SGK- you look really well! and Callum looks healthy he's much bigger than I expected for a Prem baby. I'm glad he's doing well.

Finally got a call back from the Hospital MW(after calling 3 times and leaving lots of messages)regarding antenatal classes and finally got them sorted, so panic over phew!. I've got a day course from 10-4, as in my hospital they only do one course a month.

I've been thinking about birth plans and feel that i would really like a homebirth as you get higher level of care. But was wondering what methods of pain relief are available for a home birth? Idealy i'd like gas and air.

KaylaBmummy · 27/09/2007 21:42

Hi All Just to say hello and slowly catching up on all the chat. Had consultants appointment today, he strongly advised the c-section at 37 weeks, so after a long discussion agreed that it would be the safest bet for me and LO, so all going well LO will be with me in 3 weeks (cant wait ). Bit scared about c-section but sure it will be fine. Just waiting for a date to come in post now.

SGK - Very best wishes to you and glad to hear Callum and you are doing so well .

Going to try and read through all the thread since Tuesday night to catch up as I have had problems getting on PC, so hopefully speak later. Take care all

nykate · 27/09/2007 22:34

Congrats to you SGK!! You and Callum look wonderful in the pics

Welcome to all of the new Nov mums!

RG- perhaps it was one of the food colors used in the squash that made you react? There have been studies that link some food coloring with ADHD and such.

I've spent a LONG time trying to catch up and am getting a bit freaked out by everyone's fantastic organization skills. I have NOTHING done for baby, no plan for my 2DDs when I go into labor as I don't know anyone well in the area, and barely have the energy to get through the basics of the day. Basically, I'm completely unprepared!

I have a few questions:
Bags- For my 2DD (born in US), I only had to bring going home outfit as hospital provided nappies, tshirts, hats, etc. Do I need to bring these things or is it just personal preference to have your own stuff? Ditto with something to wear during birth. I just had a hospital gown. Is it personal preference to bring your own thing or is it expected? Also, hospital provided disposable knickers, pads, pain relief spray, etc. It sounds like I need to bring these types of things with me?

Birth- I had a fairly quick labor with DD2 (DD1 was planned Csection, so didn't labor) and an epidural and it was FABULOUS. It seems to be an unpopular way to go here. In your experiences, is it generally discouraged unless there are special circumstances?

Hospital stay- I'd like to go home fairly soon after the birth. What is the usual hospital stay?

I know I should be discussing these things with MW, but my visits are SO quick and I always have the girls with me that I seem to never get around to the little things. And now I don't see her for 5 weeks (I'm due in 6 weeks) because I have a visit at the hospital in the interim.

Sorry for the long post. I've been a bit too emotional lately...and a bit of a nutter!

sparklygothkat · 27/09/2007 22:38

Callum

lisad123 · 27/09/2007 23:28

silk, i had simular problems. My heart beat causes the main problem but LO heart was often really too quickly and normally when this was happening my bp was raised too.
I had regular montiorings, and it did settle down sometimes, but sometimes took about 4 hours to settle.
My lo was born last week, and they confirmed my placenta had started to fail again, so all the high heart rates were likely to be caused by that.
This has happened in both my pregnancy, and other than my DD being low birth weights, they are prefect. Please try not to worry. Its not uncommon for LO heart rates to be high, especially if they have been playing leapfrog just before hand. They will monitor u, but could just be a one off. Let me know how it goes. Good luck

L

AnnainNZ · 27/09/2007 23:40

SGK that montage is fab

(and you look so YOUNG )

Silkcushion - I think a lot of people get higher bp in third trimester - I'm on bedrest for it at mo. Lots of rest with feet higher than heart, so propped up on cushions/pillows. I know how you feel and it is scary but I'm reassuring myself that I'm gettign really good care, lots of monitoring, which is good for me and the baby, lots of tests/checks better than not enough.

NYKate - the hospital gave me a list of what they provide and what they suggest I bring e.g. they provide nappies, I bring baby clothes. They provide hospital gowns but they said yiou can bring your own, I have bought 2 cheap black front opening maternity nighties (haven't worn a nightie since I was about 7 ) that don't really matter so I can chuck them after if they get too messy (eek). Maybe your hosp or dr/mw can provide you with similar list?

