight for a suprise early valentines meal at our favourite chinese. Bit early I know but last time we went on valentines night it was heaving, and we got crap service for double the price.
Anyway had a nice dinner and now full to the brim!

Den26 · 10/02/2010 21:20

Wow! Thanks for the suggestions folks!!

He wants it to begin with R as the males on his side of the family all have initials RK!! Thats the only reason really! I really like the name Brayden (B not R i know!!) but not sure if that sounds too feminine?

Pigley - chinese sounds good

I've developed a need for crunchy nut cornflakes in the last week or so! !

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 10/02/2010 21:23

For names, I can recommend the office of national statistics website which lists all the names of babies born last year (well, 2008 actually) in order of popularity. A great help if you're trying to avoid ones that are too popular, and also brilliant for a laugh if you scroll far enough down the lists and spot all the very bizarre variant spellings of quite normal names!

Angel - We like Willow too, but as our surname is sort of tree-related, we thought it would be a bit much as a first name, and have got it in our list of possible middle names instead.

Den - I think most of the regular 'R' names have been covered by Hobnob and Pigley, although there's also Raphael/Rafael (another one of mine that DH has vetoed!). I don't know how conventional you are on the naming front, but if you're looking for something unconventional / out of the ordinary / not mainstream, then my baby names book has the following more daring suggestions:
Racer, Rancher, Raleigh, Ranger, Rocket, Raven, Redford, Reef, Rex, Rhett, Ridley, Riley, River, Rowan, Rock, Roman, Robinson, Ruskin, Roxbury, Royce, Ryder/Rider, Ryker, and Ryland.

Just waiting for DH to get home from work so we can have dinner and watch One Born Every Minute. Will let you know my verdict tomorrow!

Den26 · 10/02/2010 21:41

Thanks MDM! WIll also check out that website.

Another question! (sorry - can you tell i am bored tonight?? )

Re movements - i'm getting kicks quite low down but also movements around my belly button. Occasionally i can feel a pressure under the bottom of my right rib cage - anyone any ideas how the baby may be lying and what the pressure could be?...

sweetkitty · 10/02/2010 22:41

So many posts to catch up on and I should really be going to bed soon. Had a nice day today it started off badly I was so irritable and emotional this morning but DD1's school had an open day so we went to that well twice as DD2 wanted to go for a visit as well. Phoned the evil MW today and she was surprisingly nice, said it was good the baby was Ok, that she would sort out my grant form and book my HB. SPD really getting me down as well, there is so much I want to do but can't, I hate having to take it easy.

Oh that programme last night, if DP had said or done anything like that to me we would not be having a 4th child, what an idiot. his poor wife. Glad I wasn't the only one crying through it as well. I always cry as I know how much it hurts and how you feel you cannot do it and would do anything to make it stop then that feeling when it is all over and you see your baby, nothing like it in the world.

Oh names my specialist subject, I am always on the Scottish Govt website which gives every name registered last year. Still don't have a clue what to call this one. She was supposed to be Isabella Seren Mary but erm she is a he so there we go.

Den - the baby could be moving all over the place so hard to tell with the kicks. Early days yet. An R name, I like Reuben myself.

Angel - you are SO organised, I only have some babygros and vests.

I have to admit DP has been fantastic in my labours, the first two he said "I got a leg!" the last one she was out before anyone knew it. I don't like to be touched or anything but just like to know he is there and to share that moment when the baby is born well without being too slushy it really brought us closer together, he is in awe that a baby came out of me and it's like you share something so special IYSWIM. Just hope he is at this one's birth.

pigley - you have very good taste in names if you have another DD you can "borrow" DD2's name

brightredballoon · 10/02/2010 23:36

Hi everyone

Its late, I should be in bed, just been wrapping DD's 4th Birthday presents for tomorrow and putting up some banners etc. This the first birthday she has been really excited about, its funny when they suddenly make sense of things.

How is everyone? I am so hormonal at the moment, is anyone else like that?

Oooh SK, we like that R name too!

I packed my hospital bag today. I think it was from watching that birth programme last night and me getting sore twinges in my CS scar, I am worried that my house is so disorganised and DH will have a 4 and 2yr old to see to that he wont want to be faffing in boots asking for maternity or breastpads etc! I still have to do the baby's bag though, all those clothes and blankets etc are in the loft, need a huge sort out.

Den Maybe your baby is curled up along one of your sides (when you lie on your back e.g in the bath, does your bump have an uneven side?) could be baby's head banging your ribs and kicky legs down below? I feel baby is trying to stretch my bump sideways so I wonder if mine is transverse at the moment?

