Re frozen meals: it's safer to cook from thawed unless you have a thermometer to check that the inside is properly hot (85C). If you're cooking from thawed, you'd cook it for the same length of time as fresh IYSWIM.

Often we'll do half of a meal e.g. the meat bit of cottage pie and freeze that, then defrost/cook that separately until piping hot, and then add the rest.

Probe thermometers are cheap, though, and DH does a lot of cooking from frozen.

ChocolateHobnob · 26/10/2007 20:09

Hi all

Chatterers as ever!

RG, what did you decide on for dinner?

Choudru, the lasagne looks really nice! My freezer is getting fuller by the minute, though.

Loopy, who knows - maybe this time your lo will be early?!

Fiona good news re baby being low - bad news is (as I know) it can be really stressful on your pelvic floor!

Easy, yay! engaged in the right position. My lo is engaged in not quite the right position, which is definitely less good.

Flounder, I changed the board round cos couldn't get the new format at all! No good at change, me.

I had a nice afternoon having coffee with Alicet from the Oct thread and her 3 week old lo, who is gorgeous. Came back and had the new Chinese range from M and S and am about to sit down to watch telly and have a Wispa (probably). I can't resist.

I did however vacuum the whole house, clean some skirting boards, and make shepherds pie this morning, so my halo is glowing. Good Friday night everyone!

choudru · 26/10/2007 20:24

Glad to know my DS isn't the only one who goes a bit Jekyll and Hyde sometimes. Loopy - LOL at your DD - could so see my DS trying that on!

Thanks for the advice on defrosting thelady - I think i'll get DH to pick one of those food thermometers up - better safe than sorry.

Hope you all got something sorted for dinner. DH came up trumps (no, not with littleoldme's farting soup) with salmon, green beans and potato croquettes (from the freezer). Was yum.

RG - I still would prefer to have to defrost a meal rather than cooking one from scratch any day. When is DP back then?

I'm bored as well and feeling a bit pants - did you find anything interesting in ASDA RG?

Someone go into labour to liven things up please.

Even Stenders is boring me.

AnnainNZ · 26/10/2007 20:39

Silk - glad the monitoring went well, sounds like I had all the same tests and checks as you. I saw uterine contractions on the heart monitoring thing too, the midwife seemed quite pleased that there were quite a few of them (though I couldn't even feel them so they must have been tiny ones!). Now take it easy and don't do too much, feet up, blood pressure down! LOL at your panda-crying too, I feel quite sorry for the useless panda who got the toy panda to practise with...

Berry, hope your move went well, when you get back online to read this.

We are definitely on Operation Try-to-get-the-baby-out-before-induction-date now. I have read some OK stories about induction too so I know it may not be that bad, but would like to try everything to get it going naturally. Yesterday had a vindaloo, bounced on the exercise ball, bounced on the husband iykwim and tried pressing some acupressure points on hands and legs that are meant to help stimulate labour (didn't do all these things at the same time, I'm not a contortionist!). Result? Mild period-y pains. Even if I don't go into labour I reckon it can't harm to try a few things and it may make conditions a bit more favourable for induction.

Right, off to eat the vindaloo leftovers for breakfast...yum...is a really tasty one too. Lovely spring morning here. Hope you all enjoy your extra hour tomorrow

fiona76 · 26/10/2007 20:47

What if I'm like the useless panda who can't look after her baby?????

RGPargy · 26/10/2007 21:32

Fiona - you may be right re getting dinner out in the morning and waiting for it to defrost. Would be quicker i guess....

What i would like to know is this:

Do i make the whole lot and cook it as a bit whopping dish then cut it up and put (messily) into the metal trays OR do i just cook the mince, then using my little metal trays, make up little portion sized lasagnes, put the lids on then bung in the freezer? I'm so hopeless

Great news re bump dropping!

Easy - Yay!!!!! Fantastic news re Marnied! What a good little girl!

Loopy - lol @ your DD. LOs love audiences dont they! Hope your wait isn't toooo long Loopy. Would hate to think of you sitting here all on your own once we've all had our babies!

thelady - thanx for the defrosting tip, but does the food not go soggy if you defrost it first? Lots of stuff always says "always cook from frozen" on the packet and i always wonder why!

Choc - I've got a really horrible boring dinner - croquets and duck pancakes. Not what i wanted really but there was nothing else to put in the oven from the freezer. Blimey, i can see your gleaming halo from here!