The scan and growth report from Wed (34 wk growth scan) just arrived in the post. So the concern was that the baby might not be growing properly because of my bp - hah! Her estimated weight is already 6lb 3oz - average for this gestation is 4lb 9oz! Think I'm having a big baby...

empen · 28/09/2007 06:53

NYKATE - I am not leaving anything to chance and not relying on the hospital to supply anything. Had c section last time and the only thing supplied was the dressings and drugs!!! I am in for a planned c section this time at a different hospital from last time but am just going to expect the same. I was allowed to buy the blanket they wrapped my dd in!!

sarahloumadam · 28/09/2007 08:26

SGK - what a gorgeous family! And Callum looked bigger than I expected but then I saw how big his little hat was for him! Glad he is doing so well

I see some of you watched Bringing up the Baby on TV the other night. Thought that 1950s guru was bonkers! No kissing and cuddling! No eye contact! Felt sorry for one of the new dads, I really hope he doesn't regret doing the experiment, they aren't tiny for very long. (Pause while I get off my soap-box...)

NYKate - this is my first baby but I think you are expected to provide most things now although they have supplies of nappies, sanitary pads etc if you run out. It used to be different or so my mum tells me.

Working from home today and it's bliss not to have to get in the car. The LO does not like being in the car anymore and boots me in the ribs all the way there and all the way back, trying to get comfy.

Anyone else heard a clicking noise coming from their tummy?! I saw a thread about this ages ago and its started to happen to me. Only hear it when its very quiet and I'm very still and its sounds like one of your toes clicking but from inside! I got up and looked around the back of the sofa the first time it happened! Weird.

Hope you all have a good day - nearly the weekend

sarahloumadam · 28/09/2007 08:27

Silk - hope all goes well today, will be thinking of you.

JARM · 28/09/2007 09:08

SGK - im in tears!

He is so perfect! You all look so happy, and Callum is obviously doing very well indeed.

Did you really have to add the rainbow - its what set me off!!!

Hope you are all doing well, look after yourself and all my love to you all x

SGK You all look amazing and so happy. I'm so thrilled for you all. Your montage is fab.

Silk - I hope everything goes well at the hosp. Lots of love.

Floanna · 28/09/2007 10:54

SGK - your new pics are also gorgeous - you lucky mummy you!

BBliss - If you decide to have HB, even home water birth you can still have gas and air. In fact you can have whatever pain relief you like except for epidural which you have to have in the hospital - but if you decide you can't take it at home then you can just ask to be transferred in and hopefully still get an epi if you want one. Birthing pools are a pain reliever in themselves though!

I'm set on having a HB (so long as no complications) as I just want to be as comfortable as possible and I've heard such positive stories.

Good luck in your decision!

iris66 · 28/09/2007 10:55

Sparkly did you really have to add the link on top of the gorgeous pictures?!! it made me sob my heart out - and on top of a stinking cold that's a very unattractive look

geekInPigtails · 28/09/2007 11:17

chocolatehobnob - from what i heard the other day, the safety of delivering in water HAS been investigated (partly at my hospital!) and so long as you are officially 'low-risk', delivering in water is just as safe as out of it. 'Low-risk' counts as 37-42 weeks, no problems with mother or baby's BP or heartrate, no GD or other medical condition during pregnancy. And as Loopy says, the baby is in warm water in the womb, so as long as the water in the pool isn't cold and the baby DOESN'T come to the surface, there is no hurry to get them out at all. Their instinct to take the first breath only kicks in with the stimulation of the colder air on their face, until then the placenta carries on doing what it has been for 9 months. So you just have to make sure you keep your bum well down between the head crowning and the rest of the body coming out!

berrybliss - glad you've heard about your antenatal class!

silkcushion - hope the monitoring today goes OK, I know it's hard but try not to panic too much.

nykate - I get the impression from stuff I've read that midwives here tend to be more in favour of 'natural' childbirth than is the average in the US - that is if you ask their opinion. But they are there to support your choices, so if you want an epi, be clear that that's what you want and you should get it! The main downside that I know of is that some hospitals can't provide a "mobile/walking" epidural, so you may well be stuck on the bed, which can make labour slower than if you can wander around or find a better position. But if your last labour was fairly quick that may not be a problem for you. As to hospital stay, I get the impression it's up to you - you can be discharged 6 hours after the birth if you want and there have been no real problems. Or you can stay 2-3 days. I think it's unusual to stay longer than that unless you've had C-section, but a midwife comes to visit you at home several times in the week or two afterwards to check up on you and LO.

