scrummy hope your FIL is better soon

Great to hear that nutty and littlefairysmile are going the IM route and I really hope it gets you both the birth you want - will be worth every penny. But I am about realising what a difference it makes where you live, like with the scans. I am in a pretty similar position and yet my community midwives are totally behind a home birth - really, why should some people have to pay for what others get free on the NHS?

And to whoever it was who recommended the Spatone - THANK YOU!! I knew I was low on iron and trying to eat more food with iron in wasn't working but that stuff is amazing, what a difference. Quite tasty too in a wierd kind of way (or maybe I've got that pregnancy thing, what's it called, where women want to lick coal or something )

OonaghBhuna · 15/02/2009 19:31

Nellyup- spa tone is amazing stuff.I have been using it for years now.Even when I am not pregnant! I get really weak when I menstruate and since discovering spa tone it has made such a difference!

I just want to stop wretching....feeling sorry for myself today even though it was warmer the sun was shining and we had a lovely day with the kids.

LittleFairySmile · 15/02/2009 20:01

Hi all, just a few comments to add

Trixy As Nuttygirl said prices vary, there is a website to find out your local IM, but they are VERY flexible on payment.

Olivo I know I can feel movement, it's great. Just tiny little tickles at the mo'. DH is jealous!

Scummymummy sorry to hear about FIL, hope he's OK.

2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven your poor friend, I cannot imagine how she must be feeling.

Nellyup there was no way I was getting a HB with my community midwives. The best response I got was raised eyebrows from one, and another held her hands in the air and said ?I?m not even going there? and did a dismissive gesture with her hands, like a wave (not swearing, IYSWIM!). That, and talking to a couple of IM, made me realise I had to find a way to relax this pregnancy or it would all end up going wrong for certain. I at least know now that if things go wrong and intervention is necessary, it will be truly an emergency and not because of nervous or time-pressed NHS staff. I have every sympathy with those people who are run off their feet and over-worked, but it shouldn?t be my problem, and I shouldn?t have to pay out really. DH and I have paid enough taxes over the years!

Hawkmoth · 15/02/2009 20:10

First thing my MW said was "Are you having the baby at home or in hospital?". When I said, "er... at home" she said, "Fine. You'll be a low-risk pregnancy then."

I read in the paper a letter not long ago that someone was in early labour and the MW team said it could be busy at the hospital but there were community MWs free so why not have it at home!

I know that the aim is for every woman to have the birth she wants where she wants, but funding (bad) and personalities (worse) get in the way.

nuttygirl · 15/02/2009 21:00

ScummyMummy - sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope he's ok.

Should perhaps point out that my community mw seemed supportive of a homebirth but there's been a policy change in my area. They are trying to increase the number of homebirths and to facilitate that they are now assigning hospital mw's to homebirths - I felt uncomfortable with that because I don't think they view homebirths in the same way as a community mw. It also meant there was a chance of me getting the mw I had for my last birth. I also started to realise I didn't trust them (don't see why they should HAVE to discuss the risks of homebirth with me but not the risks of a hospital birth) and I was starting to get a bit obsessed with controlling everything. With the IM I felt that I could trust what she was telling me and make my own informed decision iyswim.

MichaelaS · 16/02/2009 00:20

Hi all, i've been lurking for a while because i've been so tired and haven't really managed to read all the posts then write one of my own... but here I am.

I had my 12 week scan, when I was 13+1 by dates, but they have put me back a week which wasn't too much of a suprise as I know I ovulated fairly late, day 20ish rather than day 14. So, today I'm 13+3, and since the scan went well we have started telling people. It feels very strange after all the secrecy.

Is anyone else feeling very strange telling people, I keep thinking something is bound to go wrong now. I'm really looking forward to getting a bump and feeling the baby move, then I might believe it is actually happening. i am just telling myself that in only 3 months from now I could have an early baby with a fairly good chance of survival. 3 months feels a lot closer than 6 months. Obviously I hope it will all go well and i'll go to term, but my head is doing strange things. Anyone else thing they're going mental?

ScummyMummy · 16/02/2009 09:54

Thank you very much for all the good wishes for my father-in-law. He's doing ok, I think. They have discovered from his blood test that it was a heart attack, unfortunately, so they will need to decide what to do about checking out and repairing any damage today. However, he seems chirpy, is not in much pain at all and is looking pretty much as well as can be expected. I am reassured by his impatience to get out of hospital.

He's an inpatient in the same hospital I'll be delivering this baby in and I've been impressed by how lovely the staff have been. I know there are no guarantees that this loveliness will cross over into the maternity department but I am hopeful nonetheless! Have been feeling a few movements from the bairn- I think it's trying to remind me it's there!

