like the new thread title, thanks ineed!

just a quyickie as i'm at work at the mo, first day back after 2 weeks off and i'm soooo tired already!! not good!!

my dd had lots and lots of hair (on her head!) when she was born and i never suffered with heartburn at all in my last pg. i have heard its very common though and it was commented on lots when she was tiny that i must've had really bad heartburn!!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/01/2009 16:36

Not that hairy 'SweetBROODY* though you'd have thought it would have been a little gorilla with the amount of heartburn I had last time. I must admit, I've never heard that it is linked to hairiness!

OP posts:
ermintrude13 · 06/01/2009 16:39

I had heartburn with both of mine, both of whom were born with a bit of dark hair - on their heads, again! - which then disappeared in about a week by which time they were blond but basically bald until around 5 months.

I think the size of your abdominal area has something to do with the heartburn - I'm high-waisted and quite short so there's just less room for all those organs to resdistribute themselves around the growing uterus. But there's also an issue about how well your digestive system copes with all the weird hormones - mine clearly decides to give up and grumble!

Hope all you working girls are coming to the end of it now and can go home for rest soon. I don't know how I managed it for my other two, am v glad I work from home (ie. at the moment am doing NOTHING) this time around. I'm..yawn...very tired.

June2009 · 06/01/2009 19:26

hiya, I got a question about SMP, there is probably a thread about this somewhere, I looked over the mn chats quickly and couldn't find it as a title.

Where do you guys get advice for maternity pay?

My accountant kinda cut the conversation short with "it's not really worth it" because although I am an employee it's our own company (dh and I). Not wanting to sound arrogant or anything but I'd really like to try and work it out for myself :S
Seeing that we will probably need someone to replace me at least part time for a while the company won't be able to afford that and carry on paying my salary anyway so why wouldn't it be worth it??

I tried the hmce calculator to see how much our company would get back but after spending a good half hour working out the dates etc, in true gvt stuff style, it broke.

Right, off to do some more research about it...

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 06/01/2009 19:35

Sure my sis gets something, she has her own business and she now pays someone to cover her ( although she is still fairly involved) hold on I'll find out what she gets... may take some time as she's normally fairly busy, (but if she's claiming it it'll be worth it!!)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 06/01/2009 19:38

Just had another thought if you post in employment issues I'm sure there are loads of HR types who can help too (flowerybeanbag is great) will try my sis again later aswell (she's not answering atm!)

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/01/2009 19:53

I think you can get SMP through the job centre. I don't get it from my employer as I don't work enough hours, but I think I can get something through the job centre. I'll have to read up on it. I think they calculate your pay 15 weeks before your due date and calculate it from this..... All very confusing....

OP posts:
ermintrude13 · 06/01/2009 20:23

June, it's been a while since I was a manager, but when I operated it SMP was worked out on something like this basis:

90% of salary for the 1st 6 wks
some lower % - 40 I think for the next 6 wks
SMP of whatever it is now - £50pw? - up to 18 wks.

And I think it's a bit more generous than that these days - the website will tell you. So you can certainly reclaim a reasonable amount for the first x number of weeks, which would be useful if you're getting in cover.

I worked for a v small charity and the board of trustees paid me full time mat leave for 6 months - which was v generous - and the SMP we reclaimed was shared between 2 colleagues who took on extra duties in my absence - this really gave them a boost. We didn't replace me fully because it was the kind of job that would take 6 months to get to grips with so it was better for the current staff to cover the bits they could. I never really stopped working except for about 3 wks after each bith - carried on with twice-weekly emails to staff, did the accounts etc. -b ecause although they didn't expect me to work, I felt honour-bound since they'd treated me so well, which obviously wouldn't work in an average employment situation - but if it's a family company or an organisation close to your heart you might not want to let go entirely..

