Welcome Holly.

As for carriers Claire, I was given a Baby Bjorn when I had DS but I found it to be really, really uncomfortable. It's probably because I was short but I couldn't get the straps at the back adjusted properly and so it used to give me the most awful backache.

This time I'm going to be getting a Moby wrap as it's basically just a long length of fabric so I can adjust it however I want. It's even possible to BF in it if you get the hang of it!!

Still got to get it though so I can't reccommend just yet.

Moosy · 20/10/2009 16:19

I had a Bjorn too which I used for DD1 and DD2 but could never get on with - it used to hurt my shoulders/back and felt like the baby was hanging off me iyswim? This time I've got a Kari-me (same as moby wrap) which looks great - I got my brother and his wife to try their 4 week old in it and they both said how comfy it was, their baby fell straight to sleep in it and looked really happy. I'm looking forward to trying it out now!

Catz · 20/10/2009 16:45

Another vote for Kari-me (though not tried Moby, sure it's good too). I had one from when DD was about 6 weeks and she loved it. Bought it because I could never get her to sleep properly in the day in her cot/pram. She was really happy to be kept in sling and slept really well. Much easier to go on country walks and so on if that's your thing. Also much easier to go round town because you can just nip up the stairs or walk through narrow aisles rather than trying to move a huge pram around. It has lots of position so supposedly you can use it from birth to 3ish. We used it all the time till she was about 6/7 months and she always liked it. Also used it on holiday and round the airport when she was 1 and it was still useful.

One thing - if you have a DH/DP then get a colour he's happy with so he can use it too. DH loved wondering round town with tiny baby strapped to him - said he got loads of attention!

I lent mine to friends, asked for it back and they said that they'd take it on holiday for 3 weeks and then return it.... am getting a bit anxious now as it is one of my 'must have's' for when the baby arrives.

anniebigpants · 20/10/2009 16:52

Welcome Holly, wow, not surprised you are tired working that many hours. When do you plan on starting your maternity leave?

Im currently bidding on a Kari-me sling on Ebay, heard really good things about them, we borrowed a Bjorn from a friend when DS was newborn, but i couldnt get away with it.

jumblies · 20/10/2009 21:17

Hi ladies,

Am feeling very sorry for myself today, have had the week from hell. Oven broke down, I sliced the top of my finger off cutting vegetables and DD decided to contract a vomiting bug and pass it on to DH. Then today DD developed a cough and fever and when I tried to give her medicine she kept spitting it out and struggling. In the end I made her sit on the naughty step till she decided to take it properly...I felt like the most evil mummy in the world but I wanted her fever to come down and couldn't think of any other way to get her to take her medicine, we'd tried threats, treats, reverse psychology everything. Does anybody else have problems getting their 2 yr olds to take medicine? The problem is she is never normally sick so I haven't had much practise

Oh and a pregnant lady told me today that I looked as big as she did after I told her I was 30 weeks, seeing as she was 37 weeks I was not too happy...I think I am cooking a big un!

charlymouse you have reminded me that I must get dh to give me a bit of pruning as my garden is starting to get a little wild and could do with a little pruning

blairsnitch sorry to hear about your grandad, its horrible watching your grandparents go down hill. Sorry you are being woken by ds...I have an early rising dd at the moment who is getting up at 5 and it is killing me, she also didn't sleep through till she was over a year so I am hoping I get a 'good' sleeper this time. I can't imagine how happy I'd be if this one sleeps through by 3 months

arrggamazingbouncingspider Can I be cheeky and ask if you have any mothercare vouchers left? My email address is [email protected]
I'm not really a doughnut girl and walk past our krispy creme stand 3 times a week without being tempted...however I can often be found on my sofa polishing off a whole tub of haagen daz/ben and jerrys in one sitting

On the sling front, I have a babybjorn which was given to me last time round which I never used. I also had a mei tei sling which I loved for dd from when she was about 5/6 months old and I used to carry her everywhere on my back. I have bought a hugabub for this one (haven't tried it out but it is like a moby) for the first few months and then will use my meitei for when he wants to look around a bit more (they are good for back carrying)

holly welcome to the thread, 50 hours a week? You must be looking forward to maternity leave! Is this your first pregnancy? I had a cold earlier on this month and managed to have a small leak when I had a particularly violent attack of the sneezes...the old pelvic floor is not what is used to be I don't think it's anything to worry about - just try to do your pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the area.

