Morning all from snowy Wilthsire

Just checking in quickly ( i am at home ) before i have to go back in tonight. Wanted to say congratulations to Mamagoose, Swampy, NKweto and to MS on the arrivals of their gorgeous babies, cannot wait to see photos and am literally champing at the bit to see my lo tomorrow - I think thats the babies up to date so far but good luck to anyone who is waiting .

IDBI am sorry to read about Freyas talipes problem bless her, i remember being in tears because my DD1 had terrible conjunctivitus a day or so old and that was treatable really quickly. It is hard when you have such tiny little ones that you love so much going through hard things and i really do feel for you Hope you are feeling a bit better about it all today though or perhaps not better but a bit stronger anyway and that is great news that there are no other problems too.

Absolute nightmare at the hosptial. They put me on half the dose of insulin i was on as they were worried about the baby and my placenta deteriorating and thats why my requirement had gone down but kept me in a room monitoring my own blood sugars and not seeing a doctor or anything. Anyway i had to see my consultant yesterday and my obstetrician together at their clinic just off the ward and argued my case for going home. The diabetic consultant agreed i could monitor the last 24 hours at home myself but the bloody obs ( she has always pissed me off right from when she told me at 14 weeks that i was 10 times more likely to die from a c section great bedside manner!) said that my blood pressure was in the 90's and she wouldnt be happy to let me go home on that. I pointed out to her that i was very stressed and wound up about our meeting and that my bp the day before and indeed the entire time before our meeting was fine and she just said yes well thats not today is it? Grrrrrrr am SO glad i never have to see her again. Anyway, i knew id be happier spending my last night at home and there was no medical reason that i had to stay in - as i knew my blood pressure would come down as soon as i calmed down (its not like it was consistently high as im on methyldope) so i discharged myself (sticks tounge out at obs emotion). Had a lovely night last night at home with curry and shameless on catchup tv so am all ready for my adventure to begin tonight.

Pink, i am keeping my fingers crossed that you will go in to labour before the weekend is out as i know you dont want to go the induction route - sending good labour vibes your way!

FGPL good luck for your cs today

Well i am going to have a lovely day with the girls and DH, its soooo snowy out there and they have a snow day - DD1 has college this afternoon but only one lecture so we are going to enjoy building snowmen and generally having a good time - it will be fun to show the baby when hes older how much snow fell the day before he was born - there is literally loads here!

Hope everyone else is ok - will post sporadically through the day today and use DH's iphone tommorow to let you all know when the deed is done good luck to everyone!

lardybump · 05/02/2009 08:22

Good luck RP and FGPL....

I get my results today from the swab so hope they are not too bad.... so of you ladies having your babies I really want to meet mine.....

Going to start the cumin tea today so does anyone remember how much cumin i use???

rosieposey · 05/02/2009 08:57

Good luck for your results today lardy

McDreamy · 05/02/2009 09:17

Morning ladies! Lots of snow here and once again DD's school is shut. DH is away tonight and my parents were due to come over for the night incase anything kicks off but they can't get out of Wiltshire and DH has insisted that it is important he still goes away Feeling very uneasy about it. I know it's unlikely that anything will happen tonight - but what if it does?

I have no contigency plan, I don't know anyone in this area aaarrrggghhh! Trying to chill out and tell myself I am overreacting.

mumoverseas · 05/02/2009 09:18

rosie, at your obs consultant! what a thing to say!

survived shopping mall but wasn't in the mood for it. Mega sales in Debenhams, loads in sale and buy one get one free. Normally I'd be buying up everything but no energy so home and flopped on sofa. 70 hours and counting......

pluto · 05/02/2009 09:46

Blimey - you lot can talk AND have babies!!

Big congrats to MamaG, Swampy, Nkweto and MMarkstretch. As I said before - lucky you, it must be fab having your LOs - but it's making the still waiting list much too short and I'm now a terrible combo of nerves and excitement.

McDreamy - tell me about it. DH is going away tomorrow morning until Saturday 5pm. No real risk of snow, and it's only about 1hr 15mins to get back here if he needs to but....

IDBI. What an emotional rollercoaster you must be riding. I second everything everyone has already said and just want you to know that I'm thinking of you, your family and baby Freya.

FGPL good luck for today and Rosieposey same for tomorrow! MOS - how many hours now?

