So here's the continuation of the thread previously known as Due May 2010: Where we get a 'bloom' just in time for the christmas mayhem???
Let's see if this one lasts up until the first birth... Knowing how chatty we can be, I doubt it!

I swear my Dr's surgery are useless!- Went to pick up my prescription for the iron. Pre -agreed it would be liquid form as I have great trouble taking tablets. Typically its made out for the tablets so now have to wait for the DR to call me now.

Picked up a form for the maternity exemption for prescriptions and the receptionist asks "Are you pregnant then?" No shit shirlock!! I wondered what that lump in front of me was! They drive me crazy there, Im so tempted to change surgeries!!

Pamlet- Are they with agencies? My mum has just stopped cleaning through an agency and its more as the agency take their cut before paying the actual cleaner. My mum was getting £8 per hour.

Tomlin- sorry no advice on the Step B

Firstbump- Ask away on here Nothing is silly at all. Sorry you are feeling like that. My sister had her DD 8 weeks before I had DD and some family were abit like that too.

Littleowls- No idea about the growth scan and small babaies.. I think im going to have the opposite problem but with a huge Heffer of a baby!

CornishSAMum · 05/03/2010 12:06

TwentiethCenturyHeffa I live in Saltash, just on the border too but further south than you. I don?t feel so bad reading everyone?s posts cause everyone is so supportive, I?ve learned so much on here, what would I do without you ladies, I?d never know >>collective group hug

Oh, forgot to mention/ask, is anyone else having a visit from the Health Visitor? I got a letter a few weeks ago saying she's coming to see me next week. Is everyone else being visited too? What can I expect if anyone has had theirs recently?

AnAngelWithin · 05/03/2010 13:16

hello all

just a quick post. will answer individually later. I can barey keep my eyes open.

MW been. Bump measuring 30 weeks (28+4 by dates) Had bloods done. Also tested me for OC after seeing the state of my arms and watching me constantly itch my tummy and legs while she was sat there She said to keep an eye on babys movements too. My mood assesment was good (considering the past few weeks!) Babys heartrate was 128. my BP was ok. Should get the results by wednesday, MW is ringing me. If babys movements decrease/stop I need to ring the hospital.

Hope you are all well.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 05/03/2010 16:24

Cornish - it was me saying I'd had to book early for the NCT classes, but as far as I know you can join the NCT as a member at any time without having to sign up for classes. Then you can go along to the coffee mornings, nearly-new sales etc. Check out www.nct.org.uk/in-your-area to see what they have near you.
Not heard anything about a health visitor where I am, and midwife didn't mention it the other day, so maybe it's only in some areas?

littleowls - it's my first too, so I can't offer any help on the small babies front, but I do remember seeing a thread on here (think it was in the 'pregnancy' topic) a few weeks ago about exactly that (tried to find it again to add a link, but can't find it now - sorry). There were so many people posting on that thread to say that they'd been told they were having a tiny baby and then ended up with a 7lb / 8lb / 9lb baby, and vice versa, that it made me think that the measurements should really be taken with a pinch of salt.

Pamelat - I think £12 per hour sounds fairly expensive for a cleaner, and I'm in London! Ours is £25 and is meant to stay for about 2 1/2 hours, although when I was working from home the other day when she was there, she only stayed just under 2 hours, which included ironing 5 of DH's shirts, which I'd given her an extra £5 for, so she's probably in and out in about an hour when I'm not there!

Hi girls, sorry I've been quiet, find it very hard to keep up with this thread! Have only skimmed the last few days sorry. Caught a few comments about feeling huge and I sympathise! Everyone keeps raising their eyebrows when I say I still have 11 weeks to go, hmph!

Pigley my due date buddy, I also sympathise on the de-fuzzing front!! Have always done it myself but it is getting increasingly difficult! I've only ever had it done professionally before my wedding so think I will have to brave it now and find a salon to do it before the birth!