Ok, must dash as can hear DD waking herself up with a coughing fit.

TheBlairSnitchProject · 20/10/2009 21:42

Thanks Jumblies. Grandad got fitted with a pacemaker today as the consultant was a bit worried about how long it took for his heart to return to a normal rhythm after his coughing fit but he seems to have come through it well - I suppose that's the joy of dementia, he doesn't remember what's happening. He's been really calm about it all apparently which is good cause he got all confused and violent when he first moved into the nursing home and we were worried he'd do the same with this change. He's going home tomorrow and I'm heading up north on Friday to see him so all is looking good.

As for medicine. We always used a syringe for DS. You can buy special, medicine giving syringes from most pharmasists for a pound or so and it really helps with not spilling sticky Calpol everywhere when trying to give it to a wriggling child. Won't stop her spitting it out though - the only thing I found helped with that was full sugar, normal Calpol. The night stuff and the sugar free stuff are quite bitter (I tested them ;) ) so it's not surprising a toddler won't take it. Either that or a treat afterwards maybe?

Hope the rest of your week gets better

jumblies · 20/10/2009 21:49

glad your grandad is coping well, hope he is not too confused when you go and see him. Alzheimers is such a cruel disease.

The problem with my dd is that she is a stubborn one. She actually likes the taste of the calpol but doesn't like being told that she has to have some. After I forced her to take it, she said it tasted nice!! I have used the syringe when she was younger but she is a good spitter and was hoping that it could be a little more civilised now that I can talk/reason with her. Ah well, thats toddlers for you.

TheBlairSnitchProject · 20/10/2009 22:05

Nothing civilised about toddlers

I guess you already explained to her that it would make her feel better?

How about decanting 5ml into a bigger desert spoon (to reduce spillage potential) and letting her feed herself the Calpol? Or maybe mix it into some milkshake?

Mum told me tonight that while Grandad has forgotten pretty much everything/one else, he remembers my DS!! He thinks he's my sisters child but he remembers him and the last time we visited! He was talking about DS following the homes cat around Not bad to say we probably only see him once every 6 months! I was quite shocked.

Milliemuffin · 20/10/2009 22:09

I've been quite lucky with DS, I've always asked him if he would like some medicine to make him feel better so he always has a choice and he's always said yes but my friends' 2yr old refuses it every time and she's tried everything!

I also had a babybjorn but it gave me back ache so going to borrow my friends sling for a bit, not sure which make but its basically a long piece of material that you adjust around your back.

I'm due on 27th and cant decide whether to write xmas cards in nov and get them posted or wait til around 16th/17th to write them just incase someone puts in an early appearance?

Moosy · 20/10/2009 22:22

Millie, I was thinking I'd do the envelopes for the cards and write the "To x, from Me, DH," part and leave the children bit blank so I can fill it in at the lst minute before posting. That way I'll have done all the time consuming bit and will just have to find a few minutes to fill in the "DD1, DD2 and DD3" bit. Then if she's late I'll just fill in "DD1 and DD2" and leave it at that. Overthinking things? Me?

TheBlairSnitchProject · 20/10/2009 22:26

DD will be here before Christmas cause I'm having a c-section. My issue is, we still don't have a name for her!

I want to order DS's letter from Santa too and think DD should have one too but I can't really order one of those without a name either!

LaDiDaDi · 20/10/2009 22:57

Lots of long posts and welcome to holly!

I don't think that you're overthinking the xmas card issue Moosy, I've been having exactly the same thoughts. Ds will arrive before xmas (planned section) but will we have agreed on a name and had time to write cards before xmas? Think I might use it as a v. good reason excuse to cut right down on xmas cards this year.

LaDiDaDi · 20/10/2009 22:57

X posts Snitch lol.

TheBlairSnitchProject · 21/10/2009 07:43

lol LaDiDaDi, at least I'm not the only one with that problem

Forgot to say, I got my new buggy yesterday! Got a Phil & Teds with a doubles kit and will be using it in single mode for DS until DD arrives so he's used to it. So far, he loves it. We've got it up in the lounge as that's where it got left after we'd put it together last night and DS is currently filling it with teddies to push round and round.

At least this way, he'll be used to it by the time DD arrives and it will be one less thing that changes.

