lauraloo09 · 17/02/2009 13:27

june Haven't had the chance to meet my GP as there is at least 1 week waiting time for an appointment. I have an antenatal appointment on Friday so think I will mention it to the GP, regardless of how I feel tomorrow I'll be going to work, although I have had fun looking at stuff for baby online

Been looking at combinaton car seats, what do you guys think of this

LittleSarah · 17/02/2009 13:33

laura and tee - my dh felt baby at 19 weeks. I remember lying on the bed after a bath with my hand on lower tummy and being sure I could feel it outside as well as in so called him through. Was really surprised it was so early though but he feels a lot now (24 weeks).

By the way, is anyone leaking already?! Breast milk? I didn't last time and it seems to happening a fair bit now, argh. Luckily usually just when I'm in bed. Honestly the other night when dh moved I thought he was hot and sweaty and then I realised I had caused the wet patch.

ermintrude - I think if I definitely go for the shower I shall say only one present required or something to make sure!

Congrats Ineed!

Also, people definitely seem to think I should want a boy now. My brother and grandpa both said something along the lines of, let's hope for a boy this time eh... EH??

But people can be very rude, one of the names we like - Alexander - has already been derided by two my friends. One because Alexander is little pompous, and the other simply said, oh yes but then he might get called Alex. Um yes, I like Alex too.
Honestly, I don't know if I'll be telling people anymore, surely once born there won't be so much 'honesty'. I realise not everyone will like my names but I would think as it is quite a big decision people would have some tact. My cousin has mentioned a girl's name I am unsure of but she loves it and I would never insult it because of that.

LittleSarah · 17/02/2009 13:48

daisy - Fraser is really nice. Must keep thinking about ours...

lauraloo09 · 17/02/2009 13:52

quick question...if you guys had the money to buy your pram would you do it now or keep the money in a savings account until nearer the time?

See this is why I need back to work, I keep thinking about stuff

June2009 · 17/02/2009 15:56

littlesarah I'm with you with being wary of sharing the names on our shortlist with people. We made the mistake of saying we liked "Lilly" to my SIL and she wailed "Nooooooooooooooooooo, she'll be called "Lilly Willy" at school!". (The school where she works is really rough).
Dh has really gone off that name now.
When I mentionned I liked "Calypso" I was told "oh no it's a brand name" by a friend of mine. But, it was an actual name before it was a brand name and it's pretty and I like it!!!
Plus there are loads of nice decent names that are also a brand name or something or can be laughable when shortened ("Megane", "Anya", "Allegra", "Dick"...), and who's to say the one you choose doesn't become a brand name next year.

One of my best friend called her little boy "Gaspard" which is quite an old fashioned name in France, I thought it was a bit of a weird choice of name at first but I quickly got used to it and now I also think it's a brilliant name and it suits him so well.

I often have a look at the baby names thread for inspiration but I haven't dared starting a post there :D

June2009 · 17/02/2009 15:57

littlesarah and I love the name Alexander too

ermintrude13 · 17/02/2009 16:13

June and LittleSarah we've never mentioned any possible baby names to anyone, even close family, because somebody is bound to say something mean or negative about it. It'll rhyme with a rude word, or remind them of some public figure they detest, or it'll hit a nerve of prejudice for being too 'posh' or 'common'. My friend's mother even vetoed the name they'd chosen because she'd never liked a boy at school of the same name, 60 years ago! If you firmly announce the birth of little XYZ people have to say - how lovely! And then get used to it. The only things to look out for are acronyms eg. if your son was called Thomas Isaac Timpson his initials would be T.I.T. - but then he could always just be TT - Or the kind of Nora Bone/Annette Curtain type names, which I have come across in real life sometimes. Even then, Teresa Green sounds quite nice

So, it's good if you and DPs can agree on it yourselves - or try it out on MN and then you can always ignore the negatives and nobody will be offended . June it's also possible that you'll come up with a name and then decide it doesn't suit the baby, so it's good to have a couple of possibilities if poss.

(I like Alexander and Alex, and Lily is a gorgeous name, so sweet at all ages. My Matilda calls herself Tilly and yes indeed, sometimes children have rhymed it with willy, shock horror. She got over it!)

