Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

smallone Yep, I too have found that "high BMI" is a convenient 'catch all' for several medical professionals shortcomings and or inability/desire to find any other reason.

The worst experience I had last time around was when I went to a consultants appointment late on in PG but saw the anaesthetist instead (not sure why - consultant not available or if it was to discuss options re: pain relief) Anyway he had a woman with him (possibly a student) and he checked for HB then wanted to measure bump (to check growth/expected weight of baby I assume) then (and this is the bit!) he grabbed my flabby bit of tummy waved it about and said to the woman "we can't measure accurately because of all this so it's a bit pointless but we have to do it" Was sooooo upset and in tears for hours ..Then he was the bl**dy anaesthetist for my epidural! I was on copius amounts of gas & air at the time so whispered (probably not very discreetly) to my midwife and anyone else that would listen that I didn't like him and that he was a mean mean man .

I'm at a different hospital this time around (still on consultant care due to BMI) and so far, so good... Hoping I'll avoid any similar situations!

Hopefully this registrar will be the only one with this attitude that you come across during this pregnancy.

smallone · 03/06/2009 09:17

MrsKitty , I think you were very restrained not to have said more! I also have the very attractive high bump where my belly flab seems to be underneath, and she asked me to "lift this" so she could scan underneath, twonk, despite the fact that I'm lying there with a tight flat belly button 4 inches higher!...hmm what did she think that was? my lunch? I was too at the time and I hadn't seen what she was writing in my notes but if I see her again I hope I'll give her a piece of my mind! I might ask them to read out what they are writing while I'm there so they can say it to my face.

May I also point out that your growth chart is calibrated on your height and weight so it takes into account your pre-existing shape, that's why they are sent off for individually. If you are unfortunate enough to meet him again you could shame him with his lack of knowledge. That or sympathise with him that he can't hide his faults under his clothes.

Apparently they want high BMIers to meet with the anesthetist so they can assess what size elephant gun they'd need to knock you out. I did point out to my MW that surely if I needed another cs they'd have to give me another spinal (which I had last time with no probs), its not like they can just give me a wooden spoon to bite on can they? She did snort, and agree with me!

DevilsAdvocaat · 03/06/2009 11:59

hello everyone.

we need a new thread as this one takes ages to load on my crappy laptop. any ideas?

smallone and mrskitty, how very upsetting. people can be so insensitive sometimes.

littlepea72 · 03/06/2009 12:34

Smallone oh my god!!!!! Did the silly bitch even have the dropler on??? Why do people have to blame everything but themselves. She could of had you in a right panic if you hadnt of known....a hell of a lot more than she did! And MrsKitty....i would of slapped his hand away and told him where to go, bloody people! Having a high BMI isnt a health hazzard to your baby, ive known alot of things to happen to really thin people. Im 3 stone heavier this time round, and so what, a nice wee padded tummy for my baby

Hope everyone else is doing ok

princessmel · 03/06/2009 16:56

Sorry some of you are having rubbish times with consultants etc.
I can't believe how incompetant some of them seem.

WRT the new thread, how about we call it something to do with starting to feel better and starting to feel baby! Like feeling better and feeling baby! Or is that totally rubbish!?

I have been gardening with my dad and dd all afternoon. Feel very pleased with myself

BellaCullen · 03/06/2009 18:19

Can`t believe the incompetence of some of your consultans.

princessmel like the title and definetly need new thread can`t believe its no.4 already.Am completely useless with thinking about a good title myself.

Was suffering really bad with SPD mon and tue felt like an old lady when tried to walk.Pain was going from pelvis all down my right thigh.Think need to go back to physio. Are there any excerises I can do?Feeling better today.
Baby seems to be moving less at moment but did move loads when I had chocolate yesterday. Feel so of you who have heard HB I got a listening device from Mothercare but still haven`t managed to hear the HB. Wish I got a doppler now as mine is rubbish.

Yay that people like the title!

ballio · 03/06/2009 20:29

Hi all

We have finally fixed our internet so hopefully i can catch up with how everyone is going! (its a lot of reading)

Few aches and pains here, seem to be in agony with possibly trapped wind, its all over my tummy though right up to my ribs, feels like trapped wind but nothing seems to releive it......or maybe its something else, can anyone shed any light? starting to worry myself a bit!

Im also pleased its been a cooler day today, was a big sweaty mess over the hot days

CalypsoFlame · 04/06/2009 08:47

{waves} Hi everyone!

Quick browse through and see there have been some lovely scans and some not so lovely medical staff, bah, what terrible healthcare, hope things improve on that front

Fidelma - such awful news about your friend

KleinMaus We've too have just sanded all our floors and are in the process of renovating our hallway so I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND your concerns regarding dust (am also asthmatic). Our house is 1850s so also concered re lead-based paints etc (and we have lead water pipes which we now run through a lead reduction filter but still weighs on my mind for any very early pg damage ). House has been a building site for over a year though and very much want it to be finished before baby comes.

Don't have any advice as such - we hoover a lot but dust gets EVERYWHERE. Have two other friends who had babies the last 3 weeks also house renovating and their babies seem very healthy

Sad day today - have very reluctantly given up cycling to work as of this morning. Yesterday's cycle home was nothing short of miserable; a gazelle-like racer bike and London traffic do not make for a relaxing communte at 5 months pg. Even had a Braxton-Hicks at Waterloo roundabout - a liability with all that traffic. Was hoping to make it to 7months but will endeavour to walk it instead...

Happy voting / exercising your democratic rights day

smallone · 04/06/2009 08:58

Ballio, I have days of this, I think its everything stretching and your organs having to move up out of the way. Of course being "regular" can only help make some more room so I'm eating lots of fruit at the mo! I had stabbing pain in the bottom of my ribs, left hand side yesterday. It would come and go but it was really sharp. It's gone today so I'm assuming it was more reorganisation! Hope you're feeling better today.

I love the cooler weather! I'm definitely a winter person, I burn in the sun, get heatstroke in the heat and come out in really itchy rash. JOY! Bring on autumn! I think I need to get more mat clothes, as most of mine are too hot as dd was a january baby and I wore my own clothes for most of the summer I was pg with her. Also keep throwing my bras in the bin with disgust as they are now soooo uncomfortable!

smallone · 04/06/2009 09:05

Calypso Sorry you've had to stop cycling, Its a bit of a landmark when pregnancy first stops you from doing something. But WELL DONE for getting this far! Maybe you can do some less stressed cycling at weekends or something.

Re renovation dust, you're prob doing this already but are you sealing the doors to other rooms in the house? Shut the doors and seal round with gaffa tape, I should at least keep the dust to a few rooms. I think you can hire industrial vacuums that constantly suck the air in but I have no idea how much they cost vs how much you're worried. You could always invest in one of those dust masks for yourself whenever you're around the dust.
