Lottie22 - I just saw your message about echogenic foci. I assume they have spotted something on your 20 week scan? That's what happened to me - had a scan - all lovely - found out I was having a girl - then at the end the sonographer muttered something about "Oh, calcium deposits in the heart, could mean something, could mean nothing" and sent us home! So I was worried by this far more than I needed to be. Went to my GP the next day and she referred me to hospital for follow up scan to check for any other signs of Downs - there were none.
Basically, echgenic foci are a very soft marker for Downs Syndrome, if that is all that is found then the chance of DS is still very low. They look for other things like dilated kidneys, number of cords in the placenta, cysts on the brain and lots of other things I can't remember now. Oh, the presence of a nasal bone is a big one, that reduces the chance of DS hugely.
Lots of foetuses have echogenic foci and they usually just disappear and mean nothing. They are spotted much more often these days due to scanning technology being more advanced. LIke I said, if that is all that's found the chance of DS is still low. Did you have nuchal fold/blood tests? Mine gave me a chance of about 1 in 3000 and I was told that is far more indicative than finding one soft marker at the 20 wk scan.
Anyway, I had my dd nearly four weeks ago and no sign of Downs, good luck and hope all is well. If the dr told you not to be concerned there is prob no reason to be, echogenic foci are reasonably common and usually mean absolutely nothing. Let me know if you need any more info
(Hi to everyone else, can't be that many of you still to pop now!)
