Thanks iggypiggy and skihorse - that's really helpful info. I have my first MW appointment on Friday so will quiz her further then but think I'll probably go for the private early scan too for peace of mind.

I'm really confused about the swine flu debate too. I've read that doctors in the US, France and Ireland are advising against the type of vaccine routinely used here for pregnant women (Pandremix). Pregnant women in those countries are given a different vaccine which is more expensive but considered to be safer in pregnancy. I mentioned this to my doctor and he told me that it was my decision and he fully understood my concerns but that NHS policy was to advise pregnant women to get the available vaccine. Didn't sound to me like he was wholly convinced .

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 14:28

sorry everyone, I'm all over this thread today (off work with poorly child) but there's a good Q&A summary about swine flu and the vaccine for pregnant women here:

timesonline.typepad.com/science/2009/11/swine-flu-the-facts-about-pregnancy-and-vaccination.html

From what I understand, the main reason Pandremix is being offered here is that it is a single-dose vaccine which confers immediate protection. The other vaccine, Celvapan, has to be given in doses three weeks apart, which means you're theoretically vulnerable in the intervening period. Both vaccines have been licenced by the European Medicines Agency, as the article says. The main difference seems to be that Pandremix contains an adjuvant - a sort of booster derived from fish oil that seems to have caused most of the controversy. The WHO reviewed the safety of adjuvants in June and found "no significant safety concerns".

Vaccines aren't ever tested on pregnant women, as the article says, for obvious ethical reasons. So it's a worry - there's a degree of the unknown, but I'm reassured that lots of pregnant women receive seasonal flu vaccines (containing adjuvants) every year, with no ill-effects.

Mouseybrown · 16/11/2009 14:29

Afternoon all,

Just checking in, hi and congrats to all the new joiners!

The antibiotics saw off the toothache without any further intervention (thank goodness), so I think I got off lightly there.

Have booking in appointment with midwife on friday, and am still hugely in denial about the whole thing. Just writing 'midwife' has given me a bit of a turn!

Lots of time to get used to the idea- and thats what I'm going to keep telling myself!

Big hugs all round

Spirael · 16/11/2009 14:42

Afternoon all. Wow, things got busy over the weekend! Welcome and congratulations to all the new people.

I've talked to DH about early scans and we're pretty much decided that if the NHS won't offer me one then we'll shell out to get a private scan a week or two before Christmas, at 8 weeks along. Same as other people have said, it'll help put our minds at ease so we can be a bit more confident about letting more people know over the Christmas period that we're expecting. The place I was looking at is £85 and has some good reviews.

I'm probably not going to get the Swine Flu vaccine, myself. I have no known underlying conditions and I'm generally pretty fit and healthy, so I'm confident in my body's abilities to deal with the flu, if it happens. I'm also not working in an environment where I'm likely to pick it up that easily, so I might get away with not having it at all!

Still only really got the symptoms of tiredness and sore breasts here. I was feeling a touch more confident making it past the weekend, as it was that point I MC'd last time. Though I'm wary today about a bit of darker discharge that I'm hoping is just gunky for no particular reason and nothing at all to worry about. Not on panic stations yet, after all it's not pink or red and we're talking tiny-tiny traces of tan/brown, but after MCing last time it's still enough to put me on edge.

NorkyButNice · 16/11/2009 14:45

Hello everyone!

Not much to report here - nausea/vomiting has kicked in big time (can't believe last week I was complaining about having no symptoms!). Am hoping it doesn't get any worse than this over the next few weeks.

I think I'll be having the swine flu jab - I'd rather be protected than risk me and baby getting ill.

I've got my booking in appt on 9th Dec, then I've got a private scan on the 10th.

DeeLite · 16/11/2009 14:57

I know what you mean, Norky. I was feeling really left out last week when everyone was complaining about MS. I'm now so nauseous that I can barely function. Oh well, only another five or six weeks of feeling really crap.

Can I be really nosey and ask about your private scan, Norky? Is it a dating scan or a nuchal translucency scan? If the latter, can I ask where you're having it done and how much it costs?

Sorry, it's my first time and I'm a bit clueless. I haven't told anyone other than DH yet so have noone to discuss all these things with other than all you lovely people.

Champagneforlunch · 16/11/2009 15:32

Still had hardly any symptoms although did feel sick after drinking a cup of coffe yesterday, so no more gingerbread lattes this year, this will be cause more problems with friends than the fact I'm not drinking. Got a night out planned for tomorrow but thankfully just me and dh, was going to invite our friends but changed my mind strangley. Had to laugh at my friend today telling about someone she knows who is going to have a 14 month age gap and saying how hard it will be for her all the while thinking I'm only going to have thirteen months between Dd2 and this one.
Don't know if i'd pay for an early scan but I've had them on the nhs for every pregnancy so never had to think about it, i would pay for the 20 week scan if i didn't get that one though.

darydork · 16/11/2009 17:16

gibbon i did some looking up online 2day about Alan Carr's book & it says that in order for it to work you HAVE to be still smoking while reading it and the idea is that by the end of the book you will have stopped.. Do you agree with this? Seen as ive alrady quit (day 6) will it still be of benefit to me to read it?

tishtosh how are you doing today, did you go to the doc? Ive had the absolute worst day 2day, was on the brink of lighting up so many times, i was atempting since yest to go it alone but i was in a rite state so put a patch back on and semi-calm has been restored

TishTosh21 · 16/11/2009 17:33

Hi darydork no i havent been to the docs yet, still think its too early! I just keep thinking they will turn me away as they wouldnt be able to tell me anything.

