Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Lazzer · 16/03/2009 14:12

MsG I asked the same thing at my last MW appointment. Was told (very sharply by her!) that she doesn't measure fundal height as she says it's not accurate. She's very old fashioned (and a bit crap though). I'm 31 weeks now.

llareggub · 16/03/2009 14:31

I'm not having my fundal height measured either, but then I have a growth scan every 4 weeks, so I'd assume that'd be why!

Momino · 16/03/2009 14:41

Have a very happy Birthday, Blotted! You deserve a great, if relaxing day.

my MW is measuring f/height which is why i'm going back for growth checks every 3 weeks - i'm huge this time. I do question the accuracy but am glad she's following up: if I measure big next fri, then she'll send me for a growth scan.

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 14:42

llare I think you're right about that. If there are any problems with the measurements they would just refer you for a growth scan and you're already having them.

Lazzer I still don't understand your mw. Maybe you should direct her to the http://www.pi.nhs.uk/growth/index_growth.htm perinatal institute and show her their recommendations. It might not be the most accurate way of assessint growth, your mw is right there, but unless you go for regular growth scans it's the only way of keeping an eye on growth. Just looking at your belly from the distance wont tell her anything!

On a totally different subject: the cat has been thoroughly enjoying the sun today. She was lying spread out on top of the patio table and it looked like it was a lovely day to be a cat!

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 14:42

My link didn't work try again

chocolatebunnies · 16/03/2009 14:45

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for all th kind messages about my bump, feel a bit better now!

I havent been to see Dr as yet, but only because I feel totally fine, not getting the pins and needles as much and havent had a headache yet today, so I think it would proably be a waste of time seeing someone, seeing as its probably just a pregnancy stress thing.

Happy Birthday Blotted Its mine tomorrow! Hope you've had some presents and texts by now!

Not planning on doing anything for my big day tomoz (how boring) off to the park with Madi this afternoon, and maybe Living Coasts, google it if you'd like to see what it is, its like a zoo!

Be back on later on

Lazzer · 16/03/2009 15:05

Thanks Belgian for the link. I'll tackle talk to her again about it. She weighs me every time I'm there (every 2 weeks now) but then I've only put on 5 lbs so far (as I lost over a stone in the first trimester, think it was the severe drop in alcohol consumption!) so I doubt if that's a particularly useful method of checking the baby's size/growth etc.

MsG · 16/03/2009 16:50

Isn't it funny how midwives do things differently? In my area, they don't weigh you unless you ask - apart from at the first appointment to check your BMI. I think the thinking is that the woman's weight doesn't correlate to the baby's - but still, you would think they might want to keep an eye on it in case it might affect other things.

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 17:03

There's some debate going on regarding weighing women. They're thinking that it might have its uses as e.g. excessive or too little weight gain could affect the baby and sudden significant weight gain could be caused by water retention and a sign of pre-eclampsia. But of course that all depends on your booking weight. E.g. A clinically or morbidly obese women could have a healthy pregnancy yet loose weight, because she's started to eat healthily.
Where I am women get weighed twice: 1x at booking and 1x at 36 weeks or so because the anaestetists have asked for a recent weight to be in the notes in case women need a GA in an emergency.
I do think, though, that it doesn't really give any idea about the baby's growth, just your own health and maybe whether you've been indulging in a piece of cake too many

runningmonkey · 16/03/2009 17:11

Just checking in as haven't had chance to catch up over weekend. Hope all are well and enjoyed the sunshine at the weekend.

Things aren't so good here - our house sale may have fallen through so have been on tenterhooks all weekend trying to wait until today to see if it is ok... no news so far (am presuming that is good news). Boy do I need my yoga class tonight!

ReeBee · 16/03/2009 17:12

Happy Birthday Blotted, hope your day's improved! And Happy Birthday chocolatebunnies for tomorrow, hope you have a great day.

I can't believe how much everyone on here writes, it's madness to try to keep up!

My MW does measure fundal height and doesn't weigh me - sounds like I've got a good deal. I do quite often have a student in the room which is fine - in fact, I have to say all our community MWs are brilliant. They are struggling with which way round the baby is though - I have an anterior placenta which is masking things so he's query breech at the moment. Still lots of time for that to change but I am making a conscious effort to sit properly.

Is anyone really excited yet? We'd bought nothing until ten days ago but we have now bought pretty much everything in 2 mammoth shopping trips and for the first time it seems real - and very close!

