Hello all - my first post on here so please be gentle...

Am (I think) about five/six weeks gone - first time for me, so all is new and exciting/scary. According to BBC pregnancy calendar should be due around 16th Jan, but really unsure as my cycle is very random (anything between 35 and 50 days) but had a rough guess at date of conception!

Anyhow, really pleased to have found this site, as haven't told anyone except my mum yet, and she's no help advice-wise cos she last did it all over thirty years ago! Hoping to get lots of top tips and support off you guys until we get to twelve weeks and start telling all and sundry the happy news.

First question then - who should I ring first... my GP or the local hospital or try to track down a community midwife??? And is there any hurry to tell them? I think I need to be 'booked in' for first scan at twelve weeks, is that right?

Still waiting to get any signs other than very sore boobs and lots of farting ! Hope I don't get the vomiting too badly. Quizzed my mum on how she got on when preggers - do you guys think that your experiences are/were similar to your mother's?

Sorry - enough questions already.

Chuffed · 23/05/2005 09:23

Morning!
The tiredness has kicked in a bit for me but I only really got a week each trimester last time so hoping that will be the same.
Have incredibly sore ribs on the right hand side since yesterday, can't think of any reason apart from dd slept in our bed on Saturday night as she had a fever and maybe she kicked me but there is no bruising or anything so hoping that it isn't from the bub or something funny going on.
No morning sickness at all - long may this continue.
loomer - my pregnancy was only a little similar to my mums in that we both had generally good pregnancies, she got bad nausea early on but I didn't. Neither of us got stretch marks (aparently there is a genetic link there). You'll get a wealth of knowlege on here during your pregnancy, I found it awesome during my first.

Rachey1969 · 23/05/2005 09:51

Wecome Loomer and congratulations! Yes I would definitely say there is a link with your own mother - we both had similar generally good pregnancies, both went overdue loads, both had stretch marks but not varicose veins/piles! both had forceps deliveries and some strange baby positioning. And when my babe is born, my other kids will be 11, 9 and 7. When I was born my brother was 10 and my sisters 8 and 7. I would book in with your GP first who will direct you to the midwife and hospital, I know things do vary around the country but they don't tend to want to see you till about 10 wks although as its your first you may prefer to see someone. Relax and enjoy!

Rachey1969 · 23/05/2005 12:37

Hi me again, this is a rant to no-one in particular! I am a bit peed off because my GP surgery has just told me I won't be seen by anyone till I'm 12 weeks. I'm unsure of my dates as I've had only a few periods for a year while i've had a mirena coil. I had it taken out on March 11,had some bleeding on March 14 and then again on March 28 - so I could be 8 weeks now if I ovulated normally or I could be less. I had a positive test 5 wks after LMP. Previously my cycles have been anything from 4-6 wks. All my previous pregancies have had to be induced as I've been 2 wks overdue (using scan dates) so I want to get this one dated right! Argh, have left a message for community midwife. What if I wanted special testing? nuchal fold etc (don't think I do but want to talk about it with someone)

Rachey1969 · 23/05/2005 12:38

Oh yeah, and no scan till 18 weeks - is this cutbacks?!

TeriS · 23/05/2005 12:53

Jnow what you mean Rachey - it's really bad how much things differ from one area to another... I rember when I was 32 weeks with DS, and I needed an 'emergency scan' as they thought there were problems - I then had to wait 2 weeks for the scan! Felt like the longest 2 weeks of my life...

I don't think they sometimes realise how worried we all are, and to have to wait longer for scans, etc just makes the whole thing worse...

I have first midwife appointment this saturday, but I think that's just all the form filling stuff... really bad morning sickness, and just want to sleep all the time... hope everyone else is doing OK.. big [hugs] to you alll...