I had my last MW appt yesterday - next week I'll be having the baby so she doesn't need to see me again. I was 38 weeks yesterday but measured up as 41 / 42. Head is engaged. MW said to have my bag packed and possibly to expect to go into labour before CS date of next Friday. When I got home from seeing her I had all kinds of phantom labour symptoms - I had also felt weird on Saturday when I think the head was moving down, but I'm trying to take what MW said with a large amount of salt. I was 10 days late with DS and even though everyone says I look very big I think this is because I'm a small framed kinda girl. Anyway, MW said to call if my waters go or other labour symptoms start and they'll do an "elective" CS anyway. I really HAD better pack my bag. I just can't quite face that yet though. Surely I'm not really going to have a baby and I'll wake up from this dream soon

lardybump · 05/02/2009 10:02

Pluto are you going to PH?

mumoverseas · 05/02/2009 10:08

FGPL, good luck for today, sorry missed that one earlier

Pluto, 69 hours, depending whether they are on UK time or Saudi time. (Saudi time everything is 'insha'allah' = godwilling (therefore maybe, perhaps) so perhaps 69 hours, perhaps 70,71,72,73..... get the picture?
I'd better pack my bag too. I started a few weeks ago but it didn't really seem real then but now babies are arriving every day it makes it more real.

pluto · 05/02/2009 10:15

Lardybump - yes - if PH stands for the one that's a buiding site!

spottyshoes · 05/02/2009 10:17

Goodluck everyone with imminent CS's. Hope the snow doesn't hinder you - not you MOS of course, Mrs-25-degrees

It's nearly a foot deep in places here and still coming down. Helpfully they have decided to shut 2 major roads in the city. There have been 3 accidents outside our house so far this morning - so glad I'm on lockdown Been out with DS for a walk already, just in the garden and the field across the road, so funny as the snow is as deep as his legs Just having a biscuit and drink and off for a splashy bath together to warm up!

spottyshoes · 05/02/2009 10:20

Lardy I started it yesterday and PT said about a tsp of cumin powder but seeds are better. I'm adding seeds to the online shopping order as they really cant be any worse Had 2 cups yesterday p.m and made a cup this morning and the smell made my stomach churn. I dont think I'll ever use it in cooking again once this baby is out!

jenniferturkington · 05/02/2009 10:23

hi everyone, congratulations on all the babies so far! It's ages since I posted but I enjoy a good lurk
My baby seems happy to stay put at the moment (due next Wed) although my sleeping is so bad I'm more than ready for her to arrive now.
IDBI please CAT me or facebook me (I'm in the group but don't think I'm actually anyone's friend IYSWIM). DS was born with bilateral talipes 20 months ago. It was undiagnosed antenatally so was a big shock at the time, he is doing great now and I would love to tell you all about our experiences...Freya will be just fine

Now I just need to hope they come and un-clamp my car before I go in to labour.

mumoverseas · 05/02/2009 10:29

spotty, we'll probably have a sandstorm at 7am on Sunday morning We've had quite a few bad sandstorms the last few years but at least they are a bit warmer than snowstorms!

hi jennifer, welcome back. Hope your experience with your DS will provide IDBI with some support and reassurance. We are all so good at providing hugs but no experience in this area

lardybump · 05/02/2009 10:46

Pluto that is where I am going as well... Maybe I will see you there????? (Wishful thinking on my behalf I think.....)

SS I think I will wait and get some seeds today then as I only have the powder....

Jennifer welcome back, glad your ds is ok now. As I said to IDBI my mum has a club foot now and has had to live with it as they didn't repair it in her day but now I know they work miracles. There is a risk that any children I have may have it as it seems to have skipped a generation. My uncle has a hunch back as well so there are well know bone deformities on my mum?s side. DD was born without a soft spot and her head was not symmetric, after many months of hospital visits and worry she was fine....... They were worried about fluid on her brain though due to the large head she had....

