Will people stop worrying about the food already? Seriously, it's fine, really. I mean, avoiding 6-day-old chicken, worming your dog or cat and not eating mushrooms you pick yourself (unless you're a pick your own mushrooms expert) is a good idea, but having an M&S brie sarnie is really not a problem.

I'm off for a snack of peanuts, evil mum I am

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 06:36

British eggs (carrying the lion stamp) come from salmonella-vaccinated hens, berberis, so the risk of getting salmonella from a runny one is v. v. small. Also, carrots, I get that you're being facetious, but the department of health has changed their previous advice on peanuts - they're now thought to be fine in pregnancy (unless you're allergic to them yourself of course) so rather than being evil you're actually sensibly following government advice. Rock and roll!

Morning everyone
Just been catching up on all the chat from the weekend. I've been obsessing a bit too much lately so decided to take a few days off from the MN forums and Google searches! .

Welcome to all of the new BFPs and good luck to everyone trying to give up smoking!

Firerise - glad to see things were moving in the right direction for you. Hope your latest tests produce more good news for you!

I'm joining a new GP practice today; got an appointment with the practice nurse this morning. I'm also hoping to return to the gym today. I was so exhausted last week that I only went once and I think I feel worse for that. I read somewhere that a trip to the gym can help combat fatigue in early pregnancy. I'm willing to give it a try...after sleeping for about 70% of the weekend!!!

Anyone else hauling @ss to the gym this week?

skihorse · 16/11/2009 07:53

hi everyone

I got my BFP Saturday.

July 24th - skihorse, The Netherlands, #1

I too recommend the Allen Carr book although I'll admit I've smoked more than ever whilst TTC - probably some reverse-psychology punishing my body thing. However, I had my last one midday saturday and honestly it's a piece of piss - Allen will tell you why. But the addiction is gone within 2-3 days, just another 3 hours and I'll have cracked it.

I can't promise I won't ever smoke again... but I'm confident I won't do it again before the end of July 2010.

skihorse · 16/11/2009 08:07

Doh, just tried a different EDD calculator and it now says July 21st. Also, I'm 35.

iggypiggy · 16/11/2009 09:24

Hi ski

I can't get calculators to agree - I am 19th, 20th or 21st depending on the place I use...

re: smoking - I know someone who has immediate and long lasting success with hypnosis - not cheap tho...

CurlyCasper · 16/11/2009 09:33

dates 21st 22nd 23rd for me... Let's just see!

Page62 · 16/11/2009 11:03

violetbubbles i will be aiming to swim 2-3x a week -- though so hard to do in nov as it is an absolute hell month for me at work. will try and go tomorrow (left swimsuit at home today - duh).
starting to feel absolutely wiped out -- though having hosted a 6 yr old's party last weekend (with 21 5-6 year olds) and a testosterone filled 3.5 yr old DS running around the house normally wipes me out, with or without the little bean!
congratulations on new joiners -- lots of hand holding!

I POAS this am just wanted to see CB digital and it said 3+ weeks (it said 1-2 weeks when i first tested). hopefully, means going in right direction. First Dr appt on Dec 7 -- seems ages away!

roobydoo2 · 16/11/2009 11:15

Hello
Can I join too? Due (I think) 4th July, am 35, in Edinburgh and is 1st time. Not having many syptoms so slightly worried (though not really wish for ms..) Anyone wondering about paying for private nuchal transluceny scan as they don't seem to do it here or am I just wasting time and money worrying too much about the risks at 35??

skihorse · 16/11/2009 11:34

rooby I suppose it depends on what you feel your decision might be if the scan indicated something awry.

roobydoo2 · 16/11/2009 12:17

skihorse - mmm not quite sure what my thoughts are if something was awry, hard to admit but not sure if would cope with looking after downs child or not...

berberis · 16/11/2009 13:03

I forgot to say am 35 and in se london

iggypiggy · 16/11/2009 13:09

berberis - I am 33 and in SE london too.

DeeLite · 16/11/2009 13:10

Hi Rooby and welcome

I'm 35 and it's my first too. I don't think I'd cope too well either and am making enquiries about getting a private scan.

It looks like the earliest you can have it done is 11.2 weeks which is a bummer for me as I want to tell everyone at Christmas but 11.2 weeks falls on Christmas Eve and I won't be able to get an appointment then. It seems to cost about £100 - £150 and I think it's money well-spent for early peace of mind. Not just for chromosonal problems but also to check baby is alive and well.

Good luck with your decision.

crabby · 16/11/2009 13:10

I'm throwing my hat into the ring too as another newbie! I'm 34, due no 2 on July 4th.

Rooby I paid for a private scan last time and din't regret it for a second. I am not sure what we would have done if there had been a problem but I am a big believer in forarmed is forwarned.

