@Nov2023 hope your baby is happier by now. I know how you feel with no support network, we have nobody here in Canada. My brother lives 4 hours drive away, but he’s not interested in coming to visit because he’s a bachelor having fun. We really didn’t realise how we have nobody we can trust with baby at all until she got here. We’re doing it fine on our own but sometimes I feel like just one family member close by would be so nice.

i have a question for anyone who travels with baby:

when baby is 7 months my best friend is flying over from the Uk to visit. In the middle of our trip I have planned a 5 day road trip.

So number 1) I’d love any road trip essentials advice. The longest drive is 4 hours. There will be one day where we drive from Jasper to Banff which’ll be a long day as it’s a 3-4 hour drive with about 20 sightseeing stops. So I’m guessing a 7 hour day.

number 2) what do your babies sleep in whilst travelling? I must have been delusional as I always assumed I’d get her bassinet back out of storage and take it with us as it folds up super small, however, she’s now rolling, she travels the whole length and breadth of her cot during the night, so there’s no way she’s gonna be happy to sleep in a bassinet. I thought of maybe bringing her entire crib mattress and sticking it on the floor? But that seems extreme…I probably do have the room for it.
pack and plays have been suggested before, but I really don’t want to buy one, they look so uncomfy that I feel there’s no way she will sleep in it after being in a crib since 2 months old.
the first three nights are at hotels so I can try their pack n plays out, but the last two nights will be at my brothers house, so I need to bring something as he doesn’t have anything.

@Psqueak87 You need something like the Phil and Ted Traveller cot, it’s the lightest and smallest travel cot on the market or it was in 2019 when we bought it in Vancouver. It’s absolutely bomber and very sturdy for such a lightweight cot

@Spareincoming thank you! Just found one cheapish on marketplace! How was the mattress? Firm? Eira likes to sleep face down at the moment which I’ve only just started getting used to, anxiety was high for a while! So I’m paranoid about surfaces not being firm enough, although obviously want some comfort so she actually sleeps!

Spareincoming · 26/04/2024 18:43

@Psqueak87 it’s an inflatable one so you can make it really firm, that was one of the selling points for us!
We flew over with a pack and play and realised how inconvenient it really was; so that stayed in Vancouver and was rehomed, the traveller cot did the trip and came home with us!

@Psqueak87 can you choose your travel time?
We've got a four hour journey in a few weeks. We're going to leave at 4am so that the kids sleep in the car without disrupting them too much.

For older kids I'd say snacks galore 😅
I've read that busy boards are good for travel. You can get soft ones online for easy travel/safer in the car.
Remember, there's no shame in a bit of screen time!

Mimi2022 · 27/04/2024 03:33

Im so glad I found this thread. It was really helpful last year during pregnancy (feels ages ago now). Baby is now 6 months. How are they half a year?!!!

as an aside, does anyone else’s baby snore?

Psqueak87 · 28/04/2024 05:14

@Spareincoming oh my goodness! Didn’t realise it was inflatable! That’s amazing. Ok the one I found on marketplace is now gone. But I’ll keep an eye out for another. I have a few weeks still! why did you find the pack n play inconvenient?

@Thack oh my god. How did I not think of leaving early? It didn’t even cross my mind. I was thinking I had to wait for her to wake to leave, and then I was thinking how awful it is going to be for her spending her first whole wake window sitting in a car seat (first bit of the journey is 3 hours, then a stop for food and a short hike) then another hour.
it makes so much more sense to wake her and leave early. She’ll fall right back to sleep when I get her in the car as she loves the car seat. And we also get more time at our first destination! I used to pride myself in my common sense, but it appears to have gone out the window when I got pregnant, and never returned! Thank you so much! You’ve made the start of the trip make SO much more sense logistically!

@Mimi2022 no snoring here, unless my partner is drowning her out with his snoring!

Hello everyone ,

5 & half month baby here , gone so quick , I have started weaning slowly but each time I give him food he gets a belly ache and his poos are so dark and running I feel like this a sign his not ready? But I'm not sure or he can't have puree food . I tried the hipp one yesterday and he just pooed straight away .

Am I best of waiting till his over 6 months which will be in 2 weeks time I don't want to keep trying for him to have a stomach ache and dark dark poos . Was anyone else's baby like this?

Or is there other recommendations on what I can start him on? Instead of the jars like my own food . It's been a while since I did this so it's like a new mum things for me haha the last time I did was 6 years ago 😂 xx

Spareincoming · 28/04/2024 08:56

@Psqueak87 the pack n play was so bulky and heavy; the mechanism to set it up was poor as it would only click in if perfectly lined up and the mattress wasn’t great. We’d had a previous one that was the same and had driven me slowly mad for a few years, then we walked past MEC, saw the travellers on sale and the decision was made!
We use it as a playpen just the same as the pack and play.

If we’re travelling in the car I don’t even fully dissemble the traveller; I take the legs off, fold the fabric under the rectangular top frame and pop it in a large bag with the flattened baby bouncer seat, together they take up very little space and all we have to do at arrival is slide the legs on.

@LeeanneD11 what kind of food have you been giving him? Could there be an allergy? I wouldn’t say belly ache or runny poo is a sign they aren’t ready, more a sign of what he’s eating isn’t agreeing with him or he’s coming down with something separate.