Rachey1969 · 23/05/2005 13:52

I guess I just want some love...! I think I will tell my mum soon, I am somewhat apprehensive of her reaction and I don't want to add to her worries (of which she has many). Desperate for dp to tell his parents who will be over the moon, I'd really like them to give him a kick up the backside re responsibilities (and I think that's what he's afraid of!) I should say that this was all his idea... I'm feeling so sick, tired, and hungry that it's hard to concentrate on my work. Feeling a bit tearful and over sensitive for no particular reason, ds2 is 9 today and I just couldn't let him go this morning.

Chuffed · 23/05/2005 14:18

Rachey hugs!!!

Must be really hard doing this on your own...

I probably won't get a scan until 10-12wks for dating but hoping to get a nuchal at the same time. They wouldn't give it to me last time.

Get your dh to pull finger, he should at least be giving you a massage in the evenings like calves and stomach to rub in that anti-stretch mark lotion.

Chuffed · 23/05/2005 14:19

sorry dp I meant

Rachey1969 · 23/05/2005 14:37

Cheers Chuffed! Dp is pretty good at looking after me especially as I cannot stomach cooking (although I can eat...! and he is a chef). I think like all men though, he finds it hard to fathom the female mind, let alone the pregant mind! I'm not sure about the nuchal scan - and I definitely wouldn't get that for free if I don't even get a midwife appointment till 12 wks! How old are you? Are you having any other tests? I am undecided.

Chuffed · 23/05/2005 14:59

I am 30 but had an amniocentesis last pregnancy as bloods showed high increase of abnormality and we wanted to know so would like to have nuchal to avoid amnio if possible. When I have 12 wk scan will be the first time I see a midwife too.

TeriS · 23/05/2005 15:24

Big hugs too Rachey - know what you mean - DH is really freaked out by my crying/ happiness/ crying again... bl*y hormones!! keep your chin up

lyra41 · 23/05/2005 19:37

Hi there

I'm having a private pregancy at the moment as haven't had all the tests yet and I don't want to frighten my other 2 kids (ds 12 years and dd 9 years) if it all goes belly up. I'm 8 weeks so far, and going to have CVS done soon. Feeling OK on the whole, now we've got over the shock of this unexpected surprise, but trying not to get too excited in case anything goes wrong.

Can't wait to get the all clear and start planning and dreaming though.

chezie · 23/05/2005 20:16

I too am due early jan and can honestly say I have never felt so tired in my life, well apart from my last pregnancy when I really wanted to lie down on the floor at work. I stopped work at 5 and a half mths last time coz I was so tired thinking it was only going to get worse, then I felt fine. In fact I had loads of energy up till the last 4 wks... sods law. ha ha

spub · 23/05/2005 21:40

Hello to you all!
Am delighted to be joining you here on this thread! Did a pg test at lunchtime and it would appear that I'm pregnant and due around Jan 25th which makes me 4+5!
Have a dd who's a Jan baby so looks like it may be an expensive month for us!
Fingers crossed all will be well. Feel a bit jinxy posting so early but am soooo excited! No symptoms as yet except for missed period and soreish boobs. Hope to confirm pg at GP's later in the week.
Congrats to you all and I hope to get to know you all a bit better over the coming months!

Chuffed · 24/05/2005 09:01

Welcome spub, chezie and lyra41.
Well my rib pain seems to have diminished somewhat, I was starting to wonder if it was pleurisy or something like that but must have just been bruising or stretching maybe.
Yes tired too...still but trying to work through it by going to the gym etc (strange I know.)

Eshay · 24/05/2005 10:53

Hi all, welcome to the newbies. I haven't posted for a while as dh was in hospital for skin cancer surgery. They cut out a huge lump of skin so hopefully that will be the end of the story. We'll know more next month when they have some test results. Timing couldn't have been worse of course as my hormones are all over the place and I'm trying to be strong for dh, show him that I'm coping and don't mind that he can't help out with DS. I'm very lucky in that I don't have many pg symptoms, just tiredness, but that might get better when I start back at work next week. I think the office will be a nice place for me to escape from it all. Definitely less tiring .