Oh, meant to say, Sainsbury's has a HALF PRICE SALE on loads of mother and baby stuff - breast pads, disposable knickers, maternity towels, baby bath things (own brand and the nice organic one they do), sponges, hairbrushes, all nappy creams, body lotions etc. I've just stocked up on a load of stuff.

Tee2072 · 17/02/2009 17:21

Man, why don't I have a Sainsbury's nearby?

Can anyone point me towards PJs? All my PJ tops are too small, bottoms are fine because they are drawstring. I usually buy them at Primark (I'm a cheapskate!) but all they have the ones with the shorts! Its not that warm yet people!

So if anyone has a source for cheap PJs, either maternity or regular send it my way!

ermintrude13 · 17/02/2009 17:37

Tee I have exactly the same problem - only v expensive ones online. I found some pretty maternity ones on Ebay which I 'won' and then the seller refunded because they'd all gone! All Mothercare and M&S ones are pink, which I never wear. At the mo I'm in huge white teeshirts and bikini pants at night. I'll keep searching and tell you if I find anything.

Has anyone else been offered Ocado's latest deal? You pay £8.95 per month so that you don't have to pay any delivery charges, and you get a free (usually £9.99) slot at Christmas. Which means you'd have to order from them every couple of weeks to 'save' the £5 delivery charge, which is already high. Hmmm. I think since I do have a car I'll be going to Sainsbo's/Asda depending on budget!

Juicygirlpink · 17/02/2009 17:39

Gals,

Thanks for all your kind words today feeling ok today haven't got time to catch up as running out to yoga, I will be on tomorrow x x

chocciedooby · 17/02/2009 20:38

Hi everyone.Just a quick me post I'm afraid.
My head cold is on its way out now (just left with a runny nose) but last night I woke at 1am with awful stomach pains and had to go sit on the toilet for a while. Sorry if tmi but had awful diarrhia .It took about 20 minutes for the pain to go and then all was ok and I got back to sleep. Have been fine all day today and took the kids on a long walk and bike ride. Now I am wondering if I am doing too much. All was well until I started to tidy up the kids toys. I think all the stretching and bending down is really hurting my stomach muscles this time around and I couldn't continue with tidying up so I went and put my feet up.

Anyway, I am very confused because now (after kids bedtime etc) I have all those stomach pains that I had in the night and I haven't eaten my dinner yet! Is anyone else getting a lot of muscular pain?
I think I may be suffering from a combination of that but also have a tummy bug.

Sorry - warned you it was a me post.

LittleSarah · 17/02/2009 20:41

tee - I just sleep naked so no PJs for me, although that may have to change with all the lactating!

(Btw, dh thought mentioning my sleeping status was a 'bit much' so I apologise if I have offended any sensibilities by admitting my nudity!)

June and ermintrude - glad to hear similar stories about the name issue. I think the telling no one is the way to go for me. I remember hearing about a girl who was call Ima June Bugg and didn't mind, she loved her dad's 'eccentricity'... I think that would be pushing my affection a little far!

Wracking my brain to work out if there is a decent Sainsburys near here.

laura - I would buy! Mainly because that is exactly what happened to us at Christmas and as we knew what buggy we wanted we went for it.

juicy - Hope all is well with you.

ermintrude13 · 17/02/2009 21:22

choccie sorry to hear you've got pains. Bike riding is OK if you're used to it pre-pregnancy but can be bad for loosening muscles in lower back/groin if you're not. And diarrhoea on top of that is just too much! Hope you have a comfy night and feel better tomorrow.

Ah LittleSarah, pre-DC I too slept nude - and we used to have lots of sex in those days. Hey, could the two facts be related? . Unrestrained milk leakage can certainly lend a cheesy taint to the bottom sheet, so you might have to buy a lovely big sleep bra to stick your breast pads in. Immediately post birth, with that and your disposable pants plus enormous sanitary towel you'll be ready for bed. Maybe time to start preparing DH for this now....? .

June2009 · 17/02/2009 22:06

hey littlesarah don't worry about TMI, from what I read on other threads about late pregnancy, labour etc we kinda need to get into that kind of details for reassurance and sanity's sake.
I sleep in the nude also most of the time, certainly do not own a nightie and also been looking for one for the birth.
Have you tried M&S Tee?