SK thanks for the Primark tip, I hadn't even twigged to look there for stuff like hats and mitts - I wanted some but Mothercare etc seem to charge the earth just for tiny little hats that will only fit for a week. Will be popping to Primark soon

Saw midwife yesterday who stuck both my arms trying to get blood and was v painful I now have a giant purple bruise even though she was showing off about how good she is at taking blood
Baby is now lying across...45 degrees closer, keep it up baby! (Was breech last time)

Watched OBEM all the way through for the first time Tues and really glad I did. Even though Joy's labour was long, both of them didn't seem 'scream your head off painful' like some others I've seen and I was amazed how quickly Kelly's baby came with barely more than one push. That, I can do!

Finally getting a stash of baby stuff together too including a Close sling and our iCandy Cherry (both ebay bargains!) and we have a house to move to in 3 weeks! Yippee (yes we are mad!) Welcome to newbies, especially Kaffacakes as I see you're househunting too...come join my madness

sweetkitty · 05/03/2010 17:02

Happy Friday everyone, not much to report here. Had an architect visit the house today and it looks like an extension might not be straightforward. SPD hurting like hell too, constantly on painkillers now.

cupcake - Primark and the supermarkets are good for picking up bargain hats/socks/mitts etc I think Mothercare are such a rip off as well. Good luck with the house move too

Littleowls - I have heard so many stories of presumed big/small babies and the opposite has popped out. My best friend was scared as she was told she was going to have a huge baby and it might not fit through her pelvis and she might have to be induced etc and her DS was about 7lbs, going the other way I have heard of small babies being whoppers, I was told DD2 could be about 7lbs and she 9lbs 3ozs. Their weight gain varies so much especially in the last few weeks.

CornishSAMum - our HVs visit a few days after the MWs sign you off from their care so after 10 days, that's about it really. Oh a wedding how exciting you must be rushed off you feet though hope you are finding time to relax as well!

pigley - I don't just think it is your surgery, mine loses prescriptions all the time too

myfirstbump - sorry you feel that way I'm not surprised though, I try not to patronise pregnant women or those with new babies as every baby is so different and just because X, Y and Z happened to you it might not happen to someone else. With pregnancy and babies everyone has their own opinions and aren't slow at sharing them, the best thing to do is just say "oh that's interesting" and file the good pieces of advice and ignore the rest. Relatives are the worst especially the "well in my day" Mums and MILs!

kateyjane - ouch you sound like you have got so much to cope with, just try and chalk off each day that's what I am doing, one more day done, one less until you meet your baby.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 05/03/2010 17:18

Ooh, the mention of Primark reminded me about a really good tip I was given the other day that I meant to share. Apparently they do really cheap packs of big granny pants that are ideal for after the birth - much more comfy than the disposable paper ones you can get, but cheap enough that you can happily just treat them as disposables and bin them after wearing.

I've just remembered a knicker-related question I had too actually. Someone told me the other day that you shouldn't wear a g-string when you're pregnant, which I thought sounded a bit odd. Has anyone else heard that? If it's true then I'm going to have to go knicker shopping, although it's probably too late now!

OP posts:
littleowls · 05/03/2010 17:42

Good Afternoon everyone!

Tomlin - Thanks for your comments - it really does help to hear how many people say they are inaccurate.

Pamelat - How was the hopi ear candle, I've often wondered about those?

Thanks for everyone's comments too! I do realise I am being irrational but sometimes it's hard not to worry, or think the worst! I have read threads re: growth scans and it does seem to be a concensus that they are often out. I really don't mind having a small baby, I just worry that it means something else or that I have done something to cause it! (I will shut up now! )

Cornish - Haven't had a letter from the health visitor, but will get to meet mine at the antenatal class in a few weeks. Not sure if they do a home visit before hand though.

My first bump - I know exactly what you mean about people telling you what it is going to be like. The one I hear alot is how little sleep I will be getting soon. This maybe the case but surely I already know this. It's almost like they enjoy telling you negative things about being a parent.

I might make to trip to Primark tomorrow, get some little stuff. I'm panicking about now having enough clothes for the hospital. The MW told me the other day that LO needs socks, vest, sleepsuit, booties, hat and mitts. So that is what I will get!

