june - realise everyone is different - we were given the DVD on two occasions. The first one we looked at twice, the second one I looked at once, and dp never. We tend to gaze at the photos. The experience at the time was magical, but didn't really want to look at DVD over and over. But I can imagine everyone is really different on this.

I was worried about washing powder, but so many people seemed of the opinion it didn't make much difference. My daughter didn't seem to have sensitive skin. I did try some environment friendly - natural washing liquid but no stains came out, so had to give that up. Am quite interested to hear what others think about this.

I think we are going to struggle to keep it secret that we are having a boy.

So true, almost March really, and then June will start to seem really close.

littlesarah - some of my close family buy cheap things or 'forget'. I am embarrassed and try and suggest things they might like to get. If your husband is of a generous nature, he will always find it embarrassing like I do. With my forgetful brother, on two occasions I have bought the presents myself, given them to him wrapped and he just fills out the card and gives me cash.

We went out to dinner for Valentines which was such a treat. I wore my high heel sexy boots which made me feel better than I have in months. Thank goodness it wasn't icy.

Now must go and do some work.

June2009 · 16/02/2009 11:58

laura I hope you feel better now, or soon.
I haven't felt sick but I need a nap in the afternoon again, feeling so drained.

I'm freaking out this morning.
I feel like I really neeeeed to prepare my bag for labour and a bag for the baby (and promised dh a bag with crisps too ;)
Is that nesting?

LittleSarah · 16/02/2009 12:12

June - Lol, I think you may be going too far worrying about the labour bag, but it's not surprising really, pregnancy brings these things out!

daisy - Yes dh is generous so it does mortify him poor boy. Before we got married his mum gave me a book of hers; How to Keep Your Man Monogamous! (It's only on short-term loan btw). Not so much stingy as crazy that one!

ermintrude13 · 16/02/2009 12:37

Afternoon all

Lovely sunny first day of half term here in Nottingham; DC have had pasties from up the road for lunch and are in the play fort reading comics and eating sweeties - HOW many big treats all at once?!

June I'm impressed you've already laundered baby clothes! I put on sleepsuits straight out of the bag to no ill effect, but only first time round, after that midwives' tutting got to me! I always use non-bio anyway (Ecover gets out stains as well as anything else does for me) and it's definitely recommended for little babies, just to be on the safe side. Why not leave it till a month before you're due and give them a spin in something non-bio then?

Also don't panic about the stuff you need to get ready - I know it's classic first time mummydom, and I was exactly the same, but basic clothes, nappies and a sling, buggy or carseat are the only vitals you need at first - you can get everything else as you go along in the first few weeks. I didn't even use baby bath on mine for weeks. You'll be absolutely fine. .

littlesarah and daisy your comments about different levels of generosity strike a chord here - my family never go anywhere without a bottle of wine and box of chocs to give hosts; DH's have no social graces, and once even gave me a christmas present wrapped in newspaper . Not for environmental reasons either - just meannness and general lack of style. Being a chap, and not as sensitive to this as litltesarah's OH sounds, DH would never take the trouble daisy does to cover for her bro though - and sounds like he doesn't deserve you running around for him, but disparity can be so embarrassing.

I'm not keen on babyshowers in the classic US style - are our poor friends expected to buy presents then AND after the birth? In any case, because we don't know the sex they couldn't go mad in a blue or pink direction just yet. I don't know anyone who's had one like that, but I am planning to cook a meal for a pile of girl friends, and ply them with fizzy wine, a few weeks before due date, and relish a bit of grown-up company before it's too late. But gifts will be banned until after the birth.

littlesarah LOL @ your MIL's choice of book loan . Does she have a very low opinion of her son's morals?!

LittleSarah · 16/02/2009 12:49

ermintrude - I don't expect two sets of gifts, dearie me, that was never the idea! What I like about it is that people can get you useful things (if they like) that I would have bought pre-birth and so would have not been possible as presents. However perhaps people will thing I am some kind of manic gift grabber...

My MIL is a character. I don't think she has a low opinion of dh's morals in particular but men in general! Perhaps it's people in general she has a low opinion of actually as I know she herself has had an affair!

chocciedooby · 16/02/2009 12:50

June2009 lol. I was exactly the same as you when having dc1.Its so exciting!

I am really excited and this is my 3rd time around. I couldn't wait to buy a new pushchair and have already got some stuff loaned from friends.Moses basket and stand, baby bath, pram on its way soon for use downstairs etc.I love to be organised but try not to panic about packing your overnight bag just yet.

I used non-bio washing poweder for years after having dcs but changed recently to normal stuff and it seems to get stains out much better. I will however be converting back to non-bio just to be on the safe side as I have sensitive skin so maybe my baba could.