Hiya, got a question for you about clothing (was looking at car seats/prams/travel systems and decided it's too complicated for me, I moved on quickly onto clothing :D)

Are you guys buying clothes 0-3 months only right now or are you buying bigger clothes already in advance/ in case the baby is big or tall / because there isn't much time for shopping at 3 months?

I was told our baby girl is "tall", not quite sure what to make of that to be honest :S

Also I'm only buying babygros and vests at the moment, I've read a few times that it's all you really need at the start.
What do people mean by "the start"?

I wish we could rent a real baby somewhere so we can sort of get used to it and its needs We're the first ones of our mates to have one and I think it'll be a while until the next ones go for it.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 18/02/2009 06:26

Hey there everybody. Had a better night's sleep, despite DS having me up at 5.30, it's better than 3am....

June2009 We had a couple of packets of newborn babygros and vests and DS lived in these for the first 3 - 6 weeks (he was 7lb 8oz when he was born). They move up to 0 - 3 months pretty quickly. You also change their babygros at least twice a day because of poo leakage and posseting (baby sick)... after that we started putting him in little outfits, but that was because DS was born at Christmas and it was too bloody cold! I imagine our little bundles will be in vests and short sleeved things pretty soon as it's hopefully going to be hot!

Poor old you choccie it's so miserable when you have a tummy upset. Put your feet up and let your body recover (easier said than done, I know).

Just found out that a dear friend from school is moving down the road and I'm so excited!

We're off to Ikea tomorrow to kit out DS's new room. It's all painted now, so just needs some furniture! We're moving him into a big bed at the same time so it should be interesting....

Enjoy your day today everyone xx

Juicygirlpink · 18/02/2009 09:47

hey everyone,

Choccie/ June - thanks for the tips on baby clothes I have basically done what you suggested, we have bought 6 I think newborn then about 25 0-3 months but all very practical as well as cute . Think I have mentioned before that m&s have a great selection right now, £6 for 6! Cheaper than a pack of nickers!!! also I saw in pregnancy & birth mag sainsbury's have a new really cute collection of miffy babygro's in a cute lemon & baby green colour & they were cheap, I have sent my mil there as we don't have one near us. We know what we are having but I am still buying all colours!

Erm- thanks for practical info on what to expect after bday! I think it just kind of reminds us how we really only need & want nearest & dearest after the birth & not unwelcome guests!!!

We have a short list of names, I call baby one of them but we have told no-one! My mil said to dh give me the list & I will choose- WTF !? Think she was joking but not really! Am going to book our 3d today going to take their advice on when to have it I am 24 + 2 today. Does this sound awful? As mentioned we know what sex baby is & it is my dream!!! I was so overcome that I asked the sonographer at my 20 week to repeat it twice! But I will be happy to have it re- confirmed at the scan - is this really bad? Or just natural?
Off to dr today to have belly measured & blood pressure taken oh & to stock up on gaviscon! Had a nice time at yoga last night off to aqua tonight. Still have the swimsuit dilema so any advice would be much appreciated

Have a lovely day girls - nice & sunny in north london today x x

bigcar · 18/02/2009 10:56

Morning all

Choccie, hope everything settles down soon and you start to feel a bit better.

I think asdas are selling pjs as separates at the moment if that's any use to anyone. Will be off to sainsburys to check out the bargains, thanks for the tip!

June, 0-3 months will be fine, just avoid newborn if they think your lo will be tall. Dd3 (my biggest baby) was tall and 9lb 9ozs and 0-3 months lasted her about 10 weeks (none of mine have ever fitted in newborn size), by which time I really enjoyed the shopping trip to get new stuff . Newborns have such soft delicate skin, anything other than babygros always seem a bit harsh for the first few weeks. You'll probably find people will give/buy you loads when lo turns up, especially if you're the first to have a baby, just don't be afraid to ask them to buy the next size up if they want to buy something.

Juicygirlpink, have you managed to book your scan, sounds perfectly normal to me!

Ineed, enjoy your shopping trip, a big boy bed, how exciting!