MDM - I've never heard the g-string thing. My SIL wears them still and she is due at the end of may. If they are comfortable then I don't see why you shouldn't wear them. I prefer bigger knicks anyway to cover my big bum, so I don't have this issue! x

Take care everyone and have a good weekend x

sweetkitty · 05/03/2010 17:57

Marquise - wold totally second the pants thing, Asda basics are good as well buy a size bigger than your normal and buy about 20 pairs then just throw away for the first few days along with the maternity pads (you will need LOADS of these as well). This is TMI but the actual maternity pads are better than something like Always as Always have a waterprrof layer thing and it can cause a rash (does with me), the maternity pads are huge and cushioned which is lovely when you are sore downstairs. Comfort over glamour!

Never hear the G-string thing either. Oh and although it's nice to have good new jammies for the hospital, always good to have a few spare pairs, after every birth I have always erm leaked straight through the bottoms and onto the bed oh and Boots do maternity sheet things which are good for underneath you for the first day for this purpose. I will be stocking up on those.

Oh and thought of something else I wasn't told, if your waters break they keep on leaking so you will need a sanitary towel on until it's time to get your knickers off really An old baggy t-shirt or short nightie is good to give birth in too.

itshappenedagain · 05/03/2010 18:50

evening all!

loving the knicker thing..i have packed 10 pairs of primark specials in my hospital bag already, did the same last time amd the MW i had said thank god as most "young mums" have G-strings because they dont think about having to wear massive maternity pads.
another tip i found from last time is not to buy maternity towels and just buy the night version of sanitary towels and like sweetkitty alread said, not the ones witht eh waterproof layer. wilkos do 2 packs for 98p in theres and ive been stocking up!
to all those suffering throughout pregnancy i do feel for you, i think about moaning then look at your posts and see i have i have it easy.

myfirstbump- my cousin is having her first baby and told me i was the first not to try and give my advice on it all, although she did ask me loads of questions! i agree its the most fantastic thing with your first, and that is all you want to talk about, especially if you have waited.

been for lunch today witha friend, and some random woman lifted my top to see my stomach it was a good job that i was in a calm mood or she may have got more than an angry stare. plus am still getting that face when you say i have 10 weeks left!

ive booked in 4 weeks before due date to have my bikini line, legs and underarms waxed, as well as my eyebrows and eyelahes tinted and shaped and a haircut. so feels better now i have that sorted. really should make and appointment inbetween for a colour, but am debating going back blonde ( am currently dark brown)

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 05/03/2010 19:04

Pigley - your GP surgery sounds awful!

CornishSAMum - glad MN is helping you I find it invaluable too as sometimes feel a bit isolated too. We live in Okehampton. I thought there was someone else on the thread from Devon but might be confused.

About the health visitor - I was reading a thread on here the other day that said health visitors are now visiting before the birth in order to get to know you as a new initiative. I didn't see mine until after DD was born and only seen them once since. Haven't heard from them yet but will see.

Cupcakefairy - hope your bruise feels better, I hate it when taking blood goes a bit wrong.

MDM - never heard the G-string thing, I guess they could get uncomfortable towards the end if you're not used to wearing them.

SK's right about the waters breaking too, I thought it would be one gush but it went on and on.

memorylapse · 05/03/2010 19:41

a quick post as chaos is descending round me

hospital slightly confused as LFTS were abnormal..but bile acids normal...Im suspicious that theyve actually pulled my old results as they seemed very quick.
anyway ctg was fine..have to go back on monday and they will re do the bloods..in the meantime Ive been given aqueaus cream mixed with menthol which feels like heaven!

Re maternity pads..they always advise not to get pads with absorbent top layers as they like to keep an eye on your loss...I second the vote for wilkos own cheap night time towels

I usually buy some cheap granny knickers too that you can just bin..the disposable ones are not very comfy

I always buy some new pyjamas for after the birth...it feels like bliss putting them on..oh and new slippers too!

I always pack a sleep, nursing bra for after the birth too as I find that for the first few days my boobs are massive and quite often wont squeeze into my nursing bra
Im chuckling at the thought of girls packing thongs for after the birth!