Hope everyone is ok, nearly the weekend

TomlinTowers · 11/02/2010 00:00

Hi All

Just a quick post before I head off to bed. DS1 up coughing so just having 5 minutes to see if he settles back off to sleep. Roll on the summer, am getting fed up of cold and cough bugs!

Names - we have decided on Sophie Mae for a girl, and Jack William for a boy. DS1's name is pretty straightforward as well - we don't do adventure in our family! Very impressed with all the R names - I could only think of Rupert and Robert!

Didn't watch "the programme" last night but the guy sounds like a complete idiot. My DH was treated like a King by our midwife. At one point, they decided that HE looked tired, and went and fetched him the recliner chair from the midwives' rest room so he could "put his feet up". Meanwhile, his wife who had been in labour for 8 hours+ with another 5 to go and nothing to eat for over 12 hours, was just left to get on with it because I wasn't at 10cm so couldn't push! We still laugh at that one... . Although DH was fantastic throughout the labour, I couldn't have done it without him. He just understood what I needed and did it with no fuss - he was brilliant. He did read every book on childbirth though, because he was really worried about what he needed to do if something went wrong, so I think he was more clued up than me!

Went to physio this aft to try and sort out back pain. Basically told to do more pelvic floor exercises, more lower abs exercises and make sure I have about 50 pillows with me at all times to support my back. Can see that going down well at work...although to give physio her due, have sat with cushions all around me tonight, and feel much better, so let's hope there's something in that. How you ladies with SPD cope I can't imagine!

Happy birthday to alimouse and hi to all the newcomers!

itshappenedagain · 11/02/2010 09:34

morning all!

looks lovely out here today, but freezing in reality. i too had a strange dream last night, where i kept giving birth to children(over many years) who never spoke and couldnt do anything...plus i was married to someone who i know through work . other than that i had the best nights sleep in ages!
my plan for today is to get the house a bit more sorted...must be nesting, and wash all the baby clothesand bits i have bought. im off to my mums for the weekend and shes said to leave it till i get back as i she will get me some bits whilst im there. ive made baby a draw for all her little bits, and am currnetly trying to find Ds a wardrobe that goes witht eh furniture he already has so she can have the baby wardrobe. alos have to fill in application for teacher training, but am going down to my old uni to get some help and pointers!

hospital appointment went as well as could be expected, and consultant was lovely, have been put on more steroids, to try and get asthma under control and have to increase nebuliser dosea s well as inhalers. going every week for the next 4 weeks and if it improves then she has agreed that my homebirth may be a possibility, as long as i go and see her again when im 36 weeks. so fingers crossed.

regarding names, i think i ma settled on one, but still have to decide on a boys name, just incase they were wrong at scan and i have another boy!

take care

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 11/02/2010 10:04

I thought One Born Every Minute was really interesting, but I was slightly disappointed with it. I would have liked to see more than two couples (or maybe just less of the annoying bloke!), and I thought it could have done with a narrator or something to explain about the different stages of labour, dilation etc, especially as the music soundtrack they had used often made it hard to hear what the midwives themselves were saying. I agree that the policeman bloke was a complete cock. Although, as DH pointed out, apart from the bit with the glove, his wife did seem generally not to mind his behaviour. I would have wanted to punch him.

I too had a 'giving birth' dream after watching OBEM! Fortunately in my dream it just kind of slithered out after only a few contractions. If only!

Question about the gas and air which occurred to me after watching the show... Does anyone know if it is always in a thing where you have to breathe it through your mouth, or can you have it as a mask so you can breathe through your nose? The reason I ask is because all the breathing exercises that we've been taught in antental yoga (that are supposed to help with labour) involve breathing in through your nose and out of your mouth.

Itshappenedagain - good luck with the teacher training application - do you want to do secondary or primary?

Hobnobfanatic · 11/02/2010 11:00

MDM _ I loved that the prog only had two couples per episode. It gave all the long slog - the boring bits included, to give a realistic picture that labour is a marathon. I'd have been disappointed if they'd just shown edited highlights!

I'm really looking forward to the next seven progs - and quite like the lack of narration. I'm happy just to be a fly on the wall and witness different births. I hope they include a miracle 'quick and painless' one in the series to give us all hope!

It'shappened - that's great news - the HB sounds a real possibility. FINgers crossed that your asthma gets under control for it.

TOmlin - I had to laugh at how well your hubbie was treated while you slogged away. Typical!
