Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
aikigypsy · 12/10/2007 02:35

Good evening all! I have just been catching up. It's been a busy week around here, getting DP settled in, as well as some very disorganised preparation for the baby. I've had lots of people say very discouraging things lately about breastfeeding and cloth diapers/nappies, and it's getting on my nerves.

re: constipation -- I have found bran muffins very effective... a bit too effective. My favorite remedy is sitting with my feet up so I'm closer to squatting while on the toilet.

Yesterday the midwife said that LO's head was "very low" so maybe I won't go late after all. All seems very, very soon.

iris66 · 12/10/2007 06:52

Kayla - hope you're feeling a bit better this morning. Not long now until your DH gets home I do know how you must be feeling and sympathise totally - it's bloody hard. Everything always kicks off when they're away (particularly if there's no chance of them getting back!!)and, even when all you want to do is curl up in a ball and cry, you have to try to keep it together. It feels so much worse when you're choc full of hormones too! I'm sure I do more than my fair share of ranting as a result - MN's a safe and supportive environment (and definately what keeps me sane) so rant away - it's good for you - and a good cry is good for you too!

Also, I know I've said some negative things about my induction experience last time so wanted to clarify for you in case what I've said has had some negative impact on you. My bad memories of last labour are entirely to do with the insensitivity of the MW I had. The induction went well, I only needed G&A and was only 4hrs in established labour. No intervention, no stitches and big smiles all round. That said, I totally understand your concerns about having one procedure only to end up with another. It is your choice. You can refuse the induction. Has the option of going straight to CS been discussed with you at all? They will take into account the fact that it's making you anxious so do contact them again - today! I had a bit of a drizzle on wed over blood sugar( ie my lack of control and the stress it was causing me) and the matter was dropped instantly. At this stage in your pg they want to keep you as stress free as possible.

As far as your body being ready goes.. lots of sex helps as there are prostaglandins in sperm which ripen the cervix (added bonus of you both feeling utterly loved up as a couple before the arrival of LO ) . The induction procedure is to use prostin gel (chemical form of prostaglandin) to ripen it, and, once ripe, that sets off contractions. With both methods it's different amounts for different folks - though being very active helps to get things going too. However, you may not go into labour though having sex and you may not go on prostin gel alone (my HCT has 3 goes, 4 hours apart, before sticking a synto drip in). HTH and make sure you call someone today!!

Oh and Rescue Remedy (from most chemists) is fab for helping you to keep calm. As well as sipping water containing a few drops you can massage it into the centre of your palm with your thumb. It's very soothing

ChocolateHobnob · 12/10/2007 06:57

Bran muffins! I'll give them a go - thanks Aiki.

Kayla, my friend had to be induced at 37 weeks due to a bloods issue (complicated saga of antibodies - maybe similar to you Pixie?) and it was absolutely fine. Her 2nd baby. She didnt need an epidural, even. And she is not an Amazonian type who would spurn all pain relief. So I would try not to be too negative. Having said that, I know that induction can fail. Why don't you negotiate agreeing to induction if it seems that your cervix is more ripe or if you're already a bit dilated (some women are, arent they, with later children?) or in any case talk to the consultant again. And try some natural induction like Iris

Thanks thelady. Since it seems some creams are useable I will make an appt with the doctor. No point in suffering if there's a solution - just couldn't be faffed going if the doc was just going to say live with it till lo is born anyway!

It's my scan today and I got scared irrationally in the night (usual scenario - awake nonstop) about lo. Rationally this is a position scan, so it isn't intended to check anything other than where lo is, so no need to worry. Also radio 4 this morning started on about how many women die in childbirth, which made for a good start to the day, not. I turned it off. I hate radio 4 as an alarm anyway because it's always so depressing but DH loves it...

Work this morning - doubt I'll do much since I'm shattered, but I will tidy my office and potter about. I have been known to try to sleep on a pair of chairs pushed together but a) it doesnt work and b) people can see me from an opposite window, which is a bit embarrassing.

Have a good day all, as far as you can.

ChocolateHobnob · 12/10/2007 06:59

Hi Iris,

cross-posted - thanks for a fairly positive induction story. And I think your natural induction sounds great (shame I can't summon up any enthusiasm for that sort of thing at the mo myself!).

