Raindog - totally agree with orangina that the ones that are totally stretchy at the top are the most comfy and practical. I had the trendy elastic/button sort last time but I found the button really digs in and the bigger you get the more they fall down. A few weeks ago I got some dark blue ones from mothercare (!) which are so comfy I've worn them ever since. And they look great as long as your top comes down over the panel.

Raindog · 18/11/2004 16:26

Thanks Orangina! Well, I shall brave Oxford Circus tonight (must be mad!) and check them out. I always wear fairly hipster jeans normally, but I've got a feeling that anything too low cut will start to fall off when I expand further! Maybe the big panel jeans will be better - since it's getting cold I'll have to buy some thick (and long) woolies to hide the top!

I think that H&M stretchy tshirts (non-maternity) are great and much nicer than the maternity ones. (stretchy to me = non-iron )

Raindog · 18/11/2004 16:27

And thanks Seabird too!

Seabird · 18/11/2004 16:28

csa - thanks for your reply about smears, I agree, I'm going to wait til after the birth. It was only that my last smear showed mild discariosis (sp?) but the Dr who did it said no need to worry and you can wait til after the next pregnancy for another.

Re jeans, I should say that I'm a good size 14 with an ample bottom and these mothercare ones fit great. I fully intend to buy another pair in size 16 in a couple of months if necessary! (I think I tend to carry babies on my thighs )

DelGirl · 18/11/2004 16:45

I;ve bought a couple of pairs of mothercare jeans, but the ones with the buttons and small side panels and they're really comfy though I
agreee that the buttons can sometimes dig in. I'm sure they'll be fine for the whole pg. Well I hope so but the ones with the whole panel at the front do look comfy but just a bit too big at the mo.

Well girls, I've had a definate kicks this past couple of days which is so great and I feel so excited now. I wasn't sure if it was a kick the 1st time but he/she did it twice last night so it must be, mustn't it?

Off up to the huge Croydon Mothercare next week to have a browse around with my sis, Very excited about that

btw, anyone getting leg (calf) cramps in the night? know anyway of preventing it?

motherpeculiar, the vapouriser thing is just called "menthol and aucalyptus inhalation BP 1980" made by Pinewood Healthcare. no other brands than that. i got it from boots. got a slightly different looking bottle previously from the local pharmacy which works just as well. good luck!

motherpeculiar · 18/11/2004 17:42

will check out Feet Inc tomorrow if I make it that far (off work today with this rotten cold), thanks Seabird

Leander, not sure what size TS goes up to, at least 16 - but the sizes seemed quite generous, as in I could comfortably fit into a 12 whereas I'm normally more the 14 side of 12-14.

Lockets, lets hope both our scans go well on the 7th. Fingers crossed. Where are you booked in? I'm at Kings in London.

WRT the great jeans debate - I think I've given up on the jeans idea (big thighs and don't like them being shown off - why don't they make baggy maternity jeans anyone?) so I've gone for some lovely and huge on the leg TS combats. I don't know whether combats are still out or back in now (can't keep up) but they are SO comfy I just don't care

bought this gorgeous black low cut dress too, to show off my newly acquired cleavage (all you girls with decent cleavages out there - you don't know how lucky you are - for me it is the absolute best bit about being preggie - well, apart from the baby at the end of course ). I have a couple of party things coming up so I intend to make the most of it. Shoes though??? Not sure this dress with Ugg boots would be the best possible look Seabird.

I've gone all frivolous

delgirl have fun with your sis in Croydon. Is the MCW near Ikea? (feeling another shopping trip coming on.....)

on a less frivolous note - hope you are all keeping and feeling well...take care

orangina · 18/11/2004 18:18

Good luck with the shopping rainbird, do tell if you have any success! csa, i've been getting crampy calves over the last few days, which I often get when v. tired (and not pregnant), so rather assumed it was the tiredness again..... don't really know what to do with them, apart from a good stretch, but dh v. kindly gave them a good old massage this morning, and they seem to be seeing through today quite well! Good luck everyone with colds, shopping, spa weekends and upcoming scans.... I have my 20 week scan (and 1st mw visit...grr!) next week, which I'm very excited about!

orangina · 18/11/2004 18:23

oh, and another thing, I know there is this online mail order company called VERTBAUDET (spelling?) which seems to do cheap and cheerful maternity wear, including some trousers/jeans. Anyone ever ordered from there? I haven't, but am considering it, they have a free p&p and returns policy, and are doing 20% off until the 25th of this month (I think?!). Might be helpful.... if anyone has got good or bad things to say about them, please let me know. Assuming it is like La Redoute, which is v. hit and miss..... thanks!