Ermintrude sounds like your dcs are having a ball! I would loved to join them in having a tasty pastie! Not had one in years.I feel ike a bad mother today. Not left the house yet.DS1 is a bit hot and cranky so don't want to go too far.Giving mine fish fingers and toast for lunch .

ermintrude13 · 16/02/2009 12:53

Littlesarah I just don't know what the protocols are re babyshower gifts/birth gifts, although I suppose a girl can never have too many muslin squares (which my sis thought were 'muslim squares' until she saw them in a packet ). The notion of women friends getting together pre-birth is a really lovely one though - you never catch up with people properly for the first few months because you're so focussed on baby, and in my case certainly, rather nappy-brained.

@ your naughty MIL! And at you knowing about it. She should have given your DH the male equivalent of that book, going on her own experiences .

chocciedooby · 16/02/2009 13:13

With regards to degrees - I really admire anyone with a degree. Sometimes I wonder if things would have been different for me had I gone to uni and got one but I don't regret a thing now. I qualified for uni but chose to go to business college instead for 2 years (much to my fathers disappointment).I then worked until I was 22 and then I backpacked around the world for 2 years. That was an education in itself! I also met my DH along the way
Maybe 1 day I will study for a degree but right now I can just about cope with 2 dc's and this other lo on its way

daisy5 · 16/02/2009 13:57

As I spend much more time in toy shops and children's departments and as I know what stage they are at, and what presents they would most like, it really is quite easy to buy on behalf of others sometimes. My brother is just forgetful and never near any of these shops. Once I rang from a shop and said 'there is a bargain on xyz and she would love it. Shall I get it from you?'. And he was really pleased I suggested it. My mother is somewhat eccentric, hates shopping and is a little bit 'economical'. Dad is generous to a fault, but huge memory problems and really doesn't do shopping. Before I set off travelling I used to do much of the Christmas shopping for them to ensure people got presents. When dd was born, I rang them and suggested a Stokke high chair as a present, as she would sit in it till she was 10 and I would always remind her it was 'Grandma and Grandad's' chair. They agreed and Dad wrote the cheque.

Anyway, it bets being disappointed, which is what I used to be until I took charge!!!

Such a shame Woolworths has gone under, it was quite a treasure trove of fun little presents and I used to direct a few people there, as there was often one local to them.

Yes, the only baby showers I have heard off, people have given a present then, instead of after the birth, not two presents. I guess it might need to be made clear.

I really am avoiding work today......I am going to ban myself from Mumsnet for the rest of the day..

SweetBROODY · 16/02/2009 14:42

Hello ladies... would you believe it?s taken me a week to catch up after being too busy to post? I hate posting without having read everything up first? It?s good to see that most of us are doing well? I have had a few trips to the hospital recently ? which have been interesting. The consultant at one really wound me up ? She goes... how many weeks are you? I said 25... And she goes... ?Oh you have come a long way haven?t you?!?!?? I was like... what is that supposed to mean?
I?m feeling pretty tired now... and have a pain in my groin area... could this be the start of SPD? It?s so painful I could cry?. I have thought about doing a hospital bag but didn?t get around to it yet as we have been doing DIY ? the house looks fab but we have not got a nursery yet... I think we?re waiting until baby arrives... I am pretty amazed that I am 25 weeks pregnant and still find it hard to believe... it?s only the back pain and the huge belly that reminds me?
I can?t really reply to everyone individually but I can honestly say it was very amusing to read the posts from the last month or so?..I am going to try and stay more actively in touch... but it is hard at the moment... so much going on.
But I?m sending big hugs and thinking of you all... thank you for your posts that made me smile, welcome to the newbie?s and I?m sorry you?re not feeling so good to the ladies... who aren?t feeling so good!

June2009 · 16/02/2009 15:49

hey sweet I hope you're ok, you kinda sound like there's a lot going on for you at the moment. Good to hear you're checking out the thread

I also have pain in my groin especially standing up from sitting or lying down and going up and down the stairs, the mw referred me to physio for spd but no-one has actually examined me or asked questions so I assume this is what it is
Try and move often and little, I find it's better if I don't sit for more than 20 miutes at a time, and if it hurts I go lie down for half an hour and then i'm ok again.
I try and be careful keeping my legs together - which makes err, mmm, "babydancing" errr, awkward interesting different I guess. :D (sorry for TMI)
we haven't got a nursery yet. I'm all weord and flustered today and almost told someone to eff off over the phone because they were insistant and annoying, I think I might need some sleep.
and some biscuits.

questions2008 · 16/02/2009 15:51

hmm, the britax fitfinder (thanks for pointing that out girls) says our car can't take the first class until forward facing, so are back to the drawing board.

i've just been reading about the 28-week GTT and was wondering what other people have been told to do in preparation for it. My midwife said just to come in and drink the lucozade, wait an hour and take some blood, no mention of skipping breakfast. but now i'm hearing that you actually to fast, ie not eat breakfast beforehand. what have others been advised?

June2009 · 16/02/2009 16:25

hi question this is the official document/guideline I was given by the person who made the appointment forme

  • this test can only be done after fasting for 12 hours
  • do not eat anything after 8pm on the day before your test.
  • do not drink anything, except water after your evening meal
  • It is advisable not to drink alcohol or smoke within the twelve hours before the test
-Come to the antenatal clinic at the appointed time and let the Phlebotomist know of your arrival and why you are here.
  • The test will take approximately 2 hours from the time of arrival, dring this time you will still be fasting and you must not smoke during the test.
-During the test you will give 2 blood samples.