Hi Michaela. I think your feelings are SOOOO normal! It's more weird not to feel fatalistic and ambivalent at times than the reverse, ime.

trixymalixy · 16/02/2009 10:13

I'm the same MichaelaS.

I had my 15 week checkup last week and was shocked that there was a heartbeat there. I maybe will feel different once I have more of a bump and have felt some movement, but at the moment I just feel that something is going to go wrong.

Rachel1963 · 16/02/2009 10:58

Me too Michaela and trixy. Am convinced it's all going to go wrong and really want to feel some movement. Have got next ante-natal appointment in 2 weeks and am preparing myself to be told there's no hb. Feel like I don't really dare relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

VJay · 16/02/2009 12:03

oh I feel the same, it's pants, but then I start to feel so tired in the afternoon so that's a bit reassuring. I just wish this little bean would give me a sign, you know, a tickle or something to let me know all is well.
I've just booked my 15+ week appointment today on the 10th March, that's when I'll get my AFP test done. A bit nervous, but just need to get on with it.

HeinzSight · 16/02/2009 12:36

MichaelaS, dreams can make you worry can't they, I won't tell you all the dream I had last night, but needless to say it was involving my pregnancy adn it was HORRID.

My friend is still in hospital, I went to visit her on Thursday, she looks amazing, she had a cardiac arrest and her husband was JUST BRILLIANT. Having had NO first aid training, he managed to perform CPR on her just by the instructions from the phone operator! She's hoping to be allowed home later this week, she'll need lots of support when she gets home, she was VERY lucky indeed.

DH is now 3 weeks into his redundancy, unfortunately he was really ill last week. I'm REALLY hoping I don't get it too, not sure how long the incubation period is likely to be

I must get my bum in gear and book my 16 week antenatal appointment, my midwife is prob all booked up for next Fri, so it'll more than likely be 17 wks.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Congrats on the twins by the way!!!!!!!!!!

MichaelaS · 16/02/2009 13:01

scrummymummy sorry your dad had a heart attack, but it does seem like a good sign he is impatient and wants to get out. hope he recovers fully and really quickly

everyone else - so glad i'm not the only one going mad! if i'm not the only one then it's probably normal to feel like that sometimes. phew, not as crazy as I had feared!

thoughtforms · 16/02/2009 17:28

well, I went in for my 12 week scan today, without a full enough bladder (not through lack of trying, either), so I had three scans in total - and by the time they could get through my blubber to get a good picture, the baby decided to fall asleep facing the ultrasound area (it was jumping around all over the place the first two times). Despite prodding and coughing and wobbling, it wouldn't move!!

So I've got to go back tomorrow for my Nuchal Scan (and my blood tests, because I haven't been booked in yet). I'm drinking a gallon of water beforehand, let me tell you. Bah.

Still, almost there... and I've got a picture of baby now!

Mellin · 16/02/2009 17:40

Hi all,

I've been offline for over a week and have been trying to catch up on recent posts. We had a scare last week as DD (2.3) developed a nasty strep infection from her chicken pox and was admitted to hospital for 4 days. She was on iv antibotics and fluids and was constantly feverish. It was a scarey time but thankfully the antibiotics worked their magic and she was discharged on Friday. She has recovered in leaps and bounds and it almost back to her normal cheery self.

scummymummy - sorry to hear about your FIL, hope he recovers soon. I know what you mean about forgetting you are pregnant,
it is the last thing on my mind at the moment.
nuttygirl - you are going to have to give me some tips about potty training, sounds like your experience has been a success! I keep thinking that I must get potty training with DD sorted before the baby comes. She has a potty and will sit on it for the occassional wee or poo, time to get serious soon methinks.

nuttygirl · 16/02/2009 18:00

Mellin - glad your dd is getting better.

Wish I had some potty training tips but dd has done it all herself tbh. She's now wanting to go nappy-less at night (has been dry for about 3 nights) . I don't want to say bye to my fluffy nappies yet

LittleFairySmile · 16/02/2009 19:15

Nuttygirl, we share a passion for fluffy nappies too, as well as our view on controling midwives ;)

BabyBump2B · 16/02/2009 19:50

Hi all!

Been hiding away because of horrid migraines and headaches. Had to page the emergency mid-wife last night because I had maxed out all the tylenol I can take and was still in excrutiating pain. She let me take some ibuprofen but now I need to get a script from Dr for proper drugs. I'm really worried about what it might do to the baby. I've had 2 migraines in 4 days and almost a headache every other day.

