Hi All, thanks for feedback re dopplers. Sounds like a good thing to have to help put mind at ease.

So sorry to hear of grandparents passing away. My grandfather is in hospital at the moment and things are not looking good either. Such a stressful time. Thoughts are with you.

Glad to hear others scans are going well.

memorylapse · 10/11/2009 18:46

Lizzie..Ive just got to resist the urge to listen every day now! I had to press quite hard as im rather well padded..I dont think I would have picked it up otherwise

mollybob · 10/11/2009 20:12

Nagging hat on - dopplers are fun but there was a v sad story in the news about a woman in later pregnancy who had a reduction in baby movements and because she used her doppler and heard a heart beat she didn't go to her midwife for two days by which time her baby was dead. Very scary. That said I use the doppler at work occasionally as at this stage when we can't feel movements it's lovely to know all is well.

Nagging hat off.

memorylapse · 10/11/2009 20:59

I think she picked up her own heartbeat or something didnt she?

I think dopplers are only really useful at this stage when you cant really feel movements, once baby is viable..I wouldnt bother with a doppler because if anything was wrong..it would require a scan or CTG and at least if the baby was distressed they could potentially do something about it.

Carikube · 10/11/2009 21:00

Thanks for the nag mollybob - not that I want to be paranoid but I don't use mine that often as I'm sure I heard somewhere that too much use can be harmful to the little one.

I am also sure that I heard this at some reliable source that probably also says you can't get pg if you have sex standing up so I wouldn't pay any attention, but has anyone else ever heard this?

memorylapse · 10/11/2009 21:03

its not a good idea to use them too much...that said...when I was an in patient with ds1 for a week when 21 weeks, they came round every day and listened in with the doppler

mollybob · 10/11/2009 21:20

can't see them doing any real harm to be honest but they can cause worry if you can't find the heart beat and also false reassurance if you hear your own. Normally easy enough to tell the difference but if you're anxious your heart rate can go up to >100 and then it could be mistaken for baby's. Which is probably what happened with this poor woman - although kicks will stop sometimes a day or two before baby dies and heart rate can continue but a CTG and scan would show a stressed baby who needs delivered.

But dopplers are fun at the stage we're at before the kicking starts. And then there's all the theory about faster rate=girl and slower=boy. Must check mine again tomorrow...

schipo · 10/11/2009 22:01

How is everyone's bump doing?

I'm 13 weeks and 3 days today, and since the weekend I've been alarmed at the size of mine. There's definitely a new roundness there and as a first timer i was expecting it would take a bit longer, or at least not appear so suddenly. I've put on about 7 pounds in the last three months though so I guess a some of it will be just pie. Thank god anyway that jeans have such low rises these days.

Also, is everyone going to do NCT classes? Not sure what's involved really but someone told me to register early because they get booked up quickly round here and it looks like I was just in time. Are they worthwhile?

mollybob · 10/11/2009 22:55

I'm such a heifer that the bump at 12+2 is well hidden under mounds but I have totally changed shape - my boobs are vast and I've been so sick I've lost about a stone. But I am ravenous at the moment so won't be long before that goes back on again.

This is my third so I won't bother with classes but a good way to meet people - but not everyone ends up life long friends with their NCT group. See it as a chance for some fun and opportunity to learn a bit.

I actually found parenting classes with DS was 3 and DD was 6 months to be much more useful than my antenatal class.

MoggMum · 10/11/2009 23:49

I've put on a few pounds too and have a visible bump at 13+3 which seems to get bigger throughout the day (as I eat more!). I was quite slight to start with though so any change is noticeable. It's great to finally have boobs without having to resort to surgery!

Suppose I ought to do NCT classes, this being my first, but can't imagine DH wanting to come along. Might take my Sister instead!

MoggMum · 10/11/2009 23:59

Yikes - just noticed the time on my last post! I should be in bed already as have early meeting tomorrow. Can't believe I don't feel tired though - does this mean my energy levels are finally returning?! I thought my MS was going until this morning when my breakfast made a rapid reappearance when I cleaned my teeth - yuk

Finally went public at work today (had to really as was late in again due to vomitus maximus). Their reaction was great - shocked but delighted and I felt quite emotional

TomlinTowers · 11/11/2009 00:09

Hi All

This is definitely last thing to do before I go to bed!!

Have put scan photos on profile. Second pic quite scarily alien-like!!

Told all work mates today, and they held whip round and bought cake to celebrate which was lovely. Have been very lucky with all the positive reactions. Had first discussion with manager about mat leave, and whether I was coming back (which I am) and she was so relieved she agreed to all my conditions (2 days to start with, building up to 4 days, and change of hours so will work 8.30 - 4 rather than 9 - 5). Have been v v organised in planning all this already, and will no doubt change my mind 100 times before it actually all becomes a reality!

Glad to hear news of more positive scans!

So sorry to all those whose are being affected by grandparents illness.

Right, off to bed with me!

Carikube · 11/11/2009 08:53

I still meet my NCT class (from when I had dd) on a weekly basis and I found the support network of having others going through exactly the same stage as me invaluable. DH wasn't overly convinced by the thought of the classes - when he found out at the end of the first class that there were still another 4 to go, he was traumatised but he said that he did learn the odd thing whilst he was there.

I actually told my NCT lot yesterday that I am expecting number 2 and they were all rather taken aback though not surprised that I'm the first to take the plunge again...

