Have DS, 13 months. Stopped bf in Oct and immediately got pg but was chemical preg which I lost at 5 weeks. Now got BFP today, very excited. Quite faint line but definitely a line.

Anyone want to join?

alittlebitshy · 04/01/2008 19:20

hmmm... do i dare brave it and join you?

I've been on the ttc after m/c thread, and graduated to the knicker checkers anonymous one, and now feel brave enough to come here... i think.

I'm 10w tomorrow (according to the scan i had which made me 6w4d)

Had 2 early m/c last year, so was terrified of coming over here too early....

Still scared but thought i'd try and join, if it's not too late.

I have a dd who is 4.7, I'm 28 and... er? what else??

Champagneforlunch · 04/01/2008 19:39

Can I join to. I just got a BFP (well three actually) this morning and still really can't quiet believe it, having spent the last couple of weeks trying to convince myself that I was just late.
I Have one Dd aged 4 and am 27. Can't think of anything interesting to say about myself still in shock I think.

hardygirl · 04/01/2008 19:43

Again, in the spirit of balance, I'll stick my head above the parapet and say that I work in the NHS and that all my colleagues take pride and care in their work and we do care about our patients - why else would we do the job? (Investment baking would probably have been more lucrative ) Unfortunately people will always tell you about horror stories, but don't often mention a good job (or say thanks). Just be aware that there aren't always benefits to going private. Every single one of my colleagues has a horror story about private hospitals. Private hospitals are great for elective procedures (hips, cataracts etc) but emergencies are a different matter. If you are going for private treatment, please ask as many questions as possible - especially when it comes to unexpected emergencies and ICU/NICU provision. I am sure that most private care is excellent - but you don't always get what you pay for. I hope everyone will continue to speak to me now! I'm not a troll or a mole - just a normal down trodden NHS employee!!

dancerandprancer · 04/01/2008 19:54

Hi all.

Just wondering if anyone found out the sex of their baby during the scan. Debating whether to find out or not. Any thoughts?

Champagneforlunch · 04/01/2008 19:57

Think I will find out the sex of this one, didn't the last time. Mainly to know if I have to get rid of all the girl clothes and buy boy ones.

poppysocks · 04/01/2008 19:58

Sorry to offend anybody with my rant. My BIL is a Dr and always says that while the NHS often isn't great with non emergency stuff, he reckons that when the chips are down there is no better place in the world to be treated. I certainly found that with DD. When it became an emergency - and it really mattered - they got us sorted.

Interesting to hear about things in the US - and how it differs across the UK for that matter.

dancerandprancer · 04/01/2008 20:01

That was what I was thinking, Champagne. Will make it easier to choose a name as well as am struggling.

hardygirl · 04/01/2008 20:07

Not offended - just want to make sure everyone gets the right care. One bit of advice from the inside - ask as many questions as you think you need to ask and never worry about sounding silly or pushy. If the person treating you objects to this, they're not doing their job properly and you should go elsewhere. My favourite patients are the ones that talk a lot!

juliewoolie · 04/01/2008 20:53

Hello everyone.

Am jumping onto the thread am 8wks and 1 day today, just had it confirmed by scan. Am a fellow May 2007 girl like sky think she is on here somewhere. Another mad woman!!!! I have 1 DS 7mth so he will be 14mth when my next smudge is due.

Will read down the thread and get to know you all.

CaptainCaveman · 04/01/2008 20:55

Ah you're not alone hardygirl - I too work for the NHS and have done since I started my nurse training in 1992. What area of the NHS are you working in? (ie. what field/job - tell me to sod off if I'm too nosey!). I'm a District Nurse but in actual fact don't do much clinical stuff now, more operational/strategic role. Going back to do clinical work is like putting on a comfy pair of shoes - it just feels really natural to talk to patients.
Maybe I'm a saddo but if I have contact with the NHS as a patient, I usually write a thank you letter! (like when ds recently ended up in A&E having cut his head open )

Welcome alittlebitshy and champagneforlunch. Lovely to have you with us - why not add yourself to the stats?

Ladies - would anyone object to adding where(ish) they live?

Went for my scan yesterday finally and they dated me at 9 +1, so DD of 6th August! That's a whole month (bar one day) out on what the MW said. The baby was tiny, just a blob with a head but so so cute! Got to see the heartbeat which was really really good and have a picture, and back in 3 weeks for my 12 week scan. Is anyone offered the Downs Syndrome blood test in their area? I have to book myself in for my aswell as a routine blood test but no idea when you have to - sonographer said from 10 weeks, MW said about 13 and the back of the bag says 14-15 (!?) THe sickness is as bad as ever but I am getting used to it and just try and nap when it's really bad. We have started telling people but not my mum yet - no idea how to tell her, she will hit the roof!

TwilightSurfer · 04/01/2008 22:25

Good news LadyofWaffle. I'm offered the downs check but unsure I'll do it.

Just found chocolate-carmel covered popcorn online...order a tin of it!!! It will take a week to get here but I believe it will be worth it.

pertelote · 04/01/2008 23:15

Hi all. Finally got an appointment for booking in with the midwife! Feels like forever since I saw the gp and he sent the forms off to the hospital but when I phoned to confirm, the midwife said 'oh, nine weeks, you've got AGES'!! I'm beginning to see what people mean about time going slowly when you're pg...