Good luck with the sugar!

iris66 · 12/10/2007 07:25

blimey - that post took 20 minutes to load on - what on earth is the matter with my pc?!!

morning Choc (don't forget the prunes and water with that muffin )

It's horrible when you have a panic in the night isn't it. Hope work isn't too taxing today (amazing how busy you can look wafting a piece of paper around ).

littleoldme · 12/10/2007 07:54

Kayla - Not that I have experience of induction but I'm with the others on this. If you don't want an induction insist on a CS. I know it sounds trite but the most important thing is a healthy you and a healthy baby; that includes your mental health. They are bound to tak eyour circumstances and stress levels into account. Good luck with it and big hugs.

Iris - good luck with the sugar.

Choc if you are board at work you must try the link to to the silly game that I posted yesterday. your day will simply melt away.

DH has gone hiking in Scotland for the weekend never thought I'd hanker after soggy wet days on the hills

Happy Friday everyone

sarahloumadam · 12/10/2007 08:42

Good morning all!

LOM - I am rubbish at that game . Couldn't even get 1!!!

Kayla - Had to laugh at my advice (have a bath) compared to wise and practical words of some of the other lovely ladies on here. Anyway, hope you are feeling more positive today.

Think I need a bran muffin Iris . Do double choc chop muffins count?

silkcushion · 12/10/2007 09:09

Hope yr feeling a bit better today Kayla. I know it's not the same as having people with you in rl but everyone here is thinking of you and sending you hugs.

Rg - what do you imagine people look like in yr mental images of them? Might be interesting to see how accurate they are?

sarahloumadam · 12/10/2007 09:22

Oooh yes I wondered what mental images RG had!

sarahloumadam · 12/10/2007 09:26

I will post a picture. Must admit that Sparkly was as I had pictured her.

Pixiefish · 12/10/2007 09:28

Kayla- I have ITP and Hypersplenism which has realy taken a turn for the worst in this pregnancy. With dd I lost loads of blood after a fairly normal pregnancy and this time my blood is crap to start with. All the consultants (Haematology adn Obstetrician) want me to hae a planned delivery so that they can both be there if things go wrong and also blood is easier to get hold of in the day apparently. They're inducing me at 39 weeks.
I haen't read anything about it- head in sand saves upset imo although I know of a friend who took 3 days when she was induced but they kept stopping her.
What is upsetting and worrying me more than anything is how my dd will cope without me overnight as she has never had to be away from me

TeaDr1nker · 12/10/2007 09:28

Gosh, some people get up very early - YAWN

Good morning all...

iris66 · 12/10/2007 09:41

TeaDr1nker - I know is a bad thing but I don't care. You're lucky you can stay in bed so long!!!!

sparklygothkat · 12/10/2007 09:42

you are not the only one who has said that Sarah, apparently I am just as everyone pictures me to be,

iris66 · 12/10/2007 09:44

just to add - Sparkly is just how I imagined but I was surprised when you said you were a redhead RGPargy (thought you either had a wild afro or very short spikey crop!! lol) not surprised you are a Sagittarius tho - all the best people are )

iris66 · 12/10/2007 10:16

RGPargy - I've just realised how thick I am. You've obviously said you have a short spikey crop which is why I thought it {doh!} I just loked at your profile pix and you'ree how I imagined too(though there's no reason to think I haven't looked before and have just forgotten )

ooooh brain, brain, wherefore art thou brain

TeaDr1nker · 12/10/2007 10:20

i am not slovenly - honest. Actually have been up since 8 as decorators are in... Smell those paint fumes, Mmmmm.

BTW - does anyone have any tips on how to deal with water retention. Woke up this a.m with tight hands. i don't want to blow up like a balloon...

littleoldme · 12/10/2007 10:27

Sarsah - Throwing apaper in bin 101 - They key is to take note of the number on the bin. It will swerve that much in the direction of the arrow. So if it is 5.9 then you let it go as soon as it starts swinging back. If it's less than one then you wait t'ii it is almost opposite the bin. NOT that I'm a complete saddo who plays this all the time or anything. Bet if you practise youll be my top score of 5.

