Brand new thread ladies!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AnathemaDevice · 11/09/2008 19:57

Hello! OK to join this thread? I'm 13 weeks today, sproglet is due on 19th March 2009. I had my 12 week scan on Tuesday, and I've got my 1st midwife appointment tomorrow. It's my first baby, so I'm feeling tired, achey, hormonal, grumpy and completely overwhelmed. Still, it'll be worth it...

Slickbird · 11/09/2008 21:16

Welcome Ana Newbie! With all your symptoms it sounds like your part of the thread already!

AnathemaDevice · 12/09/2008 07:44

It a strange way I'm almost enjoying the sickness. Well, maybe enjoying is the wrong word, but it's nice knowing that my body is doing what it's supposed to be doing. The vomity feeling is wearing off now, luckily.

emma2617 · 12/09/2008 09:09

Well ladies...my appointment yesterday was, at best farcical!! I have seen 4 midwives so far, none of whom I have liked, but yesterdays was by far the worst!!

Didnt get to listen to bambino as we were in a pokey little office with no bed. I am so annoyed, was absolutely furious last night...hoe the next midwife is considerably better.

meep · 12/09/2008 09:48

Slickbird I am indeed in Edinburgh - if you're very late and I'm very early then we may cross paths in Simpsons come March 2009 !

I was 36 when I had dd and I will be 37 when I have this little bean - and I haven't been offered any extra scans at all. In fact when I went for the nuchal with dd they asked why I wanted one and I said it was because of my age - they then told me that I was still considered young (it's not often I get told that!)

We have used HealthcareNow in Stafford Street for our private tests.

I was sick for the first time last night - I seem to be getting it bad at about 8pm every night. I felt so sorry for myself - and shuffled off to bed at 9pm, only to be woken by a small wailing 14mo at 11pm - ugh!

Boobz · 12/09/2008 10:05

Hey emma,

How come you have have seen 4 midwives already -- is it because you are high risk (sorry - can't remember all your posts!) I have only seen one midwife once so far, and now won't see her again until mid October for my second visit.

babyinbelly · 12/09/2008 10:23

Emma. I was going to ask the same thing. I had my booking in appt and then 12week scan. Don't see her again until 16weeks (next week)

emma2617 · 12/09/2008 10:30

I saw 1 for my booking appointment at home, then when I went to doctors for my blood results and to be measured an weighed etc there were 2 midwives, then i had to make another appointment to book in at new hospital as i have moved areas.

SUCH A FARCE!! the midwife yesterday was trying to repeat my booking appointment and was trying to take blood and told me my due date from the stupid little wheel thing based on my LMP...when I told her my due date was 7th march as i had had my scan, she insisted I had my LMP date wrong...after i had already told her i only had my implant out 4 days before Period started so my dated were bound to be wrong. And that was only the start...I was so mad at having to argue with her. wish I hadnt had to see her!!

babyinbelly · 12/09/2008 10:48

They don't give me the results of my blood tests, which were taken at 10weeks until my 16week check. Which I think is a bit of a waste of time tbh. How can they tell me anything useful after 6weeks. Just because everything was ok then does mean it will be now fgs. The whole system is farce sometimes.

Don't know why you would want to see them weekly! That would be my idea of hell. The less I have to do with medical professional the better IMO. I can't stand the way they think they know better then you.

emma2617 · 12/09/2008 10:54

I whole heartedly agree!! I did 3 years of a medical degree before deciding it wasnt for me so I know a hell of a lot, and have plenty of medical textbooks to research anythin i dont know...but because I am 22 they SERIOUSLY patronise me...that just makes me more angry

Boobz · 12/09/2008 10:55

I've been very lucky it appears -- met my midwife yesterday for booking in appointment and she will be the same one I see for all my appointments (it's a caseload system) and she will also be the midwife I have at my birth (due to having homebirth), plus one more MW who I will meet at my next appointment, so I get 2 MWs all the way through my birth who I have met at all my appointments along the way. Was a really positive experience and I got to listen to the baby's heart again too which was great. Guess I am just lucky.

titchy77 · 12/09/2008 11:09

I saw my consultant yesterday who told me that from 24 weeks I need to have regular growth scans and consultant appointments rather than midwife and to aim for iol before 38weeks! I hated being induced last time, it was awful and really wanted to avoid it if I could this time around, I am going to speak to her when I am further gone and see if all is o.k if I can wait & see if it happens naturally thou don't think they will and as long as baby is o.k thats all that matters, just felt a little disappointed.
Has anyone told there employers yet? I still have not and am a bit worried about it, I only started in Jan and have only just reduced my hours now having to tell her I'm pregnant fills me with fear!!

babyinbelly · 12/09/2008 11:24

Emma- Luckily as this is my 2nd I know more about the process so they don't patronise me. Having my first at 19 they were awful towards me. Even wanted to put me in antenatel classes with teenagers. Also helps this time around as I have a very supportive DP who will always stick up for me against them! Hoping this pg will be better then the last!

Titchy- As long as you have been employed for a certain period of time (sorry cant remember how long) before you got pg you should be entitled to everything you would be if you'd been there longer. In my first pg I started job in july and was pg in sept and had a month off sick in between! I told them straight away so that I could go to appts. They were fine with it.