What I was told is that they take one blood sample when I come in, then they will give me a sugary drink and then take another blood sample a couple of hours later.

My appointment is at 9am but the details above look like standard details as it was a photocopy. Good luck with it!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 16/02/2009 16:34

Hi there!

Had my 3D scan today - it was amazing. Have found out I'm having another boy! It will be lovely for DS to have a brother, and I have all boy stuff anyway. I'll try and post the pictures on my page....

bigcar · 16/02/2009 16:39

Afternoon all

sweetbroody, lovely to hear from you, hope you get some time to relax soon!

questions, i've been given a diet sheet to follow for the 3 days before the gtt which includes eating loads of carbs, then fasting overnight. They take blood when I get there, give the sickly sweet glucose drink (nothing like lucozade i'm afraid) then take more blood 2 hours later. Hence my reluctance to go if I really don't need one! Give the unit a ring and check, could just be different because you live in a different area and they do the test differently?

june, i'm totally fed up with british gas at the moment, they just won't get that I don't want to change my supplier and they always choose to ring at the most inconvenient time.

Dd2 got hsm3 this morning and then blew the rest of her money in primark, so she got a big bag of stuff for £17, bargain Ds did nothing but moan about being dragged round girlie shops, he forgot very quickly that we spent ages in gamestation while he made his mind up which ds games he wanted with his money At least they were both reasonably quiet while they watched the film this afternoon

bigcar · 16/02/2009 16:42

That's lovely news Ineed

SweetBROODY · 16/02/2009 16:47

June bigcar I dont think its likely that i'll get any rest! Its getting close to the 1st of March when I will have the baby ceremony and will at last be able to wash my hair after 7 months YES 7 MONTHS of not washing it!

I look forward to that....

I wont be getting the GTT because I was diagnosed with diabetes in a previous pregnancy..

good luck to all of you who have to have it.. and if god forbid you get the diagnosis i'm always happy to answer any questions..
Good nees about the LO Ineed .. we still havent been able to find out what the LO is ggoing to be.. very secrative and legs are always crossed!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 16/02/2009 16:50

Right, have now uploaded a picture from today. It was so clear - you could see so much. When he was doing the gender, I could see it was a boy before he even said! Had a few texts of condolence (?) but I'm just pleased that he's well in there.

Interestingly, my womb is really low in my pelvis (all my scans, my midwife and physio have all commented on this) I think it's why I suffer so much from SPD, from all the pressure. It makes life uncomfortable for me, but may bode well for another early one (DS was born at 37 weeks, don't want it any earlier than that).... so I may be popping in May as opposed to June....

Sorry for the 'me' post - will catch up with you all later...

Tee2072 · 16/02/2009 16:59

Hi gang

I'm feeling horrible so this will be brief. Started with a cold which led to two bad situations with low blood sugar and I'm just wiped out.

Sounds like everyone is doing fairly well. Congrats on the boy ineed.

I've been diabetic for 2 years, so if anyone gets a positive on GD, ask away and I'm sure between us sweet and I can answer any questions you might have.

bigcar · 16/02/2009 17:04

Ineed, that's such a good picture, can you tell who he looks like?

sweetbroody, sounds like you have a lot to organise! If you get a chance would you mind explaining the baby ceremony, i've not heard of that before? Hope it all goes well, like you say march is coming round very quickly

SweetBROODY · 16/02/2009 17:04

Tee im sorry your feeling so rough....

I;ve had a few bad turns of lows.. and Insulin has tripled! I hope you feel better soon sweetheart...

SweetBROODY · 16/02/2009 17:11

BigCAr its basically a day to celebrate fertility and bless the child... this explains it

All the ladies will basically get togheter and bless me and the baby.. and we'll all eat together. Also they will take me for a bath (to wash my hair in milk) and give blessings it should be interesting... because it hasnt been washed in 7 months... I just hope I feel well enough for it...

daisy5 · 16/02/2009 17:11

Ineed - I know. It's crazy isn't it. Why do some people assume you must want one of both. I was actually pining for a second girl. Love the picture. It's very good isn't it.

What is GTT? I've been booked in for bloods at about 30 weeks. Is that the same thing or different?

SweetBROODY · 16/02/2009 17:18

Its a Glucose Tolerance Test.. Its to see that your added weight isnt making your body resistant to Insulin - if this were to happen your blood glucose would stay high and the baby would be bigger... this can cause problems in labour!

lauraloo09 · 16/02/2009 17:36

Ineed congratulations on having a boy bet your DS will be very happy!

Tee sorry your felling rotten hope you get beter soon.

Sweet good to hear from you again!!!

Well I'm still feeling horrible, migraine hasn't gone, i hope it is away for tomorrow as although I dislike the people I work with I feel so guilty being off work
Just wondering from how many weeks can your DH/DP/babyfather feel the baby move/kick?? DH is desperate to feel the baby