I havent had a ciggie at all today and its actually not been too bad, although now im home and relaxing i really really feel like having one. It will be worse when DP comes home as he'll be smoking (outside i hasten to add!)
Im not using any NPT i want to go it alone as i managed for 4 days last month and i think its the initial first few days which are the worst so if i can go without anything for at least 3 or 4 days ill be well on my way.

Dont give up we can do it together, i was tempted earlier at work but i just thought its not going to achieve anything and ill just have to start over again tomorrow.

Im not going to be a fat waddling pregnant smoker!

mousemole · 16/11/2009 17:37

OMG
Just discovered the best thing in the world for sickess -these amazing yorkshire tea ginger biscuits. They were on special offer in Morrisons. SOOooooooo good

www.yorkshireteacakesandbiscuits.co.uk/Biscuits.aspx

darydork · 16/11/2009 17:47

Well done tishtosh on not having one 2day thats great, hope the next few days go as smoothly for you, you sound like your ready to tackle it now.. your rite re going it on your own, i know i should be too thats why i stopped the patches yest, but i know i would have caved in today if i hadnt put one back on my plan is to go on to the reduced mg ones tomorrow and hopefully after a week of them il go it alone.. im a stay at home mammy & its times like this i wish i was out working and distracted during the day!!
Everywhere i looked today up town or at the schools there was someone lighting up or putting out a fag and have to admit part of me was really proud of myself but the other part of me wanted to grab it out of their hand and smoke it, how sad, these last few days have really made me realise how much control them dam sticks have over my life, im even dreaming about them!!

darydork · 16/11/2009 17:53

Hi ladies,

When does MS tend to kick in if its going to? Im 4+4 and no sign of it yet, i dont really want it TBH but ive no other syptoms really apart from tender boobs, it would be a comfort to even feel a little bit quesy

TishTosh21 · 16/11/2009 17:57

Im still gagging for a ciggie though i just really want to go it alone it will make me feel like ive really achieved it.

Im 5+5 and only have slightly tender boobs and no other symptoms at all.

I can see how staying at home would make it worse, i dont think id be able to go it alone if i stayed at home as i smoke so much more when im at home.

Dont let the white sticks control you!

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 18:09

I know darydork, I feel the same disquiet about lack of symptoms. I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and not really feeling nauseous either. Some people just don't. I didn't in my last pregnancy.

I've been thinking about an early viability scan. Does anyone know what my chances are of being referred to the EPU for a scan just because I'm worried? I've no previous history and haven't been bleeding so the GP might just tell me to jeff off I guess.

darydork · 16/11/2009 18:11

Oh i dont intend to let them beat me..

have to go to a comittee meeting 2nite for my dd's cammogue team, cud do without it TBH, comitted to it before i found out i was preg.

Anyway enjoy your eve, hope you dont get too many cravings

TishTosh21 · 16/11/2009 19:29

Have a good eve darydork, try and stay awake!

I am only 5+5 and i get so so bloated after i eat a meal, im talking huge i look 5 months preg. Is that a symptom?!?!

Firerise · 16/11/2009 20:24

Still don't know what is happening.

I had more blood taken on Sunday and the nurse advised that if the levels were ok they would book me in for another scan in 10 days but dr called today to say they had risen again but only to 248 and that they are very concerned that it is ectopic so want me to get another scan on Wednesday.

I will be 6 weeks on Thursday so levels should be a lot higher.

Gone from feeling increasingly positive to worried sick again.

Sorry to be going on about my worries I just don't know what to do.

TishTosh21 · 16/11/2009 20:27

im sorry firerise i dont really have any pearls of wisdom when it comes to things like this but just to let you know we are here to listen and offer a virtual cuppa!

Keep us informed on how things go for you, will be wishing the best for you

lifeistooshort · 16/11/2009 20:34

wintermadness would you consider hypnobirthing this time round. With DD I had a difficult long birth and possibly a little PND so with DS I wanted to try something different. Hypnobirthing worked a treat and I had a (resonably) quick and easy birth without any pain relief (and I am a total wimp) and no PND. Might be worth a shot?

Apologies to all in advance...I didn't think I would start on the hypnobirthing proselitism that early on

winnie do you think you DC might have had GBS?

I am in two minds about the swine flu vaccine too but on balance I probably will have it especially since I am worried of ending up with a prem baby. It is scary though making the decision and feeling like a guinea pig.

Apart from that not many symptoms here apart from the cramp and the back ache and more cramps!

PS oh and welcome to all the newbies. It is hard to catch up with everyone!

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 20:35

You're not going on at all, firerise, please keep posting if it helps at all. I really hope they're wrong and that the scan shows everything is OK.

Winnie78 · 16/11/2009 20:56

Hi lifeistooshort... did you mean me in your earlier post? I'm a little confused !

Best wishes for your scan on Wednesday Firerise.
