cl - good luck with the scan, i think the cervix checking is a great idea. my friends sister lost her twins at 16 weeks with an incompitant cervix and if it had been checked at one of her scans they might have been able to prevent it.

feedmenow - congrats on your girl, i still think theres a lot more boys then girls though.

this drinking things ridiculous, you can guarentee some idiot somewhere will take it as a green light to go out and get wasted.

skidoodle · 14/11/2007 20:08

PQ, yes my bump changes shape too. Some days it seems as though it is barely there. A couple of days ago I really had to convince myself I was really pregnant and it wasn't just a fat belly.

e14, yeah, I know what you mean exactly. but that kind of reasonableness will get us nowhere

ClaphamLauren · 14/11/2007 20:45

I'm having a girl

Scan took over an hour with lots of prodding and poking and all is well Certainly think the cervix testing is a good ida it gives you a percentage risk of having a premature baby - before 33weeks. V.interesting I thought and it also measures the efficiency of your placenta.

WOOOHOOO! I can't wait to start shopping J is very excited too

timmyinatizzy · 14/11/2007 21:52

Congrats ClaphamLauren. The girls are catching up fast.

Paranoid1stTimer · 15/11/2007 00:41

Nice to hear the girls are back in town! I am told that my mother in law went to a psychic last yr who told her we would have a boy... Found this out when a member of the family who is a total trouble maker at the best of times "let slip"... Hmmm. Anyway, it's a good way to test if MIL got her moneys worth at the pyschic ha ha!!!

Went to see the midwife for routine check up (never seen the same one twice which she didn't believe and proceeded to "check the handwriting" of each one who took my notes to see if I was telling the truth!!! She was a total COW!!!) Told her about my excruciating right hand side rib cage pain which has been reducing me to tears of late in the evenings when it reaches it's maximum intensity. MW says it is too early for me to have this (eh??? She obviously thinks I have read about this in a book and am just bleating on) and that I can't have it already. Well alrighty then - AAAARRRGGHHH!!! Another MW came in and told me to take paracetamol when the pain gets bad cos they cant really do anything else about it unfortunately - at least she didnt make me sound like a total liar.

Anyway - has anyone else found any ways of easing this pain? I am only 5ft 2 tall and have quite a small frame so maybe its something to do with all the stretching n squashing but I honestly expect to look down and have a huge black bruise over my ribs on the right - I don't even have a mark but the pain is slowly grinding me down. I feel so ungrateful cos I know I shouldnt complain and all that but it is soooooooooooooooooo painful!!! ow ow ow ow owwww owww oooowwwww!!!

THanks for reading my little whinge fest. Good luck to anyone else with this pain - I honestly send you big hugs and super strength nurofen (obvioulsy air hugs cos any rib pressure would kill and fake pretend paracetamol in place of miracle working proper pain killers!!!!)

merryberry · 15/11/2007 08:56

para - we do moves at antenatal yoga aimed at maintaining space and stretch around the ribs as we get bigger: arm raises and spine twists. it seems to ease my minor discomort in that area. are you going to a class, or can you get a dvd? justa thought, may not be an answer for you, poor thing

good news on the girls!

alco-bloody-hol. had a glass and a half of red with friend over for dinner last night. finished drinking at 2030hrs. was up FOUR times, peeing. Grr.

glammama · 15/11/2007 09:35

Hello guys, had no flipping internet at home for a few days, Sky broadband- aaaaaghhhh!!!!
Great news about scans there CL, and anyone else I might have forgotten, sorry. Awful about your pain paranoid and your midwife sounds terrible. Can't really help you much so sending you a hamper of pretend ibuprofen and a handful of invisible codeine for good measure.
I'm having the most tedious day today, on IT helpdesk for all the social workers and have to design some crib sheets on how to save web based emails onto the desktop. (Yawn) Had the strangest dream last night -my boss said I could open my monkey restaurant (whatever that is). Whatever it is, it was much better than real life, although another part of my dream was being chased by a vanload of Polish men who looked like Mickey's stepdad in Eastenders, (the total waster bloke). And then I got hired to work on a porn film but I had to have my feet in some wooden boxes. Very odd dream.
Right, off to pretend to know what I'm doing......
take care of yourselves, ladies.

derah · 15/11/2007 09:36

Morning ladies

Happy birthday to me!!! Sadly I'm at work, but since DD is going through a very serious case of the terrible 2's at the moment, it's better than being at home with her, I suppose.

I got lovely cards from DH and DD this morning, though DD declared that her card was in fact, her card, and refused to give it to me!!