Going to get myself a few little sheets and blankets to line the cocoon with to make any leaks easy to deal with and to make it super cosy.

Mybox · 21/10/2009 09:37

I have used a baby bjorn sling for my five kids and it's super! I use it instead of a pushchair - no back problems at all. You need to have the baby in so you can kiss the top of his/her head - at this height setting it was perfect for me.

Claire236 · 21/10/2009 09:39

Thanks for all the sling comments. Think I might go for a Moby just because of all the pretty colours. Not that I'm shallow or anything.

My nan's got Alzheimers & we're waiting for her to get a place in a home. Some of the things she's done are very scary but the worst thing is that she's like a different person. There's this blank look in her eyes most of the time like she's not really there. She's started to get violent too.

Just got back from the midwife & everything's ok. Head 1/5 engaged now. Obstetrician next week & next mw appt booked for 36 weeks. If this little one stays put until next mw appt will be very happy.

TheBlairSnitchProject · 21/10/2009 09:50

If you find somewhere cheap to get the Moby, let me know Claire. DH has requested a "Moss" coloured one. I'd probably have gone for pink but as I'll be wanting him to use it too, I suppose I'd better comply

Grandad was a whole different person after he'd got settled in his care home. He had been losing weight to the point where he was gaunt and ill, he always looked confused and would often be found either wet (where he'd peed himself) or half naked where he'd changed his clothes and gotten confused halfway through. Trying to convince him that he needed to put trousers on was a real task somedays!!

He was violent towards a couple of nurses for the forst week or so and was also found wandering into other peoples bedrooms at night but the staff were fab and adjusted his medication to keep him calm while he settled in. Now he's much happier. He's put weight back on. He smiles. He's got quite a few friends at the home and likes the staff and he hasn't been violent for ages!

I hope the care home is just as good for your Nan

jumblies · 21/10/2009 10:31

blairsnitch I did think about mixing it with milkshake or something but she doesn't eat much and I'd probably end up cajoling her to drink/eat whatever I'd mixed it with which would amount to doing the same thing. I also tried the giving her control over the spoon thing and she would have none of it. After yesterdays naughty step threat she seems more willing today, think it is because we praised her so much when she actually opened her mouth willingly. Hopefully that was the last of the medicine battles

So sorry that your grandad has deteriorated so badly. Hopefully he will have some lucid moments while you are there.

We still haven't bought our phil and teds, must get a move on. Still have so much to do [panic emoticon]

milliemuffin can we not use our imminent arrivals as excuses to forget the drudgery of christmas or is that a bit too scrooge like

DD still had a fever this morning but the last dose of calpol has done the trick and she is currently skipping around the living room singing songs to herself and dancing with her teddy. Anyone have a chicken and veg soup recipe they want to share, as I thought it might be a nice dinner for her, perhaps with a little pasta thrown in.

Hope everyones day is going well.

ArghhhhmazingBouncingSpider · 21/10/2009 11:12

waves

Claire236 · 21/10/2009 13:24

blairsnitch - Will let you know about the Moby if I find it cheap. Don't think dh will be using it but as I'm having a boy I won't be getting a pink one. It's good to hear something positive about a care home. My nan has lost loads of weight & seems so unhappy & bewildered.

Welcome Wrennies.

Scorps · 21/10/2009 13:51

Did you get my email arrgghh? I emailed from dhs account.

So mega tired. Mimi was up alot in the night, coughing and then she was sick, but is fine today. No nursery fr her today. We were up nearly every hour!

ArghhhhmazingBouncingSpider · 21/10/2009 15:29

Yes got your email scorps!
I probably will have to do it tomorrow now, had full meltdown earlier and sister made me go take a nap, now I just cant make the effort to go out!

ViktoriaMac · 21/10/2009 15:31

Hey everyone,

I got a Rockin' Baby reversible sling, I got it in a bright paisley pink, which I'm sure will raise a few eyebrows from the in-laws when I turn up with their grandson in it! It was pricey, but I love it. I also got a really cheap Baby Bjorn on ebay for DH, so he can share the fun without the feeling that he is wearing girly stuff!

Letting agent came round to spy check on the flat today and told me that her sister wasn't that big, even at 39 weeks and she had twins who both weighed 7 pounds. As if! I think people just forget how stupidly big you actually get! Last week at the Babyshow three said I looked small for 31 weeks, so it's swings and roundabouts, innit!