DelGirl · 18/11/2004 18:27

Hi MP, yes - Ikea is next door so no doubt I shall look around there too, if I can be dragged away from Mothercare! Not intending to buy anything btw, just get some ideas. However, if they happen to have a sale on I could be tempted.

rydercup · 18/11/2004 19:01

Hi all - probably too late now but I bought a pair of jeans from Top Shop - the low cut ones and so far....so good - very comfortable!! H&M have a few nice tops in aswell at the moment!Good to hear that everyone is doing well - have my 20 week scan on Monday - can't help but feel a little nervous even though this is second time round. Feeling baby very faintly but my placenta is anterior (which apparently means that you don't always feel movement that strongly!)- probably more to do with the extra layer of flab that I am carrying this time round!!! Will let you know how Monday goes!

Seabird · 18/11/2004 20:17

nah rydercup it can't be anything to do with the flab because I've got plenty and I felt both mine at 16 weeks . I've got a retroverted uterus so maybe it's that. Who knows!

Delgirl, enjoy Mothercare - that's a good one on Purley Way. I was exactly the same as you when I was having dd - even though I wasn't at all superstitious I couldn't bring myself to buy anything til about 36wks when my mum forced me! Even then I only bought a few white babygros. There were lots of trips to Mothercare in the days after dd was born. Mind you I didn't have my hospital bag packed when dd came at 38 wks either so maybe I'm just a bit crap

fishie · 19/11/2004 09:00

hello. i've been lurking for a while, and thought perhaps it is time to introduce myself. my first pg and due 24th april.

Raindog · 19/11/2004 10:02

Good morning Ladies - I hope everyone is blooming today?

hi Fishie! Congratulations - you are a week ahead of me. Whereabouts are you?

Well hooray - I've found not just one but TWO pairs of jeans in H&M at Marble Arch on Oxford Street! One pair has a large dark blue elasticated panel around the top (which you can't see with a long top) and are sooooo comfy! the other pair are all denim but come up quite high and are adjustable with buttons at the side. They are still a tiny bit too big just now but I'm sure I'll fit nice and snug in a few more weeks. And both for the price of one pair of Topshop's - yippee!

Hope everyone's scans go well - keep us posted. (Is anyone having an internal one to measure their cervix? I'm interested in whether it's just because Lewisham is a research/teaching centre)

fishie · 19/11/2004 11:32

hello raindog, i'm in london.

have just given up normal clothes - been squeezing into skirts for the last week or so, very uncomfortable.

my 20week scan is on the 10th, am waiting for results of quadruple test and trying not to worry it.

strawberry · 19/11/2004 13:39

Welcome Fishie!

Saw midwife yesterday and all is well. Good to her the baby's heartbeat.

I am 19 weeks but she says my uterus measures 2-3 weeks bigger than that. The 2 scans I've had also suggest that am ahead of LMP dates. Wondering if this is because my cycle may have been irregular following my mc...

Anyway got 20 week scan next Friday so perhaps will get more info then.

orangina · 19/11/2004 13:40

Welcome fishy and well done raindog on the shopping success... and bravo anyone (nb fishie) who has only just stopped wearing normal clothes....! I have been a happy bunny in my maternity wear for at least 6 weeks now (probably more like 8 actually...). I swear bump is bigger each day. raindog, despite ts prices, were their things nice? worth facing the crowds tomorrow for?

Seabird · 19/11/2004 15:06

Hi Fishie - good luck with your results. When are you due to get them?