Also got a new radio/CD player for my car to replace the old radio/tape that was in there. Very shiny and lovely. But DH thought he'd take it one step further and O scraped the ice off my car this morning to find.... a pink fluffy steering wheel cover, pink fluffy sun visor cover and pink fluffy seatbelt thingie! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGH!!!! He thinks he's very funny. No wonder he didn't want to walk the dogs this morning and stay and see my face when I went to my car instead! I know some of you are fans of pink, but I'm not. And certainly not fluffy pink! I've left them on to show the folks at work... we all like a good laugh here.

e14mum · 15/11/2007 09:40

Morning all! Glad the girls are catching up! I'm so dying to meet LO and find out!!

We did go see Wicked last night- it was really good! A bit Disney, but enjoyable none the less.

Anyway, towards the end I started to cry (because it was sad of course) and when the lights came up the girl beside me leaned over and said in a really loud voice "You were CRYING at the end, weren't you?" to which I replied "Yes I was, and I have a very good excuse!"

(She works in the office next to DH, and had only just met us at intermission! Some people, eh?)

ClaphamLauren · 15/11/2007 10:56

Happy Birthday derah!!

My birthday falls about a month after baby is due to be born. Wild party I'm going to be having... What are you doing to celebrate?

glammama · 15/11/2007 11:34

Happy Birthday Derah! Are you doing anything special? My birthday is in a few weeks and am supposed to be going out for a meal in Clapham after DP finishes college. ClaphamLauren Can you recommend somewhere not too pricey but still quite special? We eat all cuisines but I'm on an Italian/French/Med tip at the moment. The problem with going out on my birthday is that there tends to be lots of work Christmas parties at the same time.

monthlymayhem · 15/11/2007 13:24

Hi All

Congrats Clapham Lauren on your girly scan news! And to anyone else I might have missed.

Happy birthday Derah and sending endorphins your way Paranoid to ease your rib pain.

I had a little bit of a panicky day yesterday (caused by my overactive imagination...). When I got up yesterday morning I had just the tiniest hint of a pinky tinge when wiping (sorry if tmi but probably caused by a little excitement the night before ), had a bit of an achey tummy - probably brought on by me worrying - and hardly felt baby move at all. Anyway, my doppler helped to reassure me that all ok, and LO has been moving around this morning, so panic over...

Waiting for my moses basket to arrive that I got off of ebay and so spending most of the day jumping to the window every time I hear an engine noise..

derah · 15/11/2007 13:45

Hello

Just spent an extended lunch break in Mothercare buying stuff with vouchers I got from DD's Child Trust Fund. Ain't free money great? I bought some jeans for me, and some tops and gloves for DD. Mothercare is very expensive though, don't think I'd shop there with my own money!!

We're going out to a Greek restaurant on Saturday for my birthday. And I'm going to go crazy and have 2 glasses of wine (tipsy giggle). Last time we went there, DD ate more than anyone else! Where the tiny thing put it, I don't know, but she weighed a ton when I tried to pick her up to put her in the car. Are toddlers hollow?

Anyway, enough slacking off, must do some work.....

gingercat12 · 15/11/2007 14:40

Happy birthday Derah!

Just managed to find somebody to sign my maternity leave request form. Yes!!!! I am much more worried about coming back to work than going on mat leave at the mo.

littleducks · 15/11/2007 14:45

hiya everyone, i have been in agongy since last night my bump is so painful, i went to dr this morning and it looks like i have pulled or torn a stomach muscle. So you should all be careful lifting and bending into awkward positions as i have no idea how i did it, think it must be carrying dd or the shopping.

HolidaysQueen · 15/11/2007 16:27

Littleducks - poor poor you. It sounds very painful - make sure you get lots of TLC and rest. I will now you as an example of why DH has to do all the lifting and carrying in our house from now on

Happy birthday, Derah and congrats on the girl, Lauren!

Okay, I have another of my daft first-timer questions for you all (I'll slink off back to my hiding place afterwards while you all giggle at me ). I really like the idea of using a birthing ball as I'm pretty convinced that I will need/want an active labour and I find sitting and moving on them quite relaxing anyway. Anyway, we have a gym ball at home - can I use that, or is there something special about birthing balls which means I need to buy one of those instead?

doup76 · 15/11/2007 17:07

Really feel for you littleducks!!!!!