BTW hardygirl I wouldn't usually be so rude as to mention a typo but I LOVE the idea of a lucrative career in investment baking... sign me up .

TwilightSurfer · 05/01/2008 00:47

Finally, two seconds of nausea relief. I need to revel in the glory as I'm sure it will short lived. Has anyone else had to actually get up in the middle of the night and eat to ease their nausea. So far every night this week I've gotten up around 1 or 2 in the AM to get a poptart and glass of milk. If I don't I just lay awake in misery.

Tomorrow DD has a party to attend at 9AM at our local zoo. Can't imagine the tempature being to far above freezing so considering not going. The cold really bothers me lately. Yesterday I took her outside for only a few minutes to get some exercise and when I came back inside my belly area was shivering. The bean wasn't very happy I guess. I've never been so bothered by the coldness before. Pregnancy sure does effect you in weird ways.

Curled up for the evening as DH plays with DD before bed. So nice to have a few moments of almost silence....no tugging at my sleeve asking for yet another glass of milk. Guess next year at this time I won't have this luxury........ next year there will be another little one here.

bealcain · 05/01/2008 07:59

welcome, champagne, alittlebitshy and juliewooley CONGRATULATIONS.

TWILIGHT, not got up for food, but have got up to be sick, i think the only break i get is between 11 and 2, it's a nightmare. i have to say as well that i used to be hooked (when preg ith ds2) on an american show callled house of babies, about a miami birthing centre, looked absolutely fab, is that the closest to a homebirth you'd get over the pond? you never seem to hear about them.

CHAMPAGNE - i found out with the other 2, with the first just so i could be prepared and know what to buy and the second time i really wanted a girl so wanted to get my head round quicker, as it wasn't to be. this time we're definatly finding out as i'm desperate for a girl. i'm of the opinion that it;s a surprise whenever you find out and at the birth you're either totally ot of it on drugs or just as out of it on naturally released drugs that you dont really remember, you're also totally overwhelmed by the fact that its actually a baby so it doesn't matter when you find out.

LoW - we're routinely tested for downs with Nuchal fold test, bloods and some other scan. i'm definately not high risk so dont know why it;s routine, i'm only 21 and in my area (East kent) we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in europe so why it's routine god only knows! i personally think that it's a bit misleading. i'm not big headed but certainly have a brain and a bit of intelligence and so understand that it's a one in so many chance and not totally ruling it out, whereas alot of people round here have a lower than average IQ and dont understand that and so if they get say a 1:2,000,000 chance they think they're out of the clear. i've seen it happen a few times round here. not sure if i've explained that very well. sorry went off on a bit of a tangent, you can onoy have nuchal fold between 11 and 13+5 for the best accuracy, they tend not to do it after that date, but the other downs one can go to 14+3 apparently.

Buckets · 05/01/2008 09:51

Quick note to anyone in Britain re antenatal classes - it's totally worth paying for National Childbirth Trust classes! You learn all sorts of things that no NHS employee would be allowed to tell you. They also do refresher courses for 2nd, 3rd timers etc. Great place to meet new friends too.
The free NHS ones get thinner and thinner every year with cutbacks.

Buckets · 05/01/2008 11:13

PS today I am hooked on celery dipped in hoummous - so refreshing and moreish.

ChaCha · 05/01/2008 13:06

Buckets - Is a favourite here, we all love a plate of celery/carrot sticks (or some mini pittas) with hummus and olives, DC love it.
Add some halloumi and aubergine dip and no one leaves the table!

DH was very kind and made a curry on return from work last night - just had the leftovers and immediately feel like crashing out...sleep anytime within an hour after food = definite sickness when PG here...soooo tired though.

Bealcain - I hoped that DS2 would be a boy and he was but i would love a little girl now but i really do have a gut feeling that this is another boy, i dreamt of a girl recently and am sure this means the opposite. Happened with dSs too.
3 boys!!!!

pinguin · 05/01/2008 13:22

Hi everyone, just following this discussion about the NHS with interest and I wanted to ask what is the procedure in the early days? You go to the doctor and get referred to an antenatal clinic, sit about with you fingers crossed till about week 12 and then you get the first antenatal appointment which is when you have the dating scan, is that right? Is the 12 week appt the same as the booking appt or is that something else? Do they send you the letter well in advance of the appointment? My GP told me the scan would be between 10 and 14 weeks and I'm 8+5 just now, and waiting not very patiently for the letter to come through... the GP was desperate to get rid of me though and I wish I'd asked about when to start phoning and annoying them at the hospital. It's a fine balance between getting what you need and pissing them off, I find: the doctors and most of the nurses in the NHS couldn't be more helpful but there's always some scary receptionist to get round first!

SKF · 05/01/2008 13:42

Hi pinguin

I wish I knew what the drill was too! It seems as though it differs depending on what part of the country you are in.

I have my scan next Friday (I am soooo excited) and I am going to ask a ton of questions about what should happen next and when. It seems that's the only way to get your head around it. No one is going to volunteer the information, you have to find out for yourself.

Buckets · 05/01/2008 17:34

That's what I was going to ask, how do you get home visits from MWs? Do you just ask or what? Do you need any special reasons other than the hassle of bringing a PITA pre-schooler with you?