I think maybe they suggest you dont wear them during pregnancy because they might pre dispose you to thrush?

pamelat · 05/03/2010 20:50

Hi all

Am wondering if the g sting thing (which I hadnt heard of and have been wearing occassionally, only when out of big tummy pants ) is because of piles? you are more prone to piles pregnant.

Sorry for not answering people individually tonight, have ordered a chinese take away and its due any minute, priorities!

Have had hopi ear candle treatment and I liked it. It cost £20 for an hour, including consultation, and included a mini facial which I thought was very reasonable. It takes 10 minutes per ear and does not hurt at all. At the end you get to see what comes out of your ear and one of mine had been quite blocked. I wait to see whether it actually makes any difference though ... will give it a few days.

Enjoy your weekends ...

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 06/03/2010 07:57

Morning all!

SK - thanks for all the brilliant tips, will copy them into my little notebook that I've been keeping (did I mention before that I'm a bit of a list-maker!?). Dreading the thought of the mat pads for after the birth - have never been able to use san towels without feeling queasy! Although haven't tried them since I was about 13, so maybe I'll be ok this time, and somehow think that will be the least of my worries when recovering from birth and looking after a new baby!

happenedagain - love the idea of your pampering day! Was planning to do something similar in my two weeks between finishing work and due date (as long as LO doesn't arrive early!). Will get roots done, waxing, facial and probably a pedicure, so I have pretty toes to stare at when I'm in labour!

Am reassured by all your comments about my thong question - I think maybe someone was trying to wind me up!

Awake uncharacteristically early for a weekend! We're not usually up and about until gone 9, but I got woken up at 7 by the LO pulling some crazy dance moves in my tum, so thought I'd get up and have a peaceful cup of tea and check on here before DH wakes up and wants the computer to do his fantasy football (yawn).

We've got DH's parents turning up later today and they're staying until Wednesday! Not as bad as it sounds, as they're lovely, very low-maintenance (like DH, happy as long as we can offer them Sky Sports and a cup of tea!), and we're going to be at work Monday - Wednesday while they potter around London. But I do need to make the bed up for them and go to the supermarket before they arrive.

MFB and Littleowls - our LO will be first grandchild on both DH's side and my side of the family, so we don't have too many interfering relatives offering advice fortunately! Actually, it might not be the first on my side - it depends on who gives birth first out of me and my sister (due 3 days apart!).

Ah, can hear DH up and about, better put the kettle on and then tell him I've decided to take two of the chairs back to Ikea that we bought last week, and change them for a different colour. Sure he'll enjoy deconstructing them and trying to fit them back in the boxes!

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

pamelat · 06/03/2010 09:35

Hi all, can anyone explain to me why my 2 year old (normally good night sleeper) thought it was acceptable to wake at 2 last night crying, and then refuse to be settled and JUMP and SING around until 5am, shouting "MY WANTS TO PLAY DOWNSTAIRS".

As we arent used to her waking up anymore we tried too many different remedies, including our bed, milk, bed time story etc etc but she was simply WIDE AWAKE, after no nap during the day and a fairly active day.

At 5am, my DH took her for a drive and she fell to sleep, newborn days! only to wake an hour later full of energy again. She looks shattered and is grotty now but trying to keep her up until lunch time nap and get her back on track

Sorry wrong topic section really, just having a whinge!

memorylapse · 06/03/2010 11:23

morning all...DH'S birthday today so DD2 was up at half five all excited and wanting to give DH her pressie..an hour later she looked a bit peaky and started coughing..shes now got a temp of 38..yet she still insisted on going out to play in the garden!

my pregnancy sickness has come back..I feel really nauseasand smells are making me retch again..

Im 32 weeks on tuesday which means potentially Ive got 5/6 weeks left..I need to get my act together and apply for maternity allowance and buy some stuff for baby...Im working tomorrow and dont really feel up to it

30ish · 06/03/2010 14:16

Funny question - but has anyone noticed lumpy breasts as a side effect of their pregnancy? Found a lump on Weds and went to the doctor this morning. She's referred me to a breast unit but I won't know when until Monday. Very worried and have spent the morning blubbing, especially when I went to my mums! I can always compose myself - until I see my mum! I had hoped the doctor would tell me that it was hormonal or just fatty tissue but she didn't! Am resisting the urge to google so thought I would ask you guys. Could it just be something to do with pregnancy?