Hope that helps and that your accountant isn't just being lazy! (they hate accounting SMP!)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 06/01/2009 20:37

June I just looked at the DWP stuff, if you calculate your own national insurance and Tax you are considered self employed and therefore not entitled to SMP but if you've been self employed for 26 weeks out of the last 66 then you can claim Maternity allowance which is £117.80 per week ( over £400 a month) it's not much but it may help. It also recommends applying at 26 weeks so you many need to chase it soon)

Google maternity allowance for more stuff.

By the way did you read the stuff about the £190 allowance that comes into play in April?

HTH

MrsMcJnr · 06/01/2009 21:58

Poor you Ermintrude I am still sick and have none of your other aliments!

Hello Tee, Bigcar, llynnn, Doris & June

Cote ? looks like you and I need to swap due dates!

Daisy ? happy birthday for Monday past I too need to update my age too

Sweet broody ? I?ve heard that wives tale about hairy babies too but last time round I had no heartburn and DS had a full head of hair! I worked until I was 38 weeks with DS which was just as well because he was 9 days late and I was getting bored. I still think 38 weeks was a good time to stop as I was getting pretty shattered then. DH had 4 weeks off when DS was born and it was fab having a Babymoon all together

Hello, congrats and welcome Borriebear & Stiefyloo!

Ineedmore ? sorry about your FIL, hope he is much better soon.

No SMP for me this time as I have been a stay at home Mum with DS since he was born (and we are abroad)

ermintrude - I think we are close enough in age to equally take the crown, and after all we are strong mountain goat types - we take it all in our stride?

BackacheProblems - my friend could barely walk nor sleep. I know she ended up buying on of those amazing chairs that gives massages. I wonder if it's possible to rent one for the duration? I think it has to be the special ones (some are cheaper and gimmicky I seem to remember), and depends on the type of back pain, but may help??

Doris - what is the £190 allowance?

Hello borriebear and hiya Ineedmorechocolate and cote

daisy5, that's very noble of you to offer to share my old lady crown. I always think Capricorn sounds rather dull - stubborn, ambitious, determined etc. But I guess it does get you up mountains

The £190 allowance OPs have kindly reminded us about is a grant we can all claim in April, since our babes are due in June. MWs should have advice about how to apply - which might be through them I think - and it's not means-tested. I think it's about healthy eating.

MrsMcJr, I agree with you about working as late as possible and enjoying the time after babe is born. I did up to 3 wks before due date both times and wished I'd done up to 2, since DD was 3 days late and DS was 10 days late - thus also reducing the time DH could spend with us in the early days, because he'd had to book it early, which was a bit . Nothing you can do to avoid that though... If you're completely knackered or have any other preg problems or are really stressed out by your job it's not such a great idea, but I'd advise keeping going at work as long as reasonably possible - it'll be worth it at the other end!

bigcar · 07/01/2009 09:37

Thanks daisy, will look into that. Health in pregnancy grant, there is a thread in pregnancy if you do a search, it's not means tested and is available to everyone with a due date after 6/4/09, midwives should start getting the forms in for us to fill in from this month. So next midwife visit, make sure you ask!

flynn1984 · 07/01/2009 10:08

Health in Pregnancy grant seems like a good deal, will def be applying for it.

Just wondering is anyone else feeling totally blocked in the head and nose just now, trying to decide if I have flu coming on or if this might be normal (dont see how it can be normal tho) trying to decide whether I should go home from work and rest feel like I could sleep for a month!

Tee2072 · 07/01/2009 10:33

flynn believe it or not, its normal! Its all tied in with the increased blood flow during pregnancy! Its not a cold, its the baby! But I would still go home from work. Xmas Grin

flynn1984 · 07/01/2009 10:34

tee think I'm just going to go home I feel terrible, someone in my office has been working with a chest infection and dont really want to be catching anything off her too

mamaolivia · 07/01/2009 11:42

Hi all,
Haven't been on this thread for ages - hope you are all Ok. Have taken day off work cos feeling all blocked up, thought it was flu - didn't think it was to do with the baby. FLynn - go home! Is bliss having some peace and rest!

flynn1984 · 07/01/2009 12:15
