winemakesmummyclever that's where I get my PGP (new name for SPD cause it's all encompassing) and the wrap was the only way I could get Tink around when she was born. I couldn't even carry my 4lb baby in a car seat! My obs physio said that when this baby is born I'm to get a referral to a specialist because it's been going on three years there's no point sending me for more physio it needs to be seen by a doctor.

dinkystinky you can arrange the wrap so they can see out, Tink is very sociable and a real little entertainer so needed to see out. She could sleep in peace but when she was awake (well is cause she still goes in) she could be up and looking out.

BTW you shouldn't put a baby in any sling facing out, it's really bad for their back, posture and causes them to become over exposed. I'll look something up if you want, there is a really good article, I think it was by a physio, but it's been a few years since I read it, so will have to go hunting.

onwardandupward · 08/08/2008 11:58

I didn't mean on the front facing out, exactly (though I did encounter a friend whose baby preferred that to any other position. Mind you, he'd spent his last month or so wombside firmly wedged sideways on - not even in a breech position, so I guess he was used to being in odd positions...

I meant upright and sideways on the hip, so that the baby is indeed tummy to mummy but also with a clear field of vision. You know, the classic older child ring sling carry!

winemakesmummyclever · 08/08/2008 11:59

Tink - it's bloody awful isn't it? Sometimes, it got so bad that I thought my hip joint was crumbling and my leg would fall off . Thankfully, an MRI showed that it was still there - just all muscular/tendon nonsense going on. It is much better now that I have stopped lugging 150+KG patients up their beds.

The exercises help me a lot, but I still find myself getting stuck if I sit on the floor to play with ds or stand in the wrong position. Am quite lucky that my dh can do my accupuncture. He recently got quite excited about buying needles that you can heat up - I was less enthusiatic

The wrap option sounds interesting - thanks for the idea.

TinkerBellesMum · 08/08/2008 12:10

I know the feeling like my legs about to drop off! Sometimes I walk with my one leg straight and pointing in and I just have to shuffle it because I can't do anything with it. I was supposed to be on crutches last time but we couldn't get hold of my MW and Tink came early. In the two weeks I was in the ward after her birth I wasn't able to walk to the unit, I had to have a chair. Near the end I could do one way but not both.

I find the wrap holds everything together and the baby ends up acting like a splint. I feel so much better in it than out sometimes. It took a long time before I could back carry though as she would stick her toes between my vertebrae and I'd end up in a heap on the floor with sweat pouring down my face from the pain When she learned it was safe and I was still there she was great.

This is me and Tink demonstrating carrying in one I made myself.

onwardandupward the hip carry is a good alternative to facing out for a nosey baby. I get so [eek] when I see babies in the face out position and most sling makers give instructions for it too which annoys me. I have used it on rare occasion when she was older and we were somewhere like a zoo so she could have a proper look, but it is only for short periods and I stop often so she has a break.

onwardandupward · 08/08/2008 12:46

Oooh Tinksmum what great pics!!! You are a wrapping goddess! I never got the hang of wraps - I tried out friends' ones occasionally last time, but was so in love with that whole Wilkinet and then mei tei thing we had going that I never persevered.

Yeah, I remember the one and single time I tried the small-baby-faces-forward ring sling position, with that whole crossed-legs bit going on. I remember walking around for about half an hour thinking "well, this is weird and feels insecure" and then going back to positions which felt more comfortable!

What about baby facing forwards in a mei tei or wrap or Wilkinet style carrier? I'm thinking older baby obviously - but are there physiological reasons to avoid that?

TinkerBellesMum · 08/08/2008 13:06

Any carrier it will be bad for their posture and spine to face forward. Their spine is more upright than ours and when you put them facing out it makes it curl back (more like an adult spine) which is really unnatural. Facing in makes them curl up into a more natural position - it's even better for their spine and posture to be in a sling facing in than for them to be lying down.

I found a couple of practices with someone else was all I needed to get going on my own. When I make them for friends I demo with them and make sure they're capable of doing it on their own before I leave them.

I'm not completely happy with the pictures, the photographer wasn't sure how they were supposed to go so although he tried to help me, the wraps weren't as good as I wanted. But I think they get the message across well enough.

dinkystinky · 08/08/2008 15:49

Hello all - had scan and saw v merry little baby in there (kicking arms and little legs all over the place ) - am apparently 12+2. They did nuchal but couldnt do the bloods (is a friday, dont do them on fridays, am away camping next week so cant do them next week and miss the slot) - will have to wait for less useful tests at 16 weeks, ho hum.

Glad to stand corrected on the slings/nosy baby point!

nadssss · 08/08/2008 16:42

Hooray! Congrats Dinky.

