Good luck Neenz sounds like you might even manage to beat them too it without the sweep - how exciting!

welcome new people!

I had my last antenatal class last night, which was a total let down after the entertainment of the previous ones! no videos, no physio doing animal impressions, just the MW talking about community midwife visits (please make sure pets are behind closed doors) and contraception . She ran out of things to say after half an hour!

My bag is nowhere near packed, bumpo's bag is not yet even purchased and DH is normally still packing 5 minutes before we leave the house to go anywhere, usually with some still damp clothes that he just realised that he must take with him even though they are in the washing machine. And that's when he knows exactly when we're leaving! god help him come June...

In other news, DH set fire to the bathroom door last night! We have just finished having it all replaced and he was painting the ceiling etc with the door propped wide open, little did he realise that as we have a v low ceiling in our bathroom the new spotlight was exactly above the door which was slowly getting hotter and hotter. I came up the stairs to enquire about the strange smell of singeing to discover that a hole of about an inch deep had been burnt into the top of the door. Arrgghh.

Needless to say, this evening will involve a trip to B and Q to buy one of those rubber door stop things to stop the door opening to that precise angle! Am just glad it happened while we were awake and before baby arrived, so we can stop it happening in a more catastrophic fashion.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 10:05

Oh laura what a shame! Has it caused any other damage to your newly decorated bathroom? DH and I have been slowly decorating our place over the last year. The only room in the house that didn't need decorating was our main bathroom; but unfortunately an accident with bleeding the radiator now means that room needs to be done too! Crikey knows when I'll be finding the time to do any more decorating though!

Neenz - best of British - how exciting. We will all be waiting with bated breath, although we all should be breathing calmly!!

Only baby's bag packed, so must get on with packing DH's and mine too.

Have just been compiling a list of things to do when my maternity leave starts at the end of next week. So far I've written:

hair
nails
feet
legs
'lady gardening'
reflexology
see friends for lunch
window seats recover
cook instant meals
charge camera
pack DH bags
tens machine
Sort out baby's room and clothes
Cinema (haven't been for ages)

Any other suggestions for my 3-ish weeks before life gets chaotic
listen to natal CDs
swimming

Morning everyone

Deb, I had a horrible night as well. I was awake with heartburn and then got it into my head that as the baby can spin around so much in my saggy belly, she will get all tangled up in the cord . I must have been having a real hormonal meltdown as I spent hours crying and am worn out today.

Welcome Angel

Ernest - people really wear lederhosen? In real life? That's like seeing scallies in morris dancing gear . Hope your appointment goes well and you have a nice doctor.

I don't think any of the daddy-bag lists will be useful to my DH. He'll put a book in his pocket and that will be it. There is no way in a million years he would get into a birthing pool with me. He's convinced it will be a puddle of blood and poo (yes, I'm really likely to float around dodging turds and blood clots and not doing anything about them ). In the past it's worked quite well for DH to go off and do his own thing until I'm getting towards the second stage, and then I've phoned him and he's come back in for the grand finale. I like being on my own for a lot of labour

Neenz - hope you're ok. So exciting that one of us is really on the way to having a baby!

ktpie · 02/05/2008 10:08

Neenz - very excited about your news! Our first babies!

Laura - good job you noticed the smell in time.

I went to the dentist first thing this morning and everything is fine so that is a relief.

Big news though is we went to Morrisons last night and they had loads of Creme Eggs half price! Was forced to stock up with half a dozen.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 10:11

LOL at your ladygardening mellymell! I've got a similar list, but also includes spring cleaning the kitchen and printing backlog of photo's and putting them in albums etc.

I'm also going to go to a few exhibitions/museums while I can! DH is taking my first week of leave off and we have a week of nice 'us time' activities planned which I'm really looking forward to.

LauraT · 02/05/2008 10:13

The rest of the bathroom is fine luckily, and the hole in the door is eactly in the middle, widthways so you can't see it from either side. don't know how he managed it!

Upsidedowncake · 02/05/2008 10:35

Wow! I must learn to read messages more often!

Neenz - fantastic! 2cm dilated already Very jellybags

Welcome Angel

In other news, you may remember I was saying that DS hadn't learned how to open in his own door yet. Well this morning, he did, and charged into our bedroom to find us in a somewhat compromising position. Fortunately too excited about his big achievement to look too hard at us. 'Look Mummy. I oped it myself, Mummy!'

Rolf · 02/05/2008 11:26

UDC . DH has no trouble resisting me at the moment, whereas I am practially humping lampposts.

Just got back from the shops and at least 3 people made comments like - you're never going to last 5 more weeks, or - it's very low isn't it? grrr...

