Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bethoo · 12/11/2009 09:39

morning ladies, i am glad the discussion yesterday put a smile on a few faces and you never know what you may experiment with once babies are born!!
anyway welcome to our late newbie, missmarjoribanks and better late than never. i actually prefer these threads to the others as we all become acquainted with each other. feel free to ask anything, there are also other first timers here and old timers but each pregnancy is different.
well another day at work doing sweet fa, long story but basically been taken over by civilian contractor who have deifferent ways of dealing with things whcih menas my position has become virtually obsolete due to fixing telecoms in different areas to which i hold no records! so i spend my whole time catching up on news and mumsnet and the occasional game of scrabble! annoying as still awaiting redundancy date which i am depending on so i can move out of my current house to move in wiht dp! but that is anohter story!
now i am waffling!!!

Partyofsixsoontobeseven · 12/11/2009 09:43

Morning all

CTOFN - hope all is well, I had a few days of worry but aparently all normal now. GP said levels can fluctuate due to your body working overtime to keep baby healthy.

I do apologise about me and bethoo lowering the tone - what with position etc, but this thread made me laugh so much yesterday that i don't think it will do us any harm.

Although my poor dh might take offence at our sex life or lack of being commented about on MN.

Anyhow going out on visits, so will check back in later.

Welcome missmarjoribanks I'm not to far away in north manchester.

shinybaubles · 12/11/2009 10:04

Hi everyone, welcome Missmarjoribanks.
Am going to try and do something useful today like packing hospital bag, I am feeling so tired today I think as I get closer to due date there will be very few days when I am full of beans. I know it's early but just want to know it's done.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 12/11/2009 10:48

Hey Shiny - I started my bags on Tuesday afternoon once I got confirmation on the dates . Only got so far and realised that I needed to wash my dressing gown and needed to buy a few bits. So that all in process, will probably complete the packing over the next week.

I have to pack bottles and formula too as really don't think I'm going to breastfeed this time due to breast reduction op a few years ago. In fact, it was the one thing that the Dr at the time told me I wouldn't be able to do. Didn't bother me in the least as I had no intention of getting pg again !

No itching overnight. Purposefully didn't take any Gaviscon last night and relied on Rennies instead. But also had a thought that during the evening when this happened, I had about half a can of Carling lager (as a shandy) and when I had my anaph. shock back in March, that was preceded by me drinking a whole can (ooooh) of Carling lager. Thing is, we thought that perhaps the can had been contaminated with some seafood in the fridge belonging to DH! Now I'm wondering if there is something in the making of Carling (as opposed to any other lager) that doesn't agree with me...

Ha - probably the BEST allergic reaction in the world..... (sorry, v lame)....

So - have an ante-natal class at 12:30 and will leave early to pop into the MDU and check on results, but am certainly not waiting around for hours. I guess if something comes up, they can call me.

Have a couple of old work friends coming over tonight and staying. They are MASSIVE drinkers and wondering how I will cope. Thing is, when you're drinking with them, it never seems so bad does it - but when you're sober?! Anyway, dinner all prepared in the slow cooker so can now get on with the chores of the day.

I will check in tomorrow! Have a good day all.

FlightofFancy · 12/11/2009 11:59

Thanks for advice on movement guys - typically, having posted that I had a day yesterday of what must have been samba dancing then a quiet one today (probably exhausted!). I'm all bump out front as well, which I'm sure makes a difference to the space available to stretch out!

shinybaubles · 12/11/2009 12:02

I have make up on my list too bethoo although this time I am going to insist on black and white photos.

somewhathorrified · 12/11/2009 12:17

Hi all

I have to admit I've started to get my homebirth box together, more to do with the fact that I really don't want to have to think about it at xmas. One question, where do you get maternity pads from? I've been all over the chemists and supermarkets locally and either they're sold out or don't sell them. Is there another product that sell them under another name...I don't know, like always extra fat or something? Tbh I hate the concept of using pads of any sort, not touched the things since my first period so have never really looked at what's available and what they do, I feel so out of my depth iykwim.

Did someone on here mention Battlestar Galactica the other week, can't remember if it was here or somewhere else?

And has anyone started on the perenium massage thing? and if so how the hell do you reach around comfortably...or are my arms unreasonably short?

shinybaubles · 12/11/2009 12:22

Got maternity pads from mothercare and I think Boots also do them, was told last time they do have to be maternity pads because they are made from different materials - basically they check the pads to check for infections and amount of blood loss and it doesn't work well on ordinary ones...if I remember correctly .

Fraochsmum · 12/11/2009 12:28

Bllody hell, you guys are so organised!! I am leaving first thing tomorrow for Glasgow (for big day on Saturday) and haven't even packed one thing! Actually, just remembered that I have to pick up the dress...better go...
x

bethoo · 12/11/2009 12:46

somewhathorrified that was me mentioning Battlestar! are you a fan? thought i was the only female who watched it! had me gripped til the end and what an ending!!
anyway i also mentioned about hte perenial massage thing and apparantl yaccording to my mw it hurts to do and not that effective as i thought it was the skin they massage to loosen it up as it hurts when baby crowns (sorry all those first timers!!!) and basically it is to stretch the muscle inside the vagina so it is done internally! so midwife said no use really! i may just pour olice oil all over me down there in the hope the baby may gracefully glide out of me!!

in that case this is also my 3rd so maybe i will be joining you with the continence pads? i have considered wearing adult nappies at bedtime as spend more time in the loo than sleeping which is heartbreaking as not slept for more than an hour each time so far!

Partyofsixsoontobeseven · 12/11/2009 13:51

Hi all

How on earth do we go from being all sex and rudeness to incontinence.

I'm on baby number 5 and although I will admit to a little leakage when coughing sneezing etc. on the whole my pelvic floor seems in quite good nick.