Scummy Mummy - hope your FIL recovers quickly

2Hotcrossbuns - I'm so sorry about your friend. How terrible.

Heinzsight - I'm glad your friend is ok. DH is now on week 3 of unemployment too but I've got him building me a nice big deck to keep him busy

Welcome to all the newbies!

2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven · 16/02/2009 19:53

Nutty - go for it! DS1 is very attached to his bedtime nappy at 3.8. I fear we may have missed the window. Boo hoo. DH is keen for him to be dry at night but I guess he will be ready when he's ready.

Are we supposed to have a check up at 16 weeks? I am 17 weeks tomorrow and have no appointment booked. I have shared care with community widwives and gp practice so maybe I'm supposed to be making an appointment with the gp? I guess I ought to dig my maternity notes out from wherever they are hiding... poor neglected 3rd child already

ScummyMummy · 16/02/2009 20:08

I was wondering about that too, 2hcb. I have a feeling I was supposed to book a 16 week appointment with the midwife attached to our GP surgery but she only takes bookings 1 month in advance, apparently, so I guess I'll be seeing her at 19 or 20 weeks if i remember to call her tomorrow.

Poor you, baby2b. I have a slight headache today and it's making me feel slightly irritable so I can't imagine how full blown migraines must be making you feel. I would be v surprised if they let you take anything that would harm your baby- please don't worry on that score.

Thanks again for all the good wishes for fil. They're still deciding what to do next as unfortunately the angiogram revealed damage to his heart. They think a bypass might be his best bet but he'll see the consultant tomorrow to decide. Poor guy- he had a triple bypass about 7 years ago and found the recovery period hard so I think he'll be shaken up at the idea of another one.

Thank goodness your daughter is ok, Mellin.

nuttygirl · 16/02/2009 20:18

sorry to hear about the headaches. I had them the other week but found taking spatone for a couple of days helped. I put it down to having been ill so much in Jan.

2HCB - according to the Antenatal Care Pathway I was given at my booking in appointment there's a 16 week appointment.

nellyup · 16/02/2009 20:22

2hcb your post made me laugh - I'm so like that this time round (my 3rd too). I did make an appointment for 16 weeks as I vaguely remembered the booking midwife saying to come then. Dug the notes out from underneath the pile of yellow pages and then she gave me a slight frown when she got her wheel out and said 'but you're nearly 18 weeks' - I was like 'yeah, well, whatever, close enough'. I would have been horrified at that with my first!

My dd was attached to her bedtime nappy too - didn't get rid of it until she was 4.5. In fact it was only because her little brother was dry first that she did it at all. I am so not looking forward to going back to nappies again, and not sure what to do this time as we used a nappy laundry service until my ds was about 18 months when it suddenly went bankrupt leaving us with two bags of stinking nappies on the doorstep to deal with. Luckily I was brave and washed them all so we have a huge stack of toddler sized ones but no baby ones. Will have to invest in new ones but seems a bit daft for just one baby (because this is defintely the last!).

OonaghBhuna · 16/02/2009 20:32

Well since we are talking about toilet training. My dd1 who is 3.5 was great with the tt apart from poo. Up until yesterday she has required a nappy and a curtain so she can do it in peace Yesterday I persuaded her to use the big toilet and she finally agreed to try and we had success she did it and boy was she proud of herself!!! We were all thrilled! Umm I dont think we will ever get out of the nightime nappies

Mellin: Glad your daughter is ok. Chickenpox is awful both Dds had it last year and were really ill. I was shocked at how bad it really is, so many people say that its fine once they get the spots...

rightbobbydazzler · 16/02/2009 21:53

hello everyone had my 12 week scan just 45 mins ago (yep 9pm scan!!!) all looks well. so have happily joined august 09 ners.
3rd little one youngest just 6 months old so HUGE shock. thinking about getting my head around it at some point and thought this would be a good place to start :-)

Welcome Rightbobbydazzer!

valz · 17/02/2009 10:36

hi ladies

im 14 weeks now and i thought my ms would have completely gone by now and just when i thought it was easing off i start feeling like shit again, all day yesterday i threw up almost everything i ate, then took a slice of toast about 1/2 hr before going to bed to keep the hunger/sickness away, as soon as i got into bed the belly started rumbling so i ended up eating cream crackers to stop it long enough to get to sleep, then this morning had tea and toast but the stomach is still turning, now i feel like its gonna start rumbling again. has anyone else still got or had their ms at this stage and at what point did it go and what about the constant hunger, is that gonna stick with me the whole way through? Also ive had some aching in my lower back, is that my insides just stretching or what, i havent any weight on yet from all the sickness so its not that?