Overcast in south west london this morning! Have a good day

ermintrude13 · 18/02/2009 11:13

June I agree with what others have said about sizes for baby clothes. You could always ask family/friends to buy actual outfits - as opposed to babygros - in 3-6 months size, bearing in mind what the season will be - because I found that even though 0-3 month outfits look adorable on the hanger, teeny babies just want to be snuggly and comfy in cotton sleepsuits, and trying to get trousers and tops or skirts and tights on a wee one is rather a waste of time - especially because they spend so much time curled up and the clothes just crumple. A few newborn in case you have a little one - or even an average sized baby for the first couple of weeks - are a good idea (scans aren't always 100% accurate and the growth rate can slow a little between now and birth) but the 0-3 will last at least 2-3 months unless you have a whopper!

I have a massive bag of babygros and all-in-one vests to wash from previous DC and my nieces, so shan't be buying anything - although actually I might just get one pack of brand new newborn suits in case it finds out what a cheapskate i've been in later life and gets traumatised .

Love the idea of renting a baby . Maybe i'll hire this one out to mums to be... and I bet some of your friends will be taking a close interet in yours

Juicy of course it's not bad to be excited about seeing a pic of your babe! Hope it poses for the camera. Keep your MIL away from that list

Ineed lucky you, I wish I had a close friend nearby. There are loads of other mums around here that I get on really well with but it's not the same as someone you've known for years.

Yesterday I was able to say - it's due 4 months today, which makes it seem like not very long. I'm huge already though. And am still throwing up, which prob explains why I haven't put on a stone yet - I lose at least one meal a day.

Dull and rainy here in the midlands, hope it's nicer where you are.

June2009 · 18/02/2009 12:08

thanks for all your advice on the clothes, I didn't even register there was a "newborn" size . will get a pack of these today.

I'm in full on nesting mode I think, the kitchen's never been so clean ?!

My auntie sent some pics of this weekend and I am huge.

bunny I won't be able to go on the Friday because of work.
Juicy We'll either go on the Saturday or Sunday I'll let you know.

There are a few car parks in Excel, last time we parked at the first one we found and it was a lot more expensive than the ones closer to the exhibition centre.
The first ones are just independant car parks and they plonk a guy in a yellow jacket who directs you there to make you think it's official "babyshow" parking when it isn't, it's just overpriced.
If you ask them as well they will tell you
that it is the car park, it isn't.

I'd advise you to have a look around by car before you pick one.

June2009 · 18/02/2009 14:11

Jut going through my bounty pack and came across verbaudet.co.uk which looks like it' got reasonable prices. juicy there's a maternity swimsuit on their brochure, they might have more on the site?

Myneaux · 18/02/2009 15:16

havent had time to post for a while but a big 'hello' to everyone.

have you looked in Primark at their baby stuff?...I got some really nice vests from there and they were really cheap and seem pretty good quality too....but the best bargains are their sleeping bags...they have 2.5 and 1.5 tog versions for £6 and are just as nice as the £20 ones you can get from mothercare.

I also didnt realise that there was a difference between newborn and 0-3months until I got some stuff home and noticed the difference in size....its weird thinking that they grow so much in such a short space of time.

I am also nesting like frenzy...my car seat and (rather extravagant !) changing bag have just been delivered to my office and I have a whole day shopping with my mum planned for friday....Its making up for the fact that clothes shopping for me has become traumatic!...although at 25+4 I can still fit in 2 pairs of my pre-pregnancy jeans (as long as I wear them low down.

A do have a question about feeding if anyone knows the answer?...I am planning to breastfeed but I wondered if its possible to combine it with the occasional formula feed or do you have to stick rigidly to one or the other?....DH (like he knows !) is insisting that you can do one of the night feeds with formula and I actually think he would be disappointed if he couldnt do it bless him !. I know you can express but isnt that difficult for some women and arent you supposed to wait a month or so before trying that anyway?

Next have some good maternity swimwear on their website. I have a spa weekend booked for end of march so will need to buy one for that. As I will only use it for one day Im wondering if I could get away with a big size normal swimsuit from primark as they are half the price of maternity ones...am planning to leave it til the last minute to decide.

chocciedooby · 18/02/2009 15:16

Hi everyone.

Feeling much better today. Thank you so much for your well wishes. You are a great bunch!