Just need to sort out the nursery now (and rebuild our porch, aagh) and maybe I'll feel properly organised.

Is anyone else working until quite close to their due date? My last day is 24th April and I'm due 13th May. I can work from home whenever I like so I'm not too worried, but it seems like lots of you have finished already.

Off to the Cotswolds on Friday for a long weekend (with DH and our 2 dogs plus my mum and dad and their dog). Really looking foward to it - mum and I are having a spa day on Saturday; feel I need a bit of pampering now.

Better go, another massive post from me, I must make an effort to post little and often instead!

ReeBee · 16/03/2009 17:14

sorry, runningmonkey, crossed posts. Rubbish news about your house sale, fingers crossed for you.

runningmonkey · 16/03/2009 17:37

Thanks reebee we're finishing work on the same day but I've got a whole month before the baby is due so a bit more time than you.

think I've caught up. Sorry if I've missed any big news, just scanned the last few pages.

Jael contraction thing sounds scary. hope the painkillers have helped.

Blotted happy birthday, hope your day has got better and you've got some pressies

choc happy birthday for tomorrow - your ordeal at the hospital sounds horrible, hope your DR appointment is a bit better.

re itching - I don't have spots but have had itchy bump and arms for the last few weeks, can recommend lush's 'charity pot' as it smells delicious and seems to help. The sanctuary stuff sounds nice too, might check out our local boots at the weekend.

fi good that you have accepted an offer, hope you have found somewhere fab this weekend!

I'm not sure which way round bump is at the moment. At the midwife appt last week, he was head down but there was some massive wriggling on Thurs night when DH took me out to dinner and bump has changed shape and feels like there's a big hard ridge across my tummy so am suspecting transverse, but has moved loads again yesterday and today and placenta is top front so am not sure at all!

(pg brain alert!) Not sure if anyone has been doing this or have mentioned before but DH has been reading up about how he should talk to the baby in the bump so it 'knows' his voice. He said he felt really silly doing this so I bought him a gruffalo book which he has been reading to the bump every day before we go to bed. I am mightily bored by it but the bump seems to like it...

Polony · 16/03/2009 17:48

Chocbunnies how could you possibly think you are "big"? Are you taking the piss or what? I don't think you need us to tell you that of course your bump is very neat and compact. For heavens sake.

Happy Birthday Blotted - hope its a lovely one in the end. I'm generally inconsolable if I feel at all neglected on mine. Belgian - I'm with you - at your 30th - I would have made a bit of noise if that had been mine! And Blotted I hope you get the cake YOU want whether you make it or not.

Was on my way back from appointment today (yeah the one that made me miss our London meet ) and the cab driver was very chatty, as they are. He's old enough to be my father and is happily telling me about his own children's births. He was asking about where I would be having my baby and I mentioned something about a birthing centre. He says, "oh you're having it in water? () Well, I suppose it doesn't matter how you" - wait for it - "get rid of it." Baaaaad choice of words. Kind of a conversation stopper.

runningmonkey · 16/03/2009 17:56

ooh polony I agree, baaaad choice of words!

Still catching up - re wierd dreams... last night I dreamt I had a cs, it was a girl and my mum gave it to her friend to look after for two weeks and I had to go and collect it driving a mini scooter... bizarre or what!

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 16/03/2009 18:28

Polony - What a bizarre thing to say!!!

Blotted - Happy Birthday! Hope you're day ended up a good one in the end.

I bought a really cute soft cuddly giraffe today for the baby that goes perfectly with with the wallpaper border and bedding we have for the baby's room

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 18:57

polony That's a really odd way of saying it. On the other hand, my dh keeps talking about the time I'll drop. Not much better

runningmonkey Amazing that your dh reads to your bump. TBH I never talk to the bump out loud (I do think to it though), it makes me feel silly too. I know (s)he hears my voice often enough as it is. I was wondering if your dh's voice will sound differently to baby afterwards, at the moment he's hearing it through water and muscle and skin. It must sound really muffled. Let us know if it works. My dcs loved being on their dad's hairy chest from day 1. I think it's the slower breathing and heartrate that does it. They do say that babies do recognise music/rhymes that they hear in the womb. It didn't work for my dd though, I watched eastenders all the time back then and she didn't really react to the theme tune at all.

sausagenmash · 16/03/2009 19:01

Reebee and Runningmonkey - I finish on the 24th April too - 5 and a bit weeks and counting! That takes me up to 35 weeks I think..