If its right and I have got gest. diabetes the chances of escaping with an intact pelvic floor seem very remote. I am huge and expecting a 10lb er. but I know a very good continence advisor who will help me. oh the joys!!!

I've just noticed a discussion of the day - sex in pregnancy, but having had a quick skim through noticed that bethoo and shiny had already posted, weren't we three the minxs from yesterday.Anyone would think we were rampant

bethoo · 12/11/2009 14:13

partyof6 of course i am rampant managing to have three babies in the space of three years!
still unsure as to whether i will be having more babies! i say no but then think never say never!

somewhathorrified · 12/11/2009 14:15

shiny thanks for the info about mat pads, tried my local boots (all out typically) I think I'll just have to keep going in or take a trip to a proper town.

bethoo hell yeah I'm a BSG fan (I'm a bit of a geek really scifi, d&d, online gaming, horror etc ) I've not watched season 4 yet although am in the process of getting it, so no ruining how it ends!

I'm not getting on with the whole pelvic floor exercises...they make my tummy feel odd (a bit like getting that sinking feeling when you get bad news). I'm hoping that with this being my first it won't be too disastrous.

Partyofsix there is a connection between sex and incontinence although i've never tried it personally.

bethoo · 12/11/2009 14:23

somehathorrified ooohh how exciting, it is absolutley fab nad without saying too much it really makes yo think at the end, full of twists! i missed season 3 i think but the last season was phenomenal! glad there is another sci fi geek here! please let me know when you have watched it as i am bursting to discuss it with someone!
sex is prob good for incontinence i guess if you squeeze it when it is inside you! like holding in a wee!

flyingma · 12/11/2009 17:14

I can't believe I missed all the funny talk of sex and/or lack thereof. Partly due to work arrangements and partly to lack of inclination on my part, my poor DH is so resigned to it all that the other day when I mentioned something about cot-vs-cotbed vs something about next child, he made a comment along the lines of "oh goody, that means I am due a shag in the next few years". LOL. He is exaggerating but defo no nympho tendencies here.

[tmi alert] The midwife at my condensed antenatal class mentioned that if you were running late, that the recent scientific evidence shows that there is no clear link between sex/ semen and bringing on labour. I think at the point where I am 2 weeks overdue, like you, CTOFN I'd think I would give most things a go! My yoga teacher and also a lady who's back 2nd time round with the yoga teacher have sworn that stimulating one's nipples (sorry, I did issue a TMI alert ) help re-start or even bring on labour.

FlightofFancy snap re the movement thing. Baby's kicks have become more a movement thing... like a less subtle version of the initial "butterflies" movements I felt. Only difference is that if the baby's transverse, I can feel kicks in the side. When it is head up/down (it was down on Monday when the Doc checked so here's hoping it stays there), the kicks become more like squirming.

somewhathorrified You will need to get the maternity ones like shinybaubles mentioned. I cannot give you the citation coz I forgot where I read it but it was something along the lines of the heavy pads are slightly different and might be too drying in case you have had stiches (tmi, sorry) etc. Bascially you are more likely to get infections if you use the ones for heavy flow instead of the pregnancy ones. If there are any healthcare professionals on here, pls feel free to elaborate/ correct me.

[tmi alert again]
bethoo are you talking about the vag sweep? I thought the one somewhat is referring to is to prep the skin around there to make it more supple in the hope that you don't tear too much?

You can also have it while you are in labour and a friend of mine (overseas) who did, said that it gave her some comfort.

I asked the antenatal midwife about it and she said to "look it up on the internet". She said they can't do the ones when you are in labour but it might be worth looking up the ones you do at home. I think for me this falls into the I'll give it a go if there is half a chance it might help category.

somewhat I was hoping to give that a go soon and I know this is around the time we should start. Need to search for some info on it but am at work and I don't think it's the kind of info I want them to think I am looking at all day - LOL!

MissMarjoribanks Welcome! I'm moving up to not far near you in a few weeks time. And not a moment too soon, I just want to nest and settle things.

sockmonkey · 12/11/2009 17:32

DS2 was up 6 times last night 6!! Between 12.30 and 6am.
Have begun to realise what I am letting myself in for again.
No chance of getting jiggy, DH & I are both too exhausted. LOL. Maybe by this time next year
Had a bizare one yesterday where it felt like bub was tickling me. Started at top/right hand side of bump & moved all the way down. Makes a change from the kung-fu.

Mama2b5 · 12/11/2009 18:06

sockmonkey · 12/11/2009 18:34

Yay! So glad there are many Sci-fi fans on here. I knew you were a good bunch!
Looking forward to Bones. I have had a soft spot for David Boreanaz since his Buffy days.

(the thing that made DH quite an attractive prospect was that he had the entire Star Trek TNG collection on video LOL)

MissMarjoribanks · 12/11/2009 18:51

I'm a massive sci-fi fan as well, but more a books than TV girl. I was intending to watch all of BSG with DH (he has the first 4/5 series on DVD) but we began watching it when I had fatigue and sickness at the beginning of pregnancy and now just seeing the characters makes me feel sick again, so I can't sit through an episode. Wierd.

The first thing we used the brand new cot for was as a storage device for a Star Trek original film poster as it was a convenient place to lie it flat before it went off for framing.

Have had horrible day - I thought I'd managed to avoid SPD but over the last few days I've had pain all around the tops of my legs, particularly the left one and can't think it would be anything else. It's the worst it's been today and I'm hobbling around like an old lady. Had a dreadful night's sleep because I got used to lying on my left side but now it sends shooting pains through my hips and bump. Ugh. Moan over!

You lot are packing your hospital bags already. That's organised. I haven't got a single thing for mine.