Choudru - OK ok, i'm sold on making a batch of stuff, rather than doing it from scratch. Not sure what time DP is back. They have gone to this huge building in Bromley and have had to wait til the electricity board have given them the all clear to turn the entire supply of electricity off to the whole building before they can continue to work on the massive generator. They have to do it all before Sunday when the power gets turned on again so they are working as late as is humanly possible. I dont envy him at all!

Didn't find anything too interesting in Asda really. Had to buy another small lasagne ceramic roaster for DP as his one snapped when i was washing it up. Oh and i found some Munchies ice cream bars. The highlight of my evening! I really think i need to get a life lol.

I was going to sort out a mix to record tonight but although the spirit is willing, the flesh is definitely weak! Might try tomorrow instead......

Anna - sounds ominous if you had period type pains! That's what i remember early labour feeling like so you keep it up girlie!! HOpe you enjoyed your vindaloo breakfast! Sounds erm.... interesting!

Fiona - now you really ARE sounding like an hormonal pg woman!!!

OP posts:
JARM · 26/10/2007 22:18

Evening all!!!

WEll, not done too much tonight you will be glad to hear! Got the girls bathed and into bed, chilled for half an hour and sat on my bed and did the ironing sitting down! Onlt managed some of it though and got too hot so DH is going to finish it tomorrow - he is busy glossing the hallway tonight as dad has now finished the prep work needed! Just need to finish stripping and sanding the banisters and paint the walls and we are done there too!

Next weekend we start on our bedroom - ooooh to get rid of the evil purple - i cant wait!

Cot didnt get put up today - so I had a little strop but DH has promised it will be done tomorrow so the nursery will be totally finished.... YAY!!!

Had an emotion over breaking a coffee cup earlier - im a silly mare! Thought i had put it on the side far enough but obviously not and i smashed it... now on the hunt for some large cups!

am devoting the weekend to the kids this weekend, they have been slightly neglected this week because of all the decorating, so we are gonna be doing loads of walking and chilling and playing.

Re meals - Im lucky in that I dont have to do any of that - DH is a chef by trade so he cooks from scratch every night... i cant actually remember the last time i cooked and we have been married for nearly 4 years! Plus our freezer isnt big enough anyway as we buy our meats in bulk every 2 months so its chock full of raw meat!!!

bump is sore still - not sure whats going on, but my "bits" feel very tender, so roll on my next ante-natal on tuesday and i can find out whats progressing!

Planning massive fireworks party next saturday night though, so hoping that will set me off into labour.... well a girl can dream! I know in reality i will probably still be here in december!

have a good night all and i will no doubt post again in the morning before i even get out of bed - the wonders of laptops and wi-fi!!!

RGPargy · 26/10/2007 22:35

Jarm - sounds like your house has been a buzz of activity today!

re "bits" hurting - i've had that for a week or so now too. Like a throbbing sensation down below - it's really painful! I mainly get it in bed tho. Very odd.

Might plug my external hard drive in and watch something i've downloaded. Think i'll watch Hustle.

See you tomorrow people!

OP posts:
thelady · 26/10/2007 22:49

RGPargy: I don't know about soggy - suspect that would be a problem if you tried to do home-made pies etc (real pastry) from defrosted in an oven that wasn't hot enough. Actually, I wonder if it isn't that the times they've given work from frozen and would result in either burnt toppings or undercooked middles if you tried to do it from thawed...?

I'd make individual separate lasagnes etc, but what we actually do is make a huuuuuuuuuuuuge batch of stuff, and then put portions into freezer bags (either one or two-person size), freeze on a tray, and then put in a big labelled bag for future use.

So far this includes: soups, cottage pie mix, curries, chilli, spag bol mix.

When we need them, we nuke the bag just long enough to get the stuff out, pop in a bowl and thaw/reheat completely before finishing up whatever dish it is.

Twas curry tonight. Rogan Josh for me, and Palak Gosht for him. Yumyum!

RGPargy · 26/10/2007 22:58

thelady - thanx for all that info, that's really informative.

OP posts:
silkcushion · 26/10/2007 23:00

Fiona - I wondered if I might be like the useless panda too .
Lady - you are clearly a much better housewife than me. I didn't have a clue about the whole reheating thing. Just hadn't occurred to me. Thanks for the advice.

Rg - you're starting to sound as though yr a little bored. Beware it is dangerous - you'll end up like me mooching about the house waiting for the baby to arrive (when in reality it could be another 4 weeks nearly if I'm overdue).

Off to bed now possibly. night night

RGPargy · 26/10/2007 23:01

Silk - yes, i am a little bored today, but i think it's because DP was around all day, which puts me out of sorts with any routine i might have built up. I just cant get on with anything when he's here, like housework etc. Dont know why, i just cant.