Polony - you missed a great nosh up! (and non-alcoholic cocktails!) Am still stuffed and am rolling around my flat in an effort to get about. Lovely to meet some MNers, and put faces to names! Hope your appointment went well! Agree with you about choc's bump... I'm feeling mahoosive. Maybe I'm just a heffalump in 'normal life' - choc, you must have had a washboard tummy before, you lucky thing!

Runningmonkey - bugger about your house. Hope it all works out in the end..

I don't get weighed, but I've had my bump measured. Had a look at those fetal growth charts - ta for the link, Belgian. Am going to pinch a baby one from work before I go - I know you get them in the red books, but we have birth to 18 all on one bit of paper with more centile lines so am going to keep one safely somewhere. Will probably lose it...

Are any first time mums (jeez I still can't see myself in the 'mum' category!) out there secretly hoping that they might get a little card or something from their other half this Sunday, or am I being completely barking? Probably...!

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 19:31

sausagen wait until your first parent teacher evening. That's when you really really feel out of place. Me? A parent of a school age child? No, there must be some mistake. I'm far too young!!

Sounds like you London girls had a good time.

Runningmonkey Lets hope your house sale will go through after all.

My dcs have a teacher training day on Wed and so tomorrow after school I'm driving to Gravesend with them to see DH and on Wed we're going to view a few houses and schools in mid-Kent. It's really difficult. Finding a school you like from our distance AND they've got to have a space for both of ours to join midway their school career. No school so far has been able to garantee a place for both dcs, which is a real worry. We can't not have them in a school in September!

Febes · 16/03/2009 19:32

I only finish on the 30th of April and I'm due 8th May!! Scary. But I do have a 2 week holiday over easter in between now and then.

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 19:35

Ooh and Sausagen it really depends on your dp. If he's really into your pregnancy you might get something, if he's anything like my dh you wont. He didn't even get anything for my 1st mothers day when my ds was 4 months or so. His arguement was that ds couldn't hold a pencil yet, so what's the point of getting a card. After seeing my dissapointed face, he quickly got some flowers and folded a piece of A4 paper in 2 and made a drawing together with ds. Ever since he's been really got for Mother's day.

Hmm, everytime I write about my dh it makes him seem not all that nice: it's not true you know. Honestly he's really sweet, just not the most thoughtful of people when it comes to cards and presents.

Belgianchocolates · 16/03/2009 19:37

got for Mother's Day?? Not sure what I meant to say there. It might have been that he's good on Mother's Day.

sausagenmash · 16/03/2009 19:54

Belgian - hehe. I dropped a hint, and he said 'but you're not a mummy yet', to which he received a reply of 'what the bloody hell is all this then?!' He still didn't fall for it, but went off all smug, saying that Fathers Day comes along in June. Hmf.

"Parent teacher evening?!" NOOOO. I still feel like I'm still at school half the time. Something tells me I'm not going to be a yummy mummy...

Am sure your dp is lovely. Mine is in the pub. AGAIN. Ggrrr. Might have a (small) glass of wine

How can I be hungry after my massive lunch? AARRGHH!

pulapula · 16/03/2009 19:56

Evening all,

I finish on 17 April (cs probably on 19 May at 39 weeks) and am off to Centerparcs the following week. Hope i won't be too big and tired to join in activities with the kids. My mum and dad are coming too so hoping they will help out too...

We have been out from 8.15 to 5.45 today taking the kids to the zoo. Had a really nice time- lovely weather, kids well-behaved and not too busy so got some great views of the animals. My pelvis is a bit sore now though, although i wore my support belt all day.

I had a quick look at photos of me pg with DD but can't post on here as i didn't have any clothes on . But i must say i was much smaller with DD but i think that was to do with the fact i was much slimmer to start with and had strong stomach muscles then .

I am getting excited about my 4d scan on sunday

Polony · 16/03/2009 20:02

You know what Saus I could probably have done without the damn thing as they couldn't give me orthotics (that was the main part of the appt) without the right kind of shoes. Wish I'd known that BEFORE I bothered to go. So now I have to go, buy some new shoes a size too big for me, and go back again in a month. I have appointments everyday this week, again, except for friday. Poo.
