@DollyGx
We had one done at 5 days old and there was some crying but they put her on noon immediately and she was fine :)

Regarding sleep ...my little ones daytime naps are only 45mins. Is that the same for everyone else? I'm hoping for slightly longer naps but they're always the same!

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 28/02/2024 16:59

@foodislife1 My baby only sleeps 45 min at a time day or night 😭😭😭

Nov2023 · 28/02/2024 18:50

20 minute power naps for us! and not willing naps either so can take longer than that to get him down. but getting pretty good at nighttime sleeps so I'll take it

DollyGx · 28/02/2024 20:29

Thanks @foodislife1 thats what I’m hoping for!

and yes day time sleep is hard going atm! For a baby that gets REALLY grumpy with lack of sleep there’s a lot of tears just now! Night time is better but she seems to be in a light sleep a lot of the time and wakes every time her dummy falls out. 4 months next week so hoping this is just the dreaded regression and things will improve after it.

Travellingislife · 29/02/2024 11:20

My DD is 15 weeks and we have mostly 45 min naps, sometimes 1h. A few weeks ago we had a few 1.5-2h ones, I do hope they come back!
The nights have been up and down, a few nights she’s refused to settle unless she was right next to me and she slept in hour stints. Last night she was in the snuzpod and had a 5h stint! I’m not sure she’s in the 4 month regression/ progression yet or it’s just the normality of baby life.

LeeanneD11 · 29/02/2024 19:39

When is everyone starting to wean? My little one will be 15 weeks on Tuesday and I'm considering getting some weatabix to try with his milk, can we do that? Xx

JD90 · 29/02/2024 22:42

NHS guidance doesn't advise weaning before 6 months and not before baby can safely sit up unaided, in a highchair or similar. If weaning at this stage is something you are considering for whatever reason then you should seek advice from an appropriate person such as a paediatrician, its not something anyone on here is qualified to give advice on. I know in some cases it is advised but is assessed on a case by case basis with the full background knowledge of your baby. Maybe reach out to your HV and see if they can point you in the right direction of who you can speak with about it. Guidance has all changed so much over the years, I don't know how anyone keeps up!

Katiec1 · 29/02/2024 22:53

@LeeanneD11 weve been advised from PHN that anywhere from 17-26 is ok to start but the closer to 26 weeks the better.
Little one is 14 weeks tomorrow and have no plan as of yet to start her…she’s content on her bottles for now.

Thack · 29/02/2024 23:37

I'm waiting until 26 weeks (and all signs of readiness are there), we have no reason to wean early.
We'll be starting with veggies and taking a BLW approach.

Sleep and naps have gone all over the place this week. Getting more vocal and playing more which I love.

WriMum22 · 01/03/2024 06:34

@LeeanneD11 we were going to wean at 5 months as advised by the paediatric consultant due to her reflux, but we are seeing improvements now she can sit up so I’m thinking of leaving it closer to 6 months now as I feel the stages are going too quick as it is. My son did wean at 5 months because he too was told it would be best by the doctor due to reflux and it was the best thing we could have done for him, I had no regrets or worries and was happy I made that decision, he also loved food.

I know you’ve had a very difficult journey with feeding so far so I completely understand why you are looking to wean. It’s bloody hard parenting and it’s not always a smooth process! If you aren’t sure what to do maybe speak to your doctor or health visitor as I’ve found mine to be amazing and very understanding.

Spareincoming · 01/03/2024 06:42

@LeeanneD11 We’ll wean around the 4 1/2 or 5 month mark, as recommended by our consultants; I’ll try and go closer to the 5 month mark as I prefer LO to be really stable in their supported sitting.
Is your health visitor approachable? They might have some early weaning guidance.

