blue - in a jug of hot kettle water IIRC . I sort of rotated them so there would be one in the fridge defrosting and a couple in the freezer at all times. So, the one in the fridge might need a bit longer in the hot water, or a bit less - depending IYSWIM. Boots do great breast-milk freezer bags which must be easier to defrost from.

Think of the milk as raw chicken. Get it out of the freezer and pop it in the fridge the night before you need it. Don't re-heat.

TBH I got a bit pump-happy last time and often ended up chucking it away . I think this may be why I always had plenty of milk in my boobs. Expressing a bit more than you need is a great way to keep the supply flowing and clearing any blocked teats. Also means you can eat more calories! Hoorah!

Getting quite excited for us all now!

DS came out as JERK SCORN PHOBIC WRATH and dd as STEALABLE WHORE BRILLIANCE. Not sure about that one

Audrey how exciting!! Enjoy your meal.

Welcome to Zippysmum How lovely to have another set of twins on the thread.

Have been trying to fill my diary in the hope that the next 3wks passes quickly. Had my hair done today, goodness knows when i will get back there again. Got some odd/worrying looks as if people were worried i was going to give birth in the salon

I kind of feel like i am over due now as dd made her appearance during this week - a bit like Audrey.

Congratulations to those of you who have now started your maternity leave.

OK an update

Went to see consultant at the hospital and was scanned. I am 38+4 and the baby is estimated at 9lb 8oz today, with 11cm of fluid. I am off for another GTT tomorrow at the GP. If it is positive I will be brought in to be induced within the week. If it is negative I will be left to go into labour as and when. The registrar that I saw said that a HB is now not advisable

Any thoughts please? Can I really not have a HB or is the doc being over-cautious?

Well done on the new thread, blue.

I can't believe how lucky I am - the wife of a guy at work has offered me her old medela mini electric pump (v surprised as she's a friend of DP's ex).

Oh Stealth - can truly empathise regarding work. You don't have long left, either, do you? My last half day tomorrow and really looking forward to joining you "ladies of leisure" (I know!). I was thinking of sneakily working from home tomorrow, but have arranged a meeting for first thing, so will have to go into the office, after all. Only a few hours, though.

Good to hear from you MGC! Was wondering where you'd got to. And you've updated the stats thread - good on you!

Welcome, zippysmum!

Fingers crossed Audrey

Few x-posts there! Blue!!

No advice really bratnav, am never really sure if they are speaking sense or just being overly cautious, and of course they never explain their reasoning either. Maybe they are concerned re his size compared to yours? if the result is negative, neither of you would need any extra monitoring..and a HB should be ok if they are willing to let you go into labour naturally? have you posted a new thread for advice? am sure there will be someone on MN with experience x

blinder · 25/08/2009 20:18

Bratnav - what is their exact reason for you not having a homebirth at the moment? Not sure what GTT means [shame] sorry!

But at any rate, so far you don't have a positive test result do you? And you are not being induced unless you do. So it seems to me that at this stage you aren't in any specific risk category . Unless they mean the size, but those estimates are notoriously inaccurate. I think a MW says in another thread that they can vary by 1/2 lbs either way!

I would go back and ask for the exact reason at this stage. If your situation changes ( like all of us) plans may need to change then, but not in advance surely?

Have you looked at the AIMS website? Lots of homebirth info, including good reasons not to have one.

bratnav · 25/08/2009 20:38

They are concerned that as I have excess fluid the cord may go through when my waters break or that he may get stuck at the shoulders.

GTT is a glucose tolerance test which will determine if I have gestational diabetes, I have already had a negative GTT result at 28 weeks.

I would say that DD1 was 9lb 14oz and I gave birth to her naturally without any problems.

Hope all goes well on Thurs Neddie - I'll race you back to the thread.

I'm off to my last mid-wife appointment this morning. Yay. Weirdly I feel more nervous this time round than I did first time. Thurs is going to be a long day and night. Think I will take myself off to a movie or something while DS is at preschool to keep my mind off it. Mum is coming to get him in the afternoon. Not sure how I'm going to cope with the induction starting so late as I am totally shattered this week and have been falling asleep on the couch even with an afternoon nap.

I have to stay in hospital 12 hrs after the birth of the baby for her to have blood sugar tests etc and then assuming everything is ok and no c'section I will move to an aftercare place for a night. Rather stay where there is medical help on hand if needed and it will be easier to avoid visitors. Private room, meals cooked and no housework sounds just the ticket.

Enjoy the sign spotting!

ooo new and exciting thread! Fingers crossed audrey

Bratnav I don't know what 'not advisable' would mean, whether that's an absolute definite no, or a maybe better if not. Can you speak to a midwife/head of midwifery or something to get a second opinion? I think in your position I'd weigh the potential risks (and I'd want those laid out for me, together with what would happen if those things happened during a home birth anyway, since they theoretically could) against my distance to hospital in case of transfer.

We had our first day of nct classes today, which i have to say was great - nice bunch of people, and nice teacher. The only weird thing was doing the practice contractions, where she had this menacing sound effect, like a great big horn building in intensity, which I found really quite scary. Luckily I don't think the real thing comes with the same sound effect

LittleCheese · 25/08/2009 21:01

well just had an hour of what i thought were contractions every 8 mins then had a wander to toilet and now nothing

Bratnav - sounds overly cautious about the shoulders getting stuck if DD1 was that big and your waters may not break until you are well into labour. Definitely ask more questions.

They'll be redoing your GTT cause insulin production usually gets worse the further into pregnancy you get.

TigerFeet · 25/08/2009 21:22

Oooh Audreyraines

Bratnav, it would be a good idea to speak to the head of midwifery re a homebirth. If the GTT is -ve then is it just the size that's a concern? If you've previously delivered a larger baby with no problem then I can't see what the issue is tbh.

How disappointing LittleCheese

I've been shopping today with my sister who is a lot younger and a lot thinner than me. She tried on and bought a top, she looks fabulous in it. I feel fat and frumpy

good luck mrs chemist!!

bratnav, are they saying you can't have a HB because of size? i think that's ridiculous. I would probably fight for having a homebirth unless there was a clear medical reason they could give me, but I'm a bit like that.

or is it because of polyhydramnios? isn't 11cm borderline (mild poly). It's a tricky one, I would just do a lot of reading and see what you feel comfortable with at the end of the day. It's more important to have a healthy LO than the way they are delivered. but that said, you don't want to be denied your HB unless there is sound medical reason (which I'm not always convinced there is).