I felt so relieved - i didn't have bloods either - just nuchal - waiting for 16 weeks to get the others done too.

Enjoy your post scan weekend -

PinkTulips · 08/08/2008 16:55

has anyone seen laidback in the last few days? i'm a bit worried as she hasn't gone back to any of the other threads she was on either. hope everythings ok.

i had one of those strappy type slings for ds and started shopping for a differant one when he was just a few weeks old as they really are crippling. i got a nice sling from a MNer that has pockets on it so you can use it as a bag while carrying baby in it.... no more trying to carry a handbag and manage a sling, it got loads of use but had to stop when he was about 6 months as he was a bloody ton weight, not the slings fault... he was just enormous! am thinking about making a simple pouch sling for myself though for around the house as it might be a bit less bulky when cooking and cleaning.

it was brilliant though as even with an 18 months gap i never had to buy a double buggy, by the time he needed the buggy alot because i couldn't carry him for long dd was well able to walk long distances.

markstretch, i'm sure it will only last a day or two so don't get too upset... i remember when i stayed at my grandparents at that age i was always a bit sad the first night or two but it never lasted more than a couple of days. her dad sounds like he's doing lots of fun stuff with her to keep her busy, she's bound to be having a ball with him and her grandparents
i'm tempted to splash out on a pram that the baby can lie flat in if we have the money as i gave away the carseat part of the travel system (didn't think dp would actually cave in to my broodiness!) and neither the buggy nor the stroller is suitable til 3 months. i don't mind carrying baby but that said i'd like the option of not having to on longer walks.... would be nice if i could let baby go to sleep in the pram and just park it in the hall without having to worry about moving them about.

we dropped the kids on my parents last night and went to see batman.... bloody brilliant movie btw! only got 5 hours sleep aghain though as we stayed up too late and dd was excited about being at opa and grannies and barged in at 6am this morning

dinkystinky · 08/08/2008 19:16

Sounds like you need to start doing the Pinktulips patented be-quiet-till-8.30am routine again, Pinktulips!

Thanks Nadsss - great to know that baby seems fine (worryingly is much more active than DS was at his 12 wk scan - and he's a bundle of energy and noise - was since birth - so am hoping is not a sign of another energetic early riser to come!).

Am off for a week's camping (in rainsoaked tipi in Herefordshire) tomorrow so - all going well - will be off line for a while (unless all the rain defeats us, in which case will be logging in again on Monday!). Hope all of you have a good week - oh and congrats on DH's job MissNorty - fantastic news.

PinkTulips · 08/08/2008 19:44

i did didn't get up til 8.20 but she has a really annoying habit of getting in and out of the bed and standing on me that prevents me from sleeping!

darn kids

i wouldn't worry about a baby being active in the womb.... ds was non stop wiggling but is a fairly chilled out kid now. he loves his sleep!

lardybump · 08/08/2008 19:57

Evening everyone sorry I havent been on for a while but been so busy with family over.

I had midwife yesturday and she was amazing. It was the same one I had for dd and she really put my mind at rest. I had a really rought time delivering dd and was so worried that things may go wrong again (we nearly lost her) but she is going to make sure that all of it is in my notes so the delivery ward know..... I am so much more relaxed now.

Just got to wait until next week to get my nechal and bloods out of the way and I can start to relax and fully enjoy this pregnance....

It is now 8 o clock and I havent been sick today...... Could this be the turning point??

LittleMissNorty · 08/08/2008 20:55

Evening all

Congratulations Dinky ....glad all went well....have a lovely relaxing holiday....

Blimey, its difficult keeping up with this thread....

Ohh Tudors is on tonight...mmmmmm

LittleMissNorty · 08/08/2008 20:56

I also haven't been sick.....yet .....oh I do hope it is a turning point....

Gina80 · 08/08/2008 21:12

Yay - glad all is ok dinky. Dont worry, I'm sure bean is busy expending all his/her energy before they come in preparation for being an ultra chilled baby .

YHope the sickness stays away for the both of you LB & LMN - think you've passed it my way - thanks

rosieposey · 09/08/2008 09:59

Congrats dinky - have a great holiday!

Anyone have anything nice planned for the weekend? I have a hen night to go on tonight which should be interesting as im still needing by bed by 11 o clock at the latest but apart from that not planning to do anything too taxing ...