I had a mw check-up yesterday, and apparently had a tiny bit of protein in my wee again (they found this 3 weeks ago). But last time when they sent a sample to a proper lab the results were fine, and my BP is OK, so she said she's not going to worry about it and just hope it's gone by the next check-up! not sure what to think.

Pixiefish · 28/09/2007 11:39

love the montage SGK.

I'm not going to bore you with boring details but I saw an over-zealous obs reg yesterday who has me all wound up and all a tither.

RGPargy · 28/09/2007 11:47

Hi everyone

SGK - what a lovely Montage! It brought tears to my eyes!

How is everyone today? I'm soooooo glad it's Friday. I feel so tired and emotional today. I could quite easliy go on mat leave early at this rate. It's not the actual job that's wearing me out, it's the getting up early and then the 15 minute walk from the station to the office (each way) that kills. My poor pelvis gets so sore! It's so frustrating tho because i sit here at work and do virtually nothing all day - quite literally. Yesterday all i did was fill out one form for one of my bosses. That was it. ALL DAY. DP said about starting my mat leave early but i'd feel guilty about us having my proper pay stopped a week or two earlier than if i were to just hang it out. He suggested getting a taxi each way too but i'm not sure that that'll be financially viable really as it could cost about a tenner a day! I just dont know what to do really. There's so much i could be doing at home but instead i have to sit here and get bored and surf the net all day.

Sorry for the winge - had to get it out of my system tho.

Silk - good luck for today. I'm sure everything will be fine so try not to worry.

Hope everyone else is fine and dandy. I haven't got the energy to reply to everyone atm but i'm up to it later, i'll give it a bash.

Not long now ladies

Pixiefish · 28/09/2007 12:05

hugs RG. What became of you working from home?

RGPargy · 28/09/2007 12:10

It's never been an option Pixie!

Floanna · 28/09/2007 12:45

SLMadam - Just seen you post about 'clicking noise'. I get clicking type feeling around my pelvis area every once in a while - it's a repeatative feeling. Think it's because the baby has hiccups - that was my guess anyway!!

Sparkly - what a lovely montage. Next time you should maybe put an emotional warning before we all look and blub our hearts out!! I still can't believe that my LO could be out looking like little Callum!!!! Well Done x

Pixie - how are you?

Silk - I'm at the spa town Hosp.

Now we have one out - who is getting itchy feet to get on with this now?????!!! And who will be next........???

fiona76 · 28/09/2007 15:24

Just watched Bringing up baby on catch up. Scary methods I felt sorry for the 50s method dad he looked like it was totally against what he wanted to do.
I have really bad pelvic pain for the last 3 days now. I went to the osteopath and he told me to go on bed rest again. Its so frustrating but I am in a lot of pain so hopefully the rest and treatment with help cause I can't cope with 7 more weeks like this.My mum and sister also had it so I guess it runs in families.
I talked to my friend who had the twins last week at 31 weeks the boy was 1.5kg and the girl was 1.18kg. They are doing well but could be in SCBU for a while yet.

lisad123 · 28/09/2007 16:18

afternoon all.

I have added pics ofjasmine to my profile now. She is a very chilled baby, im very lucky.
My spd has hit hard today, its been so much better since the birth but getting up from breast feeding last night all i heard was a huge crack so today is very painful. Cant get to see physio till 12th, so have to hope it gets better.

I got to hold callum yesterday he is very sweet, would have been broody if didnt have one already made 4 days before. Cant wait for him to be out so me and sis can enjoy our babies together.

I watched that bringing up baby last night on replay and OMG, I wanted to jump into tv and punch the 1950s woman. Why are those mums pputting themselve though it? Im all for routines but putting a baby outside for hours is madness and just cruel.