30ish · 06/03/2010 14:21

Sorry - the doctor did say that she's not too worried - whatever that means! But I blubbed because of my current hormonal state and because being referred wasn't what I was expecting!

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 06/03/2010 14:40

30ish - I have noticed that too, if it's any consolation. I had just assumed it was just another standard side-effect of pregnancy, maybe milk glands growing or something. Keep us posted on what the breast unit people say. Am sure your doc was just being ultra-cautious in making the referral.

OP posts:
30ish · 06/03/2010 18:14

MDM thanks - i'm sure everything will be fine!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 06/03/2010 19:39

Pamelat - sounds like a terrible night, it's awful when they pull stunts like that. I hope you get a better night tonight.

MDM - hope you have a nice time with your in-laws

30ish - hope you're OK, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about it, it sounds like something that's probably normal.

Memory - hope your DD2 is OK and happy birthday to your DH

pigleychez · 06/03/2010 20:13

Hello all,

Re Knickers- Another vote for cheapy cottons here, but make sure you get a couple of sizes bigger. I got one size bigger last time and they were abit snug what with the wacking maternity pads and wobbly belly

Cupcake- Yay on the move

Cornish- Not heard about the Midwife coming before the birth before, unless its a new thing like TCF said. Pointless here though as with DD I saw a different HV at each visit!

Pamlet- Hope you get a better night tonight. Its soo annoying when they are so wide awake at night isnt it. When DD has a night like that ( usually when teething) she does lay nicely, but lulls you into a false sense of security. So when you try and sneak out thinking shes gone off again, she sits bolt up right and screams.

30ish- Better to be safe than sorry but im sure its fine, Prob just milk glands etc. Try not to worry too much, although i know thats easier said than done!

Took a trip to Bluewater today (large undercover shopping centre)and it was heaving! Did vouchers for there to use but using them was a nightmare. Half the shops didnt take them and others had trouble with the cards on thier tills so took forever to get served, which of course meant DD was getting moody and kicking off, which is never fun!
Treated myself to some new shoes in the end and a maternity top.(why are they all so boring though!)

Had a funny bath with DD tonight. She washed my 'Baby Tummy' and kept prodding my 'boobbies'. Then whilst playing with her toys tries sticking Mr Octopus in places he shouldnt be!- DH said he was going up to check on Baby!

Been teaching DD today about being a Big Sister. She seemed to pick it up very well and spoke to baby saying " Abigail, Big Sister" -- Soo cute!

Hope everyones enjoying a good weekend

TomlinTowers · 06/03/2010 22:41

Hi All

Thanks v much for all your advice on the group strep B test. CornishSAMum - I had forgotten all about the red book so looked up the birth details bit last night, and found out that DS1 was screened for group strep B but apparently there was no growth, so we must be clear. Still going to ask for a test at my next MW appointment though, just to put my mind at rest.

Lumpy boobs - I think I have read something that said they are quite common in late pregnancy because of all the prep they have to do for the milk to come in, but I guess it is best to get these things checked out. Best of luck 30ish, hope you get the referral soon so you can put your mind at rest.

MDM - at your 9am lie-ins, haven't had one of those since 2007 when DS1 arrived!

Have just spent a very satisfying 2 hours going through all old bank statements, wage slips etc and getting all our paperwork in order. Going to clear out the nursery tomorrow, and then my Dad is coming over on Thursday to decorate it (he loves decorating and we hate it!). Dh also going to get down crib, blankets, clothes etc from loft so can start washing everything through. Hopefully will start to feel a little bit more organised soon!

Also had a blissful three hours in town this morning on my own - had pedicure, wax [defuzzers, I sympathise!) and then went to hairdressers and had hair cut short! Hormonal moment, but fortunately DH loves it and it's growing on me. Just get a shock every time I catch my reflection in the mirror!

Oh, and some good news - we got an allotment today! Going to see it tomorrow afternoon, just hoping it's not covered in weeds!