OP posts:
silkcushion · 26/10/2007 23:11

I've started to go stir crazy I think. Have done all the sensible things on my to do list. Was v productive in week 1 of mat leave. V tired in week 2 and slept loads. Week 3 has just finished and I feel a bit restless - like I don't know what to do with myself. Don't think I had enough planned tbh. Have set things up to do everyday next week - just to get out of the house.

thelady · 26/10/2007 23:11

silkcushion - I do a good impression of a housewife. DH is chef, though, so all this is his knowledge . The only thing I do better is ironing, and that's very much a last resort.

TheHeadlessDuchess · 26/10/2007 23:17

silkcushion...I'm on leave until Thursday if you fancy a visit? Can't have you going stir crazy. Obviously I'd come to your neck of the woods. Let me know if you fancy it. It is B's first birthday tomorrow and I have failed miserably to bake a decent cake. Am on third attempt...

silkcushion · 26/10/2007 23:22

Have a good 1st birthday tomorrow. Can't you cheat and buy a cake (or is that what bad mummies do?)

Meeting up would be great if you're free next week. Monday or Wednesday would be best. Are you sure it's ok to come to me?

TheHeadlessDuchess · 26/10/2007 23:29

I may well have to cheat and buy a cake. But since I have burnt my arm and broken my mixer, I might as well plough on.

Monday is better for me. It is no problem at all coming to you. B will get a nice sleep on the way down and you will get to see just how childfriendly your house is! I'll have to be back here for a dentist appointment at 3.30 or so. Can you mail me your postcode?

iris66 · 27/10/2007 06:41

morning all Are we going to get another baby today d'you think? There seems to be some serious twitchiness going on which sounds promising. The other thread is very quiet so far (though I'm quite content to burble away to myself in a Zen like blissed out way )
Elliot only woke twice for a feed and is a real sleep addict (so far ....[fingers crossed emoticon] - it's great.
Sending strong (but pain free) contraction vibes to everyone who'se ready Have a good day all.

JARM · 27/10/2007 07:00

me me me me me Iris - IM READY!!! Ok, well I should really wait until 37 weeks, but now will be good!

I cant sleep, cant get comfortable.... and am dreaming of a baby who only wakes once!!! WELL DONE ELLIOT!

I am lying in bed on the laptop, so may turn it off again in a min and try and sleep some more - DH has just got up with the girls bless him, they were early today.

Take care and chat later - and again - CONGRATS IRIS - you sound so so so so loved up and happy!

ChocolateHobnob · 27/10/2007 09:01

Iris you're making me even more broody! He sounds gorgeous - model baby - and you do indeed sound so blissed out!

Silk, I think you're right about planning things. I had my first week off this week just gone and had activities planned every other day or so. In the interim I was cooking madly. I'm 39+3 now and wondering how long it'll be for me - no sign of any action and I still have oodles of energy and feel fine, so suspect it might be a while. I've set up things for next week, lunches and coffees, so I won't go stir crazy...

Anna, good luck with your self-induced induction techniques! Let us know if they work (though I don't like vindaloo...).

RG, bored?? You miss work don't you!!! Hmm. Shame you don't live near me or we could have a Wispa eating session.

Today planning to shop probably (my favourite activity apart from cooking) and have some cake somewhere. Mmm.

Hope you all have a good day!

Silk - Loved your panda story. I'm with you on the emotional front. I cried when that blonde one got evicted from the x- Factor last week. And alan Johnston talking about his kidnapping , well that had me in floods.

Choc - Hope you aren't getting too restless.

If anyone else is feeling bored they can always come and help decorate our hall...

Have a happy Saturday.

JARM · 27/10/2007 11:06

Im in the middle of decorating my own hall!!

Feeling so so so so so sick again today - its almost MS back with a vegence! Im so fed up of feeling rough though, i just want to feel "normal" again!

DH has just taken the girls to the beach for a run around, give me some peace - just cant decide whether to go back to bed - again - or actually DO something!

littleoldme · 27/10/2007 11:17

JARM - GO TO BED

JARM · 27/10/2007 11:21

{sobs} but ive been in bed nearly all morning!! I feel so bloody useless at the moment.... I want the energy and drive and determination back.... maybe it will tonight.

Im sat on the sofa, with the laptop, in trackies surrounded by the kids toys that havent been tidied up, the washing machine is on its final spin and there is still ironing to be done.

I go to bed, and it will get left until tonight.

All I really want is for DH to put the cot up so I can lock myself in the nursery and babymoon!