Hobnobfanatic · 11/11/2009 10:22

Not sure if I'll do the NCT route - the friends I made last time were mainly from the local mother and baby/toddler groups, rather than NCT, which was quite some way from me.

Sickness easing a bit - still sick first thing, but then not bad until the late afternoon. Then, right through to bedtime, I feel really nauseous. Why?! I figured it could be linked to tiredness, but I'm usually having a nap after lunch each day!

sweetkitty · 11/11/2009 10:48

15 weeks today for me (well going by scan dates) sickness is easing, SPD kicking in , weighed myself on the Wii Fit last night have put on 6lbs oh well there's a lot more where that came from, no point in worrying about it, I am fairly lucky in that the weight drops off very quickly after the baby is born. Probably got more of a bump than I did last time too, think I was about 20 odd weeks before I gave in and dug out the maternity trousers, funny how first pregnancy you cannot wait to wear maternity clothes, subsequent ones, you are shoe horning yourself into your normal clothes for as long as you can.

Glad to hear more scans are going well, I have a friend who had one yesterday she is 8 weeks and haven't heard from her, worried now have sent her a little e-mail but don't want to do anymore than that.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 11/11/2009 11:41

I have a definite bump now as well (although also a big belly!). Sickness has definitely eased, hurrah! Starting to eat normal food again which is great (DH is so relieved, I think he got sick of random meals).

Sorry to all others going through problems with grandparents, it's very sad All mine died when I was a toddler so I don't know what it's like really, but DH is very upset.

TomlinTowers - your colleagues sound lovely

Sweetkitty - hope your friend is OK.

I didn't do NCT classes but I wish I had - after DD's birth I didn't really know anyone but at all the groups I went to everyone else knew each other so I felt quite left out and ended up not going back to most of them. It was quite isolating for a while. I don't think I'd do them this time simply because I know people now so it's less of a problem.

I've just finished making suet-free mincemeat for Christmas so the house smells lovely. Tastes yummy and fruity too!

AnAngelWithin · 11/11/2009 12:07

morning all....or afternoon....i think.... i got home from school run and fell asleep!!! Good job DH text me otherwise I would've been late for picking up dd from nursery!! I feel sick more in the evening now

I am getting myself in a right stress about my scan on friday. Especially as DH can't come with me

suey2 · 11/11/2009 12:11

morning all
scan today eek!

for those with ill GP: mine all died before i was 11.

Tomlin- your colleagues sound ace!

NCT: i would recommend it. I didn't have a lot in common with my lot, but in that first 6 months, they were invaluabe: i mean, who else is interested in an hour long conversation about poo? I would take their message with a pinch of salt, though. I ahve the feeling that all this talk of birth plans and water births etc make some women feel a failure and even more disempowered when, due to circumstances beyond their control, the birth plan is completely disregarded.

memorylapse · 11/11/2009 12:16

Tomlin..love the scan pics

Sweetkitty...sorry to hear SPD is kicking in..could you enquire about a physio referal?
mine usually starts about 20 weeks.

I still weigh less than I did when preg..but then I lost loads through sickness..have a very definate bump now!
Im not amused though..MW has just phoned and U have Gestational Diabetes..got to do my blood sugars every day and will no longer be under my existing consultant but will see a diabetic consultant at Glan Clwyd..

cafuffle · 11/11/2009 15:37

memorylapse · 11/11/2009 16:19

welcome cafuffle

Well Im now armed with a BM machine..sharps box etc, have to chek my blood sugars 4 times a day..see the dietician..anything sugary is out and when I see the specialist next week they will decide if it can be diet controlled or insulin controlled.. I will be monitored closely and will not be allowed to go to term.

lizzie9442 · 11/11/2009 16:23

memorylapse - I feel for you having to do all that every day. What made them test for it? Is it the one you can only get when pregnant or does it mean you will have it even after the baby is born? I can't believe you can't have anything sugary, that has got to be hard. Poor you xxxx

Carikube · 11/11/2009 16:28

suey2 - I came out of my NCT classes feeling all earth-motherish about how I was going to do it all naturally : pah! One ambulance transfer later and forceps delivery in theatre with a spinal block, I didn't really care what they gave me as long as it was all over.

Out of the 7 of us that attended, only 1 had a labour without some sort of intervention or emergency postnatal treatment...

memorylapse · 11/11/2009 16:50

lizzie..they checked because my last 2 appts Ive had glucose in my wee..I have a family history too, am overweight, hypothyroid etc..Its classed as Gestational so should clear after wards..but there is a slight risk that I will always be diabetic...the PITA is checking the blood sugars..just been showing the kids my BM machine..they think its fab watching me draw blood

Sarahlou8 · 11/11/2009 17:55

Memorylapse, I innocently told my midwife that my Mum has late onset diabetes (only diagnosed about 12 months ago)and at the hospital last week they said I've got to go for a glucose tolerance test at 24 weeks as I've set off one of their triggers by answering that question.
I don't know if I should be avoiding sugar as a precaution, do you have any symptoms if you develop this?
Just reading about everyone's bumps, mine has sprung out of nowhere and seems to get bigger by the end of the day!
14+3 today.
Everything feels a bit surreal again, my sickness came to an abrupt end last week and I feel fine. I think I've felt a couple of flutterings but not sure,my last scan was an early 9 week one so didn't have the 12 week dating scan so I'm now worrying a bit along the lines of 'am I still pregnant' which sounds really daft.
Can't wait to feel proper movements.
It's nice to read about all your scans by the way!
