Morning ladies!

Peachy, good luck for today. I have swelled up rapidly over the past few days. I had an appointment with the Doc last night and my BP is fine so it's just normal pregnancy swelling. the worst if my fingers. Apparently the joints in them are swelled hence the pain when I bend them. Ouch!

Anyone know what you can do to help calm swelling? I'm going swimming this morning for a start so that should help.

Carey87 · 13/03/2008 09:08

morning all!!

antenatal class was not as bad as what i thought, I made dp stand up and say our names as i am far too chicken!

the lady was lovely, and the massages that she showed were great (even though I couldnt stop laughing the whole time!)

I cant remember who mentioned Lewisham hospital - but my dp brother in laws sister had her little boy there after having her first at farnborough and she said that they were great! he had some problems with his liver and they both had to be kept in for a week and she said they really looked after them both and everything was really clean.

I have researched Vitamin K and spoke about it last night to my Doc. Basically some years ago a study was done that said that of cot deaths more babies had the Viatmin K than hadn't but this study was completely disproved. The benefits of VK make it definitely worth getting the baby it. I think my Doc is big into reserach and well ahead in her field so I trust her. I also got the same impression anyway in my NCT class...

northeastmummy · 13/03/2008 09:17

I'm definitely going to give arnica a go this time - maybe I'll get both options so if one doesn't work I can try the other. I was in pain for weeks after I had DD1 so could hardly walk anywhere and couldn't even stand for long periods of time. It was worse than giving birth!

As for vitamin K, when I first heard about it with DD1 I just thought "oh no, not another choice to make"! I find it so hard to know what the right thing to do is. Anyway, after asking around I decided the benefits outweighed the risks and went for it. I'll do the same again with this one.

The risk that was presented to us was that there had been an association between vit K and childhood leukaemia. However, my understanding is that that was never proven either.

ToastAddict · 13/03/2008 09:18

Morning all

Can I just check - is it normal to get period pain type cramps now? I'm 34+5. They were really bad last night, but did lessen with paracetamol. Nothing now

Also, sorry to be such a pain, but I am finallly getting round to packing my hospital bag! I know the rest of you did this months ago, and it was my intention to go back and find the posts about it, but we have all nattered so much since then, I can't find them.
Would some of you mind telling me what is in your bag?
Also quantities - i.e. how many maternity pads, breast pads, nappies etc? At this rate it is looking like I will need to pack my 60l rucksack rather than the smallish case I was hoping for!

Many thanks
x

ToastAddict · 13/03/2008 09:26

this may be of interest re: vitamin K - quite a good summary

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 09:32

Vitamin K - Ellie, its a good idea. some babies don't have enough at birth, it can cause bleeding on the brain. for the sake of an injection vs what could happen, i would go with it. No side effects for baby either. Birth is OK, its not like on the telly; really don't worry. Gas and Air is very good, makes you feel pain like you are very drunk. I don't know about any other types. Its such a short time, really, compared to everything else. The feelings of euphoria after are like nothing else I'm looking forward to it!!!

Millie is very scrapy today, lots of fists and feet sticking out of my tummy.

I keep worrying i havent got everything i need for Millie, but i think i have....also for me too. just worrying i guess

Peachy - really hope you are ok. Are you 37 weeks now? Baby will be OK now, as you know i expect!!

EllieG · 13/03/2008 09:34

Thanks for that info ladies - v helpful. Sometimes I think they give us too much choice - gets a bit confusing as to what to do for the best at times.

Hello TLSM - we missed you. Hope work calms down a bit x

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 09:35

TA - hospital bag

2 packs of maternity pads - you have to wear 2 at first.

lots of b pads, esp if BF-ing.

Paper knickers OR at least 5 pairs of black knickers. big ones!!

Nappies - well think 8-10 a day, the first black poo is a nightmare.

Cotton wool for arse cleaning

Pack of something like cif wipes to clean their baths etc before you have one.

Also think 2 vests/2 sleepsuits per day, maybe more - babies can be sicky.

I took tissues - great for mopping up baby dribbles

Mollyfloss · 13/03/2008 09:37

Ellie: If you click here I have posted the information page on Vitamin K that they gave us at the NCT class. (Right click on it and save to your desktop and then you should be able to print it). Hope this helps.