It's 10.30 in the morning and I'm eating pizza. It's wrong on so many levels.

iris66 · 12/10/2007 10:32

Water retention is a PITA.
I do have a couple of tips if you want (I'm a complementary therapist )
Massage the fluid back to past/over the joints (ie down fingers & whole hand over the wrist up arms) and massage the fleshy bit of your palm at the base of your thumb (down from your first finger) Find the point that's sore there (on your hand)& massage it well (it's your kidney reflex point & will promote better fluid balance BUT don't do it if you have a kidney disorder already!) Oh, and drinking plenty of water also helps as your body tries to retain it when you're not getting enough. HTH

TeaDr1nker · 12/10/2007 10:36

Off to massage base of thumb - Ta isis

izyboy · 12/10/2007 11:02

Kayla so sorry to hear about all the problems, wish we lived a little closer (I'm just outside Cardiff). Could have met for a cuppa. Could not lurk anymore 'cos I really empathise with you.

I apologise if I am being invasive, why will they not just give you an elective cs without the induction? Is this for medical reasons?

Would you prefer an el. cs to induction? If so stand firm, see your consultant with a letter stating your preference-it is your choice and your body.

Unless there has been a very good medical reason for an alternative I have always been very demanding with my consultants about what I want and they have not stood in my way (so far!).

Hope this helps.

RGPargy · 12/10/2007 11:14

Morning everyone!

It's my last Friday in the office - hopefully EVER!!!!

Kayla - Some great advice from the ladies here. Hope you're feeling better today

Silk - Dunno about mental images of faces or anything really, just a kind of persona i spose. It's difficult to describe....

Sarah - where's this pic then? Chop chop!

Iris - what are you like?!!! I am naturally a red head (strawberry blonde), but as the years have gone past my head hair has got darker and any trace of red is very difficult to find. It's just a kind of non-descript colour now, which is why i tend to get it bleached or dyed red, depending on my mood. For a contrasting hair-do, I really am thinking about getting my braids back whilst on mat leave. I'll only need to grow my hair to about 3 or 4 inches i reckon for it to be long enough for the braids to hold. I took them out initially because of going for job interviews etc but this place is quite laid back and really wouldn't care if i had them so i could have them when i returned to work too! Sorry - I am waffling now.....

I'm not a Sagitarius tho! I'm an Aquarius, thank-you-very-much! Hmmm.... i wonder if that's why i want a water birth, being a water bearer and all that.

Swelling - i've been waking up for the last couple of mornings with slightly swollen ankles. I'm not too bothered coz my mw told me it was normal at this stage. I do try and drink at least a litre of water a day tho, which isn't enough really i know, as well as maybe a pint of squash when i get home.

RGPargy · 12/10/2007 11:19

Incidentally, if anyone's interested i've just uploaded a pic of me with my braids onto my profile - let me know what you think! By the way, i should add that the pic was taken at 6am on New Years Eve/Day and i'd been partying all night so if i look a bit rough, you'll know why.

Easywriter · 12/10/2007 11:20

Grrr! I'm annoyed. I'm chair person of a committee and some people on it are being REALLY lazy about something with a deadline before christmas that is their job. It's one of the big things we do and I can see I'm going to have to pick up their slack (it's part of the chair's job to do so) but how the hell am I supposed to? I've been trying to resign since I found out I was pregnant but these things take time. I'm loathe to point out what lazy arses they're being as (as you all know) I'm a little bit too hormonal to be sure I'll be fair, but I'm really f*cked off. It's not my job, I'm having a baby in about 4 weeks and I feel like they're having some sort of laugh at my expense as basically they've got me over a barrel.

Sorry, I know this isn't about pregnancy really but I just see anytime I may have had to actually rest in just evaporating in one puff. (And I really need the rest as I'm so tired).

RGPargy · 12/10/2007 11:26

Easy - Grass the lazy f*ckers up!! Pg or not pg, why should YOU have to take up their slack! Just prepare what you are going to say first, but deffo grass them up. You are meant to be RESTING. No one's doing you any favours so why should you do them favours, only for them to be sniggering behind your back!! GGRRR people like that piss me off too!! for you!
