Oooh do you think I should? I've just spoken to dh and he said 'you're not having a home birth', duh I know that! We are going to book the private scan.

kitkatqueen · 14/02/2009 16:40

vjay - i agree with dd1 I was down for a homebirth - went borderline pre-eclamsia and edd and on going ino hosp for a check up went into labour. You can change your mind at any time you like, so I agree with leningrad - say you want a home birth and then change your mind later - you are allowed to change your mind!!! The system goes against us so often - use it to your advantage

fruitymum · 14/02/2009 17:25

Hi All

Can I join , please? Am 14 + 2 due 13 Aug. We have DD who will be 3 in May. Still managing to tie my size 8 trousers - just. Think that is due to ongoing nausea rather than a model like figure - I wish!!

nuttygirl · 14/02/2009 17:39

Welcome fruitymum - of size 8!

VJay - Definitely say you want a homebirth. As people have said you can change your mind any time about where you want to give birth.

Eek I've decided to go with an IM. Keeping it a secret though from family as they'll just moan at how much it is. Am really pleased about how flexible they are with payments. Basically we'll pay the deposit from savings, then have two or three months with v small payments (just what we can afford) then pay bigger amounts from my MA. She was even telling us that her business partner accepted a washing machine as part payment once (hers had broken and her clients had an appliances shop!).

Keep pmsl @ dd. She tries to pull her own knickers & trousers up after getting off the potty...but always pulls them up as far as she can at the front and has her bum showing at the back

VJay · 14/02/2009 17:58

Lol nutty your dd sounds sooo cute

cairns · 14/02/2009 18:36

nuttygirl that made me laugh about the potty. In part because it is so relevant. We bought DS a potty today to get him used to having it around and to learn to sit on it.... got it home and he immediately took the middle potty tray bit out and started walking around the house with it on his head

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 19:34

Vjay, I live in Glasgow and I don't get a 20 week scan either .

That's interesting about the home birth to get a 20 week scan. I had already said I wanted a home birth anyway so hopefully they will give me a 20 week scan.

VJay · 14/02/2009 19:45

I hope you do trixy.

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 19:54

It's so annoying that if we lived in a different postcode we would be getting it on the NHS.

We paid £200 for one last time.

Apparently they're bringing them in in my area in September, just slightly too late for me .

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 20:17

Although I do qualify for £5 worth of fruit and veg every week bizarrely because my postcode is considered deprived even though we earn too much to qualify for tax credits etc.

It's so stupid!!

Chrysanthamum · 14/02/2009 20:19

Cheers kitkat, Yes I've 2 others so its ok at home! At work its different. Hello to Trixy, I also live in Glasgow and would like a 20 week scan grrrr!

LittleFairySmile · 14/02/2009 20:49

Hi all, and welcome to newbies. This is a really long list, and there is so much to catch upon!

trixymalixy I had the same thing with H&M clothes being too small. I am a 12/14 in Mothercare and Blooming Marvellous, but came up a size 20 in H&M!!!

I can?t believe some of you aren?t offered a 20-week scan. It?s considered routine here to check for anomalies. VJay I also say tell them you want a just to get the 20-week scan. You know you?re not going to, but you want the care NOW!

nuttygirl we?re going with the IM too ? big decision as it?s a huge amount of money eh? My sister actually said ?I don?t know why you are bothering, you can go to Florida for that kind of money!? but I am really starting to relax into this pregnancy now! The IM we?ve booked even brings her own water pool. Not sure how I feel about a waterbirth, but a nice soak always makes me feel good, so maybe!?!

nuttygirl · 14/02/2009 21:04

LFS - yeah, a lot of money but the relief was unbelievable - I talked about what happened at my previous birth and everything the IM said was just what I wanted to hear and I know I've made the right decision. I'm self employed (with an online business) so was planning on just having a few weeks off but am now gonna take the whole lot and dh is going to work voluntarily for me iyswim as the extra Maternity Allowance will pay for the IM. Great that yours has their own pool. I'm planning on buying the mini birth pool in a box (the regular is a bit big) but it's yet another expense. Saw one with extras on ebay and it went for £105 - it was only £125 new and I think you'd have had to buy a new liner anyway as the listing didn't say it had a liner.

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 21:16

Crysanthemum, you should be asking for a home birth as well then!!! >

LittleFairySmile that makes me feel so much better!!! I took back the size 14 and cam out with a size 20 in the jeans and an 18 in the trousers !!!! They were £7 and £5 respectively so I don't mind too much!!!

How much is an IM if you don't mind me asking?

!!!

olivo · 15/02/2009 07:14

morning, everyone! taken ages to catch up after even just a couple of days away from my pc!

sorry to hear people are being denied/not offered scans at 20 weeks. that's the only thing that kept me sane last time, i hope yuo manage to wangle them somehow. i am still waiting for my first scan but only 5 days to go. thanks for those who reassured me and keep your fingers crossed for me on friday.

I'm on holiday now for a week, but can see myself using it to catch up on sleep while dd is at nursery, i'm exhausted. Waking in the night to go to the loo and not going back to sleep, then dd waking early again. Have left her and dh taking up all the bed, both snoring, i've given up!

still thinking i can feel movement, it's really weird.