pluto · 05/02/2009 10:49

OK - I have a question about nursing bras. Before I go and pack my bag do you think I realy need to go and buy a couple or do you reckon I can get away with nursing vests until milk comes in, I get out of hospital and boobs "settle down" to the size they are likely to remain at while I'm BFing? Nursing bras are so expensive I think vests is the route I'm going to go down. Someone recommended the budget bumps website which is really good but the cheapy ex-George at ASDA ones aren't available in my size, our local H&M doesn't have any nursing vests in stock at the moment and I think the Jojomaman shop in our town has them but they're a bit of a rip off as well. Do any of you know of anywhere that stocks cheapish nursing vests? Also, can anyone remind me how much milk leakage I can expect in the first few days? I really don't want to pack a load of breast pads that I'm not likely to need until milk starts flowing. I seem to remember not really needing them until express dairies really opened up after a few days! All this mumsnetting is procrastination btw - I really should go and pack my bag

lardybump · 05/02/2009 10:56

I am using my old nursing bras (even though I think they are way too small) while in hospital and going to get measured when milk comes in.... I think M&S do vests or did I just make that up????

I am taking 14 pads into hospital with me dp can always bring me more if I have to stay in any longer..

pluto · 05/02/2009 10:58

Lardybump - your due date is about 10 days after the date booked for my CS - but you never know. I will be packing my flip flops for the bathroom and antiseptic wipes this time for PH - but I'm sure they have cleaned up their act since DS was born there 9 years ago, and the MWs are so lovely. I wonder what the new maternity facilities will be like there when the new hospital opens.

ihavenewsockson · 05/02/2009 11:00

Hey pluto
I got a couple of nursing bras off eBay last time, they are quite stretchy so don't panic too much.
I found that the difference wasn't so much in cup size but in back size so do measure first.

I found the first few days not much leakage at all until the milk came in on day three. made sure I fed my DS every 3 hours the first three days and the engorgement was not painful- it felt tight and full but not 'cabbage-leaf-down-your-bra' kind of painful.

I'm glad someone else hasn't packed their bag yet! DH keeps on at me to get it done, I went 10 days over last time so i think I'm putting it off cos of that.

lardybump · 05/02/2009 11:02

I had dd there in 2007 and it was lovely. Staff were so nice and the labour wards were so clean. The showers in the ward were a bit old and dated but apart from that i had a really good experiance there.

My sister had her son 3 months later at MH and he got MRSA. Not nice at all and has put me off which is why i chose PH this time around even though i am closer to MH...

I am sure MH is better now as this was almost 2 years ago but these things stick with you dont they....

Going to talk induction with the midwife today so you never know I may get to meet my baby early....

catstar · 05/02/2009 11:03

Missed Mamagoose's great news yesterday - congratulations and well done on the water birth!

IDBI - sorry to hear about Freya's diagnosis and hope you can get some comfort from others who have been through it.

Lardy - I have used your hospital bag list as a check list for mine and glad to say I have an identical bag! Have now added some wipes, Lansinoh and a camera and at last feel prepared . Spotty - I love the contribution of a thong and panyliners by your DH!!!

MOS - I think you asked about pressies from DH's/DP's, well, I got a big, fat nothing but I don't think I was alone amongst my friends etc. Except one that got a 4 figure Tiffany necklace . We're very strapped for cash at the moment and I think it would have to be something very special and thoughtful to mean something. As DH doesn't do special and thoughful, I sort of knew it was a no-go .

Then there's McDreamy's DH the other day - they do exist these men!!!

Right, just put my waterproof sheet on the bed (my waters were the first thing to go with DD) now off to get bikini line waxed and buy some fresh fruit and veg if local shops have had any deliveries. Bin men seem to be venturing out today so better get the bins out too.

Looking forward to more exciting news from everyone.

catstar · 05/02/2009 11:04

Rosie - have a lovely day out in the snow and good luck for tomorrow!

ihavenewsockson · 05/02/2009 11:06

re: hospital bag- bottle of water was a life saver for me. i found every time i pushed i was so thirsty and the next day i swelled up like a balloon cos of water retention so swigging lots of water helped. (also makes sure your wee isn't too concentrated and stings your stitches)

how's everyone doing with their birth plans?
i haven't done one yet.
got MW this afternoon- 37 week appointment. do they go weekly now?

nkweto · 05/02/2009 11:19

IDBI ... I know it must be scary and upsetting to consider your DD in plaster.. but I hope you can take comfort in the fact
that she won't remember in the long run.. hope you feel better soon.

Rosie, what a rubbish consultant.. good luck for tomorrow

FGPL.... good luck !