Yes we have and we still are going through tbe journey, and I'm mentally drained by this , I've not enjoyed this stage so far and I should be but this has been so difficult for me , I've got a tongue tie assessment next week so hopefully should have some improvement on feeding and I'm now awaiting a phone call form dietitian in regards to his milk we are on as nothing is working for us 😢😢😢 xx

GreenAventurinee · 01/03/2024 20:32

Hi guys long time no speak! Hope everyone is doing well. Little miss is 18 weeks on Wednesday. Coleif has worked wonders with her wind but she still has her moments. There has been a few times in the last week eg. Only drinking two ounces at breakfast , where I’m wondering if she’s looking for something more than milk. She’s only on the 2nd centile and im not sure if earlier weaning will help this or make it worse! Ultimately, I’m going to continue to wait to as close to 24 weeks as possible. She has her last jabs in two weeks (very late here for some reason!), so I will at least wait to ask about it then.

GreenAventurinee · 01/03/2024 20:33

That said, my fifteen year old was weaned at four months on recommendation from a scbu home nurse. In hindsight he didn’t need it at all, but he took to it well, isn’t fussy with his food, and has no issues, so part of me is wondering if I should just follow this with baby girl. But the nhs recommendations puts me off.

JoyApple · 01/03/2024 22:23

I've weaned my little one at 4 months. She's high risk of allergies so that's the guidelines based on ample research, to expose her as early as possible to allergens, to reduce the risk of allergies. Also, most of us were weaned around 3-4 months so I don't see the big issue personally.

WriMum22 · 02/03/2024 06:28

@JoyApple I agree, my husband was apparently weaned at four months and he’s perfectly fine! Back in the day it was guidance to wean much earlier. The reality is that every situation is different and even medical professionals suggest to go against guidelines because they feel it’s necessary, I’ve twice been advised to wean earlier. I say go with that motherly instinct because you don’t get anything better than that.

Alloveragain3 · 03/03/2024 15:42

We've now officially been told to start weaning at 17 weeks due to her risk of food allergies. They've said to start with veggie purees and then to add peanut. Next, add egg. As they often dislike the taste of egg, it isn't advised as a very first food.

I may wait a bit longer than 17 weeks as she's still so small and not sitting up or even close to it.
We weaned DS at 6 months so this seems scary!

Spareincoming · 04/03/2024 14:03

Appointment with the Paediatrician this morning; pushing us to start weaning imminently and not happy with my “can’t we wait another 13 days to get to the 20 week mark” suggestion at all.
She’s usually very good at listening to my concerns but she was quite pushy about the whole food allergies and reflux situation.
She said the ENT consultant has communicated no reason to delay weaning post surgery either.

I am feeling very torn, I don’t feel LO has as good head control or supported sitting as his siblings did at this point, which is why I wanted to wait just a bit longer.
DH feels we should do as she says as the reflux isn’t showing any sign of letting up.
I know from previous experience the HV will say the paediatricians recommendations trump theirs.

@Spareincoming It's funny, I thought I'd be keen to wean ASAP but now she's reaching that age I'm so hesitant too.

Interesting to hear how insistent your doctor was being.

Spareincoming · 04/03/2024 18:16

@Alloveragain3 We’ve weaned from this point with the other DC and it being early doesn’t bother me, but I felt they were ready in terms of head control, showing some interest etc; but this LO just isn’t as physically capable as the other DC have been and that’s what’s holding me back. He’s still so wee!

OP posts:
Thack · 04/03/2024 19:59

@Spareincoming how much do they want you to wean with? Would dipping your finger in something for babe to suck on be enough to introduce the various foodstuffs from an allergen view?

Spareincoming · 04/03/2024 22:34

@Thack Not sure! that would work in terms of LO not sitting well enough in my mind but is it sufficient- I don’t know!
We’ve had a message on the home phone - who uses those anymore - to say she’s referring us to the dietician for advice. (Maybe because of my reluctance!)

I’ve always gone down the bland purées then adding potential allergens to the purées route, but the older DC were much more coordinated and capable by the time we started weaning! I just don’t feel it’s appropriate yet and feel I need to dig my heels in.

Tongue in cheek but is anyone else losing the will to live? The lack of sleep and over stimulation from baby/toddler has peaked. Hoping it gets easier soon

foodislife1 · 05/03/2024 21:15

*Tongue and cheek

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 05/03/2024 21:21

Mine is still sleeping 45 min only day and night, very occasional 2 hour stretch if he's feeling generous 😅 i am so very very tired. Also doesn't like being put down and will only contact nap. Got second jabs this week so I'm nervous about that also!