Ermintrude think I misled you. The kids were riding bikes, I was walking alongside them . I could not possibly ride a bike the way I feel these days . I am getting a lot of pressure pains down below and after a while I find it hard to stand and just have to sit down to make the pain go away. A neighbour that has had 3 kids told me that it is normal for the 3rd pregnancy as all the muscles etc are much slacker than before.

Littlesarah I also sleep naked but have to admit that I feel quite self conscious about my ever growing bump now.

Babygros and vests - I also have a load of vests and babygros from DS2 so they will be washed and ironed ready for dc3 I threw out the ones with stains on. Think like Ermintrude I will go out and buy maybe 1 pack of each brand new just so I don't seem too mean.

ermintrude13 · 18/02/2009 16:30

choccie aha, I just read in a hurry. My sis rides a bike to work and carried on v late into pregnancy but no way could I get on one. Glad you're feeling better today.

Myneaux re mixed feeding you'll come across a huge range of attitudes on MN, so whatever anyone says is going to be a bit subjective. The basic advice is that until b/f is established it's best not to confuse matters by giving formula. But some ladies on this thread have given top-up feeds from early on with no ill effects, so it very much depends on the mum, the baby and the supply. Are you going to an ante-natal group? NCT tutors, or their special b/f counsellors are usually good to talk to about this kind of thing, and can give you a more personal answer. One thing I would say is that even though DH might like the idea of feeding the baby that shouldn't pressure you into giving forumla before you're ready. I remember my DH really loved giving a bottle of expressed milk as practice for when I went back to work, so I do understand the appeal (men can get a bit jealous of how much the baby needs mummy at first), but you have to be happy with how you're feeding. If DH comes to classes with you he'll soon understand how important it is to respect that primary relationship however much he's itching to be involved in the feeding.

Re: swimsuits - the only thing to watch for if you get a big one is the fact that your bump will pull the fabric out to the front which may also stretch the leg-holes, especially if they're high cut, and if you're not very careful most of your ladygarden will be on display at the sides . Always check the costume from the side view in the mirror because face-on it can look fine. Believe me, I speak from experience

bunnymother · 18/02/2009 17:53

Evening ladies!

Am meant to be cleaning the house, so instead have just scoffed TWO scones w jam and cream and am on MN about to tell you how to buy Boots clothes online: [http://minimode.co.uk/shop/page-offer_product_list/offer-buy-one-get-2nd-half-price-on-al here is the link to the buy one get 2nd half price items that started today]. I don't work at Boots BTW, but think they have a great looking selection.

Thanks for the tips on the clothes ladies, I have only bought 0-3 months as we were all monster babies who never fitted into newborn sizes (God, am I scared!). But love the idea asking people to buy 3-6 or 6-9 month clothes! Otherwise Little Miss will have 100 adorable outfits for the first few months and then nothing to wear. Given how quickly I, too, am growing I know just how that feels!

I agree, Myneaux w Primark tip - I went there yesterday (the horror) and bought a "few" things and agree that its excellent value (esp as apparently the little mites outgrow things but don't wear them out). Not great if you value your sanity, though, and clearly I don't as have been twice in as many weeks. They have v good, cheap tops/cardis for me, plus I actually really rate their underwear.

LittleSarah - am also a fellow nudist, but now taken to wearing camis w hidden support to try and contain my big bosoms. Not previously a problem! Primark has really cute lace trimmed boy briefs that go well w them. I don't work there, BTW, am just cheap!

ermintrude - thanks for sensible advice re feeding - it is pretty confusing to me. I am hoping to express so that DH can feel our little tike and enjoy the bonding, too. While not feeling like a big cow!

Juicy - I 2nd the WTF w MIL and baby name list!!

June - sorry I won't see you at the Babyshow. I am starting to think its going to be pretty knackering and am having 2nd thoughts. But am pretty sure I can step up .

Off to vaccuum / dust / whatever and wipe scone crumbs from around my happy mouth!

Tee2072 · 18/02/2009 18:10

Hi girls.

Back to work today and totally knackered. Trying to convince boss to let me go to 4 days a week. He's thinking about it.

I am telling everyone to not buy me newborn clothes, but get 0 - 3 months. They are all, but what colour, you won't tell us what it is! Personally, I will not be upset if its a boy and has to wear pink or a girl in blue. Its a newborn, not like it knows the difference!