McDreamy.. do you have any good friends you can have on call 'just in case' ?

Thank you for all your congratulations, very much appreciated !
Quick summary of birth story whilst DD sleeps and cBeebies entertain DS ! It is too long.. sorry

In retrospect, I might have had some sense that something was happening on Tuesday.. but had put it down to the monster
walk the day before. I was just pottering doing some tidying up, cooking tea etc, but every so often would feel
quite woozy and had to lie down for 15/30 minutes before continuing.

We all sat down for dinner at 7pm when 'pop' and my waters broke.. which was a bit of a surprise to me, as my waters had
broken 20 hours into labout last time! I had no contractions, so we just started to prepare but with no real urgency. I showered,
we gave DS his bath and put him to bed (assuming that it would be many hours before we would take him to my aunties, tidied up and
checked our bags.

We rang the Doula (a last minute addition to our birth plan, when our childcare had looked at risk due to illness last week), and she said
she would come over, it was fantastic having her there switching all the lights off and creating a really calm safe envrionment for
both DH and I. We rang the birth centre who told us that due to the snow issues, they only had one midwife on, and
she was with a woman in transistion so to try the delivery centre. I resigned myself to not getting the birth centre labour and
thought no more about it.

Contractions started around 8pm and got regular about 9pm, with the Doula arriving at 9.30. I was able to manage the contraction pain
with breathing and rocking on my hands and knees (...and the assumption that much worse contractions were on their way!), so we decided to hold off a bit as we didnt want to spend hours in the
delivery centre. About 40 minutes later we realised that the contractions were really regular (every two and half minutes),
and were actually lasting over a minute... we were just debating ringing the taxi when I threw up everyway and growled (quite
literally..) " We need to go NOW"....

DH called two taxis, and suddenly realising that I would have to go outside and manage a car journey, I was not able to manage the
contraction pain... when the taxi driver rang the door bell.. I tried to crawl away, wailing as now contractions were now
crashing into each other like waves, with no discernable break inbetween. However, Doula and DH managed to
get me into the taxi (unfortunately with my holding my phone.. which of course got lost in the taxi !). DH got DS into taxi 1 and off they
went to my aunties, and Doula and I headed off to the hospital. I was now completely unable to control the contradictions.. and I
suspect the taxi driver drove really quickly.. but I remember little of it beyond me going 'I can't do this' and writhing about.

By the time we got to the hospital.. my mantra was now 'I need to poo.... ' yep.. I was good to go. Doula had to stop me trying
to get down on my hands and knees outside the lift to go up! What I hadn't realised was that when DH had rang the taxi's he
had also rang the birth centre, just in case. The other woman had just given birth, and the last spot on the birth centre had freed
up! So Doula managed to guide my truly undignified entrance into the hospital straight into the most beautiful birth centre
room I have ever seen (not that i have seen many...). There was a mat set up with two huge bean bags all covered in sheets, and
I just dived headfirst onto them and got on all fours. All I remember hearing was the lovely midwife saying ' you can push now
sweetie..' and I did and it was simply blissful!

Again, I was preparing myself for a lot more pain, but this is the wierdest thing.. the next 35 minutes did not hurt at all..
DH arrived 10 minutes into pushing and baby girl was born gently over that period.. I could not believe it, and still don't
quite understand what happened (but am not complaining !).

Once she was born the Doula and Midwife were silent, and we talked to her softly and then DH was invited to cut her cord.
It was all so calm and peaceful, I really couldnt get over it. There was a water pool in the room, so the midwife then invited me
to take DD into the pool.. which again was fantastic and DH, DD and I were able to sleep over in the same room until the next day,
which was again so different from being put on a ward and DH being sent home..

We are all very happy, DS is lovely with DD and keeps trying to hug and kiss her! DH brought him to the hospital to meet her,
and he seemed very happy and unsurprised.. so it does look he did understand all the 'baby' discussions !

MamaGoose · 05/02/2009 11:22

Thanks all for lovely messages. We haven't actually given her a name yet. Like to think about these things for a while!

IDBI thoughts are with you re. Freya's foot. Must be stressful.

Good luck to those with imminent CS's. Hope your consultant behaves himself mumoverseas and doesn't try a last minute rip off.

spottyshoes · 05/02/2009 11:28

That's so beautiful Nkweto. Quite a story!