Raindog, I'm not having that cervix scan and I've not heard of it before. Is it a screening thing or research?

fishie · 19/11/2004 15:36

thanks all for the welcome

not sure when results back - could be up to another week and a half. i'm nearly 36, not old enough to be offered a nuchal at my hospital, but old enough to be fairly likely to get a positive result.

orangina · 19/11/2004 17:47

sorry, fishie, spelt your name wrong last time (not very nice!)

xoz · 20/11/2004 19:10

Hi all,
glad to hear everyone's doing well. You'll probably all hate me when I say this but... I'm still wearing normal clothes (now 19 weeks). I lose weight off me when I'm pg and put on bump so that means that I can wear "normal" clothes quite a long way through IYSWIM. I did invest in a nice stretchy pair of black (normal) trousers from QS on Thursday. I just bought 2 sizes bigger than normal to allow for the bump to grow and they only cost £6! Very happy about that. When I was pg with dd2 (2.5 years ago) I got some really comfy maternity jeans (with the big stretchy panel) from Next Clearance shop. I don't think they have maternity gear in their regular high street shops but they do it in their catalogues and so they have some materity wear in the Clearance stores too.
I have a midwifes appt on this Thursday and my 20 weeks scan on Friday so it should be a good week. Hope everyone else is happy and healthy.

xoz · 20/11/2004 19:11

sorry - fishie, welcome from me too.

Seabird · 21/11/2004 09:03

Glad to hear you're on good form Xox. Well each to her own - I've been in maternity clothes since about 10 weeks (same as last time) and I love it! (Any excuse to go shopping .) It's funny how our bodies are all so different. I'm just glad mine's pretty much behaving inside at the moment - at last!

Some Next stores do maternity eg Bluewater. I've got a few nice tops from there. Quite reasonably priced too.

Emmalina · 21/11/2004 21:04

Hi all. Have not had time to log on all week and it is hard to keep up with all the messages, so sorry this is a bit long! Firstly hello Fishie. We are due a couple of days apart. What is a quadruple test anyone?
Good luck everyone with the scans. Raindog, not heard of the internal scan. I am with the Mayday in Croydon. My scan is the 6th Dec - can't wait. We are going to find out the sex and are very excited, but nervous. I have had no more bleeding since last weekend so I am hoping all is well. I felt some movement this week to keep me reassured. No more embarrassing talks with MIL necessary, thank god.
Strawberry, I think the cycle thing is a bit random - I have a feeling I conceived on my honeymoon, during my period!
As for looking pg, my friend came to stay this weekend who I have not seen for 6 months and she said I looked normal. So hard to tell as I feel enormous but to outside world, no evidence of pg. Not wearing mat wear yet, but great advice on the jeans front girls. Wearing bigger versions of my normal work trousers and that is doing the trick for work for now. Bought a great elast.waist skirt in Primark for 6 quid, looks great with long boots, comfy and will last whole pg ! On mat clothes front, DP for tops if you have a large chest (I guess we all do at the mo!), good wide leg work trouser from Blooming Marvelous. Speedo do a great pg swimming costume for any sporty types out there. Finding a coat has been tricky - I bought a size 20 duffle coat in TKMaxx in the end. Its huge, but I can't get my normal coats done up! Motherpeculiar, just bought great knee length boots in ALDO. They have loads of styles and not too expensive.
As for all the health spa weekends - you lucky things. I would LOVE to have a weekend like that I might try and persuade my PG friend that we need to do this as a last bit of pampering whilst we have no little ones around.
As for maternity jeans, I gave up looking as I have big butt and thighs and looked like a tub of lard in all of them and I don't even look PG yet! I am a size 16 and quite short so finding jeans that look nice is hard at the best of times. Still - have not made it to TS or mothecare yet so maybe that will be the answer. Planning to do Purley Way Ikea and Mothercare on scan day (motherpeculiar, they are only 5 minute walk apart), much to the horror of dh. He will have to spend a few hours wandering around B&Q while I shop hard for mat. wear and nursury furntiture.
Have a great week all