ErnestTheBavarian · 02/05/2008 11:35

Docotrs experience a bit mixed. very happy with surgery - very thorough, did heart rate & contraction monitoring, ultra sound etc etc, had sugar in urine, which is worrying, all very good, but doctor really rushed - spoke at a million miles an hour and didn't really answerds Q's, just concurred with me, eg spoke about c-section but I am still concerned & unsure about it and instead of discussing, he basically said with my history why not/ he'd have no problem with it, instead of discussing pros & cons. but then dunno if it was just cos it was my 1st visit and loads to do.

He also said, do I want any more children and to consider getting sterilsed just thrown into the convo, and passed me a paper on it to browse over. I've heard it's not so sure when done during a c-section - he poo pood this, and I also heard vasectomy much more sure, which he again poo pood, so much to think about and still have to sort out hospital.

Good news is got Kindergarten place confirmed for ds3 to start September, but willl see if he can start sooner - September seems a long way away!

btw yes, Laderhosen frighteningly common, but please make sure you scroll down and look closely at the 3rd picture down for the weirdy half sock. What is that all about???

Hope things happen smoothly for you Neenz. With ds1 I was 2 cm dilated 3 weeks before I actually went into labour. They're going to do a sweep - if it still doesn't start, will they do anything or just wait and see. They didn't seem overly concerned that things were imminent when I was 2 cm, and indeed, I had quite a wait ahead of me still.

Must pack my hospital bag too, when I find out what I need to bring.

Phew about catching the fire soon enough - has everybody got thier smoke alarms?

nettiehay · 02/05/2008 11:36

rolf I am also getting these comments - 'oh you'll never last another 5 weeks' - well I bloody need to last at least 3 more! I'm still at work for another 3 weeks and the cot won't be delivered for another 2 1/2 weeks, so we simply can't have the baby before then (which I have informed my belly of in no uncertain terms!) I'm not ready for this baby yet, so it will have to wait!

Oh and the amount of people who tell me that it will definitely be a boy/girl (delete as appropriate) and that they have never been wrong.... well someone is going to have to be and BTW - the odds of you being right a pretty good - 50/50! Not like a horse race is it???!!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 11:54

my mum and MIL both smugly convinced I'm having a boy. Part of me hopes it's a girl just to contradict them .

Glad rest of bathroom ok Laura.

Revision not going so well this morning - feeling very queazy a-la early pregnancy. Anyone else having this? Just had a lie down and a snooze but not feeling much better. .

Oh, someone did say I was looking very 'neat' yesterday which made me very happy. It's not actually true though!

ernest sorry about your doc. I'm sure you wont let him rush you into any decisions you not happy with!

OP posts:
whinegums · 02/05/2008 12:02

Neenz, so excited for you, can't wait to hear how you get on.

Laura - eek! Glad you caught it in time.

Ernest, hope you're ok, how are you settling in after the move?

Mellymell - ladygardening indeed! A friend asked me last week at which point should one go for a pre labour bikini wax. I just laughed. Maybe I'm just being a bit sloppy about that one, it's the last thing on my mind. (I can't see it anymore after all). I shall be having pretty toes though, going for a calgel pedicure - the last for aaaages - when my mat leave starts.

DQ - also feeling a bit sicky, but I think it's because I'm running out of space for food, I feel full after just a few mouthfuls of anything. This is what having your stomach stapled must be like.

7 weeks today for me. Oh bugger!

LauraT · 02/05/2008 12:07

my SMIL also thinks it's a boy, and I've got that stubborn contradictory gene makingme feel the same as you DQ

why do random people think they can comment on your size when pregnant? a woman in M and S the other day told me I was very big, which I don't think is particularly true whinegums you've seen me - did I look particularly big to you??

can't wait for the end of the day... no work on Monday and from home kind of on tuesday. woo!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 12:11

7 weeks and two days for me whinegums. At least its not just me who's feeling sick. I just need all the unpleasant symptoms to hold off for a week till I get this bloody exam out of the way. I really need to cram, but the only way I dont feel sick is when I lie down.

LauraT - completely with you on the unsolicited comments on size etc.

Just realised that from now till I finish work in 3 weeks I wont work more than two consecutive days at any time. And with ante-natal classes and MW appointments I really dont have too much work time left. .

Off to try and do a bit more studying before lunch.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 12:13

Oh, got some very cheap nightdresses for hospital from sainsbury's yesterday that weren't too hideous (£4.50 each). They've also got quite a few lightweight dressing gowns, for around a tenner so I'm going to get one too, rather than having to pack my normal lightweight summer one away.

