Thanks to Nutty for all the thread suggestions including this one. I hope no one minds but I picked this one in honour of the brilliant race commentary we had from Nuts and Frekkles the other night. Hopefully we will get some more.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi everyone ... my bump is now a baby!

Oscar William was born at 4.47am on Sunday morning.

My waters broke at 4am on Friday and we went into hospital to be checked out. They said that if I didn't go into labour by 5pm Saturday I had to phone them. I was getting contractions on and off but they didn't come to anything, so we were told to come into the hospital at 9pm. I was getting pretty upset because I wanted a waterbirth or at least an active labour with just gas and air, and didn't like the sound of an induction at all.

We were lucky with a fab midwife who understood my concerns and decided that enough was happening to hold off the drip. So we roamed the hospital corridors until midnight, then went back to the delivery unit as the contractions got stronger. I had to spend time being monitored but the midwife tried really hard not to be obtrusive. I got really disheartened because the contractions were in a strange pattern, and would get really frequent and then go away for 15mins. At 4am I finally cracked and asked for an epidural, but as she was getting everything ready the midwife checked me again and discovered that actually I was really to push so too late for an epidural anyway.

Oscar was then born at 4.47, face up, weighing 7lb 2. Because of the monitoring I was lying on my back but the midwife let me reach down and 'deliver' him myself once the shoulders were out, which was so magical.

Scarily the midwife said the placenta was huge, and if I'd gone to 40 weeks Oscar would have been 11 or 12 lb [ouch emoticon]. Amazingly I didn't tear, just a graze, which has made life so much better than last time when I had a 2nd degree tear.

We stayed in for 12 hrs for observation because of the waters breaking so long before the birth, but we're home now and Oscar is doing ok with feeding. He's pretty sleepy during the day and wide awake at night. my milk is starting to come in so I'm hoping that he'll be able to cluster feed in the evening and then sleep a bit at night.

Hope everyone else is well ...

I think it may be a little small for a commune. Porn or otherwise. I was planning just to build it from sticks you see.

bronze · 17/03/2009 16:25

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 16:32

Congratulations!!!!!!
Oscar is such a fab name it is our spare one in case he doesn't look like a Felix.

babypringle · 17/03/2009 16:35

that's funny bm, we had felix as a spare.

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 16:35

Now you are scaring me

BabyBolat · 17/03/2009 16:36

Oh pringle - really so pleased for you

sorry to move on from that to other less lovely issues - but on the bfing - sorry pringle you made me think of it!! I don't have very sticky out nipples and in all the pics and things I have seen all the women have huge nobbly nips for bfing - will that be a problem if LO has less to 'grab'

SpringySunshine · 17/03/2009 16:37

BB, women successfully breastfeed with inverted nipples, so I should think you'd be absolutely fine.

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 16:38

BB I had flat nipples, and they popped out just fine. They really aren't particularly pointy even now. If you are worried you can buy a little gadget you pop on each of them inside your bra that pulls them out (usually used for inverted nipples). Or test them with a pump, if you have one to hand.

BabyBolat · 17/03/2009 16:39

oh ok then thanks - carry on with lovely baby talk now... I am off to make a cup of tea - anyone want????

BabyBolat · 17/03/2009 16:39

babypringle - what does little oscar look like? dark hair etc - oooh I want my baby now....

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 16:40

BB do yours pop out in the cold??

SpringySunshine · 17/03/2009 16:40

Yeah, go on then, if you're making one.

I've done so much today. It doesn't really look like I have, but I'm quite impressed. I hope DH appreciates my efforts, especially after the lack of sleep he inflicted on me last night

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 16:41

Pringle, how many weeks were you when he was born? I have forgotten.

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 16:46

Ooooooooooooooooh I nip out to Tescos and BabyPringle has had a baby! You can't leave this thread for a moment!!!

Lovely name and so glad that young Oliver isn't the only boy on the board. He was getting swamped by little girls, poor lad.

Tell us more about him. Oh I am sooooo broody!

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 16:52

And in the excitement I forgot to say "wow" to Mumble about the bloody show.

My goodness there are going to be babies everywhere before we know it.

electra · 17/03/2009 16:59

Congratulations babypringle!

Sorry, I haven't posted - I still read and try to keep up to date....Hope you are all well.

Thanks for your replies to my last moan! I'm still having problems with the midwife handling my case re: wanting a home birth and AIMS has advised me to write a letter to the chief executive of the hospital stating that I am having a home birth and could they please arrange it asap and ask for a different midwife. I'm 35+6 and I don't really want it up in the air when I go into labour.

How are you all feeling? Have you chosen names? I seem to change my mind every day LOL!

babypringle · 17/03/2009 17:04

Thanks for all the sweet messages!

Oscar was born at 37+1.

He's got lots of dark hair, which is strange because DS1 was bald until about 18months. At the moment he has rugby player ears, but apparently they will shape up over the next few weeks. He's soft and little and pink and smells amazing!

I'll try to put photos up soon, but off to pick up DS1 from nursery now

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 17:05

Electra I am obsessing about names non-stop. I am fairly ok about our shortlist for girls (although everything feels like second best as there is no name that we love quite as much as DD's).

For boys I am in a bit of a panic. I rashly agreed to DHs choice but the more I think about it the more I think I will wince slightly whenever I introduce my son to people. I've tried to express this to DH but he just sniggers and says it's a great name. I find it so difficult to discuss with him. We normally agree on things so easily.

Schulte · 17/03/2009 17:10

Congratulations Babypringle! Glad they let you get on with the birth without interfering too much. Hope little Oscar and you continue to do well - you sound very much on top of things.

Back from lovely 3 course lunch with a couple of also heavily pregnant friends - this is what maternity leave is all about and I will meet another friend for lunch tomorrow, yay.

Well done people for shows / engaged heads etc. None of that going on here of course but LO has instructions to stay in until after Easter anyway. I'll just sit back and watch you all pop

Off to do a bit of tidying now...

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/03/2009 17:18

congratulations babypringle!!!!!

and mumble - yay for the bloody show!

well after being kicked off the pc by DS i hung some laundry out, filled and ran the dishwasher and ironed a bunch of stuff. how great am i??

electra - we have girl names picked out. if it's another boy he may be named after DS (DS's suggestion) because we are really at a loss. Our surname starts with CL so a LOT of names don't go with it. right now we're kind of thinking Declan but there's that damn 'cl' in the middle of in. Or Ronan, but it's too similar to DS's name. bugger it. i give up.
