@user666555 there’s a huge range in what’s normal for baby teeth. I didn’t get any teeth until 10 months, my first baby got 2 at 4 months and my second has just turned 5 months and doesn’t have and yet.

reememberly · 01/05/2024 10:09

Hi all! Dd is 6 months today - cannot cope with how quickly that has come around. On my own with the kids this week, so going to wait until the weekend to start some solids, but going to order what we need today. Been a few years since I did this, so wondering if anyone has good product recommendations? Anyone rate these wee spoons for self feeding or are they a gimmick? What about the bowls with the wee suckers on the bottom? Good bibs? Thinking about an arms in one with a plastic one on top maybe? Any tips much appreciated. Think I’m aiming for a mix of baby-led and traditional weaning - winging it basically!

JoyApple · 01/05/2024 17:32

@reememberly it has certainly flown by! I'm winging it with weaning too and not stressing about. Favourite so far is egg custard lol no surprises there. But with others, she gets very refluxy if it contains apple or dash of lemon, so most of Ella's are not suitable atm. There's a couple at aldi that are fine.

I picked up some good bibs that have plastic beneath them from Asda that are serving as well.

With baby led weaning, I'm not sure what to give her in her hand and whether she is ready? I'm worried about choking ...

Thack · 01/05/2024 19:06

This is my Bible:
https://solidstarts.com/
Search for any food and it tells you how to serve solids for different ages, with pictures too.
My only caution is that it's an American site so sometimes it speaks about levels of compounds used in fertilizer or in the soil that doesn't necessarily occur in the UK. The food prep is the same which is what I care about!

I'm also winging it. I've started offering finger foods to play with and slowly starting to spoon the odd bit.
Tomato and banana have both been popular. We've done cucumber, green beans, roast whole carrot. Barely anything eaten so far. Some hasn't been to the mouth but it's week 1 so I'm happy for baby to play (or not!) it's a start!

@reememberly I've been putting food straight onto the tray.
Suction bowls are a must. Not so much for now but definitely later.
I like the silicone bibs with the little pouch to catch dropped food.

Tip: direct sunlight breaks down tomato (and poo) stains. Put clothes in the sun and you don't need to faff with loads of stain remover. (I know you didn't ask but maybe it's helpful to someone reading) 🙂 I have never been a great housewife so this was new to me with DC1

God can’t believe we’re at the weaning stage already! I was wishing the time away in the first few months (reflux, tongue tie, VERY fussy/unhappy baby) think I came very close to PND, but now that things are better it’s flying in (also, solidarity to those still having a tough time. It’s really only the past few weeks that I’ve thought ok I might actually enjoy this! Big hugs to those not quite at that point yet). 5.5 months here and not started weaning yet, not in any rush, bubs is still a bit slouched when sitting so waiting until her posture improves. Like the idea of BLW so going to give that a go maybe along with some purées. I need to download that app @Thack as I don’t have a clue where to start but I’ve heard it’s really good.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 01/05/2024 23:21

I'm starting weaning a bit early at 20 weeks because poor baby is struggling with his weight. Apparently very common for CMPA babies and do better on solids. He's very strong - can sit with very minimal support, had complete head control for ages, he's very good with his hands now and can pass objects between them. He's also obsessed with watching me and his dad eat 😅. I think it's individual as a friends baby is a few weeks older and showing very little interest and seems less ready.

reememberly · 02/05/2024 03:14

Thanks everyone (for any and all tips @Thack - gratefully received! Although v little sun to work with so far in my part of the UK ☹️). I actually have already been reading a bunch of info on that solid starts, think I’m going to be relying heavily on that too. Although a lot of it doesn’t seem super intuitive to me, like using bigger pieces of food when they’re smaller, some of the softer foods being worse for gagging etc, so I think that’s why I’ve got a bit anxious about it all. My older kids were super fussy toddlers too, so I think that’s knocked my confidence. They eat well now, but it’s been a lot of stress to get to this point and I’m hoping for an easier ride this time. Anyway, definitely not starting for a few days, as poor baby is full of the cold tonight. Rubbish timing with DH away for work, although trying not to be toooo pathetic about it, knowing there are people who manage on their own all the time. She’s also not that close to sitting without support, so another reason to take things slowly I think.

Spareincoming · 03/05/2024 20:31

We’re 2 months into weaning officially; and at 6 months and almost 2 weeks have found a total of two things LO will actually eat. Pear and baby rice mush and his siblings squeezy yogurts. Not ideal but it’s a start…
I frequently offer the various flavours of baby-giant-cheesy-wotsits but they are mainly sucked then deposited on the floor for the dog!