OK- a couple of points on the cervix issue.
If you have ever had any surgery/biopsies of your cervix, even if it was years ago, please please ask your doctor to check you out with an internal scan.
Having a cervical cerclage ("the stitch") should be phasing out now as research shows that it is not very effective and also has its risks.
If you have had cervical issues, a previous miscarriage or any other risk of going into preterm labour, ask your doctor about whether you should try taking progestorone pessaries. It is now supposed to be the most effective method of preventing pre-term labour.

Sorry to get all serious everyone, but the idea of anyone having to go through a miscarrage or premature birth for certain doctors to put two and two together sends shivers down my spine!

I don't want to scare anyone though! If you have never had any issues with your cervix, this needn't worry you!

littleducks · 15/11/2007 17:49

i used an ordinary gym ball in my last pregnancy no probs, keep meaning to get it out again, didnt use it much in labour though

Sara85 · 15/11/2007 17:58

Holidaysqueen im so glad u asked that-i've been wondering for ages!nice to know im not the only 1st timer!! lol.
Littleducks, sorry to hear you're in pain.is tehre anythign they could suggest or just lots of rest? i assume there's not a lot that can be done for a torn muscle in your stomach..
i'll be careful from now on i think-i've got cramps in my tummy muscles turning over in bed since my bump appeared!

derah · 15/11/2007 19:39

Littleducks - ouch!! Rest that bump and I hope you feel better soon.

HQ - I used my normal gym ball last time. It was great to bounce/rest on, and rock on to get baby in position for the birth so I used it quite a bit in the final stages of pregnancy. I use it now to bounce for a bit when I get restless legs in the evening.

It was also a godsend in labour. I was in mild labour for about 18 hours before I went into hospital, and spent most of that time bouncing. I'm really short, so I have a 55cm ball. In the hospital they only had 65cm balls which were just too big for me. I was gutted that I had to stop bouncing when I got there cos it was so comfortable.

HolidaysQueen · 16/11/2007 08:22

Morning everyone. I'm so excited as it is finally less than a week to my scan now!!! I had my first appt at 11 weeks and haven't seen anyone - doctor or midwife - since then and I'm now almost 22 weeks! It has been very reassuring to have the baby moving and kicking inside me, but we're both really really keen to see him or her again now and be checked over by the midwife. I'm also desperate to start buying clothes. I've had to content myself with bidding for a few unisex things on eBay for now. I don't really do baby blue or baby pink, but everything in the shops is so gendered, it drives me insane - even more neutral green/orange/brown clothes have either flowers or trucks embroidered on them. Grrr...

doup76 · 16/11/2007 09:52

Hey HolidaysQueen!
I know how you feel. I am having a boy but it is still seems that everything is pale blue and a bit drab.

Anyway, yesterday I made my first purchase for the baby.....who would have thought buying a packet of bodysuits could fill you with such happiness! I felt very warm and fuzzy......this could get dangerous!

preggersagain · 16/11/2007 10:23

morning all!! hope everyone is well.

Lol at some of you only just getting to grip with baby shopping- i've only known for two weeks what the twins are but already our house has been turned into something resembling barbie's malibu house Dh has tried telling me to stop but i can't help it

I am today on the hunt for a single pram- i'm sure there are going to be times when i only take one of them with me- or if i carry one in a sling and then have the other in a pram.

having said that they are in the doghouse atm- they will NOT let me have my wicked way with dh, very un-sexy to be booted hard as soon as dh lays a finger on me, totally puts you off- believe me problem is all these hormones are sending me loopy and i keep leaping on dh

Right- pram hunt

PurlyQueen · 16/11/2007 16:29

I still can't bring myself to buy any baby things, let alone look at them in the shops. I know it's just superstition but I feel it's tempting fate .

Today I'm feeling really knackered. I just want to curl up on the sofa with a slushy DVD and the cats purring, but I'll be at work instead

glammama · 16/11/2007 17:10

Evening all! Purlyqueen I was the same as you when I was pregnant with DD. It was exactly as you said, felt like tempting fate. With this pregnancy DP is the same but it's his first baby so I understand. I've hardly got anything in, it's mostly a matter of finance and space. I'm not having anything which is not essential and what I do buy will be after Christmas. Having shelled out £130 yesterday for DD's pink DS Lite for Christmas I'm not feeling inclined to spend much on this little wriggler right now.
Preggers feel for you and your thwarted rumpy pumpy. I'm not allowed to do certain things and we are both getting very aaaaagh about it. It's so long to wait.......flipping placenta over cervix!

PS Anyone know why Ugly Betty is not on tonight, it's the highlight of my viewing week