OP posts:
nettiehay · 02/05/2008 12:24

mellymel - i was worried about my 'ladygarden' early on in my pregnancy and was contemplating the pre-birth wax, but now that I can't see it, I don't worry about it! I figure the midwife will have seen all sorts, so I'm not too worried.

bitofadramaqueen · 02/05/2008 12:35

I'm a bit the same nettiehay!

OP posts:
debinaustria · 02/05/2008 12:38

HI everyone, bought plants this morning, the shop had 20% off and it was utter chaos with only 2 tills working, queued for 30 minutes.

Sorry Sophie don't fancy doing early morning breakfasts!!

Ernest - Dr doesn't sound that great tbh, good luck with finding the hospital. With you on the Lederhosen though, it's weird when you go in somewhere like a bank and they look quite respectable with jacket and shirt, they walk away from the counter and then you see the Lederhosen.

Rolf - sorry you had a bad night too

Mellymell - your list sounds heavenly, being self employed I don't get maternity leave, the guests keep on coming, can't afford to refuse anyone.

This is what I need to do before Birth
buy a cot
mattress
bedding
nursing bras
breast pads
maternity pads
changing bag
make space in bedroom for cot and baby stuff
clean everywhere
make meals for freezer
plant up 14 window boxes
paint balcony wood
help dh decorate a guest bedroom and lay flooring(should be fun)
Get 4 bedroom apartment ready for guests arriving on 24th May
etc
etc...

OMG - there's so much more too, it's depressing so I'm going to stop now and go in search of chocolate

whinegums · 02/05/2008 12:50

Laura, no you didn't look particularly big! Cheeky cow in M&S - did you say anything in return?

DQ - will check out Sainsburys for night attire. I can see a gap in the market for this! Good luck with studying/exam.

Bloomin heck Deb, that's quite a list - thank goodness I don't have to do any of the ones towards the end of it! I am somehow, accidentally, quite organised. Going to do online shopping when I finish work and get the last few bits n bobs delivered to the door. And continue the quest for nightwear!

LauraT · 02/05/2008 13:00

I walked away in dignified silence!

I hadn't contemplated the nightwear thing until you all started talking about it, will have to start investigating...

7 weeks 6 days here. I'm going to be left alll alone while you all go off to post-natal chat!

goingfor3 · 02/05/2008 13:01

Wow Debs you have lots to do, no more wasting time looking at fancy gold prams!!

Aberdeenhiker, dd2 came at 40+2 weeks - those last two weeks of the pregnancy were the looooongest of my life!

Getting really fed up of the 'you don't look like you'll last two weeks let alone 4'. When I dropped DD2 off at nursery someone asked how I felt and I just stared at her blankly - I was so tired and sick feeling I couldn't form any words - she just said she remebered that feeling.

systemsaddict · 02/05/2008 13:04

Just logged on to check for any babies - v. exciting news Neenz, good luck and fingers crossed!

splodgesmum I couldn't believe your unhelpful midwife. It is ABSOLUTELY within your rights to say no to students, in fact it's doing them a favour to let them in, no-one should feel under any pressure on that front, I'm sure NHS ethics committees would be appalled if you did!! And she should be much more understanding about your worries about the pain too. I must admit last time I found my community midwives less sympathetic than the delivery room ones - they were lovely, sympathetic and supportive when visiting me and baby afterwards, but while I was pregnant tended to take the approach of 'treat her like she can cope, then she will be able to.' I can see the rationale there but sometimes you want some understanding, too.

Anyway, I second all the hypnobirthing suggestions etc, but would also underline that you have MANY different options for pain relief when you're actually having the baby. Different people experience them differently, but I had a long labour and found ALL of them helped me - hypnobirthing, water, TENS, meptid injections, gas and air, they were all good for a while. Then I had an epidural towards the end, which was so good that I even managed to get a couple of hours' dozing in before the actual delivery, during which I sent dp home for a bit to feed the cat and phone my mum. Not what I expected after 24 hours of contractions! So don't feel like the whole thing will necessarily be 'horrendous', you should have choices and feel free to make your mind up about what helps you most on the day. I hadn't planned to have any pain relief drugs at all but was very pleased they existed, and no negative after-effects on me or ds as far as I can tell. You do not have to just 'cope' without help.

systemsaddict · 02/05/2008 13:05

oh and it never occurred to me until reading this thread that anyone wore anything in birthing pools!

aberdeenhiker · 02/05/2008 13:14

deb, your list has inspired mine! I need to:

-wash the cot bedding
-wash the carrycot bedding
-wash baby clothes and sort by age
-redo drawers in DS's room to make room for new baby's stuff
-buy some gender neutral sleepers in case I have a girl
-get my hospital bag packed
-buy a few more things for hospital bag
-get newborn nappies
-move cot from DS's room to our room
-make a decision about a double buggy (do I buy one?)

that almost sounds do-able!