Hope you don't have to be induced if you don't want it. I was dreading it when went 2 weeks overdue but luckily spontaneous labour started the day before!

Mandy73 · 12/09/2008 11:47

Thanks everyone for the nice words, it really means a lot. This is all very confusing and we're trying not to cling onto hope too much - just our coping strategy I suppose. Going in for the CVS Monday, should have early results by Wed.

Hope everyone's OK. xx

I haven't told my employer yet. My midwife has told me to go to Citizen's Advice to work out how much money I am entitled to from the government because my contract ends in december (and then can be renewed) but I'll have to tell them before then, so basically they could get away with firing me for being pregnant without actually saying that or getting into any legal trouble.

It's really frustrating.

She also said I should lie to the government and say I was single to get more benefits even though I live with my DP. I will not be doing this... I don't really know what to think of her after she said it. And I'm going to see her for every app except the birth.

babyinbelly · 12/09/2008 12:54

I'm a bit worried about the amout I will get because I only work part time so it will be 90% of my wages which probably wont amount to much.

My employers aren't bothered that I am pg. Thought I should get risk assessments, told what I need to tell them and when etc but it was oh congratualtions and no more said about it. Do I need to tell them in writing?

goldmother2b · 12/09/2008 13:04

Hello ladies -I told my employers at about 8 weeks as was feeling so dreadful - they were great and have been really supportive ever since. I think that you are legally required to tell them before 15 weeks before your due date (25 weeks pg, in writing. Your GP / MW will provide you with a special form which you should give to your employer as proof.

I bought a foetal doppler from Amazon, it arrived this morning and I have heard bambino's heartbeat - amazing and very reassuring until I start to feel movements.

MKG · 12/09/2008 13:22

Morning all.

I told work right away. But then again I'm part of the management team, and we are all very close.

I still haven't told my mother and my sister yet though. I think I will do that today or tomorrow, or in March maybe.

I'm actually starting to feel semi normal now, but am still very tired.

I have my next appointment in two weeks. I'm excited because it's the only appointment I'll have with the OB/GYN and then it will midwives the rest of the way. I think it's silly that you have to see an OB one time during your pregnancy, but hey, who am I to make the rules.

Welcome to AnathemaDevice!

emma2617 · 12/09/2008 13:34

babyinbelly you only legally have to inform your employer by your 25th week and must provide your MATB1 form once you have received it (between week 20 and 23/4) from your midwife. If you tell them before then all the better, but they dont need anything in writing until then.

I told work when I was only 4 weeks (just my manager) as I felt like crap...I had a risk assessment and HR have since been in touch with maternity policy, and met with me to tell me how much I would get depending which option i took!

And they are exceptionally flexible with antenatal appointments, Im glad I work for such a good company!

Boobz · 12/09/2008 13:54

Luckily everything turned out ok for me with my work regarding maternity leave.. I thought I was going to be in trouble as they are an American company based in Ireland and I work in London, so wasn't sure what I was entitled to, but they're giving me 6 months paid leave which is brilliant as now I can relax.

lollipopz · 12/09/2008 14:09

Hey all so with the hospital they had lost my notes but never told me this until yesterday and now I won't get scan until 1st oct when I will be 16 weeks! This is the same hospital who recently made me feel like a paranoid mother for rushing my son to a and e saying that he just had a virus, I later find out that he has had a rare disease and now has a heart murmur and has to have an op It makes me sad because up until 6 weeks ago I couldn't have recommended them highly enough!
Sorry rant over! L xx

meep · 12/09/2008 17:19

I never thought I would have to post this but my bloods came back with high risk for downs. Have cried all afternoon - but it is a one in 75 risk so I am clinging on to a bit of hope. Because we only found out this afternoon I haven't been able to speak to anyone at the hospital but I will hopefully be able to on Monday. Like Mandy, I think we will go for a CVS which I hope will take place early next week.

I probably won't be back on until I get my results - sorry to bring doom and gloom.

FlannelCat · 12/09/2008 17:30

Hi all, would love to be added - I am expecting my second child in March edd 17/3/09 & have one DD aged 5.5.

I just wanted to add my best wishes to Mandy for her CVS and to share my similar experience. I had my 12 week scan and blood test last week and got a call on Monday to say that based on my blood results I was placed in the high risk category for a baby with Down's Syndrome (high HGC not surprising as I have been extremely sick for last 9 weeks). I went in again on Weds for a second scan with option for a CVS if I wanted it. The scan showed everything ok - NT of 1.8 and presence of nasal bone, but we decided on CVS just to be 100% sure. Procedure itself was ok, local anaesthetic worst bit - have to admit I just closed my eyes and clung on to my DH's arm.

Everyone at hospital were fantastic even with my endless questions, and happily I was called with my all clear results this morning. Waiting really was the worst part, and I feel like I can really just get one with it now. Just one funny/shocking thing happened on our way in.... we saw a young mum with a screaming toddler pour a freshly openend can of coke straight into the child's bottle - We live in SE London - but still a surprise.

FlannelCat · 12/09/2008 17:33

Hi Meep

I'm sorry for your news. My odds were 1/65 and I was extremely shocked and upset too. I went for the CVS which really wasn't so bad and the odds are still very very much in your favour. I wish all the best news for you.
