Laura, eek re fire! So good that you spotted it. And I'm only due 4 days before you - and will be late, so I'll keep you company!

Unsolicited comments are horrid, unless they are 'You look fantastic', which I never get. But all of you, take it from me: 'YOU LOOK FANTASTIC!'

Can't believe that people actually wear Lederhosen!

debinaustria · 02/05/2008 13:29

Upsidedown - they even wear Lederhosen when working in the mountain restaurants on the ski slopes, in the middle of winter - admittedly they usually wear knee high socks then!!

LauraT · 02/05/2008 13:34

Speaking of Lederhosen, I know a guy who wears a kilt to work - he has a different one for 'dress' occasions. always found it a bit odd. Does anyone in England see Morris Dancers about on their day-to-day activities? how about bowler hats and furled umbrellas then?

Upsidedowncake · 02/05/2008 13:44

Until about 1980, my father used to go to work with bowler and umbrella but that was nearly 30 years ago!

nettiehay · 02/05/2008 13:50

Eeekk ucake - 1980 was nearly 30 years ago - I was born in 1980!! I know I just turned 28, but 30 still feels like miles away!

splodgesmum · 02/05/2008 13:52

systemsaddict, thank you! makes me feel much better, i'm going to try and be open-minded

rolf, your comment about humping lampposts made me lol! i am also finding that i'm totally resistable to hubby, although i think my cracking pelvis is not helping in the old 'sexy wife' stakes and he's worried about hurting me

however, MW did suggest we needed to get lots of sex in the next few weeks to help induce labour - dh looked horrified!

do you think fantasies about me and brad pitt will have the same labour-inducing effect?!!

systemsaddict · 02/05/2008 14:04

LOL dp will not come NEAR me while pregnant, I have given up on that front completely!

The other thing I wanted to say splodgesmum is she is also wrong about discounting SPD issues in delivery. Are you under a physio? The physio should measure your pain-free gap (the amount you can part your knees comfortably) and mark it in your notes and then the people assisting you should try and ensure that you don't exceed that. If you do have an epidural your partner needs to keep an eye on your legs and make sure they don't flop outwards. Labour and delivery positions should be all the ones bending forward with knees together (eg on all fours, or in birth pool leaning on the edge, or leaning over a ball), avoiding anything which parts the knees much and avoiding lying on your back.

Last time I was not assertive enough to insist on much of this, but I will be this time. Of course sometimes it's necessary to prioritise your and baby's wellbeing over not aggravating the SPD, but there is normally lots that you and your assistants can do through the process to minimise the strain on the symphysis pubis.

(can you tell I'm fresh from seeing physio? )

splodgesmum · 02/05/2008 14:11

sytemsaddict, thank you again! I am being looked after by a physio and will mention that to her next time I see her.

I was very surprised when MW told me not to think about it cos my consultant has asked to see me again at 34 weeks partly to monitor the pain from the SPD to see if they will let me go to term. I don't think this is going to be an issue cos I'm not on crutches or anything so can't have it that badly, but I was surprised how seriously he was taking it in comparison to my MW.

The MWs seem to be a funny bunch round here - this is the 2nd one I've seen cos my first one was such a total bitch I refused to go back!

The MWs at the hospital are a total contrast and all completely lovely.

Upsidedowncake · 02/05/2008 14:26

Sorry Nettie. But it's worse for me. I was nine in 1980!

Re sex etc, this morning was quite a rare event and DH shies away nervously whenever he sees my boobs. Quote, 'You don't want me to touch these things, do you? Good.' LOL, perhaps I should tell him about nipple stimulation starting labour?

mellymell · 02/05/2008 14:29

THanks for the inspiration of what to do once I go on ML. Still so much to do, but mustn't induce anything for at least 3 weeks so I get my holiday pay - full - before it gets cut back to the paltry maternity package.

Re ladygardening - I thought I ought to do something since haven't bothered for such a long time and DH rather untactfully said he was sure he could hear parrots and even David Attenborough doing a documentary last time he was down there!

splodgesmum · 02/05/2008 14:38

mellymell, your dh is v cheeky!

is he going to help you with your gardening?!

nettie, please don't make us oldies feel even older than we are - please tell me you can't possibly be old enough to have a child if you were only born in 1980, please tell me that was only a few years ago . . . !

god, i feel old!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 14:44

mellymell - Your DH is cheeky but very funny! When I was moaning my ankles first started disappearing I wasn't sure if I was imagining it so asked DH for opinion. He commented that I hadn't been blessed with ballerina ankles but even allowing for that, yes, they were getting much fatter. I did laugh.

Am purposely ignoring any comments about 1980 being nearly 30 years ago BTW...

OP posts:
mellymell · 02/05/2008 14:46

splodge - you feel old - I was born in the sixties. I was already at secondary school in the 80's. Not only do I have japanese whalers circling me becuase I'm so humungous, have parrots in my lady garden, but am ancient.

Am just going off to kill myself.

Neenzandhertwinbeans · 02/05/2008 14:47

Hi everyone, thanks for your messages. Nothing to report yet though, a few mild period type pains and some backache but really irregular so I don't think it is going to happen today. You never know though!

Don't want to sound smug but me and DH are still at it . It's fab but unfortunately I keep weeing on him . Well he should be pleased he gets me that excited! Maybe that is why I am 2cm dilated already...

Is Childbirth Without Fear the Grantly Dick-Read one? I have read it and found it really interesting but it is a bit like a text book rather than a helpful guide to managing the pain of childbirth. Ina May Gaskin's Guide To Childbirth I'd recommend and HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 14:48

Hi Neenz. LOL at the weeing - serves you right for being so smug . Fingers crossed for you!

OP posts:
mellymell · 02/05/2008 14:48

and splodge - you think I would let my DH anywhere near me with hot wax? Am going off to treat myself and not only get 'tidied' up, but also have my legs, toes and fingers done at the same time.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 14:49

916 posts - anyone inspired by next thread title? We'll probably need one before the day is out (especially if I dont bugger off and do some revision).

OP posts:
splodgesmum · 02/05/2008 14:49

dramaqueen, can totally relate on the ankles front - my MW asked me EIGHT weeks ago if my ankles were swollen! I had to point out to her they were always that fat - she did have the good grace to look embarrassed!

Now they are swollen, and I have an excuse for fat ankles!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 14:50

Midwives eh? Gotta love 'em!

OP posts:
splodgesmum · 02/05/2008 14:53

Neenz, hmm lovely image re: weeing on dh - not sure that would really float hubby's boat!

melly, lol!!

thread title? in honour of mellymell how about "Not long to go now, time to pack our bags and tidy our ladygardens ready for the big day"!!!!!

nettiehay · 02/05/2008 15:04

I love the thread title splodgesmum - We might get even more strangers popping in to compliment us on the title!

Sorry to all those born pre-1980 - didn't mean to make you feel ancient! But I think it is all relative - I remember picking on my big bro when he turned 25 - a quarter of a century (thankfully I was on the otherside of the world when I turnhed 25, so I didn't have to hear it from little bro!!) - now I feel sooooo much older!

Rolf · 02/05/2008 15:06

Neenz my ears, my eyes

mellymell · 02/05/2008 15:12

splodge - am deeply flattered to think that I have inspired a thread title, even if is because of the state of my nether regions!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 15:17

Love the title splodge!

snort, lady garden thread title. Can't imagine we can insert creme eggs into that one though.