Am 12 weeks today which im really glad about as its starting to feel really real now. Whenever i lie on my front i can feel a proper bump/lump down there and my home doppler gets put to good use every evening - its so sweet from my DD's and DP to hear it as well. Looking forward to my NHS dating scan on Weds as will be the first one of lo actually moving around

Pregnancy symptoms are pretty much nil now - slightly sore boobs but nothing much to write home about and general tiredness but other than that its all going swimmingly

Hope for LMN and LB that suffering with ms is a thing of the past - am sure especially when i lie on my stomach that i can feel the baby moving very slightly but am also aware that given my well padded physique that this is unlikely - i always seem to pick the heartbeat up in one particular place with that doppler too ( towards the right hand side) so maybe the little flicks i can feel are just muscle spasms - i cant wait to really feel that fist prod though! Roll on 15 weeks, should be able to feel it by then

winemakesmummyclever · 09/08/2008 14:41

Glad the scsan went well Dinky - have a great break.

Pics look good Tinksmum and Tink looks gorgeous and very comfy.

LMN & LB - I think your sickness has landed on me too. Thought I was finally getting past the vomiting and could cope with the occasional bouts of nausea. Have now not kept anything down since Thursday night and feel like crap again . Have only just dragged myself out of bed, which is very unlike me. Feel really guilty as ds has been up since 05.30 and dh had to see to him, despite having been woken up throughout the night as he was on call. Though ds did come to back into bed around 11 for a 2 hour nap, so dh has had a wee break, bless him.

Off to hunt out some ginger biccies and hope that they stay put. On the positive side, if I still feel poo tomorrow, I can avoid the mad PILs .

Have a good, if slightly soggy, weekend everyone.

Gina80 · 09/08/2008 15:01

Hope you feel better soon WMMC - although not too soon of course I have mad IL's tomorrow too! We are telling them the news so I may co-deliver it and then make my excuses to go to bed to mumsnet rest

I have been eating toast and tea ALL day and just cant shift any nausea. Feel sick if I dont eat, feel sick if I do - bleurgh.

MarkStretch · 09/08/2008 17:33

Hello!

Well I have finally started making the most of my DD free time. Last night DH and I went to the comedy festival in the city. It was really good and we ate Aberdeen Angus burgers followed by brownies with raspberries and cream and I treated myself to a half of real ale.

Today we had a lie in and then had bacon sandwiches before the man came round to look at our loft with a view to us doing a conversion.

I got very excited about all the things we can do, but then not so excited about how much it's going to cost!

Tonight we are going out for a curry for a friends birthday, I think I might go and soak myself in the bath and wash and straighten my hair. I've got to find something to wear too, hmmm.

herbgarden · 09/08/2008 18:29

Well it's (another) night in front of the telly for me and dh tonight probably with a take awway.....god I am bored at the moment and I think it could be this weather which is not helping matters. Being a right moaner I think DH has had enough of me. I can't remember that last warm evening we had when you can sit out til late and just enjoy the warm. It's sooooo depressing. What does everyone else do ??? - I do sometimes get a babysitter (mum) but really can't muster up enthusiasm for anything right now.....Also have a cold.....

Deary me I sound miserable don't I.....

PinkTulips · 09/08/2008 22:05

i finally felt well enough to make a curry tonight

have been promising dp every week i'd do one but always felt too quesy to attempt it. on the plus side my poor curry starved men were doubly as appreciative as normal... poor ds asked for about 4 extra helpings as he couldn't spoon it into his mouth fast enough dd of course refused curry, chicken and naan bread and just ate plain rice how i spawned her i don't know!

almost had to bring her to a&e this morning as she had yet another nosebleed, but a total gusher this time. going to have to head to the gp on monday and get her a referal to the ENT clinic for a cauterisation as the damn cream she gave her before is doing nothing it's starting to upset her alot now.

MarkStretch · 10/08/2008 00:50

Look at me- I am up late!

Had a fun time eating curry and everyone was rubbing my belly.

Now home and DH is asleep, snoring and he smells of farts. Great!

PinkTulips · 10/08/2008 01:07

good god... there's life among the feb gals after 9pm!

dh smelling is as good an excuse as any to stay up late and watch crappy movies and MN

spottyshoes · 10/08/2008 06:57

Can I join the late gang I was up until midnight [proud emoticon] had a friend over for pizza and singstar but it quickly degenerated into mumsnet and baby goss Do feel like I have a huge hangover this morning tho so it will be back to 9pm sleeps tonight!

PMSL laughing [and retching] MS, my DH went out last night and stinks of farts and beer [bawk]

Well I thought I would out myself namewise as we are finally telling the rest of family and friends today - some of which come on MN hence the name change. and I also can't be arsed to keep logging in as different people as I clearly am not that bright and nearly tripped myself up alot! So I doubt Gina80 will be popping in anymore. Will stay on list as her until the scan next weds

Hope you are all well this morning and dont have my late night hangover

spottyshoes · 10/08/2008 07:00

And talking of retching (well I was) how does anyone cope with being sick 1st thing when there is nothing in your stomach? Are there any tips because it is really starting to hurt - especially my cs scar area - anyone else had that specifically?