Luckily they have started doing NT scans around us so no choice to be made this time. But the advantage of a scan in the evening at a time convienent to us with consultant spending lots of time doing detailed images was very nice last time. Almost worth the money again .

The thing that is getting me at the moment is the old swine flu vaccine debate. I work in the frontline NHS and would certainly have it, it is just the first trimester is such a scary time.... Hmmmm...

mousemole · 16/11/2009 13:16

rooby I am in Edinburgh too and am paying to go to Healthcare Now on Stafford St

www.healthcarenow.co.uk/

iggypiggy · 16/11/2009 13:16

deelite you can have a scan for re-assurance/ viability at 7 weeks. Then the NHS one is at 12 weeks I think. Last time I had one at 7 + 3 (but had MC after that) - am going to wait until 8 weeks this time - if I make it that far..

skihorse · 16/11/2009 13:22

DeeLite On my midwife's site it says they can test for Downs from weeks 9-14 which is a fair-sized window. I've seen elsewhere that a basic scan can be as low as 65 quid.

I(we) have decided that we will keep a child with Downs, so if my initial results don't look good we won't be getting more invasive tests because it won't change the outcome.

I too am very much undecided about the swine-flu jab... it seems to me the people dying from SF are very "sickly" people anyway.

CurlyCasper · 16/11/2009 13:35

The private early scan I'm going for costs £75 (they do them from 7 weeks) I've told DH I'd rather pay for that than have Christmas and birthday presents, no matter what the outcome. It is supposed to confirm baby's viablity. I know things can still go wrong after that, but I want to be comfortable telling people at Christman (10 weeks).

darydork · 16/11/2009 13:37

Hi ladies, WELCOME

Im also in 2 minds about the swine flu jab, i rang my GP's office earlier and was told by receptionist i didnt have to have until between weeks 15 & 19, is that the time frame in the uk? im in ireland but dont think its any different whereever you are is it??

Im also 35 and this will be my #4 for me, they dont scan you until 18weeks here which is very late so think il be getting a earlier private scan, i didnt do that on my other 3 but im a lot more anxious this time...

Wonderstuff · 16/11/2009 13:38

Hi all welcome new people. Can't believe how many of us there are now.

I am feeling very tired today, but my dd woke me up at 3.30am to tell me she was snotty, so no wonder. Also having problems getting to sleep at the mo, so wound up with it all. Any tips on how to chillax? Not feeling too sick - which is worrying me, but definitly feeling a bit odd. Wish I could just relax.

Also don't know whether to tell my mum atm. She works with me, and I don't know if I want her to know yet, but I don't want to feel I'm keeping stuff from her, and obv. if the worse does happens I will want her to know.. I don't want to put myself in a difficult position at work.

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 13:44

I'll be having the swine flu jab. I looked at as much guidance as I could find and there doesn't seem to be any clear evidence of risk to the foetus from the vaccine, whereas there's lots of evidence about the risk to both me and the foetus if I get swine flu.

One statistic that keeps coming up is that pregnant women are ten times more likely to end up in intensive care with complications from swine flu (like pneumonia and sudden respiratory failure). My mum, a respiratory nurse practitioner, reckons that a surprisingly high proportion of the seriously ill people she's seen with SF have been young adults and a good number of those were pregnant women.

Also, my little daughter is a bit wheezy (she might be asthmatic, too soon to tell, but she is on inhalers) and ended up in hospital with the last bad cold she had. I don't want to risk her health either if I can avoid it.

It's one of those tricky things, isn't it? You've got to weigh up the costs and benefits and make your own judgement.

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 13:46

argh, Wonderstuff, tricky one! Do you think she would be able to keep it to herself if you did tell her?

Wonderstuff · 16/11/2009 13:51

She would, but I'm not convinced she would be all that supportive, last time I told her early she told me she 'wasn't going to get her hopes up' no congratulations and I also worry that some training ops are coming up, that I want to take advantage of but I worry she would feel that was a bit cheeky, she is senior to me and could sideline me for these things. She is lovely, but worries about everything. I think, after 'thinking about it' I won't unless I get v. ill.

lazyemma · 16/11/2009 13:58

I reckon that does sound like the right decision under the circs, especially if she isn't good at being supportive. My mum's reaction when I told her about my first pregnancy was equally underwhelming - she said, and I'm not joking, "Oh Emma! What are you gong to do?!" whilst my dad looked on, nonplussed. You'd have thought I was still at school, not 28 and married. I've got to tell her early this time because I promised her I would and she'd be hurt otherwise, but I'm not looking forward to it.

I hope your mum steps up to the plate with some proper congratulations this time around.