ScummyMummy · 15/02/2009 07:53

Very shocked to hear of so many not being offered 20 week scans too. It's been absolutely routine down here in London for years and years- my twins are nearly 10 and it was routine when they were in utero. We had loads of scans with them, actually. Lots of checking what kind of twins they were (non-identical) and monitoring their growth and postion. I'm looking forward to hearing about Ready and Valz's twin pregnancies.Brings back nice memories. Crap that there's such a postcode lottery re scans, really.

I've been almost forgetting that I'm pregnant over the past day or so. My Father in law was staying with us and was rushed to hospital with possible heart attack/bad angina so all the focus has been on him, really. He seems to be ok, thank goodness, but they are waiting on the results of a few tests before they decide what the care plan is in terms of him staying in for a while or being discharged.

VJay · 15/02/2009 09:51

Hope your FIL is ok scummymummy.

It is such a postcode lottery re scans, and a lot of things really, it's crap. I come from Cheshire and ds was born there and 20 week scans were and still are the norm, so I do find it weird I can't get one up here. I have shared MW and doctor care, so I am going to beg my GP next, I hate begging, but this is what it's driven me too. Dh says just go for the private scan, but I will try just one last time.

cairns · 15/02/2009 12:21

I do think it is rather odd this lottery on what scans you get based on where you live. I didn't know that was the case and it is not very well publicised how much a lottery it is which is awful too. 20wk scan is the norm here as is a nuchal at 11-13wks so I do consider myself very lucky. The 20wk scan is considered the more important one due to the anomoly checking and more importantly it assesses where your placenta should be. A friend of mine was found to have a low lying one and then was sent for more scans at a later date as would be dangerous for her during the birth.. in the end it didn't move and she had to have a c section... I don't know how they would detect that without a 20 wk scan as well as any other potential complications with the baby that might need special monitoring... awful that you don;t get it... I would push and push for it (but easier said than done)

summymummy hope FIL is feeling better and results come back OK, that must have been an awful shock for you all

trixymalixy · 15/02/2009 12:36

scummymummy, I'm really sorry to hear about your FIL. I hope he'll be OK.

My friend's cousin's baby was born with her bowel outside of her stomach. They then had to both be rushed to Glasgow as an emergency. Had she had a 20 week scan they would have noticed this and she would have never have had a natural birth and would have been offered a C-section or they could have operated in-utero.

Thankfully the baby survived, but it was touch and go.

It's stories like that that made me pay for a private scan last time.

2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven · 15/02/2009 14:05

Hi everyone. Hope you had good valentine's weekends. I too am x10 about people not being offered 20 week scans. I too thought it was the norm as it is when the anamoly checks happen. Personally I would have one even if it meant a fight/going private.

Speaking of 20 week scans, I've had a rather upsetting week here - 1 of my closest friends who is about 6 weeks further on than me had a bad 20 week scan where her baby was shown to have severe brain damage. She and her DH have decided to terminate the pregnancy but she has had to deliver the baby (yesterday) due to how many weeks she is. She is, understandably, devasted and in pieces. She already has a DS (2.7). I am just so very for her having to go through something like this. It is extremely rare that these things happen and she is desperately unlucky. Makes me count my blessings though.

Nutty - am very impressed with your dd. Girls do tend to be ready sooner than boys but under 2 is great. She will be at the stage of not really having accidents anymore by the time this one arrives which will make life much easier. DS1 was out of nappies within a month of turning 2 but I had 9 weeks of 2 in nappies - plenty long enough! I can't see DS2 being ready as early as DS1 although he is obsessed with the loo and always accompanies DS1!

Um not much else to say - no movement here but baby has got to kick hard through plenty of fat first! I didn't feel DS1 til around 22 weeks, DS2 was more like 18 weeks. So I'm too in that funny space of not feling pg anymore!! my rounded belly confirms it though!

DH has gone out for a run, DS2 is asleep and DS1 is painting - will need to rescue him soon as he's busy mixing all the paints and his cup of water together in a big mess...

kitkatqueen · 15/02/2009 14:45

Hiya, I am in Norfolk and while we get a 20 week scan we have to pay for a nuchal scan if we want one. From memory its about £150.00 - £200.00 which to me says more than postcode lottery but earning related lottery too. My sister is in London and she had automatic nuchal scans with all 3 babies going back to 2003.

I can honestly say that if I was living in scotland I would definatley say that I wanted a homebirth if it meant I got a 20 week scan. I don't think its reasonable to not have an anomaly scan at that stage.

Scummy, all good thoughts being sent to your FIL.

Hiya to all those who haven't posted for a while, hope you all had a lovely valentines and are all doing ok..

OonaghBhuna · 15/02/2009 17:56

I have a freind who lives in Glasgow and when she was pregnant last year I found out that she would not be offered a 20week scan. I was shocked and still am its disgraceful. She was a first timer so really she didnt know what the norm was. Eventually with alot of persuasion she paid for a 20 week scan.

I live in N.Ireland we still have a 20 week scan but they are cutting down on the amount of scans we have. I have to admit that I have gone privately with the last two pregnancies and am with this one.

Scrummy sorry to hear about your FIL.

Have felt sick and have been wretching all day.