ToastAddict · 13/03/2008 09:38

Thanks Scorpio
And I will hold you to the "it's such a short time" bit!

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 09:38

it is!!!!!

(i mean compared to at least 18 years of looking after baby, paying, etc )

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 09:39

Ellie, is there any thing in particular about the birth that scares you? Maybe i can help to reassure you?

Denny185 · 13/03/2008 09:44

Morning TLSM sorry youve had a crap couple of weeks, hope things start to improve. Sorting out the size 1 nappies made me realise how stiff Ds ones have got, need to do a vinegar wash for them I think. Worked out the other day that with 2 in nappies will be washing over 100 a week better give the washing machine a pay rise

Good luck today Peachy

Toast, whilst nosing on other threads found May have been working on a fairly comprehensive list for hospital bags, was only a few days ago. I have stuff to go but nothing actually packed yet as were away next week and need the bags. Taking an emergency rucksack with me, just 1 or 2 of everything - pads, breast pads, nappies, baby clothes, nightshirt and nipple cream. You dont need to take masses in with you, worst case senario if your in for few days someone can always bring you in top ups.

EllieG · 13/03/2008 09:50

They said I would probably be in for 3 days! It's a long time! I had to go home and pack more baby clothes. Still not sure I have enough but I suppose Rob can be trusted to bring some....

Peachy · 13/03/2008 09:50

MW not answering her phone.

Vitamin K- 1 of mine had it orally, 2 injection. The one who had it orally is the one who isn't ASD. There's probably no link whatsoever but guess what choice I made this time!

Labour bag- I have in mine

old marked nightie, cardie, socks, hair band
crocs- don't bother with slippers, waters broke over mine with ds2 and they ahd to be binned! Plus crocs can go in showers (or flip flops)

Bath things- unscented as unicef reckon scented products interfere with BF

pads, breast pads

paper knickers

water spray

glucose sweets

nappies, outfit for baby- I have 2 sizes due to history (reg and premmie) but its a vest, babygro, hat and cardi

massage oils

book

should be a birth plan but need tor edo after great virus infection

Peachy · 13/03/2008 09:51

Oh towel and PJ's to change into post bath obv

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 09:52

Ellie - 3 days is normal for first birth; it takes adjusting to! You can go whenever YOU want to though, after 6 hours.

Peachy - can you ring delivery or something?

EllieG · 13/03/2008 09:55

Ta for reassurance ladies.

peachy - hope you are OK today. Keep trying and let us know how you get on when you can x

Carey87 · 13/03/2008 09:58

is this a silly idea :

going to put a 'labour' mix on my ipod so that I have something to take my mind off things, but do they allow ipods in hospitals???

and if they do, any ideas on some good songs to put on?

Also, good luck peachy xx

Cx

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 10:00

yes they will let you have an ipod, they may have cd players too.

im having Amy Winehouse, U2, and a few random songs.

VictorianSqualor · 13/03/2008 10:04

My bag is pretty much the same as Peachys. I have a toiletries bag with mini shower gel, toothpaste, deo and a water spray in, plus a pack of two toothbrushes, you have no idea how long you may be in labour and DP/H's smelly coffee breath could really make you hurl
I have a pair of maternity jeans(that I grew out of at 7months) and a baggy top to wear home, slipper socks type thingies, a light dressing gown, couple of nighties for in labour, plus some pj's for after, maternity pads, (x2) breastpads (one box) towel, pen, papaer, book, bottle of squash, flannel.
I think that's it.
Oh and for baby, a couple of babygrows, vest, a cardi, a hat, a blanket and some mittens.

TLSM, bigger babies are meant to be easier to labour apparently because the gravity helps push down on the cervix. It's also said that a supported squat or on all fours is best labour position for a larger baby though, cos they open up the exit a bit better.

VictorianSqualor · 13/03/2008 10:05

Oh, CD's too, I have got to make up a couple of CD's because my hospital has CD players in the rooms.

Peachy · 13/03/2008 10:06

day unit want me in for tests but Dh won't get up yet so I have to wait (can't drive myself in with dodgy eyesight even if I ahd learned to drive the new car yet) so I have to wait. I did warn him last night this could happen but he chose to work late, and through his lunch break and is shattered.