Just wondering if anyone has any experience but basically, I was due a smear test whilst pregnant but this got pushed back to two weeks ago. Went for the test but also had a Colposcopy as was having yearly smear tests before pregnancy due to HPV but never had any abnormal cells. The Colposcopy came clear, showed nothing abnormal on my cervix so had the smear and fully expected to receive the all clear on the test too and be put back to three yearly recall. Got a call today and the smear has come back with High grade moderate changes so I’m back in June for a Iletz procedure! I’m so just so shocked as the Colposcopy showed all clear and the nurse couldn’t see any changes. A few people have said to me today they think my hormones could be showing a false positive after having a baby. She was 5 months when I had the test so well over the 3 months you have to wait, but I do genuinely think there could be some truth in it. Either way I’ll have the procedure and that will tell me for sure but wondered if anyone had any knowledge on smear tests and the pesky post partum hormones

Thack · 03/05/2024 21:15

@WriMum22 I have no experience in that sorry. It might be worth a thread off it's own somewhere on the site. Could you ask to talk it over with a GP or request a retest?

I've started to get a cold, so where I thought baby had teething snot and was mildly clingy (but otherwise well) I now suspect that was illness. So hard to know what is going on!

JoyApple · 03/05/2024 22:39

Hi, for those using mam bottles, anyone moved to size 3?

WriMum22 · 03/05/2024 23:40

@Thack Im just going to have the Iletz and see what the results come back as, it’s thorough that way so don’t mind going ahead with the procedure. Not worried in the slightest so not bothered about threads or talking to a GP just thought I’d see if anyone had any experience in here as we are all still managing post partum hormones all at the same time 😊

WriMum22 · 03/05/2024 23:43

@JoyApple we using MAM bottles and we’ve only just moved to size 2 if I’m honest, she was happily taking size 1 for ages and probably still would now 😂🙈

Spareincoming · 04/05/2024 00:15

@JoyApple We’ve used Mam for years and none of my DC have ever used 3, it’s really, really fast flow compared to 2; so we’ve always used 2 until the 1 year mark, which is when I go ridiculously militant and get rid of the bottles!

PinkPlantCase · 04/05/2024 19:47

@WriMum22 are you breastfeeding? I’d read that that can impact smear tests.

Do you want more DC? If so I would push for much investigation (if possible) before a lletz as it could impact on future pregnancies.

WriMum22 · 04/05/2024 20:21

@PinkPlantCase no we have been bottle feeding from the start. I guess the Iletz will show what’s happening. My little girl is number 3 so last one for us, hubby had a vasectomy in Feb so I think that’s why I’m so relaxed about having the procedure and just seeing what happens. Otherwise I’d definitely be pushing for more investigations.

Nov2023 · 04/05/2024 21:16

@WriMum22 No advice but wishing you luck!

Has anybody hit a major feeding phase? Almost like cluster feeding again and I'm not enjoying the extra night feeds! maybe a growth spurt around 22 weeks?

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 05/05/2024 07:20

21 weeks here and cannot fill this baby up suddenly! He fed all night, had a huge feed first thing, had half an ellas kitchen pouch and then more breastmilk an hour later, will probably want more milk before nap 😂🙈

user666555 · 05/05/2024 18:51

@Nov2023 and @FlyingHighFlyingLow my baby is the same. Keeps cluster feeding. Always been a bit of a cluster feeder but it's gotten more frequent recently. She's also been much more fussier. She's 22w5d x

DollyGx · 05/05/2024 21:40

Hi folks, how many day time naps are other’s babies on atm? We’re 5.5 months and on 3 but she’s really started to resist her last nap, it took her around 40 mins to fall asleep today, not really much crying but just taking a loooong time. Have had to abandon 2 other third naps this week and just do earlier bedtimes cause she was too upset. From looking online it seems a bit conflicting, some saying by 6 months they could be down to 2, others saying not to drop to 2 until closer to 7 months. Any advice? Or just one of these things that depends on the baby?

user666555 · 05/05/2024 22:07

Anyone else's baby (mine is 5 months old - 22 weeks) still having four naps? Mine sleeps for little 30-40 minute bursts and gets really agitated around 1.5 - 2 hours after her last nap. Ends up having 4 naps. Is this normal for her age?

Alloveragain3 · 05/05/2024 23:23

My little one is almost 6 months old
She sleeps from about 7 to 7 (with lots of wake ups and feeds) and she'll nap at about 8.30am, 11.30am, 2pm and 4.30pm. but only for about 20-30 mins each time. It does vary widely though. No way she'd cope with just 2 naps.

user666555 · 05/05/2024 23:24

@Alloveragain3 what time's bedtime and how long does your LO nap for?

Nov2023 · 06/05/2024 07:07

@Alloveragain3 Mine sounds similar with the daytime power naps schedule but bed sleep is an hour shorter so 7 to 530 or 6. He used to have a feed or two overnight but is now back to a feed every two hours in the night. Am hoping it's a temporary blip! The daytime naps are also a struggle and he resists all but the 8/838am one but he needs them all!