I rang the GP's office and asked about their procedure for new pregnancies and the receptionist wrote my name in the midwife's book. I can expect a call from her when I am 8 or 9 weeks pg. Sounds like a pretty good system but last time (different surgery) they screwed up all the paper work and it took ages before I could get a scan. I hope things go more smoothly this time.

Rachey1969 · 24/05/2005 11:11

Hi there Lyra41 and Spub - congratulations! Sorry to hear you've been having a rough time Eshay, I hope all is well now. I'm amazed how well you are all coping, I feel like poo! Just want to sleep all the time. Have some weird prickly pains in my pelvis which feel like my bladder being squashed rather like you get at the end of pregnancy so hope that means growing pains. Drove the kids to school today cos it was pouring with rain - had to be sick in my hands! (sorry TMI!) and also outside the back gate and my back door! Think the neighbours will think I'm an alcoholic or something! Spoke to community midwife yesterday who told me to come along to clinic today to start sorting out dates/scans/tests etc which feels like progress, I'd also like to get my teeth seen to for free! Still dithering about tests, hope to get some guidance this afternoon. How is everyone else?

Mumfun · 24/05/2005 12:07

Hi all

Cant beleive things are so different in different parts of the country. COmpletely understand Rachey that your hacked off not seeing anyone will 12 weeks. Im going to GP this pm to get into the system. Judging by my neighbour experience I should be scanned at 14 weeks but I would really like 13 weeks - probably wont get it. Our area you get nuchal as standard so will have that I think because last time it gave us such a positive result - even if its not good I probably wont have any invasive tests cause dont think I could bear to risk them. Very tired somedays- still bit of discomfort . Starting to have a bit dicky tummy but nothing like last time when I was so nauseous for soooooooo long. Friend says nausea could start 8 weeks. Not working so dont think tiredness/everything so bad this time.

Eshay - hope all turns out - not an easy time for you.

Hope all newbies well and sticky dust to our beans.

MF

chezie · 24/05/2005 14:29

Hi all
Hope your all feeling well, I had a bit of a scare on sunday. had spotting and I really thought It was another MC. I contacted the MW and went to hospital for a scan. Thankfully everything is ok. I feel SOOOO tired, every night I fall asleep on the sofa before 9pm. Lets hope the sickness and tiredness soon passes for all of us. see ya soon

sweetkitty · 24/05/2005 14:59

hi all

welcome and congratulations to all the newbies, this is my second pregnancy already have a DD 10 months, am 6+5 today due 12th January.

I live in London (for the next few days anyway moving at the weekend) last time I excitedly booked an appt with my GP at 7 weeks was told congrats and he would register me with the midwives that was it, no test nothing, didn't get my booking in appt with midwife until I was 12 weeks when she said "why haven't you had your muchal fold scan yet" like it was my fault.

Anyway I had already had 2 scans at 9 and 10 weeks for heavy bleeding especially at 9 weeks when there was loads of blood thought I was losing the baby but when I was scanned there she was face and everything so it's not all bad news having a bleed.

Will register with new doc next week think things might be different in Scotland! Felt a bit off colour yesterday no appetite either, same as DD then it came back with a vengence.

Better get back to the packing, not easy with a 10 month old DD crawling about the place!

Eshay · 24/05/2005 15:17

Best of luck with the big move, Sweetkitty. Moving house is such a big thing and extra hard when you have a little crawler on your hands. Soon you'll be with your dp!

Rachey1969 · 24/05/2005 15:46

Good luck sweetkitty! Managed to get 30 secs with the midwife this afternoon - apparently she comes to the house at 12 weeks (I shall have to clean the demolition zone FFS!) She says I probably need a dating scan - early scan only normally for those wanting testing.

chezie · 24/05/2005 16:46

Good luck with your move sweetkitty.
I moved house last year 3 wks before I had my DS2.
It was strange in hospital coz when I thiught of home I kept thinking of the old house! We only moved half a mile down the road though, not from one end of the country to the other! good luck and tak care