Hipp organic jar , vegetable rice in a jar & banana cereal rice & banana yogurt and strawberry yogurt in a pouch xx

WriMum22 · 28/04/2024 09:53

@LeeanneD11 could be a diary intolerance to the yoghurt. Maybe see how he gets on with no diary and then try some yogurt and see if there is a pattern

Hello,

Jumping in again - apologies.

Has anyone else found that their baby was extremely fussy at the five month mark? My LO turned five months yesterday (she was born at 37w 2d not sure if that means anything).

She has been unwell with a cough and a cold. However, this is the end of week two of it and I'm not sure she would still be feeling so fussy considering she's had this cough and cold for over two weeks now.

Anyone else? She constantly seems to be annoyed 🙈

Thack · 29/04/2024 19:21

@user666555 there is a 'leap' around this age if you follow Wonder weeks (I just use their website, I find it lines up!)

Are teeth bothering her? We've got some on the move, there's no sign of them being close to breaking though. Stools have been slimy for a while now and we go through phases of having our fingers gnawed.
Toddler has troublesome last molars too, veeeerry naggy with it!

user666555 · 29/04/2024 21:29

@Thack oh gosh. How long will that last?

I think it could be teeth because she's been trying to chew at everything, refuses her milk and just chews on the teat. Has slimy stools, etc. I can't see any teeth cutting through though? She's also had a cold recently but I don't think it's that as it's been over two weeks since the cold. I did get the checked out at the doctors and he said it was just viral and that time would need to run its course.

So the only think I can think of is her teeth?

Crazybrowncow · 30/04/2024 06:18

We have our first tooth through at 5 mths, I thought it was the leap as he was a bit cranky the next day I noticed the tooth! The leap is 3wks!

Thack · 30/04/2024 06:41

@Crazybrowncow wow, seems so young for the tooth to be through, these kids are growing so fast now!

@user666555 the molars are taking ages. They were bad a few weeks ago when they half popped through and they're bothering again.

I've avoided it with baby so far, but as they get older I take an approach to test if it's teeth.
One dose of paracetamol won't do harm: if they are still mardy then it's not the teeth. If they cheer up then yes it's pain related.
DC1 we'd avoid medicine in the day (if mild enough) and give a dose before bed to help with sleep.
I hate teeth!

Nov2023 · 30/04/2024 06:56

@Crazybrowncow @Thack we have two teeth here!
early because I think my boy is one of the later babies of this group.

@FlyingHighFlyingLow How are you doing with the cmpa diet? I went off strictly off dairy and I have a new baby! worse sleep but he is so much more content. His skin still isn't quite clear so the soy purge starts today

Spareincoming · 30/04/2024 07:26

We have 2 teeth two; they came through around 5 months and LO has been producing huge amounts of dribble ever since!

OP posts:
FlyingHighFlyingLow · 30/04/2024 10:04

We also have a teething baby 😅. I reintroduced dairy and it was a complete shit show. He was so happy and content before. He learned to roll, loved laughing at his toys, babbled and shrieked. Loved tummy time and rolled himself into it. Sleep wasn't great but could put him down awake and he'd take himself off to sleep, and would nap 45 min in his crib.

Ate dairy and suddenly hes crying all the time, won't lie down, doesn't want to play, stopped rolling and babbling, no laughing, constant hiccups. Wakes every 30 mins and won't be put down. Back to living in sling sobbing to himself. Horrible rash all over his tummy and legs. I stopped the dairy again and he's starting to get better but I took him to get weighed and while I was on dairy he actually lost weight. He was 150g lighter than 3 weeks before and crossed another centile line after stabilising while I was off dairy. So frustrated as I didn't want to do the challenge but hopefully now they'll listen to me.

user666555 · 30/04/2024 16:37

Thanks everyone.

I'll keep a look out for any teeth! Not sure if the fact that she was born 3 weeks early will mean that she will teethe later on?

Has anyone's baby come out of the 30/45 min nap stage yet? If so, how did you do it? DD will only nap for longer periods of time in the pram/car

Thack · 30/04/2024 18:48

@FlyingHighFlyingLow I'm sorry it's happened like that but I'm glad you know what the problem is. Will you get referred for advice now?

@user666555 teeth are so unpredictable, some babies naturally get them early and others not.
DC1 was drooling, chewing and red in the face by four months old. I think it was something like 7-8 months before the teeth started to break through.
They also didn't have long naps until nearly 2yo 🤷‍♀️ I wish I could offer you light at the end of the tunnel but I don't make good sleepers!

Nov2023 · 30/04/2024 22:06

@user666555 we had so so many dribbles for weeks of not months so I gave up looking for teeth and two arrived togetherbwith no more symptoms other than the dribbles ans hand eating

@FlyingHighFlyingLow that sounds awful for you and for baby but at least you know.. We have been referred for allergy testing but I have no idea how long a referral will take and am taking myself off soy in the meantime.. They took an instant reaction to something as proof of CMPA and didn't ask me to do any ladders. I hope they won't. I also hope your baby settles now that you are back off dairy

WriMum22 · 01/05/2024 05:46

@user666555 my little girl was born at 37 weeks exactly and she’s hit every milestone around when she should, so I wouldn’t imagine the teeth would be delayed. My son was also 3 weeks early and his teeth came around when they would be expected, so 6 months onwards 😊
